VISION: We, the St Liborius parish Community, seek to support each other in growing together in faith and sharing this faith with the wider community.

St Augustine’s (Myers Flat), St Stephen’s (Raywood) Communities Growing Together

8th May, 2016 - the ascension of the lord, YEAR c

Fr Junjun Corner At the backyard of our first family home before grew a fruit tree called ‘Caimito’ or star-apple. Its fruit is sweet and watery that I just loved it as a kid. I remember, at school, we kids would spend some of our recess time climbing the ‘Caimito tree’ and greedily ate those ripe fruit. So when my dad planted this fruit tree in our backyard, I was so looking forward to enjoying its fruit, so much so that when it bore its first fruit, I couldn’t wait for it to get ripe , so I picked it off right away. After that, the tree never bore fruit again, as far as I know anyway. I remember my mum said to me: ‘It never bore fruit again because it was upset you took its first fruit right away.’ I’d like to believe in my mum but I just thought, it is ridiculous because fruit trees are naturally meant to bear fruits, and it is not a valid reason to only bear one. Friends, today we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord into heaven. This is the second glorious mystery. We glory indeed because Jesus promised us that he would go before us to prepare a place for us in his Father’s house. We are also to be glad and rejoice because his ascension would pave for us his greatest gift to all his followers of all time- the Holy Spirit- who would teach us the Truth (God loves us so much), who would remind us of the Way (God’s own Son, sent for our salvation) and who would be our Life (God-within-us). But this is not just about Jesus. It is also about us. As Luke recalls, before he ascended into heaven Jesus commanded his disciples to be ‘witnesses’ for him to all the world. In other words, Jesus is commanding us to bear fruit not naturally but supernaturally through the power of the Holy Spirit. To be witnesses for Christ, is to be who we say we are. We are Christians, thus we are to be the image, the figure, the representatives of Christ in the world, not as the Messiah (because there is only one Messiah), but as Christ loves the sinners, feeds the hungry, comforts the sorrowful, gives life to those who are in the brink of death, etc. To bear fruit is to be true to ourselves. A Caimito is meant to bear fruit, and not to have one is not in accordance with its nature. We are people, created in love in order to love, created as good and to share and show this goodness to others. Finally to bear fruit is to acknowledge we need God all the time. This means allowing God to be part of our life, having control and influence in our words, in our thoughts and in our deeds. That’s why we need repentance and to preach repentance to others to be true to ourselves before God. Happy Mothers’ Day to all mothers and I pray you have a good week ahead.

Pope Francis Corner Misericordiae vultus: On this Jubilee Year of Mercy

Grace, Mercy and Peace (continued from last week)

22. A Jubilee also entails the granting of indulgences. This practice will acquire an even more important meaning in the Holy Year of Mercy. God’s forgiveness knows no bounds. In the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God makes even more evident his love and its power to destroy all human sin. Reconciliation with God is made possible through the paschal mystery and the mediation of the Church. Thus God is always ready to forgive, and he never tires of forgiving in ways that are continually new and surprising. Nevertheless, all of us know well the experience of sin. We know that we are called to perfection (cf. Mt 5:48), yet we feel the heavy burden of sin. Though we feel the transforming power of grace, we also feel the effects of sin typical of our fallen state. Despite being forgiven, the conflicting consequences of our sins remain. In the Sacrament of Reconciliation, God forgives our sins, which he truly blots out; and yet sin leaves a negative effect on the way we think and act. But the mercy of God is stronger even than this. It becomes indulgence on the part of the Father who, through the Bride of Christ, his Church, reaches the pardoned sinner and frees him from every residue left by the consequences of sin, enabling him to act with charity, to grow in love rather than to fall back into sin.

The Church lives within the communion of the saints. In the Eucharist, this communion, which is a gift from God, becomes a spiritual union binding us to the saints and blessed ones whose number is beyond counting (cf. Rev 7:4). Their holiness comes to the aid of our weakness in a way that enables the Church, with her maternal prayers and her way of life, to fortify the weakness of some with the strength of others. Hence, to live the indulgence of the Holy Y ear means to approach the Father’s mercy with the certainty that his forgiveness extends to the entire life of the believer. To gain an indulgence is to experience the holiness of the Church, who bestows upon all the fruits of Christ’s redemption, so that God’s love and forgiveness may extend everywhere. Let us live this Jubilee intensely, begging the Father to forgive our sins and to bathe us in his merciful “indulgence.”

Look with kindness on all mothers, and all mother figures, strengthen them in their roles as

light in their homes, give them comfort in moments of sorrow, and joy in their work all

they do for their families. Listen to their prayers, and bless them in all

ROSTERS

A Tribute to the Mothers - What my mother taught me!

My mother taught me LOGIC: " If you fall off that swing and break your neck, you can't go to the store with me." My mother taught me MEDICINE: " If you don' t stop crossing your eyes, they're going to freeze that way." My mother taught me TO THINK AHEAD: " If you don' t pass your spelling test, you'll never get a good job!"

My mother taught me about GENETICS: " You are just like your father !"

My mother taught me HUMOR: " When that lawn mower cuts off your toes, don' t come running to me."

My mother taught me TO MEET A CHALLENGE:" What were you thinking? Answer me when I talk to you...Don't talk back to me!"

And my all time favorite thing, JUSTICE: " One day you will have kids, and I hope they turn out just like YOU... then you'll see what it's like."
