ENOS FAMILY TREE
ENOS FAMILY IN AMERICA
James Enno or Eno, the immigrant to the New World and founder of the
Eno family in America, was baptized 8/21/1625, in London England, at the
Threadneedle Church. The Threadneedle Street Church was a church for
French Protestants or Hugenots who had fled France due to religious
persecutions in the 15th, or 16th and 17th centuries. James was given
the baptismal name of Jacques which is the French name for James. His
father's name was given in the record as Jean Hennot or (John Hennot).
Extracts from documents relating to the Hugenot immigration of the 16th
and 17th Centuries in the British Museum contain the record that Jacque
Hennot left London for North America, which fits perfectly with the
records available for James Enno (or Eno) of Windsor, CT.
In 1648 James Enno purchased a house in Windsor that was occupied by
direct Eno decendents as late as 1859. James married Anna Bidwell, the
widow of Richard Bidwell.
Anna died in 1658 and James married the widow Elizabeth Holcomb in
1658. Elizabeth was the mother of Benajah and grandmother of Abigail
Bissell, both of whom married children of James Enno by his first wife,
Anna. In 1680 James married Hester Eggleston, widow of James Eggleston.
James Eno, Jr. was born to James and Anna Bidwell Egos on 10/20/1651.
He married his step-sister's daughter, Abigail Bissell, on 12/2/1678.
James Eno III was born to James and Abigail Bissell on 9/23/1679. He
married (1) Mary Grant and (2) Hannah Phelps. Benjamin Egos was born to
James and Hannah on 10/5/1719.
In January 1741 Benjamin married Jerusha (Griswold) Pinney, the widow
of Joseph Pinney. Jerusha was born 4/19/1714. Besides her eight Enos
children, Jerusha also had four Pinney children, one of whom, John Pinney
(1736-1816), resided in the Windsor area and three of his children,
Salome, Erastus, and Nathaniel, married into the Eno family.
James Enos was born to Benjamin and Jerusha Egos in Windsor, CT on
6/17/1743. On 10/18/1764 he married Silence Sessions in Union, CT.
Erasmus Enos was the first born of eight children of James and
Silence Enos. He was born in Union, CT 4/8/1765. He married Anna
Griswold 3/18/1784. They had one child recorded in Windsor after which
they moved to New York State. He appears on the 1800 Census of
Bloomfield, Ontario County, NY. In 1804, Erasmus moved to Lewiston,
Niagara County, NY and he purchased land in that township that year. An
E. Enos appears on the 1810 Census of Cambria Township, Genesee County,
NY. (Canbria Township in 1810 encompassed all of that land that is now
known as Niagara County, NY.) Erasmus died 12/29/1812 in Buffalo, NY.
Ann survived and was living in 1849, age 83 years in Cattaraugus, NY.
Erasmus and Anna had only one known child and one other child is thought
to be theirs. They likely had other children.
The other child who is thought to be theirs is Nathaniel Enos. This
information is from the book, ENO AND ENOS FAMILY IN AMERICA by Douglas
Richardson, published in 1973. Mr. Richardson has nothing but
circumstantial evidence to cause him to assign Nathaniel to this family.
I would like to prove his theory but I just don't know how to go about
it.
The Earliest information we have been able to find on the Enos family
is that Nathaniel C. Enos was born in the State of New York, probably in
3
1789. He died on May 28, 1871 at age 82 and is buried in the Quaker Hill
Cemetery in Warren County, Pennsylvania.
Nathaniel Enos was a private in Captain McFarland's Company, 22nd
Regt. U.S. Infantry during the war of 1812. He enlisted at Erie, PA. for
five years. He was discharged June 19, 1815 at Pittsfield, on surgeon's
certificate.
He was wounded on May 27, 1813 at Fort George, Upper Canada. He was
hit by a musket or rifle ball in the right hip, fracturing his femur and
partially depriving him of the use of his leg. He was discharged June
19, 1815, at Pittsfield, on surgeon's certificate. At that time he was
awarded a 3/5 disability pension of $4.80 per month. Total disability
was requested on December 9, 1837. A letter with the request stated that
he was a poor man with a large family to support. He stated that he had
moved to Pennsylvania because of the high price of land in New York.
He had dark hair, blue eyes, dark complexion and was five feet five
and one half inches tall.
Warrant #8629 was for 160 acres of bounty land in Fulton County, IL.
In March 2, 1894 Fannie Enos Van Wink, a "personal heir of the estate" of
Cottonwood, Idaho wrote to the land office concerning said grant. She
could not find the deed or locate the land. I do not know how Fannie was
related to Nathaniel as this letter is only record of her existence that
I have found. Nathaniel died interstate and according to probate records
Mary Jones, Ann Morrison and Abram Enos survived.
Sarah, the wife of Nathaniel Enos, was born in Canada, probably in
1800. She died in 1867 at age 67 and is buried in the Quaker Hill
Cemetery in Warren County, Pennsylvania.
In 1834 Nathaniel and Sarah Enos bought ninety four acres on Quaker
Hill from Thomas and Elizabeth Pound. According to a history of Russell
written in 1916, they had five sons in the Civil War.
1. Abram Enos:(B) 7/10/1834
2. Nathaniel Enos
3. John P. Enos
4. Ephriam Enos
5. Petram Enos
The above mentioned Mary Jones and Ann Morrison must have been
daughters of this couple. There were probably other children also, but I
have found no record of them thus far.
[Reproduced in 1974 through the sponsorship of the Warren County
Historical Society. Page 507]
Nathaniel Enos formerly lived in Niagara County, NY, and settled on
the Shuler place in this township (Elk) about 1830 or 1831. He built a
log house and found it convenient to occupy it before he finished his
fireplace. One winter's night a panther leaped onto the roof and peered
through the hole left for the chimney. The tracks were examined by the
neighbors next morning. After a few years Mr. Enos moved to near
Clendennings; of his large family only one son, Abraham, who lives on the
old place, is now in town, the others being scattered or deceased. Mr.
Enos was a man of decided individuality.
ENOS RECORD IN THE CIVIL WAR
John P. Enos was 18 years old at the time of the 1850 Census so he
was probably born in 1832. He married Sibli Casort October 26, 1853 in
the Town of Carroll, Chautauqua County, NY. Their children were John
4
Edward, Silas Francis, Roxanna Matilda.
He enrolled at Waterford, PA on September 5, 1864 and served in
Company G, 211th Regt. of the Pennsylvania Volunteers. In a letter dated
April 22, 1865, C.W. Stone reported that John Enos had been killed in the
capture of Petersburg and Richmond. He died April 1865.
Abram A. Enos was born July 10, 1834 on Quaker Hill in
Warren County. He was married and had a daughter, Sarah Jane who was
known as Jennie. On November 8, 1857 he married Elizabeth (Betsy) Bull
and they had nine children.
