To Wax or Not to Wax?

Waxing can be used for removing hair from virtually any part of the body. It is most commonly used for removing hair on the arms,

legs, underarms and bikini line. Other parts of body where waxing is frequently used for hair-removal are face, including upper lips, lower lips, eyebrows and chin, and the chest and back.

The benefits of waxing are: Smooth, Silky Skin that Lasts - Waxing removes hair from the root, so it takes a longer time for hair to grow again, anywhere from 3-8 weeks, depending on the individual speed of hair growth. To Wax or Not to Wax?


Road cycling is an exhilarating way to challenge yourself and get fit

You know what they say about riding a bike – once you’ve learned you never forget. So if you enjoyed zooming down hills when you were younger (and struggling up them!) road cycling may be the ideal sport for you.

As the name suggests, road cycling involves riding exclusively on roads, and the aim is to build up your speed and the distance you can cover.

It’s a very efficient way to get fit and lose weight as it’s one of the few sports that you can sustain for two to four hours. Like running, it gets you out in the fresh air, but it is low impact and places less strain on your joints.

Road bikes are designed for racing. They have a lightweight frame, narrow tyres and rounded handlebars so that you sit forward in an aerodynamic position. You can pay anything from £150 to £5000 plus. Cheaper bikes are made from steel or aluminium, while the more expensive are carbon fibre or titanium, which is amazingly strong and light.

If you decide to take up the sport seriously, look for a well-known brand and expect to pay around £600. Getting the right size is important, so ask your local bike shop for advice. Your legs should be almost straight when they are on the pedal at bottom of the turn.

There are two types of pedals on road bikes. Platform pedals are like those on a traditional bicycle and you will need to add toe clips. Modern clipless pedals will need special shoes with cleats on them that fix your foot to the pedals.

The saddle of a road bicycle is normally very narrow and can be uncomfortable, so you may want to get a gel cover or wear padded shorts.

When you’re out on the roads, safety has to be your top priority. A helmet is a must, as is brightly coloured clothing.

Ride your bike as if you were driving a car and obey traffic laws. Take a tool kit with you – a spare inner tube, tyre levers, puncture repair kit, pump and Allen keys are essential. It’s also sensible to carry your address and phone number in

case of an accident.

Think of road cycling as a long-term sport. It will take you a few weeks to get used to your bike and build up your speed and stamina. Joining a club is a great way to keep motivated. You’ll find a directory of over 1500 clubs at www.britishcycling.org.uk ranging from informal groups who ride for pleasure to competitive racing teams.

A Jar of Nostalgia

If you’re reading this you probably have an interest in gardening, but even armchair gardeners must be happy that spring is now well under way. May

brings with it a wonderful selection of flowers, mainly in cool blues, purples, pinks and whites, and some great fragrances too, including the heady scent of Lilac. It’s an old fashioned shrub which has fallen out of favour, and for the majority of the year it looks relatively uninteresting – but the Lilac bush smells fantastic in a gentle May evening breeze. Mix this aroma with the scent of freshly mown grass and you have the most perfect spring fragrance, better than any air-freshener.

After a long winter with more snow than I can ever remember, and yet more depressing news about our economy, I think what we all need is to enjoy a little nostalgia; I’m not talking bunting here, but bedding plants. Towards the end of the month is the time when bedding plants and other tender perennials can be planted outside.

Thousands of people will flock to garden centres up and down the country over the coming weeks, and for some it’s their only pilgrimage of the year to the outdoor retail world. It’s an opportunity for the nurseryman (or woman) to display row after row of highly colourful plants, stacked, tray by tray like jars of sweets in an old fashioned shop. Each standing to attention, faces held high, their label pointing forwards and each doing their utmost to shout “buy me, buy me”.

The flowers shine in the sunshine like the sparkling boiled fruit sweets in the jars, oh what is it to be, the bi coloured rhubarb custards, or the combination of blackberry and raspberry jellies?

Choosing your colour scheme for this year’s bedding display (be that just the one hanging basket or a front garden that looks like a Victorian public park) is exciting, and a totally personal task. I’ve know it can cause arguments between couples, but have also known marriages which have survived successfully on the basis that “you plant your side and I’ll plant mine”.

There are those who like a multi coloured cocktail of plants (a mixed tray of Petunias for example), those who prefer to stick to a muted pallet of 2-3 ‘sophisticated colours’ (usually purple, blue and white) and then those trying to achieve a Swiss cottage look who might plummet for just the one (perhaps a red trailing Ivy Leafed Pelargonium).

But whatever your preference I don’t think it really matters, because buying annual bedding plants brings nostalgic happiness all round; it’s good for the nurseryman’s business, brilliant for passersby to enjoy, and most importantly great at making you feel happy at home. Happy Gardening, Lee

CommunityDates Unveiled for Mansfield Arts Festival

Artists, musicians, singers, dancers, Thespians and entertainers are being invited to come together once again this summer to celebrate the

best of Mansfield, when the Mansfield Arts Festival returns for a second year.

