Study Guide for - Approved Controversy

Summary of this week’s message: All year we are spending time in Luke’s Gospel and his account of the life of Jesus. And what a year it’s been so far. Luke’s detailed account of the life of Jesus has provided a rich dive into why we follow Jesus. The good that He unleashed on the world is eternal and changes lives still today. In today’s sermon, we look at a facet of the life of Jesus as He invited controversy often as we sought to impact other’s lives. Religiosity had no place in Jesus’ mission. What looked like a rebel and rule-breaker to some, was a savior to the rest. We are thankful for the rebellious side of Jesus because His rebellion was always pointed towards anything that kept people from experiencing God’s grace.

SERMON STUDY & DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: Discuss It! Answer these questions together as we begin.

1. Would you say that you have a rebellious side? Why? 2. When was a time you acted rebellious? (Towards parents, at work, etc.) 3. How can you know whether your rebellious attitude is positive or negative? 4. Have you ever thought about Jesus’ rebellious side? What’s your reaction to it?

Read Luke 5: 12-32. Then, discuss the following together as a family, group, or call someone and talk it through.

1. Why did Jesus send the man healed from leprosy to the priest? 2. How do respond to Jesus’ desire for us to be “whole?” 3. How can we share with others that Jesus wants us to be whole? 4.What does it say about Jesus, and our mission, that He sought those who were outcasts and

rejected by the religious leaders of the day? 5. What can we do moving forward to extend that same openness to others that Jesus extended?

Read Luke 5: 33- 6: 11. Then, discuss the following together as a family, group, or call someone and talk it through.

1. Why do you think Jesus didn’t uphold some of the rigid laws of the religious leaders, especially those related to the Sabbath?

2. What stands in the way of you leveraging your life for the good of others? 3. How will you be reminded to leverage your life for the good of others? 4.Will you make a plan to keep the mission of Jesus in front of you? How?

Life Group Serving Opportunities One of the greatest things about being in a Life Group are the ways you can serve. There are several local ministries that LCC partners with. Below are some that you and your Life Group can do something about right now! These are ongoing opportunities that can be life transforming for your group and the people you will impact.

1. Boone County Mentoring We have an incredible organization in our town that provides hope to the next generation. Boone County Mentoring is the place where your simple intentional presence can be life changing to a youth in our community. Your Life Group can be full of people who invest in the next generation. If this is something you or your group want to look into (which we strongly encourage), please go to boonecountymentoring.org for more information!

2. Shalom House Another fantastic organization in our community is the Shalom House. Shalom is an outpost of hope to many people who are suffering, lonely, and in need of a simple meal right here in Lebanon. And, it’s super easy to get started serving at Shalom! Every week they need groups who can commit to come and help serve a hot meal to these people in need of hope. It’s a restaurant-like experience that the people who come feel valued and loved and YOU can be a part of that. More information at lebanoncommunityshalom.com or contact Lisa at [email protected] and you can get connected.

3. Life Centers The mission of Life Centers is to affirm the value of life by providing a network of care to those experiencing pregnancy-related decisions and by compassionately presenting biblical truth resulting in changed lives to the glory of God. Head over to lifecenters.com and see how your Life Group could get involved!
