Westside Grows Green

On our first day back to school the students in grade 1-7 spent the morning designing recycle bins and painting the retaining wall.

Grade 8 to 12 students built a recycling depot and planted trees.

• The students participated in various ways to promote “Going Green”. For the month of January 2011 batteries were collected, a total of 8 litres of batteries have been collected so far for recycling. Cardboard and paper were collected in the recycle depot with the goal of recycling 1 ton of paper. To date a total of 904 pounds of paper has been recycled. Cardboard was also collected and then taken to be recycled. A total of 8 litres of batteries have been collected so far for recycling.

Students from the Gr. 4 & 5 class collect the compost and paper from the other elementary classrooms and bring it to the recycling depot. Once every two to three months depending on volume high school students bring the paper and cardboard to a larger recycling depot. Recyclable drink containers are collected weekly and taken to the bottle depot. Money raised is used to help children in Sri Lanka, and also Honduras.

The Gr. 4 & 5 class did their annual “Junk Art” project. Students collected and brought items from home that were no longer useful. These were glued onto a piece of cardboard and then painted.