He served with Company F, 151st Regt. Vol. Infantry, PA from
September 20, 1862 to July 27, 1863. He enrolled at Busti and served
with the New York Artillery Volunteers; Private in Company D, 13th Regt.
in 1864 - 1865. He was injured at Bull Run and Gettysburg and had
Typhoid fever while he was in the Army.
Nathaniel C. Enos was born in 1838 (at least he was 12 years old at
the time of the 1850 census). He married Carolina Zibble on December 4,
1858. They had a daughter Alice Amanda.
He enrolled as a Private in Company K, 113th Regt. (12th Cavalry) at
Philadelphia, PA on January 16, 1862. He reenlisted at Martinsburg, VA
February 1, 1864. He was killed in action near Hamiltonville, VA on
March 22, 1865.
Ephriam Enos was six years old at the time of the 1850 Census so was
probably born in 1844. He was wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness
and died in Washington, D.C. on May 12, 1864. He was one of the first
soldiers to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery. He is buried in
Section 27, Grave 38 of Arlington National Cemetery. He was a Private in
Company H, 39th Regiment from PA.
Petram Enos is our mystery man. I have not found him on Census
records. In the Warren Observer it was stated that he was never heard
from after the Battle of Gettysburg. [Schenclllk, J.S. (edited by)
History of Warren County Pennsylvania. D. Mason & Company, Publishers.
Syracuse, NY. 1887.] According to family sources and the Thornton
history of Russell cited before, Petram also served during the Civil War.
Richard Enos says he thinks that Petram died at Antietam. Thus far we
have been unable to find any proof of his existence.

Vain Enos' daughter Berdena Roberts found a will of
Nathaniels' written in 1857 in which he stated his son
William James was buried in the family burial ground and
he wanted to be buried there to. In the national
archives we had gotten a letter from Fanny Van Winkle
inquiring about Nathaniels' bounty land as she a
"personal Heir" of Nathaniel. Fanny's granddaughter
lives in Oregon and has worked on her family history, but
could not find any information about her great-
grandfather William Enos who was in Missouri in 1945.
They must be one and the same.

BOY DROWNS AS HE SLIPS INTO SHALLOW POND
LANDER, PA (AP) - An 8 year-old Warren County boy drowned Friday when
he slipped into a shallow pond on a farm near this community, about 10
miles northeast of Warren.
Daniel H. Enos, son of Louis and Diane Enos of Russell RD 1. was
pronounced dead on arrival at a Jamestown, NY Hospital.
State police said the boy was playing on the banks of the pond when
he fell from the bank. His twin brother, David, reportedly attempted to
rescue him but was unsuccessful.

GIRL DEAD, FRIEND FOUND ILL IN ROOM
GAS FUMES BELIEVED TO BE RESPONSIBLE
OLEAN - Jan. 5 - Plans of tow vicinity girls who expected to start
new jobs in this city today resulted tragically when they were found
unconscious this morning in the room they had rented last night, one of
them failing to regain consciousness.
Dead is Virginia Champlin, about nineteen, Richburg, RFD, who failed
33
to respond to inhalator treatment by city firemen, and later, application
of the St. Francis Hospital “iron lung.” Her companion, Dorothy Logue,
Franklinville, is still in critical condition in the sam hospital.
Coroner C.J. Hosmer, who is investigating, said the death of the
Champlin girl was apparently caused by carbon monoxide poisoning. He
said that he will withhold the death certificate, pending change in the
condition of Miss Loguie, in hope that she may be able to supply
additional information.
Patrolman George F. Wilson, who answered the call to the rooming
quarters of Mrs. Louella Voorhees at 319 ½ North Union Street, said that
both girls were found in bed in an unconscious state. The door and
window of the third floor were closed and a gas heater was burning
brightly, temperature in the room being high at the time he entered,
Wilson said.
The landlady told police that the girls engaged the room last night,
telling her that they had new jobs in the city today. She said that she
was asked to awaked them at 8:30 a.m. today. When her knocking failed to
arouse the girls, Mrs. Voorhees entered the room by use if a pass key and
found Miss Champlin unconscious and Miss Logue in a semi-conscious
condition. She summoned police.
Miss Champlin resided near Richburg. She leaves her father, a
sister, and a brother. (Special to the Courier-Express, Tuesday, January

JAMES R. LANANGER
AGE 8, DIES UNDER WHEELS OF LARGE TRACTOR TRAILER
1945-1953
COUDERSPORT - A Millport boy, eight years old was crushed to death
beneath the wheels of a commercial trailer about 10:30 a.m. Monday
morning. The mishap occurred on a bridge in Millport a hundred feet or
so from the child’s home.
The victim was James Richard Lananger, fourth of nine children of Mr.
and Mrs. Charles Lananger. He was a second grade pupil in the Millport
school.
The family had moved to Millport three months ago from Allegany. Mr.
Lananger is employed in Olean. Mrs. Lananger is the former Mary E.
Champlin of Bolivar.
Driver of the truck-trailer was Donald Sick, 40, of 2033 Mill Lane,
Williamsport, PA. The equipment was owned by the Mushroom Trucking
Company of Philadelphia.
Mr. Sick was enroute to Olean on Route 44 when he struck and ran over
the boy on a span over the Oswayo. He was held blameless by Coroner Earl
A. Brown and State Police of Coudersport Barrack. The Coroner returned a
verdict of accidental death.
The truck driver told investigating officers that the child darted
from the left side of the bridge into the path of the heavy vehicle
carrying an eight-ton load. He said he had seen him walking along the
left side of the bridge a minute or two before. As the truck entered the
bridge, the child broke into a run. “Before I knew it he was directly in
front of the truck,” the driver said.
Mr. Sick was traveling about 25 miles per hour. He stopped within 35
or 40 feet, the Coroner and police said.
Death was instantaneous, as far as could be learned. One of the
first to reach the scene was the child’s mother. She said she heard
somebody yell upon the bridge from her home at the north end of the span.
She went up the path leading from the stream to the roadway and saw the
body of her son, she told the deputy Coroner.
The shout she reported hearing was a warning by Mr. Sick to an oil
truck following him. Mr. Sick told the Coroner he had stopped his own
truck and seeing the other vehicle entering the bridge, he feared the
driver hadn’t seen the body and would run over it.
35
The driver of the oil truck was identified as a Roulette man. He
stopped the truck in time to keep from striking the child’s body.
Mr. Lananger, who is employed by the Allied Bitmans of Olean, was
notified of the accident immediately. A relative drove to Olean and got
him.
Shortly before the accident, the victim was playing with Jerry Hyde,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Hyde. The Hydes live near the scene of the
accident on the other side of Route 44. He is believed to have been
going back home when he was killed.
Many of the neighborhood children play on and around the bridge,
Millport residents in the vicinity told Coroner Brown. An unidentified
child narrowly escaped being hit the day before on the bridge, the
Coroner learned last night.
The Lananger boy’s body was removed in a Shinglehouse ambulance and
taken later to Loop Funeral Home, Bolivar, where funeral services will be
held at 2 p.m., Wednesday (July 22, 1953).
