Trump Turnberry boasts an incredibly rich history, not only in the game ofgolf, but in the history of Scotland itself. The iconic Turnberry Lighthousesits atop the ruins of the 13th century castle of King Robert the Bruce, whowas born on this sacred piece of land in July of 1274 and later confirmedScotland’s independence in the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314.

Built in 1873 by pioneering Scottish lighthouse designer Thomas Stevenson,father of author Robert Louis Stevenson (made famous for his works“Treasure Island,” “Kidnapped” and “Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr.Hyde”), the lighthouse was constructed to allow seafaring vessels the abilityto safely navigate the treacherous coastline. Moreover, Turnberry wastransformed to serve the Royal Air Force (RAF), while the illustriousTurnberry hotel was commissioned as a Royal Naval Hospital during bothWorld Wars.

In 2016, world-renowned architect, Martin Ebert, skillfully redesigned thelegendary Ailsa course into the extraordinary 18-hole masterpiece you seetoday. Set along the rugged coastline, overlooking the outer “Firth of Clyde,”the spectacular setting creates a golfing experience unlike any other!

LOCAL RULES

1. OUT OF BOUNDS - A ball is out of bounds if it lies:a. Beyond any fence bounding the course (as at the 1st, 3rd and 18th holes).b. Beyond white stakes of the car park left of the 1st fairway and to the leftof the 18th green.

2. WATER HAZARDS (Rule26-1)Ordinary water hazards are defined by yellow stakes and lateral water hazardsare defined by red stakes. Note: Holes 4 to 11 inclusive have red stakes atbeach level.

3. IMMOVABLE OBSTRUCTIONS (Rule 24-2)Immovable obstructions include the starters hut at the 1st hole, the cairnstone at the 9th hole and the bridge at the 16th hole.

4. BURN AT THE 16TH HOLE (Rule 25-2)The upward (green side) slope of the burn at the 16th hole, between thebridges, may be deemed a closely mown area for the purpose of embedded ball.

5. PRACTICE PUTTING GREENSA ball lying on any practice green may be lifted and dropped without penaltywithin one club length of the nearest point of relief, but not nearer the hole.

6. PATHS, ROAD AND RUNWAY AREA (Rule 28)On all paths, road and old runway areas within the boundary of the course,the ball may be played as it lies or deemed unplayable.

7. POP-UP SPRINKLER HEADS (Rule 24-2)All pop-up sprinkler heads are immovable obstructions.

8. STONES IN BUNKERS In bunkers, stones lying close to the player’s ball may be removed,without penalty.

9. GROUND UNDER REPAIRPlay from Ground Under Repair is forbidden.

Golfers are encouraged to take advantage of a ten minute refreshmentbreak at the half-way house in the Turnberry Lighthouse.

HOLE 2 APPROACH

The hole is named “Make Sure” for a reason. Poorshots will be punished with trouble lurking in almostevery direction. Strategically placed fairway bunkers anda steep slope to the left of the fairway and green are justa few of the problems facing players. The green isdeceptively long and will require careful club selection to avoid leaving a long, difficult putt.

The translation of “Blaw Wearie” isliterally “Out of Breath” and this maywell be the case as the prevailing windblows into the face of the golfer. Thislong par 4 will require two good shotsto find the green in regulation and a par is always a good score.

“Woe-Be-Tide” is a light-hearted warning to be aware of the Firth ofClyde and other possible hazards on the left of the hole. This is thefirst hole of an incredible eight hole coastal sequence and such astunning stretch of seaside holes must be unmatched in the golfingworld. As you take a moment to truly appreciate the splendour ofthis fabulous hole please ensure that you take enough club to carry

all the trouble that lies short of this putting surface.

The 5th green is set in a cove at the bottom of the dunes.“Fin Me Oot”, meaning “find me out”, is appropriately

named to encourage players to seek out the putting surface.Players should look to hit their tee shot down the right sideof the fairway to leave the best possible view of the green.The next shot must be accurate as an array of devilishly

hard bunkers is waiting for any errant shot.

The walk from the 5th green up to the 6th tees is one of thefinest and most breath taking in golf and from here you get themost incredible view of Turnberry Beach and beyond. “TappieToorie” calls for players to “Hit to the Top”since the green sitsat the summit of a particularly steep slope. The name emphasisesthe importance of reaching the green as the bunkers short of

the green will test the skills of the finest golfers.

HOLE 7 APPROACH

“Round The Mountain” is the translated name of this hole. It requires a tee shot between the bunker on the left of the fairway and the twosmaller bunkers on the right. The longer players may be able to cut off a fraction of the dog-leg and take a braver line over the ridge on the left.The approach shot is uphill and the green slopes from back to front.Bunkers to the right of the green and a valley of deep rough on the left,

will require a well executed shot to find the putting surface.

