On the eve of valentine day,
14th February 2010, Sangat Development Foun-dation with support of Indus For All Program,WWF Pakistan organized one day seminar onthe importance of the trees and wetlands topreserve and sustain the eco system and alsoplantation on the wetlands and plants distribu-tion among the villagers of Faiz Muhammad
Pahnwar on the site of Chhuchh Wetland DehAkro-II, Nawabshah.
While speaking on the occasion, CaptainTasneem Muzaffar first offered his gratitude’sto Sangat team for undertaking environment
and biodiversity friendly task, which wouldplay greater role for the protection of eco-system and also biodiversity of the Deh Akro-IIwhich has been degraded largely since last cou-ple of decades.
He further said that there is need of sustainedand long term efforts for the rehabilitation ofvery unique Deh Akro-II desert wetlands, which are harbouring very rare and vulnerable
species of the world.
Due to have no proper and effective supervi-sion on the wetlands and their biodiversity, thewetlands have lost their beauty and becomevulnerable spots for the fauna and flora of thearea. Once these wetlands of Deh Akro-II werethe favorite places for the migratory birds andfor other fauna, and
alsomany animal speciessuch as deer, hog deer
were found in hugequantity but today wet-lands presenting verypathetic and deteriora-tion conditions, whichdemands very specialattentions from all stake-holders and organiza-tion working on the wet-lands development, re-
habilitation and management in Pakistan andabroad.
More than 500
plants of different kinds of species
were also disturbed
among the people of various villagers of

He warned that if spe-cial and speedy effortswould not be taken forthe development andrehabilitation of Deh Akro-II wetlands, the wet-lands complex of more than 34 wetlands wouldbe finished once for all.
Mr. Faiz Muhammad Panhwar
a local lord of the area has said that Sangat De-velopment Foundation and WWF Pakistan arethe first organizations working for the rehabili-tation of the wetlands of the area, which were
always ignored inthe past. He appre-ciated the efforts ofthe both organiza-tion and offered his
full support and cooperation for rehabilitationof the wetlands of the area.
He further added that influential persons of the
district are involved in the large scale of defor-estation in the area. “They used to cut the treesfor making money but it is the wetlands andtheir biodiversity which has suffered a lot” headded.
If the deforestation issue would not be resolvedin Deh Akro-II, it would be tantamount of de-liberate efforts by the anti nature elements todestroy the natural hub of wetlands and biodi-versity of the area, which is very unique spot ofthe world.
While speaking in the program, Mr. Nisar A.Brohi, Director, Sangat Development Founda-tion said that it is responsibility of all local

stakeholders espe-cially of the localcommunity to playtheir role in the con-servation efforts ofthe wetlands biodi-versity in DehAkro-II. Until andunless the local in-habitants would notshow their commit-ment for the protec-
tion and rehabilitation of the biodiversity of thewetlands, all efforts would be useless.
He added that it is time we should all join
hands and make collective efforts for the pro-tection and conservation of the biodiversity ofthe wetlands of Deh Akro-II.
Mr. Brohi appreciated the efforts of “VillageBased Wetlands Protection Committees(VBWCPs)” efforts for the protection of thenatural resources of the wetlands and their rolein making all possible efforts to stop cuttingand over greasing of the trees of the area, whichare sole habitats for the endangered species of
wetlands in Deh Akro-II.
He said that the VBWPCs are also striving forthe stopping the illegal hunting of the endan-gered species’ of the areas, especially of the mi-gratory birds-ambassadors for biodiversity.
He also showed his concerns that once DehAkro-II was welcoming spot of the migratorybirds, but today it has become very dangersplace for the vulnerable birds and animal spe-
cies, because there has been no check on the il-legal hunting in the area.
He appealed to the local community to comeforward and own the wetlands and their biodi-versity and work for the conservation as well asprotection of the remaining fauna and flora ofthe area.
