• Summer Assignments:• Use the rubric to evaluate YOUR Own work.• Then, in your sketchbook, create a mindmap
reflection that answers these questions:• 1. What makes a good portrait?• 2. In what ways could I improve my drawings?• 3. What are my upcoming goals?

Gradation Review
Gradation is a subtle change in shade, tone, and/or color (hue).
On a value scale: White is added to create a tint Black is added to create a shade Grey is added to create a tone The grey-scale has 9 main stages (or keys); White = high key (low value) Black = low key (high value)
![Page 14: Unit 1 Layout - Weebly](https://reader030.vdocuments.mx/reader030/viewer/2022012723/61b56f7be4d4783af96b2a7f/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Gradation
When creating tonal values in a gradation: Dark areas should be saturated with greys/color
(no streaks). Light areas should be extremely light to white. In pencil, light areas should be clean white. No rubbing, smudging, etc.

Choosing the Right Tool
Do not use mechanical pencils. F & HB (#2) have a medium darkness & minimal
smudging. H pencils are smudge resistant & better for
technical drawings & illustrations. They are lighter than #2 pencils.
B pencils are softer & smooth, but smudge easily; good for artistic drawings.

Practice your skills
In your sketchbook: Draw a 4.5” rectangle & divide it into 9
0.5” sections. The 1st section should be the darkest black
you can achieve with your pencil; the 9th
section should be white. Beginning with 2, fill-in each section, one
value lighter each section.

Practice your skills
In your sketchbook:Draw a 4.5” rectangle below your previous rectangle.
Create a smooth gradation based on the tonal values above.

Refine your skills
In your sketchbook:◦Draw a 3.5” square…◦ Inside, draw a circle with a 3.0” diameter and fill with your best pencil gradation.◦*Use the sphere resources posted for tips.

15 Spheres Draw a 1” border around the sheet of paper
supplied. Create at least 15 spheres using any
composition within the space allotted. Each sphere must overlap with at least one
other; no sphere may be left standing alone. They must be at least 1” diameter or larger. Shading must show a consistent light source. Dark areas must be dark. Optional: Shade in the negative space.

• Submit a photograph of yourself (4”x6” to 8”x10” in size).
• It should be of your face only – nothing covering any of your features (no sunglasses, masks, scarves, etc.).
• Try to avoid strange angles or perspective – photos should be taken straight-on.
• Be sure tonal values are balanced.• If your photo is not submitted in class by the due-date,
your freshman yearbook photo will be used.