Burial will be at Maple Lawn Cemetery, Bolivar.

ARLENE E. BRANSTROM
1898-1947
RITES PLANNED FOR VICTIM OF DROWNING
Services in memory of Mrs. Arlene E. Branstrom, 49, wife of Edwin F.
Branstrom, Russell, who drowned in Conewango creek at the Akeley bridge
some time Wednesday afternoon, will be held from the Russell Methodist
church at two o’clock Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Philip W.
Schlick, of Akeley, and Rev. R.B. Naylor, Jamestown, NY. Interment will
be in Pine Grove cemetery. Friends may call at the Peterson funeral home
at the usual hours until Saturday noon when removal will be made to the
church.
The body of Mrs. Branstrom was discovered floating on the surface of
Conewango creek Wednesday afternoon about 3:30 o’clock by her husband and
son Donald, who had launched a search for her, after she started on a
drive in the latter’s car, earlier in the afternoon. The machine was
parked on the west approach of the Akeley bridge. An eyewitness, Gaylord
Hayward, stated that he had observed the woman shortly after one o’clock,
leave the car, and a few moments later she was over the bank, and he
surmised she was picking berries. Relatives informed officials she had
been in ill health for about a year.
Mrs. Branstrom was born March 11, 1898, at Akeley, daughter of Fred
and Elizabeth Cox Enos. She had been a resident of the community all her
life, and was a member of the Russell Methodist church and the Ladies’
Aid Society. Besides the husband she is survived by the following
children: Robert E., Mary Elizabeth and Walter G., all of Russell, and
Donald F. Branstrom, Ann Arbor, MI. A grandson and one brother, Richard
H. Enos, also survive.

**CHAMPLIN GENEALOGY **
***********************
Compiled on July 17, 2000 by Robert Champlin, 274 Plymouth Trail, Newmarket,
Ontario, Canada L3Y 6G7
1. Jeffrey Champlin [Jeffrey (1)]
Jeffrey Champlin, the immigrant and progenitor of the Champlin name in
America, is believed to have been born at, or near, Bideford (Devonshire)
England circa 1621. While this date is unsubstantiated it is likely to be a
fairly accurate approximation as Jeffrey’s children were born in the 1650's and
he died at Westerly, Rhode Island sometime between 1688 and 1695.
He is believed to have been buried with his son William in the family
cemetery located on William’s farm. This burial ground is known today as the
Westerly Historical Cemetery #03 and/or the Wilcox Lot. The long abandoned
cemetery is located in the midst of a tangled stand of bull briars along the
south side of Shore Road between Westerly and Dunn̓s Corners. On May 5, 1995 I
located this burial ground. There were many small unmarked stones scattered
throughout the all but impenetrable bull briars, which made it impossible to get
near most of them at that time of year. William’s stone, which was made of
shale, was found and a faint inscription was still readable. Other stones bore
even fainter inscriptions and were usually surrounded by several other stones
that appeared to be nothing more than odd shaped rocks jutting out of the
ground.
During the American Revolution, many of the early vital records of Rhode
Island were destroyed by fire. Other records were removed by the British and
sent to New York for safe keeping. The ship that was used to transport these
records sank in New York harbor before its cargo could be unloaded. Eventually,
some of these vital records were recovered but most were no longer readable.
The last known recorded mention of Jeffrey during his lifetime was made in
1688. In 1695, his eldest son (Jeffrey) refers to his father in a document
confirming a deed by saying: “Know all men by these presents that I, Jeffrey
Champlin of Kingstown do own and acknowledqe that my brother William Champlin
and Brother Christopher Champlin have full power to dispose of that house and
hundred akers of land which was my dissesed father’s - - which Lyes in westerle
for acknowledgement hereunto I have set my hand in the yeare 1695, December ye
6th”.
It is not known how Jeffrey came to the New World (or when), but there are
reports that he was in Boston as early as 1627. The first white settlement on
Aquidneck was established in March of 1638 on the north end of that island. The
settlement was called “Pocasset” until 1640 when it was renamed “Portsmouth” -
the name it retains to this day.
Pocasset was founded by Anne Hutchinson and her small group of religious
libertarians. They had met in the Boston home of prominent merchant William
Coddington on March 7, 1638. The members of this small group was greatly at
odds with and frequently harassed by Massachusetts’ ruling Puritans.
Hutchinson’s group called themselves the “Bodie Politick” and drew up a compact
62
in much the same way as did the Mayflower passengers. Their sworn agreement read
as follows:
“We, whose names are underwritten, do here solomly, in the presence of Jehovah,
incorporate ourselves into a Bodie Politick, and as He shall help, will submit
ourselves, lives and estates unto our Lord Jesus Christ, the King of Kings and
Lord of Lords, and to all those perfect and most absolute laws of His given to us
in His Holy Word of truth, “to be guided and judged thereby.”
This compact was signed by Anne & William Hutchinson, William Coddington,
Henry Bull, John Clarke, John Coggeshall, William Aspinwall, William Dyer,
Nicholas Easton, (an illegible name), William Baulstone, John Sanford, Philip
Sherman, John Walker, Samuel Wilbour, Richard Carder and William Freeborn.
Coddington purchased the island of Aquidneck from the Indians and the group
founded Pocasset in April of 1638. The following, taken from the records of that
colony, show that Jeffrey was likely there from the very beginning: “On the 28th
of the 2nd month 1639 Upon the complainte of Jeffrey Champlin in the behalfe of a
debt due to William Cowly and himselfe from Mr. Aspinwall, warrent was granted
forth, for the attachment of his shallopp till both that debt and other actions
of the case be satisfied and discharged by him”. (Note: under the Julian
Calendar in use at the time. the 2nd month was April and 1639 would have been
1638 today).
The Pocasset Colony quickly became a successful agricultural venture but
lacked a deep water port from which to ship excess produce. In addition, a power
struggle between Coddington and Hutchinson, based on religious interpretations
and applications to daily life, developed soon after the settlement began.
Coddington had been a wealthy man in Boston and among the religious leaders there
and had been a member of the Boston Court which had expelled Roger Williams.
Williams described Coddington as a “worldly man” who was more concerned about his
own profit and power. Coddington would later become a Quaker.
Due to the need to have a deep water port and because of religious and
political difference, Coddington and his supporters (John Clarke, Nicholas
Easton, John Coggeshall, William Brenton, Jeremy Clarke, Thomas Hazard, Jeffrey
Champlin, Henry Bull, William Dyer and Robert Jeffries) left Pocasset and
migrated to the southern end of Aquidneck Island, establishing a new colony which
became known as Newport. By the end of the year, 93 people were resident there.
Jeffrey was registered as an inhabitant of Newport on November 24, 1639,
was made a Freeman there on September 14, 1640 and granted 10 acres of land.
That same year, the Pocasset and Newport settlements united upon the libertarian
rules of Pocasset and William Coddington was made the Colony’s first governor.
