90 Years of BBC RadioLast year on the 14th November 2012 it was 90 years since BBC had been broadcasting. To celebrate this at 17:33 every BBC radio show across the world was stopped and a song which was composed by Damon Albarn from the Blur was played across all the stations.The song was 3 minutes long which was being played and broadcasted from the London Science Museum by Simon Mayo. This was first time since 1922 that something had been simultaneously played over all BBC stations.The song was called 2LO calling. 2LO Calling began with the chimes of Big Ben and featured the first ever broadcast from the 2LO transmitter and the number one song at the time - Three O’Clock in the Morning. The three-minute piece also featured messages from listeners around the world along with the sound of the blackbird and skylark, commentary from the Cameroon election and the ubiquitous BBC pips. Albarn also chose to include a famous quote from philosopher Bertrand Russell:“Love is wise, hatred is foolish.” It featured in Morse code, the series of clicks, tones, dots and dashes historically used to transmit information.The song was called 2LO calling because the 2LO transmitter made the first broadcast - from the British Broadcasting Company as it was then known - on 14 November 1922.

More than 55 BBC radio stations came together for Radio Reunited. It is estimated the broadcast could have reached up to 80 million listeners.The Science Museum is marking the 90th anniversary of BBC Radio with a display featuring part of the original 2LO trans-mitter.Tim Boon, head of research and public history at the Science Museum, said: “The first broadcast by the 2LO 90 years ago marked the moment when radio moved from the realm of the ‘amateur enthusiast’ to the first proper public broadcasting service in Britain.

2LOBroadcast entertainment really began in the USA in 1920. There, many hundreds of stations were soon in operation, swamping the airwaves. In Britain, the approach was more cautious. Experimental stations were tried at the Marconi site at Chelmsford, Essex, in 1920 and in 1922 at Writtle, a village nearby. The Writtle transmitter had the call sign 2MT.

Another Marconi station was licensed in 1922, based at the company head office, Marconi House in the Strand, London. Its call sign was 2LO. The transmitter was located in an attic room and the aerials were strung between towers on the roof. The building is now the Marconi Wing of Citibank House, and is close to Bush

House, home of the BBC’s World Service.

The 2LO transmitter was designed by Henry Round and Charles Franklin of Marconi’s Wireless Telegraph Company, and brought into use in May 1922. It remained in its original configuration for only a very short time; within weeks it was rebuilt to take advantage of new regulations allowing increased transmitting power.

During 1922 a consortium of leading radio manufacturers set up the British Broadcasting Company. The BBC took over the 2LO call sign and transmitter and opened with a broadcast from Marconi House on 14 November, given by Arthur Burrows, 2LO’s programme director. In 1925, 2LO’s duties were assumed by a new transmitter located at Selfridges, Oxford Street, but the original was kept in reserve until 1929 in case of breakdown.

BBC Radio Through The YearsThe first gallery within the exhibition looks back over the last 90 years of BBC Radio. Here you will see the radio right from the start and be able to listen to some of the first broadcasts ever made on the radio. This gallery features video and audio, which shows films and clips of famous shows and broadcasts. We like to highlight the key events which have shaped the radio to what it is today.

2LO CallingThis is a special gallery which has been developed just for this exhibition. On the 90th anniversary of BBC Radio, a song composed by Damon Albarn was played over all BBC stations at the same time to mark this celebration. Here in this gallery we have visualised the song for your own viewing.The song is made up of key events throughout the years and includes many recordings from broadcasts, we have been able to break this down and create a visual gallery to illustrate the com-posed song. Sit back and listen to 2LO Calling, whilst watching the visualisation.

Present Day RadioThe last gallery looks at the radio of today. As this is such a big part of todays culture and society, we have interpreted the stations by looking at the tone of voice and style of the shows, which has then led to creating a visual exhibit for each one. This shows how the radio can influence and be apart of so many different lives across the world. Split into two sections, the larger area of the gallery displays installations and artwork. The smaller gallery to the side holds further artwork but is where we hold our daily workshops, here you can learn about radio broadcasting and even have a go yourself!

Here at the National Media Museum we are lucky to have our very own radio station that broadcasts throughout the exhibition spaces and to those who choose to tune in.

Whilst the 90 years of BBC Radio exhibition is running throughout the museum we are giving the public the change to come and leanr about radio broadcasting

In the Modern Day Radio exhibition on the 3rd floor we have set up a workshop area, this will run in sessions throughout the days and give anyone a chance to come along and learn about the radio as well as getting the chance to have a go themselves and broadcast over our station.

Along with the workshop sessions we will be inviting radio presenters from across the country to come down and present on our station on various days. They will also be taking part within the workshops and helping out showing you the ropes.

The first presenter will be here on the opening night and then take part in the workshop session on the first day we open to the public. This will be Nick Grimshaw from Radio 1 Breakfast Show.

To take part in the workshop sessions, please visit the reception on the ground floor upon arrival of the museum. Here you will be able to sign up to available sessions throughout the day. Each session will be 2 hours long and a maximum of 6 people to a session. So if you are interested we would advise you to get down there early to make sure you secure a place.

Once you are in the museum and have collected your ticket from the reception, you then have access to all three exhibitions and workshops.

As the exhibitions are all about the radio and the relationship of the tone of voice and how the presenter expresses things, we have included audio and visual sections throughout the exhibitions. These are recordings, videos, speeches from the past 90 years of shows and events that have been broadcasted over the BBC Radio.

To make this accessable to everyone who enters the exhibition, we have created a app for all smart phones. Across the exhibition there will be symbols next to each exhibit, when the app is open you simply scan the symbol and it will take you to the video, recording or speech which relates to the exhibit.

Not only does the app allow individual access to each audio or visual item, but you can also use it as navigation around the museum. The app is loaded with an indoor mapping of the museum, this works similar to google maps and allows to you see inside the musuem and the exhibitions whilst walking around. You can also click on the exhibits to see the artwork and expand upon the information shown by clicking on the information points around the exhibitions.

The ‘90 Years of BBC Radio’ exhibition will be exciting and innovating; as this is a celebra-tion of technology that has made the radio what it is today. Along with this each individual person can create their own experience by using the tailored app to view the exhibition at their own pleasure.

The exhibition is held at the National Media Musem and will be running from 1st - 31st Juky 2013. Opening daily from 10am till 6pm. The map across shows the exhibition spaces for this exhibition but there are further exhibitions running within the National Media Museum. Its great day out for the family and something which you can teach the little ones!

The Museum offers a wide range of facilities to keep the whole family entertained for the full day.

CafeThe cafe is open every day within the museum opening times. Relax in the bar area over a glass of wine or beer, choose from a selection of sweet and savoury snacks to accompany your film, or indulge in one of our homemade cakes with a freshly brewed coffee.

Picnic RoomIf you would prefer to bring your own lunch, the White Room picnic area is located on the ground floor next to the Games Lounge.

Gift ShopThe giftshop is open all day everyday, this offers a wide variety of gifts for all ages. Covering items related to the exhibitions within the musuem and other novelty items too. There is an extensive book collection all about the Media which may be of interest to some of the visitors.

ReceptionThe reception is open all day and is where you will go to collect your tickets, find out information about the exhibitions and book onto the workshops. The reception staff are always on hand for anyone that needs help.

AccessibilityThroughout the exhibition there is access for all disbled users. Ramps and lift are present throughout the exhibition space, along with disabled toilets. If you have any special requirements please contact us and let us know in advanced and we will accomodate these requirements for you.
