Did you make any New Year resolutions? Most of us do so in a fit of post-Christmas guilt at over indulgences or a short-lived puritanical spirit that doesn’t last beyond January 5th.

Just to help then we have come up with five suggestions that we hope will make 2011 a nicer year for everyone.

Drink less, give up smoking, treat your body to a new fitness regime. OK, so taken together it’s a bit radical, but spread it out over the next 12 months and you could be a leaner, fitter, happier person by the end of 2011.

Recycle more – every little bit helps and there are recycling bins on nearly every corner of the island these days. Make the effort.

Speak more Spanish – you’re never too late to learn or improve your existing vocabulary.

Visit at least five previously unseen parts of Tenerife – it might be a small island but it contains a wealth of interesting places to see and experience, so get out and explore.

Think positive! They keep telling us there is light at the end of the financial tunnel. Let’s starting thinking more positively, even if it doesn’t help with your bank balance in the short term it may give you the extra lift you need to discover new opportunities.

Sometimes it’s easy to forget that the Canary Islands are, for most of the time, a pretty good place to live.If you have spent more than a few years here and set up home, are working and raising a family, you tend to forget the pluses concentrating, as you do, on the day to day stuff, mortgages, keeping the fridge full, school runs...So now and then it makes sense to stop and smell the Canarian roses.There are very few places in the world that have the enviable climate we can pretty much rely upon here in the Canary Islands. Apart from the odd wet (ok, in recent times very wet!) day, most of the islands experience delightful climates, with a trip to the beach an all-year-around choice. The other thing that maybe we take for granted, or perhaps don’t allow ourselves to experience, is the richness of the diverse cultures around us. We live in a real salad bowl of nationalities, identities and backgrounds. Taking your child to school the likelihood is that there are parents from Spain, South America, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, England, Ireland, Belgium, Croatia, all chatting away in their differing levels of Spanish, exchanging news about their kids, who are and represent the next generation of Canarians. With just a smattering of Spanish we can delve into the rich cultural mix that we have here, and making friends with people we might never meet living our ‘old’ or other lives. It’s a huge plus, one we might not make the most of, but there to be exploited.If someone is asking about coming to live in the Canary Islands it’s hard to know what to advise – if you live here and made the move you often know instinctively who is going to make it and who won’t. But those who are almost guaranteed to get the most out of their time here are those who see the full picture and are willing to take the plunge and find out what the real Canaries, beyond the sea and sun, are all about.

He, along with tourism councillor Miguel Ángel Santos were genuinely delighted to be able, at last, to lay the foundations for the new beach at the resort village, and the presence of the Spanish government’s senior representative in the Canaries, Carolina Darias, underlined the importance they place on boosting the local economy along this stretch of Adeje coast line.Residents, tourists, restaurant and business owners were all present on the day to witness the inauguration of something that had been promised for so long but many had begun to believe would never happen.

January 5th is a big day in the festive calendar for children, as it is the day when traditionally, gifts are given. It is also a day with an extremely busy schedule for the Three Kings.On the evening of January 5th, the Three Kings in all their finery, and their camels arrive, to the delight of the eager children, in some cases by helicopter and some by ferry or other means (they are so determined to reach everyone). The procession fascinates the young audience, and afterwards while the children are still being entertained, Balthazar, Gaspar and Melchior

secretly visit each of their homes to deliver their presents (provided, of course, they have behaved themselves during 2010). In Santa Cruz, on January 5th at 5pm, the Three Kings arrive at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium. A procession begins at 7pm with the Kings riding their camels through the city, finishing in the Plaza de La Candelaria.In Adeje, the Kings will arrive at 5pm by helicopter at the town’s football ground and the procession will finish in Calle Grande.In Los Cristianos, the Kings arrive by ferry at 7.15pm and the procession

begins at the port, going through Avenida de Suecia and finishing at the Cultural Centre.This event is also celebrated in San Crístobal de La Laguna and Puerto de la Cruz. Check in your area for more information.