His name also appears on the roll of Freemen in 1641 and 1655.
At Newport, Jeffrey engaged in the buying and selling of property and was
thought to have become a cordwainer. Cordwainers were leather workers who made
use of cordovan (a soft, colored leather usually made of sheep, goat or dog skin,
or split horse hide) to design and make custom made shoes. This was considered
to be a pre-eminent profession in those days.
In the “Colonial and Land Records” the following account of Jeffrey’s
acquisition of land is given “Whereas, according to certain orders, made for the
Establishing and giving Assurance of the Land, Be it known, Therefore that
Geoffrey Champlin and Richard Sarle, having exhibited their acquaintances, under
the Treasurer̓s hand, of Newport, wherein appears fully satisfaction to be given,
for the number of twenty Acres of Land, Lying within the precincts of such bounds
as the Committee, by Order appointed, did bound it withal, together with ten
acres apiece given and granted to them gratis, by the Towne, for and in
63
consideration of Service done by them, which number, together with the former,
amounting to Forty acres, is thus laid forth. Four acres apiece for homelots,
lying in the Towne, and six acres apiece, lying next to William Cowly’s land and
adjoined upon Thomas Hazard’s land, a highway passing there-through, with half a
Cow’s hay in harbour Marsh lying at the first Entrance, and three acres of Marsh,
lying at Sachnet, next the falls, Mr. Smith’s Marsh, lying on the South East side
thereof, with, another parcel of Sixteen acres, more less, lying....” (remainder
of entry missing - possibly burned).
Soon after the granting of this land in 1640, Jeffrey bought out the portions
belonging to Richard Searle and William Cowley and sold both to Henry Bull:
“Memorandum that Geoffrey Champlin of Newport, having bought and purchased of Wm
Cowley and Richard Sarle their pts and ptions of land in that feeld that lay
between ye Land granted to Thomas Hazard and Edward Robinson at ye South end of
ye Towne, and ye sd Geoffrey had made over and soald unto Henry Bull of ye saide
Towne, for a valowabie consideration given and received, whereon ye sd Geoffrey
doth disclaime all interest in ye sd Land and doth acknowledge full propriety to
belong to Henry Bull, his heires, executors, administrators and assignee to ye
world’s end”. This transfer took place late in 1644.
Jeffrey purchased twenty acres located on the east side of Robert Griffin’s
property from Adam Mott, Sr. in 1646. He sold ten acres “adjoining his house
lot” (Newport) to William Brenton of Boston in 1657. He was a witness to the
sale of some property by Roger Williams to Richard Smith:

Jeffere Champlain John Roome William Holmes
While in Newport, Jeffrey married. Again, the destruction of vital records
has prevented us from knowing the date of this union or the certain identity of
his wife - although it is believed that her name was Eulalia Vladi Garde,
daughter of John Garde and Rebecca Copp. She was baptized on February 5, 1632
(or 1623, depending on source) at Bideford, England and died sometime around 1656
or 1657 as references to her dowry cease as of this time in Jeffrey’s various
legal documents. It is believed by some (notably, Champlin genealogist William
J. Hunter of Ottawa, Ontario) that Jeffrey may even have been married twice and
that the marriage to Eulalia was Jeffrey’s second.
According to Hunter, Jeffrey would have had to have served as an apprentice
shoemaker in England before coming to the New World as there were no shoemakers
among the early Rhode Island settlers for him to apprentice under. He probably
married his first wife in England as there is no mention of his marrying in Rhode
Island, and the laws being what they were, he would not have been granted as
large an amount of land in Newport in 1640 as he did if he wasn’t already
64
married. His home lot occupied the block along the south side of Mary Street,
from Spring Street west to Water Street and south to the waterfront.
Whoever she was, Jeffrey̓s first wife must have died prior to 1650 as she
would have been rather old (for that era) and married too long to suddenly start
bearing children in the 1650's. Thus, Jeffrey probably married for a second time
around 1649-1650 with his second wife (presumably Eulalia) being the mother of
his three sons. Both wives may have been members of the Garde family. This
certainly was true of Jeffrey̓s brother, William Champlin. William, who never
came to the New World, married sisters Rebecca (in 1641) and Mary Garde -
daughters of Roger Garde of Bideford.
John Garde (son of Roger) migrated from Bideford to Fayal (Azores) and then
to Rhode Island by 1638. He and Jeffrey owned land in the Pocasset area and when
John Garde (1604—1665) and his wife Rebecca “Harte” Copp (born 1605) died, they
were buried on Jeffrey’s farm at Newport. Many years later, their bodies were
removed and interred in the Newport City Cemetery by Jeffrey’s youngest son,
Christopher. John and Harte (-?-) Garde had a daughter, Charlotte, born in 1626.
She may have been the second wife of Jeffrey Champlin. It should be pointed out
that the name “Eulalia” is of Portuguese origin.
Jeffrey had three known children, all born at Newport:
03. Jeffrey (1650)
05. William (1654)
07. Christopher (1656)
In 1661, Jeffrey migrated to the region of Misquamicut along the Pawcatuck
River (in the western part of what is modern day Rhode Island) with another group
of dissatisfied settlers comprising 24 other families. There, they founded the
town of Westerly - Jeffrey signing a document which purchased Misquarnicut from
Chief Socoa in 1661. About 75 people signed this document but only a few
actually removed to what was to become Westerly. He took the oath of allegiance
to Rhode Island on May 17, 1671 and three days later he was fined 20 shillings
for refusing jury duty.
Jeffrey was elected to the Westerly Town Council in 1680 and was Moderator
of the Westerly Town Meetings from 1680-1684. He was Deputy in the Rhode Island
Assembly from 1681-1686. In 1685, Jeffrey was assigned to survey highways.
By 1669, Jeffrey had sold all of his properties in Newport -the last
seeming to be a 40 acre tract (which included his home lot and dwelling) that was
purchased by Walter Clarke. In the deed of transfer, Jeffrey was called a
shoemaker.
In 1675-76, during King Phillip’s War, Jeffrey sought refuge in Newport,
returning to Westerly after the defeat of the Pequots in 1677.
Note: While commonly referred to as “Rhode Island” the actual name of the
smallest of the 50 states is: RHODE ISLAND AND THE PROVIDENCE PLANTATIONS. It is
comprised, for the most part, of an inverted horseshoe shaped mainland in the
middle of which lies a large island known as Rhode Island. Aquidneck was the
original name for RHODE ISLAND (the island) and the PROVIDENCE PLANTATIONS
referred to those mainland colonies or “plantations” which were founded by Roger
Williams (Providence), Samuel Gorton (Shawumet) and William Arnold (Pawtucket).