HOLE 8 APPROACH

“Goat Fell” takes it name from the tallest peak onthe Isle of Arran, which is visible directly across theFirth of Clyde. The narrow fairway is guarded bythree bunkers on the right and therefore requires a precise tee shot. The majority of trouble is short of the green and visible on this hole. Careful clubselection is paramount on this two-tiered green.

HOLE 9 Bruce’s Castle PAR 3

Can there be a more exhilarating par 3 in world golf? The remains of Robertthe Bruce’s Castle can be seen from the 9th green. Turnberry Castle was thebirthplace of Robert the Bruce in 1274 and he was King of Scots from

1306 – 1329. This awe inspiring long par three played across the bay withthe iconic Turnberry Lighthouse in full view is both beautiful and dramatic.This challenging short hole demands your full respect and the carry distance

cannot be underestimated so ensure you have enough club.

HOLE 10 APPROACH

“Dinna Fouter” translates to “Don’t Mess About” and it is best to adhere tosuch advice. The hole arcs its way around the bay and poses questions to thegolfer for all of the shots. The Firth of Clyde awaits players who hit their teeshot too far left, there is more room right than would appear standing on thetee. The famous ‘doughnut’ bunker in the approach has to be taken into consideration when deciding whether to attack or lay up. The incredible green location is heavily guarded and supreme accuracy is the key.

Maidens is the small village on the periphery of the course.This dramatic setting is a fitting end to the most incredibleeight hole coastal stretch in golf. This amazing short holeplays over a series of small bays and rocky outcrops whereagain club selection is key. Anything short of the smallapron to the green or left of the hole is in trouble, so

finding this green with your tee shot is vital.

HOLE 12 APPROACH

The monument on the hill above the green commemorates the lostairmen stationed at Turnberry during the World Wars. A brave teeshot is required down the left hand side of the fairway and playerswill have to flirt with the fairway bunkers in order to gain the bestview of the green for the approach shot. The green is bigger than itappears and the rise in elevation may require players to hit an extra

club in order to find the putting surface successfully.

HOLE 13 APPROACH

Golfers preparing to hit their approach to this elevated green will be facedwith a “Tricky Little Stroke”. There are three bunkers guarding the leftside of the fairway, on this dog-leg hole, and a combination of mounds andsand craters on the right. This makes finding the fairway from the tee amust and from there the approach shot is played to a plateau green that hasan incline to the front that makes it look particularly small, but, in actual

fact it is one of the largest putting surfaces on the course.

HOLE 14 APPROACH

The daunting name of this hole is well deserved. This fantastic Par 5,snaking its way from the tees up to an elevated green with spectacular seaviews and the magnificent Turnberry Lighthouse as a focal point. The twofairway bunkers must be avoided with the tee shot and then care must betaken to consider all the options when deciding your strategy with the next shot. Enjoy the incredible view when you reach this green but also take time to study your line on this tricky undulating surface.

Any errant shots will be heavily punished so “Take Care” is thewarning on this, the last of the short holes. A steep banking infront of and to the right of the green will consume errant shotsand leave players with an unpredictable lie and certainly no viewof the pin. Waiting on the left is more trouble in the shape ofthree bunkers and the contours of the green will require a gentletouch as the slope will make any bunker shot perilously fast.

HOLE 16 APPROACH

This hole is named after Wilson’s Burn. The “LittleBurn” running across the front of the green may notseem so little when you are faced with the task of eithercarrying it or suffering the consequences. A good teeshot down the right half of the fairway will leave theoptimum angle to approach the green but beware as a watery grave awaits those who are not successful.

“Lang Whang” translates to “Long Whack” and that isexactly what is required to reach this long Par 4 in twoshots. Please be wary of the bunker on the right as thecontours of the fairway will gather tee shots towards it.The testing approach shot will have to carry the steepridge in order to find the putting surface and when thereyou will be faced with a green full of subtle contours.

HOLE 18 APPROACH

The finishing hole of the Ailsa Course was renamed in honour of the1977 Open Championship, which is regarded by many as the finestMajor Championship ever played. The 1977 Open saw Tom Watsonand Jack Nicklaus battling it out, shot for shot, over four incredibledays with Tom Watson lifting the Claret Jug after the most dramaticfinish on this hole. Negotiating the fairway bunkers is a must of thetee and too far right will be in trouble as gorse bushes will be waitingfor you. The approach shot should be aimed for the right half of thegreen as there is an incline on the left that may leave a tricky chip.