27th Canary Islands Music FestivalThe Canary Islands Music Festival was founded in 1985 and celebrates its 27th edition this year. It was originally designed to enrich the cultural programme of a region with a long tradition in classical music.

Every year this festival brings the best orchestras, musicians and soloists to the islands, and unites hundreds of classical music fans.A numerous cast of top artists have taken part, including Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Muti, Daniel Baremboim, Sir Colin Davis, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Sir Simon Rattle, and soloists like Mstislav Rostropovich, Krystian Zimmermann, Ivo Pogorelich, Vladimir Ashkenazy and Isaac Stern amongst others.Events in Tenerife will be taking place at the Auditorium and Teatro Guimerá in Santa Cruz, and the Teatro Leal, La Laguna. The start of the new year brings this annual celebration to Costa Adeje, in which the local countryfolk and farmers show their devotion to their patron saint. They do this in a very special manner by bringing their farm animals down to the coast of Adeje for a ritual dip in the sea at La Enramada.The animals, a mixed bunch but mostly horses, are ridden into the water, an act which is credited with numerous miracles and cures. Thousands of pilgrims of all ages and from all parts of the island

attend this celebration with the hope of achieving a rapid recovery to good health or to request or fulfil a promise. There are usually numerous offerings left at the

nearby chapel of San Sebastián where several religious services will be held and the day finishes with live music played by local bands and a fireworks display.

These colourful fiestas which include the first romería of the year are celebrated in the

traditional old town of Arona and Buenavista del Norte on the Sunday following the festival on

the 17th and the last Sunday of the month respectively. These fiestas are also celebrated in Güímar, La Orotava, Los Silos and La Laguna.This is one of the most important fiestas of the year for Arona, and one which the town’s residents enjoy to the full. The Romería is the second oldest in the municipality and stands out because during the procession, many animals are blessed by San Antonio Abad, the town’s patron.

Aracaladanza Dance Company was formed in 1994 under the direction of choreographer Enrique Cabrera.The mission of the company was quite simple; introduce new audiences to the world of contemporary dance, particularly young people and families. Paris born Sole Giménez is one of the most recognised and critically acclaimed female jazz voices in Spain. My upper molars are in very bad condition. What can I do about this?

The main function of molars is to chew or grind food and the absence of one or two molars can have a negative effect on your complete mouth, including the muscles and articulations of the jaw. This absence can also cause chronic headaches and, aesthetically, changes to the facial frame and even the appearance of wrinkles. The loss of molars, however, can be dealt with by your dental clinic where an analysis should be made following each extraction to obtain information which will help to avoid further problems.

If I need to have any molars extracted and have to make a decision, what would you advise?

There are two possibilities.The first is that a bridge can be created by using neighbouring teeth, and the second option is a dental implant.With a bridge, it will be necessary to reduce

the neighbouring teeth so that the bridge can be fitted.With the second option, a dental implant can be fitted without touching the neighbouring teeth. This process takes more time and the bone needs to be in good condition.

What are the advantages of implants in this case?

Usually implants are made of pure titanium with a very sophisticated and sterile surface treatment. So that the implant can be fitted successfully, it will be necessary to create a strong connection between the bone and

In the case of a limited bone loss, the creation of new bone will be done when the implant is fitted. A medium level bone loss requires high precision techniques and special materials. For a serious bone loss, we will undertake the following in different parts of the mouth: regeneration of the

bone supporting the upper molars and a block of bone for the interior sections. These are advanced techniques which require an experienced specialist.

how long will I have to wait for my permanent replacement tooth?

Of course you want it fitted as soon as possible! The answer lies in the bone integration, and the speed of this process whereby the implant will become totally fixed and solid, depends on the bone, the implant and your specialist. The stronger the bone, the faster this will be. Generally we are talking about a period between immediately and up to six months. If the bone is in good condition, you may be able to have your final tooth fitted at the same time as the implant.Nowadays, with scientific improvements and the latest generation models, implants are an extremely efficient method which should definitely be considered for tooth replacement. Of course, you need to consult a specialist.

how long will my implants last?