Many people contend that Jeffrey Champlin was a descendent of the French
explorer Samuel de Champlain. The only relationship between the two is the
similarity in the spellings of their respective surnames. Samuel de Champlain’s
original surname was Complain - not Champlain. He was the son of Anthonie de
65
Complair and Marguerite LeRoy. To make matters worse for those who claim him as
an ancestor, Samuel had no children! In 1610, Samuel married Helene Boulle who
was 31 years his junior. Born at Paris, France in 1598 Helene was only 12 years
old when she and Samuel married. Marriages to 12 year old girls were legal at
that time, but actual co-habitation was not permitted for another two years.
Samuel and Helene probably never consummated their marriage as he sailed for
Quebec shortly after the marriage and founded the settlement of Place Royal
(Montreal) in 1611. In 1620, Helene also sailed for Quebec and resided with her
brother at Tadousac (located on the north west bank of the meeting place of the
St. Lawrence and Saquenay Rivers) for four years. She then returned to France,
became a nun and eventually founded an order of nuns.
492. ANNE (MARBURY) HUTCHINSON
Anne Marbury, daughter of Reverend Francis Marbury and Bridget Dryden, was
born at Alford, Lincolnshire, England and baptized there on July 20, 1591. She
was murdered by a band of Indians in the summer of 1643 at Pelham Bay (Long
Island) New York.
Francis Marbury was known for his Puritan leanings and more than once
received the censure of the Established Church. Bridget Dryden was his second
wife and the daughter of John Dryden of Canon’s Ashby in Northamptonshire. In
1605 the family moved to London. Anne was exposed from birth to religious
discussions of the time and no doubt absorbed many of her father’s liberal
beliefs.
On August 9, 1612 Anne married Thomas Hutchinson, son of a wealthy
merchant, and went to his home in Alford to live. There she spent the next 22
years and bore her husband 14 children. In 1633 their eldest child, Edward,
emigrated to Massachusetts Bay with John Cotton, previously vicar of St.
Botolph’s in old Boston, whose preaching had inclined Anne Hutchinson to attend
his church. The following year, with her husband and family, she emigrated to
Massachusetts on the Griffin, arriving in September. In the new colony she won
respect for her vigorous intellect and was loved for her kindliness. She was a
thorough student of the Bible and soon her restless and inquiring mind led her to
take a strong part in the religious life of the colony. At first she held
informal meetings of women in her home and would discuss the sermons of the
previous Sunday. She then ventured to expound her own religious beliefs and
advocated the preaching of a “covenant of grace” - a religion based upon the
individual’s direct intuition of God’s own doctrine soon stirred the colony to
its foundations. She was labeled an antinomian by her opponents and was accused
of advocating a religion which absolved its adherents from obedience to moral
law.
At first the Reverend John Cotton agreed with her views as did her brother-in-
law, the Reverend John Wheelwright and Reverend Henry Vane, but in time her
support diminished. Early in August 1637 Vane sailed for England. Shortly
afterward a synod of the churches was called in which her views were denounced.
Cotton acquiesced to the pronouncements of the synod, leaving Wheelwriqht her
strongest ally. In the following session of the General Court Wheelwright was
banished and Anne Hutchinson was summoned to trial “for traducing the ministers
and their ministry.”
After the proceedings, which were a legal travesty, she was sentenced to
banishment. When asked on what grounds, the governor, John Winthrop replied:
“Say no more. The Court knows wherefore and is satisfied.” Sentence of
banishment was stayed - it was then winter and her health was delicate - and Anne
was committed to the charge of Joseph Weld of Roxbury, the marshal. She was
later placed in the home of John Cotton in Boston, where Cotton and the Reverend
66
John Davenport attempted to convince her of her errors.
Twice brought before the church at Boston, she was at length induced to
recant in public, but when she finally admitted that her ludgement remained
unaltered, she was accused of lying and was formally excommunicated. In casting
her out of the church John Wilson delivered her up to Satan and ordered her “as a
leper” to withdraw herself from the congregation.
Thus, in the early spring of 1638 she emigrated with her family to the
wilds of Rhode Island where she and her small band of religious libertarians
founded the first white colony on Aquidneck Island. They had met in the Boston
home of prominent merchant William Coddington on March 7, 1638. This small group
were greatly at odds with and frequently harassed by Massachusetts’ ruling
Puritans. Hutchinson’s group calling themselves the “Bodie Politick”, drew up a
compact in much the same way as did the Mayflower passengers. Their sworn
agreement read as follows:
“We, whose names are underwritten, do here solomly, in the presence of
Jehovah, incorporate ourselves into a Bodie Politick, and as He shall help, will
submit ourselves, lives and estates unto our Lord Jesus Christ, the King of Kings
and Lord of Lords, and to all those perfect and most absolute laws of His given
to us in His Holy Word of truth, to be guided and judged thereby”.
This compact was signed by: Anne & William Hutchinson, William Coddington,
Henry Bull, John Clarke, John Coggeshall, William Aspinwall, William Dyer,
Nicholas Easton, (an illegible name), William Baulstone, John Sanford, Philip
Sherman, John Walker, Samuel Wilbour, Richard Carder and William Freeborn.
Coddington purchased the island of Aquidneck (“Peaceable island”) from
Miantonomah and Canonicus, two Sachems of the Narragansetts for 40 fathoms of
white beads, 10 coats and 20 hoes. The group, which included Anne, her husband,
their 13 children and 60 other people, founded the town of Pocasset in Apr11 of
1638. The modern day name of “Portsmouth” was given the settlement a year Later.
In 1642 William Hutchinson died and Anne removed with some of her family to
Long Island, later establishing a home on the mainland, on the shore of Pelham
Bay. Here, in August or September of 1643, she and all but one of her household
were murdered by a group of Mohegans. Her youngest daughter, Susannah, who was
born in 1633, was carried off by these murderers and later ransomed by the Dutch.
Susannah Hutchinson eventually married John Cole at Boston in 1651. They were
the grandparents of Susannah Cole Eldred - first wife of Jeffrey Champlin’s
grandson, Jeffrey Champlin III.
1696: - elected Justice of the Peace serving until 1713
1699: - one of six men (three from each colony) appointed to draw up
the Connecticut - Rhode Island boundary line
1703: - his home was designated as a recruiting station at the Council
of War held at Kingstown
1709: - At a Town Meeting held on April 7th, William was “voted to have
the grant of 100 acres” of land and was empowered to agree with
Ninecraft, sachem, for “a perpetual high road to the salt water
from Queen’s Rhoade”.
In 1674, William married Mary Babcock. Mary, daughter of James and Sarah
(-?—) Babcock, was born at Portsmouth, Rhode Island c/l648-l655 and died at
Westerly in the spring of 1747 leaving an estate worth 508.13 pounds. There are
references in the literature that she was William’s second wife but this is
unsubstantiated and the name of his alleged first wife is unknown.
William and Mary had three children, all born at Westerly:
200. Mary (1675)
67
157. William (l677) Newport, RI (D) 1746 Westerly, RI
201. Ann (1678)
James Babcock was born in 1612, probably in Essex County, England, and died
on June 12, 1679. He married (1st) Sarah (-?-) who died in cl665 and (2nd)
E1izabeth (—?—) in 1669. He was admitted an inhabitant of Portsmouth, Rhode
Island on February 25, 1642 and removed to Westerly in March of 1662.
