$25,000This budget doesn’t necessarily reflect the fee your particular vendors will require. After meeting with vendors, you must identify what your priorities are and reallocate your budget to fit your wants. Budget maintenance is the least fun partof wedding planning, but it should be given the utmost attention. All couples have a number they want to stay under; it’s up to you (or your planner) to make it happen!

Blend more expensive elements with

cost-effective alternatives

Don’t have enough money for that

gorgeous overlay or linen? Utilize the overlay on half

or a third of the tables and introduce a coordinating

runner on the remaining tables. Design your

centerpieces that way, too. Your guests’ eyes will

immediately see the pops where you splurged, and

the alternative tables will coordinate nicely and

make the design look intentional.

That Eye Sore Is A Money PitDon’t waste money covering up

what you think may be an “eye

sore” at your reception. When you

try to cover up a spot you think

detracts from the space, you’ll only

draw eyes toward. Spend money on

what you want the guests to focus

on, and the spot will disappear. Think Beyond yourColor Scheme

When you go with a full-blown theme, you can incorporate unusual elements into your décor, allowing you to get more creative in your design. For example, with a garden or nature theme, you can utilizeelements found in yourbackyard. Going for a vintage theme? Utilize your family’s antiques or scope out garage sales and thrift stores to find great vintage pieces.

Splurge on the Guest Experience Resist the temptation to splurge on your dress

or the flowers and skimp on the entertainment, food and/or bar. It is your day, but ultimately

you want your guests to have a great time and be talking about your wedding for months.

During the planning process, put yourself in their shoes before you take money from one area to

fund another.

We saw the introduction of the “reception lounge”, a groom favorite, last year. In 2013, we’ll see it continue to develop into a reception staple.

Guys love the reception lounge and guests do too. It’s a great area for guests to mix, mingle, and kick-back during thereception.

Enhance your lounge scene with a signature cocktail, microbrew or cigars for guests to enjoy. If you’re having a photo booth, yard games or finger foods, the lounge area is theperfect place to do it.Photos via artofweddingspdx.com

she worked with An Affair To Remember

Jessica held a bouquet ofbaby’s breath that enhanced the romance

of her Vera Wang gown.

Sarah Jane took the wedding party to Scovill Zoo to capture these circus inspired shots.

As a wedding photographer I love to see the ways that couples infuse theirpersonalities into every detail oftheir big day. The Grader-Long Wedding wasunforgettable! Not only was this wedding

fun and absolutely beautiful, but the couple provided their guests with a spectacular

experience. I’m so happy to have been a part of capturing the essence of the day -

it’s certainly one they’ll remember!

A Word fromSarah Jane Photography

Their circus themedreception was held at the DecaturConference Center and Hotel where Duo Rose Trapeze from Chicagoperformed aerial acrobatics directly above their guests.

Jessica’s centerpieces were designed with vintage suitcases and hatboxes accented with lace doilies, umbrellas, and florals of hydrangea, garden roses, crespedia, dahlias, lamb’s ear and hanging amaranthus.

Kari Killen designed circus style table numbers andplacecards that enhanced the overall theme.

Jey Smith &Greg Owens

November 24, 2012

Jey is a girly girl who loves sparkle, lace and Parisian culture. Her groom is fresh with a mordern edge. The couple settled on a color scheme of black and white with pops of Tiffany blue (for him) and blush (for her). The couple worked with An Affair To Remember to achieve a design thatmarried both styles.

Jey and Greg tied the knotat the Decatur Club. The couple was married in the ballroom where the backdrop was used for both the altar and head table.

A custom black and white damask runner added interest to the aisle. The ceremony was lit in blush pink and was switched over to teal for the reception.

Photos byApt Foto

20

While the guests had cocktails on the Mezzanine, An Affair To Remember flipped the room for the reception.

Black and white striped runners were chosen to evoke both a modern and Parisian look. A pop of Tiffany blue came from the ornate picture frame table numbers, that spoke to both Greg and Jey’s styles.

Greg wanted a modern centerpiece. Tall glass cylinder vases, accented with black lace, held bouquets ofhydrangea and carnations tiltedto the side. The candles in thealternating vases gave Jey theromance she was looking for.

It’simportant for you to know if you’re more interested in a cake that makes a statement with size or style. Your inspiration cake can be designed for your appropriate guest count, budget and style if you’re willing to be open and creative.2. You’re No Dummy – A growing trend is the “dummy cake”. Inreference to Tip #1, if you have a large guest count and want an intricately designed cake, a dummy cake allows you to get what you want without breaking the bank. On the flip side, if you have a small guest count, dummy cakes give you the ability to have a large statement cake without all the cake that will undoubtedly be left over. 3. It’s Not Always Peachy -Certain flavors may be yourfavorite, but do they blend well and will your guests also enjoy them? If you and your groom like a particular flavor that may not be popular, have your baker design your cake topper in that flavor. That way you can have your cake and eat it too!4. Fondant vs .Buttercream -Translation: Style vs. Taste.Fondant looks great, but doesn’t taste the greatest. If you’re notdoing a dummy cake, talk to your baker about what she can do to give the appearance of fondant without using the ingredient. You’ll havehappier guests.5. Be Prepared - Bring inspiration pictures (and even color or fabric swatches) to your appointment. Be prepared to explain what you like and don’t like about your inspiration pictures. This will help your baker understand your style and vision.

