RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Our Religious Education Program is doing a Thanksgiving Food Drive! There is a competition be-tween each class. The class that collects the most items wins and gets a prize! Last year we surpassed our goal of 70 items, so this year our goal is to collect 100 items total! Please bring in non-perishable food and drop it off in the designated boxes in your child’s Religious Ed. classroom. Thank you and God bless!

teachings, people of faith are able to develop a well-formed conscience to help with their decision-making process. The Catechism of the Catholic Church articulates that a well-formed conscience is more than a feeling; it is actually the voice of God, revealing truth and informing one’s deci-sions. Voting one’s conscience has to begin with an open-ness for the truth and a desire to do good. People of faith should study Scripture and the teachings of the Church, ex-amine the facts around various choices and issues, and fi-nally, pray about what God is asking of them with their vote. The document Forming Consciences for Faithful Cit-izenship is a great resource and can be found at www.faithfulcitizenship.org Pray: Pray for good decision-making while considering the candidates and issues on the ballot. Pray for the election and for all those who are running for office so that they will keep in mind the common good of all and make wise choices. “The Church is involved in the political process but is not partisan. The Church cannot champion any candidate or party. Our cause is the defense of human life and dignity and the protection of the weak and vulnerable.” – USCCB Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship. 2015

THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Many, if not most of you recall the late, radio broadcaster, Paul Harvey’s The Rest of the Story segments that gave us the “back story” we would never have known otherwise, behind the parts that we did know. We could use a big dose of that with today’s First Read-ing from the second book of Maccabees which has gotten seriously truncated for its succinctness/brevity. So, here goes… “Therein, the ancient author has offered an emotional his-tory of the revolt of the Jews against the Seleucids, whose leader, Antiochus Epiphanes IV, was fiercely intent upon Hellenizing all under his command. So fierce were his methods that, when anyone refused to obey A.E. IV, they were cruelly tortured and martyred for their faith. To en-courage his contemporaries to remain faithful to God and strong in their resistance against their oppressors, the author of 2 Maccabees told the stories of their martyrs, assuring them that, like the martyrs who went to their death profess-ing their faith in God, they too would know the same re-ward, i.e., resurrection to life with God forever. “In telling the story of the seven brothers and their moth-er, the ancient author has infused the narrative with the doc-trine of the resurrection. At the point of death, each brother made a statement that declared his faith in God and in the resurrection, in which he placed all his hope. Their mother did the same. Each declaration of faith built upon the ones that preceded it. All the declarations together formed an eloquent doctrinal summary of resurrection, retribution and reward – encouragement to all who are made to suffer un-justly for their beliefs.” (Preaching Resources: Celebration; 11/5/16, Patricia Sanchez, p.1.)

We are coming to the end of the Sundays of the liturgical year (Nov. 20) and so we are reminded about end times on the one hand but really about everlasting life – what lies beyond “time” as we measure it. The Gospel relates Jesus’ answer to the Sadducees’ ques-tion about marriage in heaven or at the resurrection. The Sadducees were the group that didn’t believe in the resur-rection. Their argument was based on the assumption that life after death would simply be a repetition or extension of life in the present time. That approach is flawed. Those who are risen to life in God live as a totally new creation. There is no need for marriage; all are children of the God of Moses, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. God is a God not of the dead but of the living. VOTE TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 8 Because your Vote counts! Faithful Citizenship… What does it mean to “vote my conscience?” Catholics are called to make thoughtful, informed choices at the ballot box. While at times this may seem overwhelm-ing, the Catholic Church urges each person to evaluate can-didates and issues through an understanding of Catholic social teaching. A MONTH OF THANKSGIVING In November, we pause to remember the things we’re grateful for and blessings in everyday life. But as the days grow shorter and the seasons change, many of our newest neighbors need support. At St. Vincent Catholic Charities, we serve refugees who strive to find a place in this country.
