Candle lights at Christmas givespeople warm memories. Makingsomething for the Christmas seasonis part of preparing for the big day.Candleholders are ideal to make foryour own home or as present forloved ones.

We all tend to run out of time, gettoo busy with big projects, so thiseasy to make, simple candleholder isjust what is needed. You can makeseveral for gifts in a short time.Using tea lights has the advantagethey already come in their ownmetal holder, making them muchsafer. This plan gives you three differentdesigns. Like for all plans fromAschi’s Workshop, no special toolsare needed. A simple jigsaw does afine job, a spade drill and sandpaper, that’s all.

The base is the same for all threecandleholders. Begin by preparingthe wood for the main-base. Any

good looking piece of lumber(wood) with a 19mm (§ß4") thicknesswill work fine.

There are many ways to transfer theplan to the wood. If you plan onmaking several candle holders, makea template out of cardboard or thincraft wood first. Otherwise stickwide masking tape onto your wood, than glue the pattern on top usingany kind of glue. Glue sticks workwell. The advantage of using thismethod is that everything can simplybe pulled off after cutting, withouthaving to use turpentine to removeresidue. An added bonus is that themasking tape lubricates the bladeand prevents burning when usinghard woods. The upper base is to be cut from12mm (!?2") timber, a different woodlooks good. The third part is awheel, which is drilled out to holdthe tea light. The base drawingshows the placing of the parts forthe first two candleholders.

The base for the third candleholderhas the same parts, but they arearranged differently. (see photo) After the tree parts are glued in thedesired position, drill out the actual-ly candleholder. While a “ForstnerBit” gives a better finish, a “SpadeDrill” does a fine job, is low costand readily available. Tea lights haveusually a diameter of 38mm (1!?2").Cheap tea lights vary in size.

For Scrollers:Try cutting the base and actual can-dle holder as relief cut. Tilt yourtable 2-3 degrees, I can’t give youthe exact number as it depends onthe thickness of the wood and onyour blade. (do a few trial cuts inscraps of the same wood) It alsodepends on how high you want your“hill” and “holder” to stick up. Ifyour saw only tilts one way youhave to saw counter clockwise tobring the wood up and clockwise to

bring it back down for the inside ofthe actual holder. Just to make suretry it on scrap! If you’re lucky enough to have a sawthat tilts both ways just tilt it the otherway for the inside of the actual hold-er. Once cut just use a few drops ofglue on the edges and stick the piecesback in. This method saves wood asit’s all cut from one piece. No gluingon extra pieces, no chance of piecescoming off in little hands. It’s also agood way to give relief cutting a try.