With the exception of tooth decay, implants suffer from more or less the same periodontal diseases as natural teeth, for example inflamed gums, bone loss, etc. A regular six-monthly check-up is recommended. The diseases are classified and the treatments specific.

A healthy lifestyle starting with breakfast…Make the most of your day by giving it a good start. A healthy breakfast is the beginning of a great day, with you feeling awake, energetic and vital.

A healthy breakfast should contain some carbohydrates for energy (preferably of low glycemic index), some good proteins (not only necessary as building blocks in the body, but they also keep us feeling full for longer), and fibre (helps prevent certain diseases, and is beneficial to the digestive system, helping to maintain/achieve a healthy body weight).Healthy sources of carbohydrates include oats and fibrous breakfast cereals, wholegrain bread,

and fruits. These food products are also high in fibres. Vegetables can, with great advantage, also be added to a healthy breakfast as they, at any meal, are of added benefit. They contain plenty of fibre, vitamins and minerals, and most of them are very low in calories.Healthy sources of protein at your breakfast table can include a boiled egg, lean meats (turkey, ham, etc.), beans, and lean dairy products (milk, yoghurt, cheese). Nuts and seeds provide plenty of protein, and also minerals and healthy fats.It is never recommendable to skip breakfast. It is the meal that will help get your metabolism started in the morning and it provides you with the essential energy needed for the day’s challenges. Skipping breakfast has also been proven to make us more prone to unhealthy choices at lunch. If you find you are not hungry in the morning it is usually an indicator that you have eaten too much during the previous evening. You should try to reduce your nightly dietary intake in favour of having a good and healthy breakfast.For the rest of the day try to eat foods with a low glycemic index (GI). Preferably choose those carbohydrate rich foods which have a lower glycemic index. After 5pm and with your evening meal, try to limit the amount of carbohydrates in your food to allow for most of the glucose reserves in the body (blood, liver, and muscles) to be used up and/or lowered, and so force the body to switch

to using your fat reserves while you are sleeping. However, avoid any long-term diets completely excluding carbohydrates, as they are still of highest importance because they contain a lot of vitamins and minerals that the body needs, and are also the best nutrients for the body for when performing exercise (especially high-intensity). Carbohydrate rich foods include: bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, couscous, cereal, oats, etc. Choose those with a lower glycemic index.Try to eat 25 to 30 per cent of your calories

Remember to only have a light snack in the evening with a low glycemic index, preferably not containing a lot of carbohydrates.Remember to have five portions of fruit and vegetables per day. They not only contain a lot of the vitamins and minerals that your body needs to stay healthy but also contain a lot of dietary fibre which will help to bulk up in your stomach making you unconsciously eat less of the higher energy foods. Vegetables are especially good for this purpose as most of them are very low on calories (exceptions include avocado, sweet corn, and peas which although are still healthy, should be consumed in smaller quantities. To lead a healthy lifestyle you also have to remember that physical exercise is vital at all ages. The type and length of time practiced can vary according to our age and our capability but is, nevertheless, of great importance to our well being. A minimum of one hour of moderate activity three times a week will help maintain our heart and circulatory system in shape, help

keep cholesterol levels down, keep bone density up, keep muscles strong, and help us gain and maintain flexibility. Exercise has also been demonstrated to have a range of other health benefits such as helping to control existing, or lower the risk for, type 2 diabetes, lowering the risk of certain cancers, and helping to prevent other problems such as sciatica, arthritis, and depression, among others. For weight control and weight loss, exercise is also a key factor. Not only does exercising help you burn a lot of calories, but working out also helps us to increase our muscle mass. This in turn will result in a higher basal metabolic rate (how many calories the body burns at rest). Thus keeping our bodies physically trained with a good muscle mass percentage even helps us keep weight off while we sleep!!!

You are reading January’s issue and like every year in January, a lot of people would like to lose some weight to get in shape and keep their New Year’s resolutions. My advice is that if you want to get in shape for summer you need to start right now. You did not gain your extra weight in the three weeks over Christmas, so equally you are not going to get rid of it in a short time either. An average body transformation lasts 12 to 16 weeks, depending on the individual.

