Thesis StatementThe United States actions to stop the genocide in Darfur have helped to advance United Nations peace keeping efforts but has not totally stopped the conflict because of a compromise of humanitarian and diplomatic considerations.

History• The conflict started in

February of 2003

• Between the Sudan Liberation Army and Justice and Equality Movement against the government and the Janjaweed militia

• Conflict started because Black Africans felt that the government oppressed them in favor of Arabs

• Janjaweed militia accused of “cleansing Black Africans” from large territories in Sudan

History (cont.)• Janjaweed kill men, rape women, and

raid houses

• More than 2.7 million have lost their homes and live in camps

• The US and human right groups have said genocide is taking place

• UN investigation team in 2005 concluded that war crimes had been committed, but these war crimes did not include genocide

• Reports concluded the conflict in Darfur has been stabilizing, armed conflict in the area is nearly over

UN Solutions• 2004: Began relocating

refugees to the first safe camps

• Joint Communique was signed by UN and Sudan pledged to end conflict in Darfur

• Pledged to help African Union deploy ceasefire monitors and provide humanitarian aid

• July 31st passed Resolution 1769 -deployed more than 26,000 troops and police to Darfur

United States Assisting Darfur

• Ceasefire agreement signed & peace talks given

• African Mission in Sudan

• Reinforce weapon restrictions & U.S. ban against military assist to Sudan

• Start the North-South comprehensive Peace agreement

Violating Human Rights

• Article 3: everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security

• Article 5: no one should be subject to torture or treated unfairly by brutal or degrading treatment

• Article 7: equal protection against being discriminated

• Article 9: no one should be sent away

The Aftermath•War is at a stand still

for now

• Janjaweed stocking up on weapons

• Fear of more war

Conclusion• U.S. actions have helped to advance UN peace

keeping efforts but has not totally stopped the conflict.

• U.S. has imposed economic sanctions to provide incentives to end the conflict.

• UNAMID concluded that the Darfur conflict has substantially subsided and stability exists in the region with general elections scheduled in 2010.

• President Obama has resisted demands for direct and greater U.S. involvement and insists that Sudan should determine its own future with oversight from the UN.

• We agree with President Obama’s position because we do not want to Sudan to become another Iraq where the U.S. has a great military presence.
