GEOGRAPHY

• The United States of America is the world's third largest country in size and nearly the third largest in terms of population.

• Population: 300,000,000Located in North America, the country is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean. Along the northern border is Canada and the southern border is Mexico. There are 50 states and the District of Columbia.

The United States Flag• The national flag of the United States of America consists of thirteen

equal horizontal stripes of red (top and bottom) alternating with white, with a blue rectangle in the canton bearing fifty small, white stars. The 50 stars on the flag represent the 50 states of the United States of America and the 13 stripes represent the thirteen British colonies that declared independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain.

• On July 4th, 1776, American leaders approved the Declaration of Independence. A new country called The United States of America was formed.

Thanksgiving Day

• Long ago people called Pilgrims left England and came to America for freedom. The first winter was long & hard, many Pilgrims died. But the next year, the Native Americans helped the Pilgrims learn to live in a new land. To celebrate a good harvest, the Pilgrims & the Native Americans shared a special feast of Thanksgiving.

• The Statue of Liberty was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States. The Statue of Liberty became a symbol of Hope and Freedom for those people who dreamed of becoming United States citizens.