In other words, your body does transform as it has to adapt to a new stimuli. Examples include body building, intense cardio and intense machine workouts, in fact any workout where you are able to force your body to a limit and beyond to result in a change or morph.The following workout plan is divided into two different levels of difficulty. If you are a beginner, try exercises marked with an A. Intermediates and experienced people can try B. Imagine a scale of intensity which goes from 1 to 10. 1 is very easy and 10 is very hard. Try to achieve a 7 if you are a beginner. If you have some experience, go for an 8 or 9. That helps you find the right weights for your workouts.

Bfit’s circuit of sinIf weight loss is your goal or the exercises are not hard enough, try the following: do the whole as a circuit without breaks. That means you do one set of 1b, then switch to 2b and so on. In between the exercises you have no break. When you have finished the 7th exercise, take a two minute break then repeat the circuit twice. This is called the ‘Bfit’s circuit of sin’. This charming and intimate restaurant takes its name from its owner and chef, Alain Mills who came to Tenerife 23 years ago. le Bistrot d’Alain has been open for the last 21 years and established itself early on as a firm favourite of those seeking a really special meal. Prior to coming to the island, Alain studied at a catering school and then went on to own his own restaurant in Paris, at Thonos les Bains for eight years.

He always works alone in his relatively compact but well equipped kitchen. It is hard to believe that this one man can produce such exquisite and beautifully presented food to satisfy a restaurant with all tables occupied, without any of the diners suffering a long wait between each mouthwatering course. The timing always

seems to be just right. He is without doubt a maestro who goes about his work in a steady manner, never appearing to be stressed by the two waiting staff who eagerly wait to serve their customers.The main menu includes, as you would expect in a French restaurant, such specialities as Frogs’ Legs á la Provencale, as well as Salmon and Sea Bream Carpaccio, Fish Soup and Rouille Sauce, Warm Salmon Salad with Herbs, patés and much more, and that’s just for starters.For main course there are several fish dishes including Fillets of Bream with Endive Fondue, Fillets of Sole Bistrot, Prawn and Salmon Stew with Small Vegetables and Escalopes of Salmon in Beurre Nantais. from the specials board, and we began with Revuelta de Salmon with Sopito de Verduras and followed this with Aguacate con Gambas which was prepared in a similar way to guacamole and topped with cress. We continued with a delicious hot melt-in-the-mouth Foie Gras served with an apple and honey sauce. Our next course, which had the most wonderful aroma, was King Prawns in American Sauce.For main course we had Solomillo de Buey with Mushrooms, served with fresh broccoli,

cauliflower and gratinated potatoes which were seasoned with nutmeg.The desserts menu is also in the form of a board, and we chose what must be a chocoholic’s delight – Fondant de Chocolate (a chocolate sponge which contains a thick chocolate sauce) with fresh strawberries and Crema Inglésa which is like a real homemade custard.Of course, there is a wide selection of wines to accompany your meal.There are insufficient words to describe the food at this delightful French eaterie where the service is excellent. Mouthwatering, melt in the mouth, flavoursome, delicate, a sensual culinary experience – these are the expressions which come to mind. Suffice to say that every course is to be savoured, to the very last crumb, in terms of appearance, aroma and taste.This is the restaurant to choose if you are seeking a gourmet experience. A pink tide of around 1,500 people walked and swam around four kilometres in the south of the island to help raise funds and spread a message of hope for breast cancer victims and their families.

The walk brought in over €13,600 on the day, a record for the event so far, and more funds were expected to arrive over the following few weeks. Katy Kennedy and Carlos did a superb job of keeping the ball rolling and presenting the acts as joint compéres and a huge group of volunteers gave their time to ensure the occasion was a success. Congratulations and many thanks to all those who donated, helped and walked or swam.

The project ‘25 Bioclimatic homes for the Island of Tenerife’, the only one of its type in the world, began with an international contest organised by the Cabildo of Tenerife and ITEr (the Instituto Tecnológico y de Energías renovables), endorsed by the International Architects union. Its objective was to create a ‘laboratory’ of family-size detached homes developed under the criteria of bioclimatic architecture and adapted to environmental conditions. Some 400 projects were submitted by architects from 38 countries, and the winning house called la geria, a project by César ruiz-larrea, was inspired by a type of agricultural construction used in lanzarote to protect crops.

