San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks Game Notes

Sunday, November 26, 2017 Reid’s Big First Play

On the first play from scrimmage, S Eric Reid intercepted Seahawks QB Russell Wilson. It marked his 2nd INT of the season and 10th of his career.

The play marked the first time the 49ers registered an INT on the first defensive play of a game since CB Nate Clements picked off Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck on the first play of the 2010 season [at Sea. (9/12/10)].

Reid has now registered at least 1 INT against the Seahawks 3 times in his career. Jimmy G Throws A TD

On the final play from scrimmage, QB Jimmy Garoppolo tossed a 10-yd. TD pass to WR Louis Murphy. It marked the first TD pass of Garoppolo’s career with the 49ers, and his first since throwing 3 TDs vs. Mia. (9/18/16) as a member of the New England Patriots.

The TD recept. by Murphy was his first of the season, 11th of his career and first since 10/12/14 vs. Bal. as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan Press Conference – November 26, 2017

San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks How are the early indications on QB C.J. Beathard’s health? “They said they thought it might be a bruise, but we won’t know. It happened so late at the end that there’s not enough information yet, we’ll have to X-Ray tomorrow.” Is it his leg or--? “They said it was his lower leg. I think he got hit by a helmet or a shoulder pad. Not exactly sure yet. Being optimistic that it’s just a bruise though.” Those last 67 seconds then, just getting QB Jimmy Garoppolo in there, how did you think he did? “It was nice he got a touchdown. We got an off-schedule play, ran around and made a good play to [WR Louis Murphy] Murph and it’s nice to get in the end zone.” Long time to get the play, it looked like he almost didn’t get that first play. Was that a little nerve-racking to watch that? “Yeah, that’s just part of the process of how it is. It just takes a little bit longer when it’s new for him and did a good job. I thought I was going to have to call a timeout, but I didn’t have one, so I didn’t have a choice. So, I just watched and hoped and they did a good job. I think it was [TE Garrett] Celek, sprinting out to the final formation and getting the ball off.” That hit that Beathard took was his 13th or 14th of the game. That’s par for the course for him over the last few games. Does that factor into your decision making at all when you’re thinking about who the starting quarterback is going to be? “It all factors in. I want to give a guy a chance to be successful and we’ve got to do a better job of protecting him. I thought we did that verse New York. We were able to be in a game where we were able to be more balanced. Tried very hard to keep this game like that, but late in the second half it got a little bit out of hand. But, it was similar to that in the first half too. It’s a tough position to be in and you don’t want anyone to get hurt, but Jimmy will have another week. We’ll watch this tape tomorrow, work with him Monday and Tuesday and see what happens in practice for Wednesday.” It’s just three plays or however many, does that factor in to whether you’re going to start him? “No, those plays have nothing to do with anything. That’s just running around and made a great play, but those have no bearing on it at all.” Will Jimmy take the majority of the snaps with the first team on Wednesday or have you not decided? “I just said we’re going to watch the tape, see how guys feel. We’ll work with him Monday and Tuesday and then put a game plan together and see what we decide for Wednesday.”

Page 4: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS GAME NOTES · 2019-01-15 · San Francisco 49ers. vs. Seattle Seahawks Game Notes . Sunday, November . 26, 2017 . Reid’s Big First Play On the first play from

You ran the read option and pistol a little bit more today. Was that because of OL Trent Brown being out or--? “It has to do with a lot of things. Sometimes when you can do that stuff, if you’re going against the right schemes, it can slow people down a little bit. Not trying to make a living out of that stuff, but you try to give them other stuff to worry about. Make some other things a little bit easier. Sometimes it can help your protections. We got a few good looks of it today. We had a real unfortunate, I didn’t see it yet, but the clipping call. The early one in the game, I thought we had a good gain. We got that call back, but it just offset guys and help our players, give them a better chance to be successful.” QB Russell Wilson wasn’t sacked. Does that seem crazy based on the amount of times he was almost sacked? “Yeah, it does seem crazy because it seemed like we were around him a lot. That’s what he does very well though. He’s been doing in for a long time. That does surprise me. I thought we would have had more sacks, but from what I saw out there and we’ll see tomorrow after I talk to you guys after I get a better chance to watch the tape, but I thought our defense seemed to play very well. They gave us a chance to win this game, just like they did in Week 2 and it seemed like they were around him a lot, but as always Russell always makes some pretty good plays.” Was there any consideration of changing quarterbacks mid-game? You guys weren’t able to move offensively a lot and the defense, you just said, did give you a chance. Was there any consideration of going to Jimmy early? “No, not at all. If I felt that was because of the quarterback I would have made a change.” How would you say C.J. did today? “I’ll see with the tape. I know he definitely missed some, like all quarterbacks do in every game, but I don’t think he was in a situation that he had much of a chance to be real successful. They played three deep-four under the entire game. They didn’t play much man coverage. They were going to make us work for it all the way down the field and that’s what they did. We weren’t very good on third down and we didn’t get a run game going, which made it very hard verse that type of defense.” DL Sheldon Day and DL Cassius Marsh played a lot of snaps today for arriving just this last week. What did you see from those two guys? “When I looked up, I saw them getting around the ball. So, I couldn’t tell you honestly until I study the tape. I don’t just watch one guy, but it looked like they ran around. I saw them both make a couple plays, but I’ll be able to answer that a little better tomorrow.” WR Marquise Goodwin with his foot came back okay? “Yeah, I know he came back in the game. He had something with his foot, so they went in, took an X-Ray, it ended up being alright. Then he came back and finished the game, so I think that means it’s nothing big, but he had to get out a number of times throughout the end of the game. We’ll see how it is tomorrow.” What about RB Raheem Mostert?

