Continued from last week 42. Furthermore, “the decline in population, due to a mentality against having children and promoted by the world politics of reproductive health, creates not only a situation in which the relationship between generations is no longer ensured but also the danger that, over time, this decline will lead to economic impoverishment and a loss of hope in the future. The development of bio-technology has also had a major impact on the birth rate”. Added to this are other factors such as “industrialization, the sexual revolution, the fear of overpopulation and economic problems… Consumerism may also deter people from having children, simply so they can maintain a certain freedom and life-style”. The upright consciences of spouses who have been generous in transmitting life may lead them, for sufficiently serious reasons, to limit the number of their children, yet precisely “for the sake of this dignity of conscience, the Church strongly rejects the forced State intervention in favour of contraception, sterilization and even abortion”. Such measures are unacceptable even in places with high birth rates, yet also in countries with disturbingly low birth rates we see politicians encouraging them. As the bishops of Korea have said, this is “to act in a way that is self-contradictory and to neglect one’s duty”. 43. The weakening of faith and religious practice in some societies has an effect on families, leaving them more isolated amid their difficulties. The Synod Fathers noted that “one symptom of the great poverty of contemporary culture is loneliness, arising from the absence of God in a person’s life and the fragility of relationships. There is also a general feeling of powerlessness in the face of socio-cultural realities that oftentimes end up crushing families… Families often feel abandoned due to a lack of interest and attention on the part of institutions. The negative impact on the social order is clear, as seen in the demographic crisis, in the difficulty of raising children, in a hesitancy to welcome new life, in a tendency to see older persons as a burden, and in an increase of emotional problems and outbreaks of violence. The State has the responsibility to pass laws and create work to ensure the future of young people and help them realize their plan of forming a family”.

God of endless love, ever caring, ever strong, always present, always just:
You gave your only son to save us by the blood of his cross.
Gentle Jesus, shepherd of peace, join to your own suffering the pain of all who have
been hurt in body, mind, and spirit by those who betrayed the trust placed in them.
Hear our cries as we agonise over the harm done to our brothers and sisters.
Breathe wisdom into our prayers, soothe restless hearts with hope, steady shaken spirits with faith:
Show us the way to justice and wholeness, enlightened by truth and enfolded in your mercy.
Holy Spirit, comforter of hearts, heal your people’s wounds and
transform our brokenness. Grant us courage and wisdom, humility

Fr ANTONY HOME VISITATIONS Fr Antony has commenced home visitations and hopes to visit all parishioners at least once a year to get to know you and your family. Those who don’t want a visit please let Tracy (54 468 235) know so that there won’t be any inconvenience to you or Fr Antony.

SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION Please note: Fr Antony is available for the sacrament of reconciliation up to 45mins before Mass each day. Fr requests that those requiring reconciliation to please sit in the last two pews in the church on the left hand side in front of the confessional box. Fr Antony, whilst waiting to hear confessions will be seated right hand side of the church under the heater saying his prayers. Once penitent is observed Fr Antony will enter the confessional for the sacrament of reconciliation.

It is a way of showing our appreciation of the many years of service by the Clergy within the Sandhurst Diocese. Envelopes (if Michael hasn't already given you one) are at the back of the Church for your generous donations. Take home and return to be placed on the collection plate. Fr Andrew Fewings is the Priest that is involved in organising and maintaining collections for retired Priests. This appeal is normally associated with Fathers Day celebrations within Australia but due to an oversight we have decided to present it to our congregation at this time. I must be filled with joy if my feet are on the right road and my face set towards the gate which is called beautiful, though I may fall many times in the mire and often in the mist go astray. ST. FRANCIS TRANSITUS There will be prayer and reflection on the life and death of St. Francis (Transitus) on Monday 3rd October @ 7.30 pm – at the Poor Clare Monastery, Edwards Road, Kennington. All most welcome, with light refreshments afterwards.
OCTOBER MARIAN FESTIVAL When: Sunday 2nd October. The Annual October Marian Festival will take place at the Sacred Heart Cathedral on Sunday October 2nd. The festival will commence with the entrance procession of the statue of Our Lady of Fatima for the 11:00am Mass celebrated by Bishop Leslie Tomlinson. After lunch (BYO , tea and coffee are provided) there will be a Rosary Procession around the Cathedral and during the afternoon devotions the Bishop will make the Act of Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and also crown the statue. The guest speaker, Fr Francis Denton, will talk on the message of Fatima. There will be Eucharistic Adoration concluding with Benediction Confessions with be available during the afternoon. The Festival will conclude at 3:40pm with afternoon tea in the Catholic Hall. There will also be a piety stall in the hall during lunch and afternoon tea. All are invited to learn more about the importance of the Fatima Message and devotion and to pray for peace and moral values in our troubled world.

SEXUAL ABUSE CLAIMS AGAINST FRANCISCAN FRIARS
The Franciscan Order has always taken seriously any complaints against accepted professional standards and any allegations of abuse by friars. In recent years, allegations have been made against a few friars who have served in our ministries across Australia. If you or anyone you know has been abused by any Franciscan Friar, we urge you to contact directly the Police on 1800 333 000 or the Victorian Professional Standards Office on (03) 5023 6790. The Franciscan Friars are deeply sorry for abuse that has been perpetrated upon children and vulnerable adults in any of the parishes or other pastoral works where we have ministered in the past or where we minister now. Sexual abuse is abhorrent and we Franciscans continue to commit ourselves to doing all in our ability to assist abused people in the best way possible, particularly those who have been hurt by some members of our Order. What a Life! A priest, an evangelist, and a minister were in a row boat in the middle of a pond fishing. None of
them had caught anything all morning.
Then the evangelist stands up and says he needs to go to the bathroom so he climbs out of the boat and walks on the water to shore. He comes back ten minutes later the same way.
Then the minister decides he needs to go to the bathroom, too, so he climbs out of the boat and
walks on the water to shore. He, too, comes back the same way ten minutes later.
The priest looks at both of them and decides that his faith is just as strong as his fishing buddies and that he can walk on water, too. He stands up and excuses himself. As he steps out, he makes a
big splash down into the water.
The evangelist looks at the minister and says, "I suppose we should have told him where the rocks were."