This bioclimatic development, the first with zero carbon dioxide emissions, is located on land owned by ITER in Granadilla in the south of Tenerife, near the coast and alongside a dry barranco. The houses are constructed with the planet in mind, taking advantage of the local climate and using natural, recycled and recyclable materials, blending in with the landscape. Reducing the use of energy and water, and using renewable energy and treatment plants to supply the home’s needs, is extremely important for an island such as Tenerife where many areas are isolated.Self-sufficient from the energy point of view, using photovoltaic panels to generate power and heat water, the homes are constantly monitored. They are studied in terms of the

bioclimatic techniques used, and to determine which are the most efficient. The project also aims to raise awareness of these techniques and the integration of renewable energy through architecture, amongst specialists and the general public.The results obtained in this ‘laboratory’ of homes allow design models to be created for hot climates, in turn facilitating the replication of the techniques used. This means that future sustainable construction projects could use a proven tool which is easy to use and suitable for export to areas with a similar climate to Tenerife.The construction area was chosen for its climatic conditions: almost constant north-east winds, isolation, scarcity of rainfall and hence its aridity. It is also close to the sea, hence the possibility of sea water desalination using renewable energy.To the visitor, at first sight the development resembles any low level residential development, set in beautiful natural surroundings with mountain and sea views. On closer inspection, the visitor would notice

the ingenious external designs. We visited the house called La Geria, the winning project. Much wood and natural stone has been used in its construction, it is spacious, with a comfortable temperature, light, bright and airy with modern furniture and equipment. It contains everything you would need to stay there and can sleep six people. But most of all, it exudes an immediate feeling of utter tranquillity.Reducing heat and making the most of solar energy is the main objective of these houses, and this is achieved by their varying configurations. Some have large south facing areas, some have walls and ceilings which are used for storage, some use areas not even connected to the house for the storage of heat, and others use all three methods. Inside the houses, the electrical equipment all complies with the European Union’s most energy efficient classification. Considerable savings are made on lighting in all the houses, each of which are positioned to take maximum advantage of natural light, and by the use of low consumption

bulbs and lights which switch off automatically when not necessary. Water saving taps and cisterns are used throughout, together with other innovative water saving devices.Each house has photovoltaic systems for the generation of energy, and all these installations are connected to a common network, thus avoiding the limitations of total independence. The houses also contain sensors and probes which measure the same common parameters (interior temperature, humidity, air flow, carbon dioxide and particles suspended in the air), the results of which are processed and compared, as well as other specific parameters relating to the individual characteristics and the position of each one. These sensors complement the data supplied by meteorological stations, as well as meters which record energy consumption and production, and discriminate between the various sources. All this information is processed and sent to a central computer which compiles the global situation of all of the houses. The true aim is to evaluate the functioning of each house, and to do this, it must be lived in.With the objective of making this experience accessible to scientists, technicians or any other interested group, the houses are available to rent. This practice allows data to be collected which refers to real use, as well as the collection of comments and observations of the guests. As a complementary activity, open days are often organised, with guided tours through the development. The surrounding area is particularly attractive to those who enjoy hiking.The Visitors Centre, constructed by the winner of the contest, César Ruíz Larrea, contains information about the project, the laboratory results obtained, and other areas belonging to ITER.This is a major contribution by Tenerife towards research and development into the implementation of renewable energy into domestic homes, and creating awareness of these techniques. The Sáenz family business has been running for more than 100 years, and began with tobacco. It was agreed in 2006 to sell the tobacco companies , CITA Tabacos de Canarias Sl and its associates, Tabacos Canary Islands SA (Tacisa) and Tabacos la nubia Sl, to the multinational group gallaher. This sale was provoked by the complicated international feelings about tobacco and the consequent fiscal pressures, jointly promising an uncertain future for the group and its employees.

