Twilight Country Fair This time tomorrow we will be busy setting up for our Twilight Country Fair! There has been a lot of planning over an extended period of time and we are all looking forward to seeing the hard work pay off with a fun and successful evening. We really hope everyone can find a way to be a part of it, helping out on a roster, shopping at the stalls, joining in the fun and supporting our school. We look forward to seeing you all for lots of

fun.

Children’s Week 2015 Children’s Week is a national program recognising the talents, skills, achievements and rights of young people. It is based on the articles expressed in the ‘United Nations Convention on the Right of the Child’, highlighting play,

wellbeing and protection.

This year, Children's Week will take place on Saturday 24 October - Sunday 1 November 2015.

The national theme for 2015 is Celebrating the 25th Anniversary since Australia signed the United Nations

Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The Department works in partnership with local governments, Victorian schools and early childhood services to host activities during Children's

Week that focus community attention on the needs and achievements of children and young people as they thrive, learn and grow.

During Children’s Week, local councils, organisations, schools and early childhood services organise a range of open days, displays

and special events that celebrate childhood and showcase children's achievements.

All Children’s Week events are offered free-of-charge to Victorian families with children aged 0 to 12 years. This represents a great

opportunity for Victorian families to enjoy a fun, engaging and educational experience at minimal expense.

Is Your Child Starting Secondary School Next Year?

Parents of our grade 6 students will tell you that it doesn’t seem that long ago that their child was starting school. The primary years seem to fly by and our

grade sixes are already three weeks into their final term of primary school.

Secondary school can be a daunting thought for not only our students but parents as well. There are many questions which we are sure you have, which are

not fully answered at information nights and orientation days.

The Department of Education and Training have developed an informative site which provides hints and tips on how to support your child through the

transition to secondary school.

During the school term you will receive emails that will include tips, advice and information on supporting your child to make the transition from primary to secondary school. Recent articles have included Preparing for next year, Homework and Stepping up to Secondary School. To receive articles please

Aerobics

What an amazing time everyone had at aerobics on Saturday. The Spring Challenge is a great time for more students to become involved in our aerobics program and have the

chance to perform in front of a large audience.

We would like to thank Candice Nyman and Lara Mackie for their efforts, not just this week, but throughout the year. Their never ending drive, support and great coaching skills are appreciated by all. A huge thank you must also be afforded to everyone else who worked very hard to ensure that the Spring Challenge ran smoothly. It was great to

see the excited ‘buzz’ at school – this was certainly contagious!!

Goal Setting for a Successful Term

Planning ahead is an important skill that can be learnt and further developed at all ages – even adults! Organisation, at school, means setting a goal to do your best in your school work, listening carefully to your teacher’s instructions, planning your time so that you are not rushed, having all your school supplies ready at a neat

table, recording your projects and their due dates and planning when you are going to do your homework so that you have enough time.

Two positive Habits of the Mind that help develop a young person’s organisation include:

Setting Goals - means thinking that setting a goal can help me to be more successful at a task.

Planning My Time - means thinking about how long it will take me to do my school work and planning enough time to get it done.

Some ideas to help children become more organised and have a more successful term are:

1. Chunking: Breaking complex tasks into small, manageable steps. For instance, week-long homework projects can be broken down into a series of smaller tasks

that can be completed daily.

2. Managing time: Time planning tools such as lists and diaries can help children keep schedules, hand work in on time and help prevent children overestimating

what they can achieve.

3. Have regular homework time. Establish a regular homework time and help your child to stick to it. If no formal homework has been set then use this time for reading.

4. Have morning round-up. Remind children of the day’s events each morning so they can plan accordingly.

5. Use routines and structure. There are times when so much is going on in young people’s lives that they need structure and

routine to help them get organised. Gentle reminders to pack lunches, take notices to school and even to dress appropriately can

assist children when they are busy.

6. Clear away the clutter. A regular clean-up of desks and work areas can help children regain control of their environment.

Parliament and Civics Students from our school will soon be undertaking, an education tour of the national capital. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational

programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those

costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

Lunchtime Clubs It is fantastic to see the huge amount of students who are involved in lunchtime clubs on a

daily basis. Apart from aerobics and tae kwon do, students are able to choose an activity

from a variety of clubs. The clubs are many and varied with 4 or 5 options available every

day. Clubs on offer in term 4 include:

Crystal growing – exploring different substances and the types of crystals that can be

grown.

Lego – working with a partner to build a lego masterpiece.

Origami – using the Japanese technique of paper folding to create anything from a bird

to an envelope.

Colouring and Construction – utilizing art/ paper skills to cut, fold and colour.

Environment – gardening, recycling, mud brick making.

Maintenance/ gardening – sweeping paths, fixing garden beds, raking.

DS club – a range of games are available.

Grade Six Graduation Preparations have begun for Grade six graduation. Information will be sent home on a regular basis and your children will be kept informed of developments as they occur. The year six students are also preparing for the next phase of their education. It is an exciting time for them with many changes occurring as they progress through to Secondary College. Discuss the transition with your child in a positive way to ensure that the transition is a smooth one. Should you have any concerns please speak to your child’s teacher at the school.
