Sika-Trocal membrane systems can be flat for economy and performance, plus their versatilityallows the Architect to design fully seamless and waterproof vertical and curved surfaces. Thisflexibility allows complex refurbishment projects to be undertaken easily.

▲▲ Restraint/Fixing MethodAn advantage of the Sika-Trocal range of single ply membrane systems is that the mostappropriate restraint or fixing can be selected for each project or even different parts of a project.For example, mechanical fixing for new structural steelwork, adhesive bonding for refurbishment(i.e over substrates with hidden electrical, mechanical or water services), and directly loaded inballasted roofs and roof gardens etc.
Sika-Trocal membrane systems include specific products designed for ‘fully exposed’ or‘covered/buried’ installations. It is important to note that these two types of requirement needvery different membrane properties, i.e:
▲ Exposed - requires high UV light resistance
▲ Covered/buried - requires good anti-bacterial properties.
Owing to chemical reasons, these characteristics can not be optimised in the same membranes.However, Sika-Trocal has specifically designed membrane system solutions for each of thesefundmental requirements.

The versatility of the Sika-Trocal range, with mechanically fixed, adhered or ballastedrestraining methods, means that almost all kinds of substrate can be easily and successfullywaterproofed. Suitable substrates include steel, concrete, timber and other existing roof finishes,such as deteriorated and traditional bitumen and felt materials.

Sika-Trocal are the only ‘full range’ single ply roof membranesystem suppliers. In addition to market leadership in advanced‘built up’ single ply roofing systems, we are also the market andwaterproofing technology leaders in the field of membrane facedcomposite panels. This is a result of our Group philosophy ofcultivating selective strategic partnerships.
In many applications the structure can only be successfullywaterproofed using a ‘built up’ system approach. In others both‘built up’ and ‘composite’ options can be equal in cost andprogramme time - so other selection criteria must beconsidered including:

Sika-Trocal’s patented ‘discrete disc’ fastening andwelding system is undoubtedly the quickest andsimplest method of single ply membrane installationon site (i.e. the standard Trocal ‘S’ mechanically fixedsystem).
On large open roofs, seam fastened, hot air weldedsystems (i.e. Sikaplan VG) are also fast and availablefrom Sika Limited.
For the primary function of a roof to be waterproofingmay be obvious - BUT this is still the main cause ofroofing problems!
Sika-Trocal fully welded and tested, seamlesssystems avoid potential leaks and ensure a watertightsolution for whatever your design intentions. The name Sika® is synonymous with waterproofingand has been since 1910 in Switzerland and 1926 inthe UK and Ireland.

Full Sika-Trocal purpose-designed fixing systemswith standard connection details are available. (CADon request.) Extremely simple connection is possibleto all ancillary details including gutters, gullies,rooflights, walkways etc.

Infrequent general roof maintenance traffic acrossthe roof is possible and acceptable.

The best cost performance restrainedmembrane which is specifically designedfor ballasted roofs and roof gardens whichare becoming increasingly popular, notleast for environmental reasons. Sika-Trocal have long and extensive experiencein this field.
UV stabilisers are omitted and anti-bacterial protectants are added in themembrane formulation for durability underballast or green roof installations. It is notalways recognised by some membranemanufacturers, who promote ‘standard usemembranes’ for both exposed and buriedapplications, that the necessary anti-bacterial agents are attacked and destroyedby the UV light stabilising additives!Therefore, the same membranes should notbe used for both types of installation.

Requirement: The roof to the gigantic Köln Arena Hall hasa surface area of 17,000 m2 and is at aheight of 42 m above the ground. As wellas shielding the hall against the weather,the roof must protect the surroundingneighbourhood from excessive noiseemanating from within the hall.
Solution:The roof is a ‘sandwich’ construction usingsound insulation strips and thermalinsulation boards, with a Sika-Trocal PVCmembrane mechanically fixed to thesurface, ensuring long-termweatherproofing and watertightness.

Requirement: Commonly known as "The Cylinder", thisbasketball stadium was constructed fromreinforced concrete, 25 m high and 95 m indiameter, producing a concave structurewith an area of 6,600 m2. The traditionalbituminous felt roof system cracked andneeded frequent repairs, so a long-termsolution was sought.
Solution:A permanently flexible PVC membrane fromSika-Trocal was specified to cater for thelarge movements of the roof. This wassuccessfully installed in just 32 days,including preparation and cleaning of thesubstrate, and is still providing totalwatertightness over 16 years later.

Requirement: Designed by the renowned architect Felix Candela,The Oceanographic Museum at the City of Arts &Sciences is composed of 11 buildings locatedaround the perimeter of an artificial lake, forming anunderwater city showing all the oceans of the world,interconnected above and below ground. Clearly,waterproofing is very important in this complex.
Solution:Sika® Spain supplied around 25,000 m2 of PVC roofmembranes for surface roofs and for ballasted roofs,ensuring excellent long-term weatherproofing.

Requirement: Tesco, in partnership with Samsung, wanted tobuild a 57,000 m2 warehouse in South Korea. UKarchitect Smith Smalley was in charge of thedesign and wanted 100% confidence in the roofwaterproofing system.

Problem: IKEA was constructing a 50,000 m2 warehouse,with work starting in January and temperaturesoften as low as -15°C. In addition, a moredurable alternative to previously problematicbituminous roofs was sought.
Solution:Sika-Trocal was able to provide the idealsolution - a PVC membrane offering fast, reliableinstallation in cold weather.
