THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME “When Jesus talked about morality he didn’t mince words. One word that could summarize his teaching on the moral life might be “integrity.” As we search the Gospels we have to look hard to find Jesus talking much about sexuality. When he met sinners of any ilk, he offered them forgiveness and told them to change their ways. He rarely quoted the law except to comment on its deeper meaning. But what really seemed to get Jesus going was hypocrisy, especially on the part of the people with power or position. We might say that he critiqued them unmercifully, except that his pro-phetic critique was another expression of the mercy that called them to conversion. As is to be expected, the authori-ties he lambasted were the ones who became his bittersweet enemies. Nobody likes to be unmasked as a phony. “The problem that set Jesus off on this tirade was that the scribes and Pharisees were saying the right things for the wrong purpose. They had legitimate authority but they used it destructively. They wielded the letter of the law like a hatchet that severed the simple people’s hope for righteous-ness and cut their sense of being close to a loving God. In Jesus’ eyes, that took away all the legitimacy of their leader-ship. CHILI SUPPER FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 17 With less than two weeks to go, we remind you of the up-coming event in place now for about five years – the Chili Supper – scheduled to coincide with the Silver Bells in the City Light Parade: Friday, November 17, from 5:00 – 6:00 pm. No matter what the weather may be for the parade, you can count on the Parish Hall offering warm shelter and warming chili for nourishment. And we usually have a wide variety of styles available: meat or meatless chili, bean or no bean, (nothing too hot, spice-wise, but you can bring your own hot sauce to “liven” things up). We’ll likely have corn bread and drinks available too. Anyone is welcome to come and share a bowl of chili! To secure a coveted parking place so close to the down-town action, put your offertory envelope on your dashboard and you’ll be able to park close-in to the Parish Hall – for a short walk to and from the parade route. After 6:00pm the parking places go to the general public. CCHD – CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DE-VELOPMENT In two weeks we will be asking your support for the annu-al CCHD Appeal. There are over 46 million people in the United States living in poverty, and this collection supports programs to empower local communities to address the challenges they face. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development supports those living in poverty across the country to identify and address the unique obstacles they face as they work to lift themselves out of poverty. In addition, 25 percent of funds collected will remain in our diocese to fund local anti-poverty projects. By supporting this collection, you are giving those on the margins a hand up, not a hand out. Please pray about what you can make as

WOMEN’S SILENT RETREAT St. Francis Retreat Center in DeWitt is offering a silent retreat version of its “Entering the Heart of God” week-end on November, 17-19, 2017. This weekend is based upon Fr. Charlie Irvin’s book by the same title, and takes the Our Father and breaks it open to expose the richness that lies within the prayer our Lord gave us. The week-end offers ample time for contemplation and individual reflection, and spiritual direction for those seeking that opportunity. GRAVE BLANKET & WREATHS St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery has begun taking orders for grave blankets, infant pillows, wreaths and cross wreaths. “OPEN DOORS” TUTORING PROGRAM St. Therese Parish (on Lansing’s north side) is home to “Open Doors”, a free tutoring center for children in grades K-6. Children from all over the city are being helped with reading and math skills by volunteer tutors on Mondays and Wednesday from 4:00 – 6:00 pm. We are looking for more people who would like to be part of this rewarding ministry.
