Labeling All of the Cabling for the computers as well as any wireless access points
will use blue Cat6 cable. All of the cabling for the printers will use green Cat6 cable. All of the backbone cabling will use red 62.5/125 Multimode Fiber Optic
cable. The keystone jacks at the end of each cable drop can be matched to the
color of the cable to easily differentiate the printer and computer drops. Blue keystone jacks will be used for the computers, and green keystone jacks will be used for the printers.
Patch cables will also follow the color scheme for easy identification in the MDF/ISDs.
Each port on each device should be numbered, and the corresponding cables should be numbered as well. Using the numbers, a database of all the information about each cable, such as what device it goes to, which VLAN the port belongs to, and any other relevant information can be stored in the database and referenced or changed as needed.

MDF and IDF LocationsMDF – Located on Floor 1 Room 1.8 This Location is near the POP and has HVAC delivery and Return vents to provide
adequate cooling. There are also plenty of power outlets.IDF A – Located on Floor 2 Room 2.31 This location is close in proximity of the MDF, has HVAC delivery and return, and
adequate power. Less backbone cabling will need to be run because of its position in relation to the MDF.
IDF B – Located on Floor 3 Room 3.10 This location close vertically to the MDF and IDF A. It has HVAC return and may need
a delivery vent added for airflow. Less backbone cabling will be needed because of its proximity to the MDF and other IDFs. It also has adequate power access. An alternate location could be Room 3.14. It already has HVAC return and delivery, but the cable drops would be longer.
IDF C – Located on Floor 4 Room 4.8 This location is also relatively close vertically to the MDF and other IDFs. It has HVAC
return and needs a delivery vent. It has adequate power as well, and Less backbone cabling would be needed as opposed to using other locations on this floor, such as Room 4.4.

Traffic Flow AssessmentBottlenecks could occur if the cable runs exceed
recommended lengths. Care has been taken to ensure that this does not happen.
Using fiber optics for backbone cabling and switch ensures that traffic should flow smoothly from the IDFs to the MDF and throughout the site.
VLANs separate all departmental traffic to limit unnecessary traffic.
MDF/IDF Fire Prevention RecommendationsSprinkler systems should be present in MDF/IDF All walls of MDF/IDF shall be lined with wall-to-