On July 6, 1682 William Champlin of Westerly sold the sloop “Tryall” to
James Robertson of the Barbadoes. The “Tryall” was built by John Lewis of New
London, shipwright, and weighed 18-19 tons.
157. WILLIAM CHAMPLIN [Jeffrey (1), William (2—3))
Wi11iam Champlin, son of William Champlin and Mary Babcock, was born at
Newport, Rhode Island in 1677 and died at Westerly, Rhode Island in 1746.
He was made a “freeman” of Westerly in 1700 and on June 25, 1707 was chosen
“Rattemaker” (tax assessor). A large land owner who became wealthy through the
buying and selling of various properties, William represented Westerly in the
Rhode Island General Assembly in 1728, 1731 and 1732. He was appointed Justice
of the Peace in May 1741 and again in May 1742.
On January 18, 1700, William was married to Mary Clarke of Westerly in a
ceremony conducted by her father Justice Clarke. Mary, daughter of Joseph Clarke
and Bethiah Hubbard, was born at Westerly on December 27, 1680 and died in 1760.
On her mother’s side Mary was the granddaughter of Samuel Hubbard and Tacy Cooper
who were the founders of the Seventh Day Baptist Church in America. Mary’s
brother, Samuel Clarke, married both Ann Champlin and Susannah (Long) Champlin.
Ann Champlin was William’s sister and Susannah (Long) Champlin was the widow of
Jeffrey Champlin [Jeffrey (1—2—3)].
Mary (Clarke) Champlin was baptized, and under laying on of hands was
admitted into the Seventh Day Baptist Church on May 10, 1708.
William’s Will, dated August 3, 1746 indicates that he gave several large
tracts of land to his children prior to his death. He left nearly 3,000 pounds
cash, various household articles, several farm animals, a Negro girl valued at
150 pounds and a 12 year old Indian girl valued at 40 pounds.
William and Mary (Clarke) Champlin had 7 children:
159. William (1702)
193. Jeffrey (1704)
195. Joseph (1706)
194. Samuel (1708)
196. Joshua (17l0) Wed: Bridget Thomson
186. James (1712)
198. Susannah (1714)
Joseph Clarke (Mary’s father) was born on April 2, 1643 (a disputed date)
and died on January 11, 1827 - aged 83 years, 11 months. He was the son of
Joseph and Margaret (-?-) Clarke. Joseph Clarke Sr. was born on December 9, 1618
and died June 1, 1694. He was a member of the Rhode Island General Assembly and
the son of Thomas Clarke and Rose Herrige. In his Will (dated October 5, 1725
and proved at Westerly on February 27, 1727) Joseph left daughter Mary a bed,
bedding and 5 pounds.
Bethiah Hubbard, daughter of Samuel Hubbard and Tacy Cooper was born at
Springfield, Massachusetts on December 19, 1646 and died at Westerly, Rhode
Island on April 17, 1707. She married Joseph Clarke on November 16, 1664 at
68
Westerly. He was born a Newport, Rhode Island on February 11, 1642. After
Bethiah’s death, Joseph Clarke Jr. married (2nd) Hannah (Weeden) (Clarke)
Peckham (1655-1723). Joseph was Hannah Weeden’s third husband. She had been
married (1st) to Joseph’s brother, William Clarke (1647-1683) and (2nd) to Thomas
Peckham (1646-1709).
Samuel Hubbard (1610-1689) was born at Mendlesham, England, the youngest
son of James Hubbard and Naomi Cocke, and the grandson of Thomas Hubbard. He
arrived at Salem, Massachusetts in October of 1633 - probably on board the
“JAMES” which left England in August and arrived at Massachusetts Bay on October
10th.
Tacy Cooper (1608-1691) was born in England and was recorded as being at
Dorchester, Massachusetts on June 9, 1634 but had removed to Windsor, Connecticut
before 1636 as she and Samuel Hubbard were married there on January 4, 1636.
Samuel Hubbard said of himself: “I was born of good parents my mother
brought me up in the fear of the Lord, in Mendlesham, in catechising me and
hearing choice ministers,”...“I have a testament of my grandfather Cocke’s,
printed in 1549, which he hid in his bedstraw, lest it should be found and burned
in Queen Mary’s days.” By 1634 Samuel had left Salem for Watertown,
Massachusetts, where in 1635 he joined the church “by giving account of my
faith.” He was at Windsor, Connecticut in 1635 and then Wethersfield by 1636 or
1637. On May 10, 1639 he went to Springfield where he soon became one of the
founders of a church, consisting of five men, and “my wife soon after added”.
From there he went to Fairfield Connecticut where on May 10, 1647 his religious
fervor created difficulties for hire. He wrote: “God, having enlightened both,
but mostly my wife, into his holy ordinances of baptizing only of visible
believers, and being very zealous for it, she was mostly struck at and answered
two terms publicly, where I was also said to be as bad as she, and sore
threatened with imprisonment to Hartford Jail, if not to renounce it, or to
remove; that scripture came into our mouths, if they persecute you in one place,
flee to another, and so we did, 2nd day of October, 1648, we went for Rhode
Island and arrived there the 12th day. I and my wife, upon our manifestation of
our faith, were baptised by brother Josephe Clarke 3rd day of November, 1648.”
On August 7, 1651 he was sent to visit some brethren who had been
imprisoned at Boston, and in 1657 he went with John Holmes on a preaching tour on
Long Island. In 1655, he was made freeman, and in 1664, on account of the
disability of Lawrence Turner, Hubbard was to be General Solicitor. On March 10,
1665, he wrote in his diary: “my wife took up keeping of the Lord’s holy seventh
day Sabbath,” and in April 1665: “I took it up...” Later: “Bethiah Feb 1666, and
our son Joseph Clarke, 23 Feb 1666.” On April 7, 1668 he went to Boston to hold a
public dispute with members of the church there, and in July 1668, he wrote from
Boston to his cousin, John Smith, of London, England: “Through God’s great mercy,
the Lord has given to me in this wilderness, a good, diligent, careful, painful
and very loving wife: we, through mercy, live comfortabl praised be God, as co-
heirs together of one mind in the Lord, travellinq through this wilderness, to
our heavenly son, knowing we are pilgrims, as our fathers were, and in good
portion being content therewith. A good house, as with us judged, 25 acres of
ground fenced, and four cows which give, one young heifer and three calves and a
very good mare, a trade, a carpenter, and health to follow it, and my wife, very
diligent and painful, praised be God.”
There were differences between the observers of the “Seventh Day Sabbath”
and the other members of the church and of a discussion of the subject in which
he had participated, Hubbard wrote to his children at Westerly on December 16,
1672, that “it was a tumult.” A few days later on the 23rd of December, with his
wife and one dauqhter, and four other people, he formed the First Seventh Day
Baptist Church in America.