The festival, which is organised by Mansfield District Council, will take place between 6 July and 21 July.

A number of events have already been confirmed for the festival including the James Maude Camera Club exhibition and Mansfield Society of Artists’ exhibition at Mansfield Museum. The Arts Festival programme will also feature the closing show of the Palace Theatre’s community production of Brassed Off.

People from across the District are encouraged to get involved during the fortnight by either holding their own performance or exhibition, or participating in one of the events currently being organised.If you would like to stage your own event during the fortnight please register at www.mansfield.gov.uk/artsfestival

Performances and exhibitions can take place in a venue local to you, or the Council may be able to help you find a suitable indoor or outdoor venue. All registered events will be promoted as part of the festival.

The Mansfield Arts Festival was created in 2012 and inspired by the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. The event saw a range of community events from storytelling to acrobatics, big band jazz performances to guided tours of Mansfield town centre. The festival was brought to a close with a series of seven mini plays on five outdoor stages across Mansfield, called Not Much Matches Mansfield by Kevin Fegan.

The Arts Festival forms part of the District Council’s events calendar, which aims to attract visitors to the town. This year’s programme will also include a series of events in the town centre, which will be delivered in partnership with Mansfield BID. Following a significant reduction in the Council’s events’ budget, the Council has reviewed its annual programme and come to the decision that it is not able to hold the

annual Party in the Park event. However, it is hoped that the alternative events and activities will help the Council achieve its corporate priorities.

District Council, said: “The Mansfield Arts Festival aims to capture and showcase the variety of artistic talent across the District. Last year’s event was a great success and we are keen to build on this and have as many people involved in the fortnight’s activities as possible. So if you are involved in a local drama

group, sing in a choir, perform in a dance troupe or have an artistic talent and would like to showcase your work then please get in touch.

“We’d also like to encourage people to enter into the spirit of the week by holding events with their friends and neighbours. It could be a small musical performance at home or sharing stories of years gone by; the idea is just to have fun!”

Buttermilk Scones with Fruit CompoteMakes 10-12 • Preparation time 15 minutes • Cooking time 15 minutes

Ingredients

Scones450g self-raising flour, plus extra for dusting

¼ tsp salt100g cold butter, diced

85g golden caster sugar

Handful of raisins or sultanas (optional)

284ml pot buttermilk

2 tsp vanilla extract

Splash of milk

CompoteFrozen fruit of choice – summer fruit mix is good, sour cherries are fantastic

Sugar to taste

MethodHeat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Sift the flour and salt together. Rub in the butter until the mixture is like fine crumbs. Stir in the sugar and raisins or sultanas if using.Gently warm the buttermilk (don’t throw away the pot) and vanilla in a microwave or pan. Using your largest bowl, quickly tip in some of the flour mix, followed by some of the buttermilk mix, repeating until everything is in the bowl. Use a knife to quickly mix together to form a dough - don’t over-mix it.

Tip onto a floured surface and lightly bring together with your hands a couple of times. Press out gently to about 4cm thick and stamp out rounds with a 6cm or 7cm cutter. Re-shape trimmings, until all the dough is used. Place scones evenly on to a lightly floured baking sheet or two. Add a splash of milk into the buttermilk pot, and then use to glaze the top of each scone. Bake for 10-12 mins until golden and well risen.

To Make The Fruit Compote:Place as much of the frozen fruit as you need in the saucepan, on a gentle heat on the hob on top of your cooker.

Simmer the fruit in the saucepan on the hob until the fruit starts to soften; stir gently now and again just enough so that the fruit does not stick to the pan; do not allow it to burn.Now add sugar to taste - not too much at first. Taste the fruit as you add the sugar so that you do not make it too sweet or leave it too tart. Take care not to burn yourself when testing it! Fruit and sugar get very hot.

Once the fruit has softened, but before it turns to a pulp or goes too mushy, it is ready and you should remove it from the heat to cool. It keeps for 2-3 days in the fridge.

Frame your subject properly Don’t cut off

Focus Take time to focus on your subject before you take the picture. If you are photographing a person, focus on their eyes.

Be steady The secret to a crisp, sharp photo is steady hands. Hold the camera firmly and squeeze the shutter button gently, don’t jerk, pull away or move for

a second or two after you’ve pressed the button. Use Natural Light if possible If you have the option to take a picture outdoors do it. If you are indoors, pick big windows, bright rooms or rooms with good lighting for your shots.

Time of day The best times for a great photo are usually at early mornings (dawn) or twilight (dusk) as the light then is warm and golden. Another good time to snap a picture is after a rain shower, the colours and contrast on wet damp objects can be very striking.

Cramp is a common and usually harmless condition where muscles

suddenly become tight and painful. Mostly cramps occur for no apparent reason, but certain things can trigger them such as pregnancy, exercise or some medications.