Quick FixesSOLUTION: Whether it’s a makeup

stain or a clumsy guest

sloshing red wine, a stain

on your dress can ruin

your mood. Here’s how to

avoid it from ruining your

day or your dress. First,

resist the urge to rub or

scrub the stain. Take a

clean, white towel to blot

up any excess moisture.

If the stain is oily, sprinkle

baby powder then blot

with the towel to absorb

the oil. Spot treat the

stain from the outside in –

treat from the stain’s

edges to its middle. For

spot treating, we LOVE

Dryel On the Go Instant

Stain Remover. It works

miracles. Resist using a

bleach pen because if it

does take the stain out, it

might leave a large white

spot. Don’t oversaturate

the material and keep

blotting with white cloths.

Always test a hidden part

of the dress to make sure

the treatment doesn’t

damage or discolor the dress.

CRISIS: “There’s

a stain on my dress!”

SOLUTION: Remember that viral video

that circulated a few years back of that bride

who freaked out in front of her bridesmaids and

cut off all her hair?! That video might have been

a fake, but it’s a very real problem many brides

face. Here’s how you can avoid it and how to fix it

if you’re a victim.

1. Ask for recommendations from people you trust.

2. Ask to see a portfolio of his/her past work.

3. At your trial, make sure he/she takes photos

and/or detailed notes so they can duplicate the

look, and be sure to get a copy!

4. Go with your gut. If something doesn’t feel right

during your trial, it probably isn’t.

5. Pack an emergency hair/makeup kit with the

products used during your trial, just in case…

6. If it’s the BIG DAY and your hair or makeup is a

disaster, do not pay until they get it right. In most

cases, he/she will not want you to leave dissatis-

fied. If they refuse to redo the style, here are a

couple options: 1) Call a trusted local salon ASAP.

Give them your story and see if they can give you

an emergency appointment. 2) Wash your face,

unpin your hair and if you have bridesmaid, friend

or family member who’s hair/makeup savvy, pull

out the photos from your trial and let them fix it.

This is where your emergency kit comes in handy.

CRISIS: “I Look Like a Street Walker!”

Hair & Makeup Disaster

SOLUTION: So, you’ve got a guest who’s indulged a bit too much on

the free booze and he/she is making a scene. Here’s what you can do. Talk to the

event coordinator or manager and ask them to handle the situation. If he/she

cannot be located, ask a responsible groomsmen, family member or friend to

encourage the guest to step outside or to an area where there are not many

guests. Offer the guest some food and a glass of water. If he/she is being

belligerent or refusing the attention, call the guest a cab or ask a friend to drive

them back to the hotel or their residence.

CRISIS: “Shots, shots, shots, shots, shots, shots... everybody!”

Patterns will be hot this year. From chevron to stripes and evenpaisley and polka dots, adding pattern to your linens, invitations or bridal party attire will take your décor to the next level!

Mix and Match – Don’t be afraid to mix it up this year! Tabletop designs will involve lots oflayering with props, patterns and textures. Metallics will be all

the rage this year so bring in the glitz and the glam with rich golds, pewters and silvers!

Vintage Glam and TraditionalElegance – Last year we saw brides roll up their sleeves for truly DIY décor. While that trend isn’tgoing away, 2013 brides will draw inspiration from old world glamour

with influences like “The Great Gatsby” and “Anna Karenina” and turn to professionals to achieve an upscale application. With more

decadent fabrics, ornate lace details, metallics and costume jewelry, receptions will begin to become more formal again.

PearlsWords of advice if local brides could do it all over again...

Maggie Stewart“When discuss-

ing plans with your caterer or reception

hall, make sure to ask them to pack up to-go boxes for you and your new spouse. You will be

so busy enjoying the wedding, you won’t have much time to eat. At the end of the night, you may realize you’re starv-ing. The to-go boxes are the perfect late

night fix!”

Shannon Richards“At some point in

the day take yourself out of the moment to reflect on what isreally happening. I did this while we

were getting ready and at our

reception. It is the best feeling to see all your friends and

family who are there to celebrate with

and for you. It allows you to really

appreciate allof the hard work that went into putting this

day together.”

of Wisdom

Ashley Birkey“Begin with the end in mind! Prioritize what is most important to

you on your day and splurge on those areas.

Also, I highlyrecommend creating

a binder with individual pages and dividers to

organize all thedetails of your wedding.

I scrapbooked the outside with pictures of my husband and me and my new last

name. Now, after the wedding, it serves as a memento from all the fun and memories that were made during the

planning process.”
