W ith a year into my tenure here at the Vistancia community I have had the pleasure of meeting and

getting to know many of you and many more of your great children For this reason much of this issue will be dedicated to the youth of VistanciaTeens tweens and young adults love utilizing the Mountain Vista Club as a gathering spot and we love having them here Although one thing we have noticed is that when they travel in packs if they donrsquot have stuff to do trouble can sneak up and find them

To that end we have committed this summer to keeping them busy Some of you may have heard that we are REVITALIZING our teen council Currently known as the Teen Scene this group of young people will meet regularly (food is usually involved) to discuss events for young people how to engage the youth in Vistancia how to self police and take pride in their community fund raise get to know each other better and make new friends We had at least 20 kids at our first meeting in June We ate pizza and brainstormed some great ideas for the summer The enthusiasm was contagious and we think it was a great beginning

One of the lessons learned from this meeting was that the reason kids donrsquot attend a lot of our events was that they didnrsquot know about them We are looking to target our marketing to them in different ways by posting flyers and

ldquosave the datesrdquo in the gym and other prominent locations We are also considering the feasibility of a text blast with reminders about meetings and events

We are excited about the all the positive potential of an active and invigorated group of young people stepping up as leaders in Vistancia If you have an expertise that will help us make this venture a success we welcome your input and participation We also welcome your kids to become a part of this group For more information feel free to contact me or Melissa Parsons and stay tunedhellipthis is going to be a fun ride

Palm Pruning Tips

As we get into the month of July Pruning should be a part of the regular maintenance program for Palm Trees There are several varieties of palms in the Valley but all should

be pruned to maintain health and appearance

The following are some practical steps to help accomplish Palm Pruning

Determine if itrsquos needed Check the palm for dead or dying fronds to be sure there isnrsquot a problem with the health Additionally the fruit can be removed to limit nutritional loss and to prevent debris below the tree

Select your Pruning Equipment Use a serrated knife to remove fronds that are less than 1rdquo in diameter a handsaw for thicker fronds and a chainsaw for very large fronds A pole saw may be needed if pruning the taller varieties of palms Care should be given to the appropriate equipment as to not damage the trunk or center fronds

Select Climbing Equipment If a pole saw isnrsquot available and the height of the tree doesnrsquot permit the use of hand tools the use of a small ladder or extension ladder could be utilized for palms 16rsquo or higher A bucket lift could also be used for tall palms Climbing spikes should never be used in the process of pruning a palm due to the potential of damaging the trunk If a palm is extremely tall and mature consider using the services of a professional tree service

Protective Gear Whether the work is being accomplished by a home owner or a professional the proper protective equipment is always necessary for safety of not only the worker but also the tree and surrounding property Goggles gloves and a hard hat should always be worn Always sterilize the cutting equipment to prevent the spread of any diseases

Pruning the Palm Tree Always start by removing dead or damaged fronds from the trunk When cutting the fronds take care to leave a minimum of 2rdquo from the trunk to prevent any damage to the tree Next remove any green frond that are hanging below a line that is 90 degrees from the trunk or parallel to the ground Removal of green fronds above this line could weaken

and stress the tree It is important to note that removal of the top or crown of the palm will result in death of the tree The center portion or the crown will not grow back

Care To Know The best practices are to prune the least amount necessary and prune for legitimate reasons How much to prune depends on the size species age as well as your intentions Two good principles to remember--a tree or shrub can recover from several small pruning wounds faster than from a single large wound and avoid removing more than 25 of the canopy in a year

V inny Infante is part of Community Patrol on the CCMC team

here at Vistancia He started working here two years ago Yoursquove probably seen him walking the grounds keeping facilities stocked making sure trash cans are emptied and keeping an eye out for maintenance problems or any disturbances in the community

Vinny who was born in Phoenix AZ is 20 years old and is currently pursuing an education in computer science He has always had a passion for electronics He received an amateur radio license at a very young age and built a high end gaming computer in his free time Another hobby that Vinny is passionate about is motorcycles Ever since he got his first motorcycle for his 18th birthday Vinny has loved the riding community and spends most days off on long mountain rides with friends The next time you see Vinny driving through the community please say hello

I f you find yourself wanting to do some improvements by adding some landscape to your yard please do your homework

One of the most unfortunate situations I encounter are the ones where a plant or tree was installed long ago nurtured and care for established as a healthy addition to landscape but is then required to be cut down or removed This can be expensive leaving an empty spot that often requires a replacement plant and now the mature landscape is amiss These situations are common and can be avoided simply by selecting plants that are pre-approved If you donrsquot see a particular plant on the approved plant list and you would like to add this plant to your yard please submit an application for consideration

By moving forward without approval you may lose a perfectly healthy plant and take on unnecessary expenses to have it removedreplaced You can find the approved plant list for front yards in Appendix C and back yards in Appendix D of the Design Guidelines The Design Guidelines can be found by visiting wwwmyvistanciacom

