The Robert M. and Muriel R. Barksdale Memorial Endowed Scholarship, established by Barksdale Warrior Paper Company and the Barksdale family, honors the memories of Muriel R. Barksdale and Robert M. Barksdale and promotes distance education programs at The University of Alabama. Priority is given to students enrolled in academic programs facilitated through the College of Continuing Studies at The University of Alabama who are 25 or older, who graduated from high schools in West Alabama, and who demonstrate satisfactory academic progress. 2013-2014 Recipient: Judy Sims, Tuscaloosa, Alabama

The Dorothy D. and John Joseph Boyne Endowed Support Fund, established by Dorothy D. Boyne promotes the education of outstanding students pursuing degrees in public service facilitated through the College of Continuing Studies. Recipients must be a resident of Alabama, of junior or senior standing, and demonstrate academic excellence and leadership qualities.

The William E. Bright Endowment for the Support of Natural Gas Program and Scholarships, established by the William E. Bright family, friends, and the Alabama Natural Gas Association, is awarded to employees of member companies or their dependent children. The General Charles G. Cleveland – Maxwell Air Force Base Endowed Scholarship, established by Lieutenant General Charles G. Cleveland and friends, promotes the education of deserving students enrolled in academic programs facilitated through the College of Continuing Studies. Preference for the scholarship is given to members of the U.S. Armed Forces.

The Carolyn and Dennis Dahl Endowed Scholarship, formerly the College of Continuing Studies Scholarship, established by the College and our Board of Visitors in 2004, is funded primarily by proceeds from the College of Continuing Studies Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament and Board of Visitors’ annual contributions. The Gladys M. Fernandez Endowed Scholarship for Single Parents, established by Rudy Fernandez to promote the education of students in the College of Continuing Studies. Priority consideration is given to students who are enrolled in academic degree programs facilitated through the College of Continuing Studies and who are the custodial single parents primarily responsible for the care and development of children who are living at home and are under the age of 18.

Priority is given to students who are either employees or dependents of employees of Big River Industries, located in Marietta, Georgia. The Kay H. Hodges Memorial Endowed Scholarship, established by Board member Captain John E. Hodges, Jr. to honor the memory of his wife, Kay H. Hodges, gives priority to students pursuing nursing degrees facilitated through the College of Con-tinuing Studies. Among qualified applicants, additional preference shall be given to students who graduated from high schools located in the following counties, listed in order of preference: Cobb County, Georgia; Etowah County, Alabama and Tallapoosa County, Alabama.

The James A. Hood Endowed Scholarship for Diversity, established by the Black Faculty and Staff Association, other members of the University community, and friends and colleagues of James A. Hood, recognizes the many contributions of Mr. Hood, the first African American male to enroll at The University of Alabama. This scholarship serves to create educational opportunities for African Americans, to stand as a symbol of the value of diversity, and to promote educational excellence for adult students at The University of Alabama. A recipient must be 25 years of age or older, an Alabama resident and a high school graduate of the state’s public school system.

The Elizabeth Boggan and Ronald Charles Howard Family Endowed Scholarship, established by Elizabeth and Ronald Howard of Pelham, Alabama, along with match-ing funds from AT&T Corporation, promotes the education of outstanding adult students obtaining a degree through the New College LifeTrack Program, formerly the External Degree Program. Preference is given to students who have completed at least 12 semester hours of graded work under the auspices of the New College LifeTrack Program, who have GPAs of 2.0 or better, who are at least 23 years of age, and demon-strate financial need.

The Samuel Howard Memorial Endowed Scholarship, was established from gifts given by Jim and Marian Loftin to honor the memory of the late Samuel Howard. First priority of consideration is given to underprivileged, incarcerated persons who are residents of Alabama, are incarcerated in Alabama, and desire to undergo a distance education program sponsored by The University of Alabama, which may include independent study programs at the high school level. Second priority of consideration is given to nursing students taking courses facilitated through the College of Continu-ing Studies. The Alisa Barr Johnson Endowed Scholarship, established by Verta Barr Meherg in honor of her daughter Alisa Barr Johnson, promotes the education of students in the College of Continuing Studies. Priority is given to graduate nursing students who are facilitating their degree through the College of Continuing Studies. Second priority of consideration is given to undergraduate nursing students who are facilitating their degree through the College of Continuing Studies. If there are no qualified nursing candidates, then priority consideration shall be given to students who are enrolled in the College of Continuing Studies.