The Zamorano Group invested the proceeds in the expansion of the holding company, both in and outside of Tenerife, and Compañia de Las Islas Occidentales was created, concentrating on the service sector: tourism, security, cleaning, laundry, restaurant services on the island, as well as interests in the property sector. The company also has the water company Fuente Alta which now includes Norwegian brand Isklar.The Gran Hotel Bahía del Duque project began during an economic crisis and was inaugurated in 1993. It was seen by many as the beginning of a higher level of tourism in Tenerife. Francisco Javier told us that, “at that time there was a gap in the market for a different, luxury product. We thought of more affluent clients,

not traditional hotel business”. He told us that the brilliant architect and family friend, Spanish born Andrés Piñeiro, spent two years working on this unrepeatable project. The hotel consists of several buildings whose designs are all based on international architecture of various ages. Many celebrities stay there. Francisco Javier says they include, “TV personalities, top European league footballers, tennis greats such as Nadal and Federer, entrepreneurs, industrialists and politicians, but we don’t divulge who is staying there. during their stay. They come here to relax”.He described the most recent additions to the Gran Hotel Bahía del Duque group which include luxury villas, each with their own pool and services. Francisco Javier commented, “in times of crisis, the luxury market continues to grow”. Also, open for just over two years is the Spa. The hotel is partnered in this venture by international spa industry leader ESPA whose chief executive officer and founder Susan Harmsworth was recently awarded an MBE. This exclusive installation occupies 5,000 square metres, much of which is open-air offering various treatments including talasoterapía, as well as a gymnasium, pilates room and much more. The spa is now open to the public and has a direct access. There, the staff aim to make each experience a personal journey from the moment you step in until the time, feeling transformed, you step back into the outside world.The latest addition is the Asia-Kan restaurant whose menu fuses Japanese, Chinese and Thai

cuisine. Open for two years now, the Moët Gastro Tapas bar was created as a new concept for fresh air, food, designer tapas and drinks accompanied by chillout music in beautiful gardens with a lake. Las Aguas, the superb á la carte restaurant within Las Villas resort, is open to the public too.The group plans to construct a new luxury hotel and golf course designed jointly by the legendary Gary Player and Sir Norman Foster in the Guia de Isora district. Francisco Javier told us, “It is a big project over which we need to think long and hard to get every detail 100 per cent right. It will be near the Abama resort and will be a hotel and residential development designed to a premium level to blend in with the surroundings, and the beach will be as stunning as Abama’s”.Of the crisis, he commented on the flexibility of workers from the north of the island and their ability to travel to work in the south. “Maybe the ring road and the train will help this”. He feels that Costa Adeje and the island as a whole

He says, “we don’t live at the expense of the business. We invest, work hard and grow. We don’t put all our eggs in one basket”. In order to be successful in most endeavours, he believes that we need to work in a different way, look for a speciality, a niche in the market, and at the same time respect the environment and culture. In-house chef, Álvaro Garcés, invited three top chefs to join him in creating special daily menus for discerning diners. Rogelio Quintero, a specialist in reinventing traditional Canarian cuisine prepared a special Canarian menu and Victor Carrecedo created a menu based on a fusion of Asian, South American and Mediterranean influences. Javier

Sánchez gave an on the spot display to the press corps of how to use nitrogen in food preparation, immersing a ladle in the liquid nitrogen at -196ºC before coating it with an orange based sauce to create an instant iced shell for one of his offerings in a menu which demonstrated what can be done with this intriguing technique and the four day food fest closed with the Essence of El Patio from Álvaro Garcés reflecting traditional recipes from all the regions he has graced with his gastronomic skill.

The Hotel Botánico in Puerto de la Cruz possesses one of the most important permanent, primarily Canarian, art collections in existence. There are some 300 works in total and they include masterpieces by César Manrique, Cristino de Vera, Oscar Domínguez, Néstor de la Torre, Facundo Fierro, Bonnin and Pepe Dámaso. Carlos Pinto, the author chosen to draw up the catalogue, included some 100 pieces to appear in the volume which has been published in Spanish, English and German.
