THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME We are coming to the close of another liturgical year. This past year we have been hearing a great deal from St. Matthew’s Gospel. We are coming to the end of St. Mat-thew’s Gospel and we hear Jesus telling parables to his dis-ciples about what the kingdom of heaven will be like. He uses several different images because he wants to put before the people whatever picture will help them to appreciate the “readiness factor” that always applies. This part of Matthew’s Gospel “focuses on the last things, particularly God’s final judgment, which will mean con-demnation for the wicked and salvation for the just…In this part of his long address, Jesus uses parables that explain how believers should live in the present age as they await the parousia (second coming).” (Workbook for Lectors, Gospel Readers and Proclaimers of the Word, 2017, p. 280)
While the first reading praised Wisdom and all those who seek her, Jesus gives us the parable contrasting the foolish and the wise – wanting us to consider who is who, both then and now. The difference between foolishness and wisdom, here and elsewhere in Matthew’s Gospel, is that the wise hear the word and put it into practice. CCHD-Catholic Campaign for Human Development Next weekend is the one designated for the annual Catho-lic Campaign for Human Development appeal. Over 46 million people in the United States live in poverty. This collection supports programs to empower people to identify and address the obstacles they face as they work to lift themselves out of poverty. Please prayerfully consider what you might be able to give to this year’s appeal. Thank you for your generosity. CHILI SUPPER THIS COMING FRIDAY I’ve written about it twice before. Suffice it to say there’ll be a variety of chilis to sample in the Parish hall from about 5:00pm to 6:00pm. You can then head over to the Silver Bells in the City parade, or turn around and go home. Because parking is always an issue that night, we put vol-unteer “guards” at our entrances and anyone who has put their Church Envelope on their dashboard, will be able to use one of the available parking places. Barring a repeat of those torrential rains that came – either in 2016 or 2015 – there will be some pretty nifty fireworks behind and above the Capitol building at the end of the pa-rade. Many of our families struggle to provide basic needs for their family. Our Holiday Giving programs provide local families with joy on Christmas. Our Adopt-A-Family cam-paign provides Wish Lists for a sibling group and items that will benefit an entire household. POTLUCK & FAMILY ADORATION NEWS Our final potluck for 2017 will be Wednesday, November 15 at 6pm in the parish hall. Bring $2 for the main dish and a dish to pass and enjoy good food and fellowship. Watch the bulletin in 2018 for our restart date. Family Adoration half hour will also not be held in December. (These are held on 1st Friday evenings and followed by a potluck and game night.) Wishing all parishioners blessings this Thanksgiving and Christmas. Make a New Year’s Resolution to attend one or both of these gatherings in 2018.
KofC CHRISTMAS CARDS The Knights of Columbus will be selling Christmas cards and some related items again this year. They will be selling cards after weekend Masses in November, in the church lobby.
WOMEN’S SILENT RETREAT St. Francis Retreat Center in DeWitt is offering a silent retreat version of its “Entering the Heart of God” week-end on November, 17-19, 2017. This weekend is based upon Fr. Charlie Irvin’s book by the same title, and takes the Our Father and breaks it open to expose the richness that lies within the prayer our Lord gave us. The week-end offers ample time for contemplation and individual reflection, and spiritual direction for those seeking that opportunity. GRAVE BLANKET & WREATHS St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery has begun taking orders for grave blankets, infant pillows, wreaths and cross wreaths. The first order is expected to arrive the week of Thanksgiving, November 20, with orders being taken through December 1. Grave blankets are $75, infant pillows $50, wreaths $40 and cross wreaths $50. “OPEN DOORS” TUTORING PROGRAM St. Therese Parish (on Lansing’s north side) is home to “Open Doors”, a free tutoring center for children in grades K-6. Children from all over the city are being helped with reading and math skills by volunteer tutors on Mondays and Wednesday from 4:00 – 6:00 pm. We are looking for more people who would like to be part of this rewarding ministry.
