INTRODUCTION: This year several new trips are being offered, along with a few long-time favourites. Two trips will feature the Toronto Blue Jays on the road; one in Detroit, the other in Cleveland, while a new play in Lancaster will be a “must-see” for many. Finally, the glitz of Las Vegas, the magnificent canyons of Utah and Arizona and the ever present sunshine, will all combine for a memorable vacation. July 9 Today we visit L’Anse aux Meadows, a United Nations World Heritage Site, where Vikings settled over one thousand years ago. In St. Anthony we will board a vessel to learn about the delicate marine ecology and to hopefully see both whales and icebergs. These imposing blocks of ice which have broken off the continental glaciers, have drifted south propelled by the Labrador Current. Amazingly, 90% of the ice is below the water! July 10 Our day begins with a visit to a museum honouring Sir Wilfred Grenfell, a medical missionary who devoted his life’s work to the people of Northern Newfoundland and Labrador. We then begin our southward journey, viewing the rugged coastal scenery with a few stops along the way. Local entertainment will be provided by our hotel this evening. July 11 At the Lewisporte Heritage Centre we will learn about the history of the area, be entertained by local musicians and enjoy some light refreshments. Afterwards, we will stop at the Boyd’s Cove Beothuk Site and the “Prime Berth” fishing exhibit to learn more about the traditional way of life in rural outports. In Twillingate, options include a boat tour (see above), a winery tour, or a museum visit. July 12 Our first stop today will be at the North Atlantic Aviation Museum in Gander. The city has a proud connection to trans-Atlantic aviation crossings and it also played a crucial role on September 11, 2001. Next we drive to the Ryan Premises in Bonavista to visit an historic fish merchant operation and then to the famous lighthouse near the spot where John Cabot

October19 Departing from Buffalo, we will fly to Las Vegas. Upon arrival, we will tour The Venetian, one of the most impressive themed hotels on the strip, with faithful replications of St. Marks Square, Rialto Bridge and the Grand Canal, complete with gondolas. October 20 A short drive away is Valley of Fire State Park, so named because of it’s red sandstone formations. These were created by the application of intense heat and pressure to sand dunes that were later subjected to faulting and erosion. This evening at the Fremont Street Experience, you will find restaurants, live music and a light show which is projected on a giant overhead video screen containing 12.5 million LED lights. October 21 We will witness two distinctly different landscapes in Utah’s Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks. Zion was once covered by a shallow body of water but eventually huge rivers carved their way through the landscape. Later it became one of the largest deserts on the planet, whose sand dunes have become today’s 2,000 foot cliffs. Bryce Canyon is renowned for its variety of colours and for the having the earth’s greatest collection of “other worldly” hoodoos (odd-shaped pillars of rock). Breakfast is included today. October 22 After a short drive, we will take a Navajo guided tour of Antelope Slot Canyon, also aptly named “Corkscrew Canyon”. When illuminated by the sun, this passageway through sandstone rocks becomes nature’s masterpiece of colour. This afternoon we board a boat for a narrated tour of Lake Powell, including a different perspective of Antelope Canyon. We then check into our lakefront resort. Breakfast and dinner are included. October 23 Today our focus is Grand Canyon National Park, with many breathtaking picture stops along the south rim. There is no way to describe the sheer size and majesty of this amazing place - you have to experience it for yourself. We will stop for a picnic lunch in the park, weather permitting. October 24 After a scenic drive through Oak Creek Canyon, we will arrive in Sedona. Here we will take a famous “Pink Jeep” tour of the rugged back country. After some free time, we drive to Tuzigoot, a thousand year old village or pueblo, built by a culture known as the Sinagua. We will also stop at Montezuma Castle National Monument, one of the best preserved cliff dwellings in North America. Breakfast is included. Accommodation: DoubleTree by Hilton, Tempe, AZ (3 nights).
October 25 Driving east, we will join the Apache Trail which leads to the Superstition Mountains. Here we will stop briefly in the frontier town of Tortilla Flat, before boarding the Dolly Steamboat for a luncheon cruise on Canyon Lake. This lake is part of an extensive reservoir system that supplies Phoenix with water. On the tour, both desert and wetland vegetation will be seen, as well as possible sightings of mountain sheep and bald eagles. Breakfast and lunch are included today.
October 26 On a half day excursion to the Desert Botanical Gardens, a guide will introduce us to a wide variety of arid plants found in this part of the world. IMPORTANT TOUR AND RESERVATION INFORMATIONItinerary: It is our goal to operate the tour as described in this brochure. Verstraete Travel reserves the right to alter the itinerary if necessary. We have made arrangements with other independent parties and cannot be held responsible for their acts or omissions.Accommodation: Hotel phone numbers and pick-up details will be communicated approximately three weeks prior to departure. When completing the registration, please specify the type of accommodation that you require and ensure the correct price is entered. Room-service, in-room movies and snacks as well as telephone charges must be paid for by the user. Any damage done to public or private property while on the tour will be the responsibility of the person who causes the damage. Laundry facilities are available at many of the hotels.Baggage Information: Luggage size and weight must meet airline regulations. Each person is permitted one full-size piece and one carry-on piece. For tours which include luggage handling, if more than one piece is to be handled, a surcharge will be added depending on the tour length.Coach Seating: Luxury washroom-equipped buses will be rented from local companies for each tour. Call for details if you wish to know the specifi c company for each trip. A rotational seating policy will be in effect to ensure equity for all passengers throughout the trip.Tipping: When meals are provided, the gratuity is included. Although tips for step-on-guides and the bus driver are customary, they are not included in the tour price and will be left to the discretion of each passenger.What to bring: Weather conditions are unpredictable, especially near the ocean. It is a good idea to bring a sweatshirt and rain repellent jacket. Also bring a compact umbrella, binoculars, a camera and a bathing suit, since some hotels have pools.Border Crossing: The following regulations apply for travel into the United States. All Canadian citizens entering the U.S. by land or air, must have a passport. Non-citizen residents of Canada, or visitors to Canada, are required to have either a Permanent Resident Card, or to obtain a temporary entry visa prior to the trip (this will help to avoid any time consuming delays at the border).Conditions of Travel: It is expected that all passengers are able to operate independently or be accompanied by a qualifi ed assistant. Smoking and use of alcohol are not permitted on the motorcoach. Verstraete Travel reserves the right to terminate the trip of any member whose conduct is detrimental to the well-being of other passengers. In such a case no refund will be given, and the return fare will be at the person’s expense.Insurance: Verstraete Travel recommends the purchase of trip cancellation insurance as well as out-of-country health insurance. On the registration form, indicate your interest in purchasing such insurance and an agent will call to give you a quote.Tour Cancellation/Cut-off Date: Verstraete Travel reserves the right to cancel any tour no later than 30 days before departure, and it will have no other responsibility beyond refunding all fares paid to it by passengers. The cut-off date for joining each tour is stated in the brochure. A deposit is required to hold space, and bookings are made on a fi rst-come basis. Please reserve early to avoid disappointment.Exchange Rate: Verstraete Travel reserves the right to add a surcharge to the stated tour price, in order to cover further devaluation of the Canadian dollar from the time the brochure is written. In such a case the customer will be informed by the “deposit due date” so he/she can decide whether or not to join the tour.Payment/Cancellation Policy: Unless otherwise stated, a $300.00 per person deposit is required at the time of booking, along with a completed registration form. October 5 We take a scenic drive to Parry Sound’s Bobby Orr Museum which traces the hockey legend’s career.