The Jerold Kennedy Memorial Endowed Scholarship, established by board member Mike Kennedy and Belmont Homes, Inc., honors the memory of their late president and Chief Executive Officer, Jerold Kennedy. Priority is given to students 25 years of age or older who are enrolled in academic programs through the College of Continuing Studies. The King-Blackburn Friends of the Alabama Gulf Coast Endowed Scholarship, established by Gaither J. King, Jr. and Daniel G. Blackburn, assists students in the Ala-bama Gulf Coast area whose families have been financially or physically impacted by damage caused by hurricanes. Priority is given to recipients who graduated from high schools located in the following counties, listed in order of preference: (1) Baldwin, Mobile, or Escambia County, (2) counties adjacent to Baldwin, Mobile, or Escambia Counties, (3) other counties in the state of Alabama. Applicants must be in a good standing and pursuing a degree through programs facilitated by the College of Con-tinuing Studies.

The William and Sybil Landau Memorial Endowed Scholarship, established by their son David Landau and his wife Sandy of Birmingham, Alabama, with matching funds from the Jefferson County Chapter of the National Alumni Association of The University of Alabama, is awarded to adult students obtaining a degree through the New College Life Track Program, formerly the External Degree Program. This schol-arship honors the memories of William and Sybil Landau, who placed a premium on learning, but due to circumstances were unable to accomplish their education goals. Priority is given to residents of Jefferson County, 25 years of age or older. 2013-2014 Recipient: Glen Hansford, Northport, Alabama 2014-2015 Recipient: Glen Hansford, Northport, Alabama

The Robert Ross MacDonald Memorial Endowed Scholarship, established by the MacDonald family, is awarded to students with a minimum grade point average of 2.5, who are continuing their education with priority given to students whose families are involved directly in the trucking industry or indirectly support the trucking industry. Secondary consideration is given to students who enroll in academic programs facilitated through the College of Continuing Studies.

The Eber Mann Memorial Endowed Scholarship, was established by former Board of Visitors David Roberson, of Double Springs, Alabama and Cavalier Homes, Inc., of Addison, Alabama. This scholarship honors the memory of Eber Mann, a greatly loved community and church leader of Double Springs. The recipient shall be a full-time student from Winston or surrounding counties in Alabama, whose high school academic records, college entrance test scores, and character indicate a reasonable probability of success. Secondary consideration is given to deserving applicants who plan to enroll in academic programs facilitated through the College of Continuing Studies. This scholarship provides up to a full tuition scholarship and is renewable for four years provided the recipient remains in good academic standings.

The Colonel Floyd H. and Grace L. Mann Endowed Scholarship, established by Charter Federal Savings & Loan, the John W. Johnson Jr. family, and friends of the late colonel Mann and Mrs. Mann, was set up for children of law enforcement officers or students who intend to pursue a career in law enforcement or a related field. 2013-2014 Recipients: Christian Ivey, Clanton, Alabama Johnathan Poarch, Hueytown, Alabama Daniel Sanford, Northport, Alabama

The John Cook Nichols Endowed Scholarship, established from a bequest left to the college by Mr. Nichols, who passed away in 2006, is awarded to adult students pursuing a degree in programs facilitated through the College of Continuing Studies.

The Clarice L. Parker Memorial Endowed Scholarship, established by Mrs. Edna Ivey, of Homewood, Alabama, honors the memory of her late sister, Clarice L. Parker, and promotes the continuing education of deserving adult students pursuing a degree at The University of Alabama. Recipients must be 25 years of age or older and enroll in at least one course facilitated by the College of Continuing Studies.

