He was born in Boston in 1706. At the age of 15, he worked at his brother’s printing shop. Later, he opened

his own printing office.

In 1739, he founded the first public library in Philadelphia.

In 1748, he retired from printing and started concentrating on science, experiments and inventions.

He was a politician/He was interested in politics (as well). In 1778, he signed the Declaration of 

Independence from England. And in 1787, he signed the United States Constitution.

Exercise 5.

Christopher Columbus was an experienced sailor. He believed the Earth was round and smaller than it is,

and he wanted to travel across the Atlantic Ocean to China and India. He didn’t have ships or money for his

voyage, and he asked  King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain to help him. He  crossed the Atlantic

Ocean and arrived in San Salvador. Columbus didn’t know  he was in America, and he called the people

Indians. He explored Cuba and Haiti and returned to Spain.