During cramp the affected muscle fibres contract or shorten suddenly, causing pain. This spasm can last from a few seconds to several minutes. Afterwards the affected muscle might remain tender for a few hours.

Most cases of cramp require no medical treatment and can be relieved by simply stretching the affected muscle. Applying warmth to the area can help too.

Consult your doctor if you suffer frequent night-time cramps which affect your sleep, or if you have other symptoms such as numbness or swelling, which may mean you need blood or urine tests to rule out underlying medical conditions.

Useful tips for night crampsStretch your calf muscles before bedSleep with your feet rested against a pillow to keep them pointing upwards If you sleep on your front, allow your feet to dangle over the edge of the bed so calf muscles are not tensed.

Keep sheets and blankets loose. Wear bed socks to keep your feet toasty. Warm muscles are less likely to spasm.

For a mother, a child’s wedding is a momentous occasion, a day that you will certainly want to look your best.

Here are some aspects to consider when choosing your outfit:

Colour: Find out what colour the bridesmaids dresses are and try to choose an outfit in a complimentary colour. Most believe that the mother of the bride or groom should not wear white or ivory, these being the bride’s prerogative. Many also frown on black seeing it as a mourning colour and red, believing it to be too bold. The colour should of course flatter your skin tone.

Style: Choose a style that flatters and is also comfortable. Most wedding celebrations are now lengthy affairs, so you will not want to wear something that feels too constricting, or that you are constantly fiddling with. If an off the peg outfit does not fit perfectly, consider getting it altered.

Think about the weather, so that you can choose an outfit in a fabric of the correct weight. Avoid materials that crease easily as this will look unsightly on photographs. Outfits that include jackets can give the impression of two outfits once the jacket is removed. Whilst it is certainly true that outfits for mothers have become more fashionable recently, most still feel that an elegant and sophisticated look is appropriate.

Many mothers go shopping for their outfit with the bride; this can be an enjoyable occasion and ensure that choices meet with approval. It may also be wise to discuss outfits with the mother of your future daughter or son in law to avoid the embarrassment of wearing something similar.

Hats: One of the traditional ways for mothers to mark the importance of their child’s wedding is to wear a hat.

When I was a child a birthday party consisted of a few sandwiches, a bowl of jelly and a game of musical chairs. Not so

nowadays. Children’s parties are becoming something of an art form, with an ever-increasing choice of activities to make the occasion one to remember!

The first decision is whether to organise your child’s party yourself, or hand it over to an expert. Fast food burger and pizza outlets were perhaps the first to offer organised parties: including food, games and a party host.

Now there is a wide variety of party experiences available, from swimming and bowling, to football and gymnastics; from cake baking and pottery, to paintballing and go-karting. There are princess parties offering make up and pampering sessions and quad biking experiences for the more adventurous. You can enjoy a trip out to a local attraction, or book a session at a play centre. The possibilities seem limitless!

Generally, if you book a party experience you can expect the host to provide the food, the entertainment and in many cases the cake. This takes all the stress out of the organisation and enables you to sit back, watch and enjoy. However if you don’t mind a bit of hard work, hosting your own party can be a satisfying experience which allows you complete freedom over themes, food and entertainment.

You might ask your guests to come dressed as pirates for example. With a little imagination you can create jewels from favourite sweets, get guests to make themselves a hat or eye patch, and turn the house into a desert island with an accompanying map to help guests hunt for hidden ‘treasure’.

Traditional games can be easily adapted to fit a chosen theme. For example, at a dressing-up party instead of passing a parcel children could pass a pillow case filled with oversized clothing. When the music stops they dip their hand in and put

on whatever garment they end up with!

If you find the idea of being totally in charge a little daunting, why not compromise by providing the food yourself but hire a professional for the entertainment (or vice versa)? Magicians, face painters, clowns, puppet shows, discos and bouncy castles are all popular choices, and it is not usually difficult to find a local caterer. Remember though, when planning food to keep it bite size. Small children in particular are notorious for taking a bite and leaving the rest!

However you decide to organise your party, have fun and let the kids do the same!

It is still busy, busy, busy for the Chorus. After the show at Loughborough on the 20th April, it is preparing for the national Convention at Bournemouth on the 3rd – 5th May, 2013. As current champions it will not compete, but will be opening and closing the competition and featuring in shows on Saturday and Sunday. See www.singbarbershop.com . In July there is the International Competition in Toronto and in between two other events.

On Wednesday the 22nd May, 2013, the chorus members invite prospective singers to join them at their rehearsal for an ‘Introduction to singing in Harmony’ evening. It will be at the usual venue Harrington School, Derby Road, Long Eaton, NG10 4BJ at 7.15pm. There is no charge. Expert coaching will be on hand. No singing solo. Come and sing with the best. Saturday the 8th June, sees another show at the Long Eaton Silver Prize Band Hall,

Salisbury Street, NG10 1BA. It will feature the Chorus and two quartets plus one other act to be announced. This is the last performance before the adventure in Toronto.