2013-2014 Recipients: Julie Jones, Northport, Alabama Robin Taylor, Tuscaloosa, Alabama

The H. Harrison and Mary Lois Parrish Endowed Scholarship for Distance Learning, established by H. Harrison Parrish and Mary Lois Parrish of Dothan, Alabama, promotes the education of students pursuing their education through Distance Learning in the College of Continuing Studies at The University of Alabama. This scholarship will be awarded annually to undergraduate students who intend to major in nursing and who are enrolled in at least one credit course offered through distance education through the College of Continuing Studies. Priority will be given to students taking courses via video. The Douglas W. Patterson Memorial Endowed Scholarship, established by family members and friends, honors the memory of Douglas W. Patterson, promotes the education of deserving adult students, age 25 and older, and supports academic excellence within the College of Continuing Studies at The University of Alabama. 2013-2014 Recipient: Tammy Cantu-Perez, Cibolo, Texas 2014-2015 Recipient: Madison Hayes, Madison, Alabama

The William Henry Rhea Jr. Memorial Endowed Scholarship, established by the late Mr. and Mrs. Clarence F. Rhea and family, honors Mr. Rhea’s brother William Henry Rhea Jr., and promotes the education of students who are Alabama residents, 25 years of age or older, and demonstrate academic excellence. Preference is given to engineering or business majors who are taking courses offered through the College of Continuing Studies

2013-2014 Recipients: Shanganyika Hunt, Douglasville, Georgia Gregory Johnson, Crossett, Arkansas Luke Mitchell, Midland City, Alabama

The John H. Sellers Sr. Memorial Endowed Scholarship, established by Mr. John H. Sellers, Jr. and his wife Deborah of Birmingham, Alabama, in memory of John’s father is awarded to a undergraduate students in good academic standing. Priority will be given to Alabama high school graduates who were little brothers or little sisters affiliated with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Birmingham, Alabama. Secondary consideration will be given to those who participated with Big Brothers Big Sisters of other surrounding cities in the state of Alabama. Third consideration will be given to students enrolled in degree programs facilitated through the College of Continuing Studies. 2013-2014 Recipient: Danica Joseph, Hollywood, Florida

The Warrior Roofing – Thomas G. Shurett Endowed Scholarship, established by Mr. and Mrs. Duane Cunningham and Warrior Roofing Manufacturing, Inc., honors the memory of Thomas G. Shurett and promotes the education of deserving students who are Warrior Roofing employees or dependents of employees, or other deserving adult students from the West Alabama area.

Snider Endowed Scholarship, established by the Continuing Studies Board of Visitors in support of their friend, Dr. John Snider, former Dean of the College, supports undergraduate or graduate students in their education facilitated through Continuing Studies. Recipients must be 25 years of age or older and demonstrate satisfactory academic progress.

2014-2015 Recipient: Mary Cloud, Rainbow City, Alabama

The Tate Jordan Thomas and Mary Banks Strickland Memorial Endowed Scholarship, established by Cathy and Russell Thomas to honor the memory of Tate Jordan Thomas and Mary Banks Strickland and to promote the education of students in the College of Continuing Studies. Priority of consideration is given to students from the state of Alabama who are pursuing University of Alabama degrees facilitated by the College of Continuing Studies, possesses a minimum grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, and demonstrate financial need, although not necessarily need as defined by federal guidelines. 2013-2014 Recipient: Beverly Neal, Southside, Alabama

The Hershel Trimm Memorial Endowed Scholarship, established by Mrs. Doris Trimm Lewis, honors the memory of her late husband, Hershel Trimm, and promotes the continuing education of adult students, age 25 or older, pursuing a degree at The University of Alabama. This scholarship is renewable for four years as long as the student continues to meet academic standards. Preference is given to those desiring a career in the home-building industry. 2013-2014 Recipient: Latora Todd Jackson, Montgomery, Alabama 2014-2015 Recipient: Kathryn Trainor, Pelham, Alabama

The Robert L. Williamson Memorial Endowed Scholarship, established by John R. Williamson of Birmingham, Alabama, honors the memory of his father, Robert L. Williamson, and promotes the education of students majoring in business or engi-neering. Priority is given to students taking courses taught via video or other distance learning methods facilitated by The College of Continuing Studies.

The Bernard Osher Reentry Scholarship, established by the Bernard Osher Foundation, assists part-time and full-time undergraduate reentry students who are currently enrolled or accepted for admission to The University of Alabama in a traditional, campus-based degree program. Applicants must have experienced a cumulative gap in their education of five or more years prior to their readmission term, be pursuing their first baccalaureate degree, show academic promise and commitment to obtaining their degree, be 25 years or older and demonstrate financial need.