196. JOSHUA CHAMPLIN
[Jeffrey (1), William (2—3), Joshua (4)]
Joshua Champlin, son of William Champlin and Mary Clarke, was born in 1710
at Westerly, Rhode Island and died at Beekman, New York c1790.
He was the first Champlin to settle in New York State, having migrated from
Westerly to Beekman (Dutchess County) in the 1730's, having been recorded as a
witness there in 1737. He returned to Rhode Island around 1742 and was appointed
to a committee which was to supervise repairs made to the Pawcatuck River Bridge
which connects Westerly and Connecticut.
Joshua married Bridget Thompson on June 21, 1730 in a ceremony conducted by
Reverend Ebenezer Rosseter in the First Congregational Church at Stonington,
Connecticut. His brothers, Samuel and William married her sisters Prudence and
Sarah. Bridget, daughter of Captain Isaac Thompson (1671-1738) and Mary Holmes
(1676-1751), was baptized in Stonington’s 1st Congregational Church on June 21,
1713 (the Thompson Nexus says she was born on October 14, 1711) and died sometime
after 1790.
Joshua and Bridget had 10 children (wed 6/21/1730):
1343. Delight (1731) (D) 1755
591. Joshua (1731)
1593. Bridget (1732)
1594. William (1734)
1595. Elisha (1736)
562. Thomas (1738)
8311. Patience ( ) (D) 1755
1596. Delight (1755) (D) 3/13/1840 Bath, NY
577 James Rogers(1758)
1597. Ann (1760)
Joshua had two daughters named Delight. The first married Amariah Stanton,
had three children and had died by 1755 when the second Delight was born.
On August 30, 1747, Joshua witnessed the declaring of Peter Simson’s Will
which was later Proved before Bartholomew Cromwell, Esq. on November 2, 1747. In
that Will, Joshua’s name was spelled “Choplin”.
He was taxed at Beekman from 1747-1778 with a 2 pound assessment from 1753-
1767 and at a 1 pound assessment thereafter. He lived on a leased 200 acre farm
by 1752 in Lot 7 (on the line of lots 7 and 8). The lease was in the name of
Joshua, his wife Bridget and their son William. Colonel James Vanderburgh
purchased this land from Henry Van Rensselaer on April 27, 1769.
Joshua was a member of Hopkinton (Rhode Island) Sabbatarian Church before
1750 and continued as a member until 1768. His wife was a member from before
1740 and remained so until 1768.
In May 1742, Joshua was made a Captain in the Third Regiment of King’s
County Militia, serving under Major Christopher Champlin [Jeffrey (I),
Christopher (2-3-4)]. In May of 1743, he was made Captain of the First Westerly
Company of King’s County Militia. On June 3, 1745, Joshua was commissioned as a
Captain in General Pepperell’s Third Company. Pepperell’s army was raised for
the invasion of French Canada by the British Joshua and his brother, Jeffrey (who
was a 2nd Lieutenant under him) arrived at the fortress of Louisbourg (Cape
Breton) aboard the Brig “SUCCESS” on July 16, 1745 - too late for the battle.
While anchored in the harbor there, an epidemic broke out among the troops on
board and many died - including Jeffrey.
70
Joshua returned to Beekman in 1746 and continued his military career there.
He was made a 1st Lieutenant on July 11, 1755 in Colonel Cockcroft’s Regiment of
Infantry which was raised in Poughkeepsie. On August 21, 1755 he was promoted to
Captain. In this capacity he participated in the Lake George Campaign of the
French and Indian War. There was a Private Thomas Champlin in this unit who must
have been Joshua’s son.
Matthew DuBois sued Joshua for l2pds/9sh/1d worth of unpaid “divers goods,
wares & merchandise” purchased on November 28, 1752.
In July 1755, Joshua and three of his sons (Joshua, Elisha and William)
were among the signers of the “Articles of Association.” Every male resident
(aged 16-60) was expected to sign this pledge, which was required by the
Provincial Congress and the County Committee For Safety. Only about 2/3's of the
men in Beekman did so and it became an early source of conflict between Loyalist
and Patriot factions there.
The pledge read as follows:
“Persuaded that the Salvation of the Rights and Liberties of America,
depends, under God, on the firm Union of its inhabitants in a vigorous
Prosecution of the Measures necessary for its Safety; and convinced of the
necessity of preventing the Anarchy and Confusion, which attend the Dissolution
of the Powers of Government. We, the Freemen, Freeholders, and Inhabitants of
the County of Dutchess, being greatly alarmed at the Avowed Design of the
Ministry to raise a Revenue in America; and shocked by the bloody scene now
acting out in the Massachusetts Bay, Do, in the most solemn Manner resolve, never
to become slaves; and do associate under all the Tie of Religion, Honor, and Love
to our Country, to adopt and to endeavor to carry into Execution, whatever
Measures may be recommended by the Continental Congress; or resolved upon by our
Provincial Convention, for the purpose of preserving our Constitution, and
opposing the Execution of the several arbitrary and oppressive Acts of the
British Parliament; until a Reconciliation between Great-Britain and America, on
Constitutional Principles (Which we most ardently Desire) can be obtained; And
that we will, in All things follow the Advice of our General Committee,
respecting the Purposes aforesaid, the Preservation of Peace and good order, and
the Safety of Individuals, and private Property.”
Joshua was a “fence viewer” in Beekman in 1754 and a Constable there in
1756 and 1757. The records of the Court of General Sessions held May 17, 1757 on
the case of the King vs Joshua Champlin include the following statement “The
Grand Jury presented an indictment for breach and neglect of duty as a constable.
On motion of Mr. Crannel....that he be suspended from he said office of
constable. And that Arie B. DeLong be sworn as constable in said Champlin’s
place for the remainder of the ensuing year.”
In 1758, Joshua was again appointed Constable and served as such in 1760
and 1763—1769. In October 1769, it was “Ordered that Joshua Champlin, one of the
Constables of Beekman’s Precinct forthwith cause the road to be opened over Peter
Velie’s and John Ways farms according as the same is laid out by the
Commissioners and recorded.” He was paid 1 pound/10 shillings at the Town
Supervisor’s meeting of June 1763 for having transported a vagrant. During the
meeting of June 4, 1765, Joshua was awarded 1 pound, 10 shillings for having
transported Barbara Bullis to Souderlains. During the meeting of June 2, 1767
Joshua was awarded 1 pound, 4 shillings for having transported Elizabeth Willis
to New Fairfield.
Joshua took a lease in 1760 of a 111 acre farm on Lot 7, but did not keep
it for long as by 1773 an Adam Stover had settled on it. This farm was located
71
on the Pleasant Ridge Road, just north east of Poughquag village.
He was tax collector in 1761 and monitor at the annual precinct meeting in
1766.