Homemade popsicles are always on our summer bucket list They are easy and fun for kids to help make plus they taste yummy My little sous chef requested berry

popsicles this year They needed to have blueberries blackberries and raspberries and I just so happened to find a frozen bag of mixed berries that contained all of his suggested ingredients You can use fresh berries too but we love making fruit smoothies out of our leftover frozen berries The recipe calls for lemonade but you could also use coconut milk or make your own sugar-less lemonade for a healthier version

INSTRUCTIONSbull Fill paper cups with frozen berries

bull Pour lemonade into the berry filled cups leaving a little room at the top

bull Place a popsicle stick in the center of each cup

bull Freeze overnight

bull Once frozen peel the paper cup off of the popsicle and immediately enjoy outside before they melt

To make a fruit smoothie out of leftover ingredients add 2 cups water and 2 cups frozen berries + a banana to your blender and blend until smooth Feel free to add a cup of spinach or kale to the mix for extra greens

This monthrsquos golf tip is brought to you compliments of all of the guys that lost the US Open last month They

all had an opportunity to win the title and for one reason or another blew their chance

With this in mind follow these few easy steps to insure you win not lose

bull PrepareproperlyforthetypeofeventMost of the events you play and even your weekend games are stroke play and this means every shot counts In stroke play most people have less of the go for it mentality but still you there are times when you need to pull off a miracle shot There is a time and a place for everything Everything should not rely on the last shot you need to hit in the tournament

bull Play the golf course not the player Under normal circumstances if you beat the golf course you will beat your opponent whether you are playing match or stroke play Focus on each of your own golf shots You can only control your golf game not your opponentrsquos When playing in a golf tournament play golf shots that you practice Do not try to pull off the miracle shot as this will usually backfire on you

bull Use the golf course to your strengths From the teeing ground if the hole has trouble on the left side of the fairway set up on the left side of the tee box This will allow you to maximize the angle of where to hit the ball and ldquoplay away from the troublerdquo If there is water in front of the green (donrsquot use a water ball) use more club than may be necessary to insure clearing the water Play for the successful shot

bull Knowtheweatherconditionsandprepareaccordingly If it is going to be 110 degrees plan on having plenty of liquids to drink to stay hydrated (Most adult beverages actually dehydrate you so no beer during your match unless it is alcohol free) If rain is in the forecast bring extra towels an umbrella and a rain suit Most players do not prepare for the elements and pay the price for their oversight Keep your equipment protected Storing your clubs in the trunk when it is 100+ degrees outside and 200+ degrees in your car is not good for the grips

bull Stay in the moment Finally focus on playing one stroke at a time and one hole at a time Remember you can only control your actions so play high percentage golf shotsto help keep you in control Do not allow your mind to drift into thinking about your total 18-hole score when you have only reached the fifth hole and you are two under par Forget the past and focus on the future You cannot change the previous holesrsquo results If you are playing in a 36-hole or more event play that way It is not two 18-hole rounds it is one 36-hole round of golf By staying in the moment you will not get caught up in your surroundings and will be able to remain focused on the end result Swing the club donrsquot steer it Breathe and stay relaxed and you will be on your way to playing to win rather than playing to not lose For help with ldquowhen to go and not when to gordquo visit your favorite PGA Golf Professional

B lackstone Country Club at Vistancia has named Scott Heideman as the new General Manager of the Clubrsquos

operations and member experience Scott is a native of Minnesota and moved to Scottsdale in 1987 He began his career with Troon Golf in 1990 as Assistant Golf Professional and later Merchandiser at Troon North Golf Club Golf Digestrsquos Top 100 Courses in America In 1994

Scott earned the distinguished honor of becoming a member of the PGA of America and was named the Head Golf Professional at Troon North Golf Club

In 1997 Scott opened Talking Stick Golf Club in Scottsdale As the General Manager Scott was responsible for an upscale 36-hole facility all golf operations food and beverage operations and the agronomy staff He also served as the Chairperson for the Talking Stick Board of Directors which represented the enterprise for the SRPMIC Indian Community

of you keeping our community safe when I was assigned as one of the North Precinct Lieutenants a few years ago I come to this position ready to work With that said let me share with you some of my background I retired from the United States Air Force after serving 20 years After retirement I immediately accepted a job with the Peoria Police Department holding positions as Police Officer Recruit Training Officer Family Crimes Detective Police Sergeant Professional Standards Sergeant Police Patrol Lieutenant Training Lieutenant and now Police Commander

It will again be my pleasure to serve you and along with my staff continue to keep your community safe I will be starting my new duties in the next several weeks and my lieutenants sergeants and officers look forward to meeting with all of you and hearing your concerns on how we can better serve our community
