his concert explores music’s call to freedom. The rousing

and turbulent Finlandia wasSibelius’ nationalistic response toRussian oppression. Shostakovich’s5th Symphony gives voice to his fellow citizens’ despair and secrethopes for a better world during the Stalinist purges of the 1930s, mingling tragedy and triumph in an unforgettable creation. Tackled by only the most fearless of pianists,Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on aTheme of Paganini is a brilliant set ofvariations, including one of the mostrecognizable themes in all of Romanticclassical music. Continuing our special relationship with The CurtisInstitute of Music, we welcomeMicah McLaurin, winner of severalinternational piano competitions, including the Ettlingen InternationalCompetition for Young Pianists.