In 1761, Joshua took a lease on a 100 acre farm in lot 6. His son, Joshua
Jr. and Thomas Lee posted a bond for the back rents in 1782. Joshua Jr. paid
two hogs as rent in 1783. Captain Joshua Champlin was referred to as the
boundary on land in lot 6 sold by John Brill Jr. to Zacharias Flagler Sr. on
October 9, 1786.
Joshua maintained an account at the Sleight Store in Beekman between 1767
and 1772 and with “Bennett’s Dau.” He also dealt with Merritt’s Store on Quaker
Hill in 1767 and charged to the account of P. Woodward.
Wife Bridget Champlin was a witness for Abigail Sprague of Beekman whose
Will was dated October 17, 1770.
Joshua was recorded as being a Captain of an unidentified unit on August
18, 1777 and was in command of 112 men. On March 10, 1778 Joshua was appointed
Captain of the Fifth Regiment of Dutchess County Militia. The regiment was under
the command of Colonel Vanden Burgh. He resigned this position on October 20,
1779 and was replaced by Roger Morey of Beekman.
Robert G. Livingston sued Joshua in the October Court of 1781 for back
wheat rents amounting to 220 bushels which he had failed to pay. The rental was
for a “farm and appurtenances” in Beekman which had been rented for a 20 years at
11 bushels per year.

JEFFREY CHAMPLIN
*some references give his name as John Thompson
In the 1790 Census, Joshua and Bridget were enumerated at Beekman. Their
72
household consisted of two males over 16 years of age and three females (no ages
indicated).
577. James Rogers Champlin
[Jeffrey (1), William (2—3), Joshua (4), James Rogers (5)]
James Rogers Champlin, son of Joshua Champlin and Bridget Thompson, was born at
Fishkill, New York on September 14, 1758 and died on March 13/18, 1840 at Bath,
New York.
He received a Pension for his service during the Revolutionary War. On August
17, 1832 his nephew, Thomas Champlin of Cazenovia (Madison County) New York,
testified there to a Justice of the Peace that James enlisted at the age of 15-16
years at Bateman (Dutchess County) New York and first served under Captain
William Clarke, Lt. Benjamin Knox and Lt. Martin Cornwell (all of Bateman). In
November or December, the Company marched to New York City -returning home the
following April While in New York City, James was involved in the construction of
fortifications around the city and on Governors Island. James was discharged but
re-enlisted in time to participate in the Battle of Monmouth (1778).
On October 16, 1832 James (of Bath, New York) appeared in open court, “age 74 and
upwards” to petition for a pension. He stated to the Court that he enlisted in
December 1775 at Bateman, New York and served in Colonel Humphrey’s Regiment. On
October 1, 1776 James re-enlisted in the Militia for three months under Joshua
Champlin - again in Humphrey’s Regiment. They marched to White Plains, New York
where they joined up with General Washington and fought in the Battle of White
Plains that same month. James was discharged in January 1777 at White Plains.
He re-enlisted at Bateman for a five month stint in the spring of 1777 in a
Company under Captain William Clarke. They marched to Poughkeepsie and remained
there for five months “to keep the Tories quiet” after which he was discharged
and returned to Bateman.
James re—enlisted for nine months in a Company commanded by Lt. French and it was
with this unit that he participated in the Battle of Monmouth (New Jersey) in
1778 - during which he was wounded, by grapeshot, in the thigh.
After his final discharge, James continued to live at Bateman for about 20 years
after which he removed to Claverock, New York. He stayed there for 4-5 years
before removing to Locke (Cayuga County) New York. He left Locke for Bath
(Steuben County) New York after 5-6 years.
James married Sarah (Sally) (-?-) c1774 according to their son Josiah. She was
born on March 28, 1763 and died in Steuben County, New York on May 30, 1848.
They had children:
757. Josiah (1792)
758. Allen (1799)
Sally and James resided with their son Josiah at Bath, New York from 1811 until
their deaths. A number of depositions in his pension file refer to James’
“numerous family” but children are listed as heirs in probate records.
On June 3, 1843, James’ widow - Sally Champlin of Bath, New York, applied for a
Revolutionary War Soldier’s Widow Pension. She stated that James was living at
Fishkill, New York when the Revolution began and that James had been in the
Battle of Monmouth, New Jersey and had begun receiving a pension himself on May
9, 1834.
757. JOSIAH CHAMPLIN
[Jeffrey (1), William (2—3), Joshua (4), James (5), Josiah (6)]
73
Josiah Champlin, son of James Champlin and Sally (-?-), was born at Bateman

In the Census of 1830, 1840, and 1850, Josiah was enumerated at Bath (Steuben
County). In the 1850 Census, a person named Eli (age 37) was enumerated in
Josiah’s household. The Census described Eli as “idiotic”.
Josiah married Amarintha Phillip who was born in 1825. According to the marriage
certificate of their daughter, Sally Champlin, Amarintha’s last name was Tobias -
so she may have been married earlier to a man named Phillip. Amarintha was born
in Steuben County in 1822. She was living at Savona (Steuben County) New York on
August 22, 1866 when she gave a deposition confirming the marriage of daughter

Charles (7 months), and Frank Fuller (17) were enumerated together at Wayne.
Frank Fuller was Sarah’s brother.
James and Sarah divorced on April 3, 1884 with James retaining custody of the
children. Sarah then married John Pulver. She died in 1930 at nearby Painted
Post, New York and was buried in the Fairview Cemetery there.
In 1887, James married Mary (Merritt) Ackerman. Mary, daughter of Andrew Merritt
and Mary Jane Guilford, was born in March 1860 and died at Richburg (Allegany

75
All the children (except Lawrence and Francis) died tragically: Mary Ethel and
her husband in a car crash on Francis’ birthday; Florence is not mentioned after
the 1920 Census and since most accounts of this family list six children, it is
assumed that she died young; Josiah was run down by a car while still a child;
Virginia was asphyxiated by a leaky gas stove; and Shirley died at birth.
Nellie (Enos) Champlin was born on February 23, 1897 at Red House (Cattaraugus
County) New York and died on May 13, 1935 at Wellsville (Allegany County) New

graves of both Josiah and Nellie in the Maple Lawn Cemetery at Bolivar, New York.
Their separate stones read: Josiah Champlin (1890—1956) and Nellie champlin
(1897—1935). Kathleen and I returned to Maple Lawn on July 31, 1993. According to
the cemetery map in the caretaker’s office, Josiah and Nellie’s daughters
Virginia (died Jan 1942) and “baby” (died 1930) were buried with them in unmarked
graves.
Nellie Enos was the daughter of Frank Enos who died on December 16, 1954 and Mary
L. Burch who was born at Salamanca, New York on January 18, 1908.
In the 1920 Census, Josiah (29 Penn) was enumerated on North Main Street,
Bolivar, New York with wife Nellie (21 NY) and children Ethel N. (2 NY) and
Florence M. (1. NY).

railroad track worker and later worked in the local oil fields.