Page 5: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS GAME NOTES · 2019-01-15 · San Francisco 49ers. vs. Seattle Seahawks Game Notes . Sunday, November . 26, 2017 . Reid’s Big First Play On the first play from

“Mostert was the only one that left. It is his (knee). He could not return. We’ll have some X-Rays or an MRI tomorrow to see.” What was your review of Carlos Hyde and the ineffective run game? “That’s something I’ll definitely have to see the tape because you have to see the end zone copy. They had an eight man front every time, so it’s not like there’s a bunch of wide open holes. We’ll see how it looked. I didn’t think that we gave a lot of space, but anytime you don’t run the ball very well that’s never one person. That’s all 11 out there. That has to do with the running back, the O-Line, receivers blocking and also not moving the chains on third down.” Beathard was taking so many hits and always gets up. Was it almost a shock to see him stay down on the ground? Did you almost have to double take to see that it was really him on the ground? “No, you just know he’s hurt and if that’s the case. If he can’t get up it’s because something is wrong. Got a lot of respect for how he plays. He has hung in there and he’s gotten better for us each week. Hoping it’s not as bad as it looked. I hope he’s better than it seems tomorrow.” Do you feel like he continued to improve today or did he take a step back? “No, the more guys play, the more they continue to improve. He didn’t make a bunch of mistakes out there. There weren’t too many opportunities. Any time a team plays three deep-four under the whole game, we had a couple opportunities. We had some explosive plays. I thought we got most of them. We were short on one from what I can remember. The turnover that he had, I thought was a hell of a play by I think it was [Seattle Seahawks LB Bobby] Wagner or it was [Seattle Seahawks LB] K.J. [Wright]. I think it was Wagner though. I was happy with C.J.” Did you give Jimmy any special instructions before going into the game? “No, I was out there with C.J. So, I know our quarterbacks coach Rich [Scangarello] was talking to him. They got my new call sheet ready, which wasn’t that big of a deal at that time because we were at the two-minute anyways. Once I got to the sideline, he was already out there.”

49ers QB C.J. Beathard Press Conference – November 26, 2017

San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks How are you feeling? “I’m feeling alright. Yeah, I’ll be alright.” What happened on the play, and where did you feel it? “I just had thrown the ball and a guy went into my knee. I just felt it up into my hip. That’s all I really remember from the play.” Which leg? “Left.”

Page 6: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS GAME NOTES · 2019-01-15 · San Francisco 49ers. vs. Seattle Seahawks Game Notes . Sunday, November . 26, 2017 . Reid’s Big First Play On the first play from

Did they say anything about when you would be able to play? “They didn’t tell. I’ll get an MRI tomorrow morning and really get some insight on what exactly it is. It may just be a bruise to the knee. You don’t know. I’m trying to get back out there as soon as possible. Obviously, I don’t think anything’s torn or anything like that. It doesn’t feel like it.” So, you believe it’s a knee injury and not a hip? “I don’t know. We’ll see tomorrow I guess.” Same old story, you were taking a lot of hits, under a lot of pressure. Did you think maybe some of those issues had been resolved based on what the New York Giants game looked like? “You’re always going to take hits as a quarterback, doesn’t matter who you’re playing for. Obviously, the guys that were in there did the best that they can do. [OL] Trent [Brown] was out for the game but we’ve just got to get better. All phases of the game: offense, defense, special teams, quarterback, running backs, o-line, everywhere. We just got to get better. That’s all we can do right now.” S Eric Reid said he was a little bit upset. He was out there with you. He was a little bit upset fans were cheering while you were still down. Another guy said it might’ve just been the excitement of maybe QB Jimmy Garoppolo getting to play for the first time. Did you hear any of that and do you have any reaction to that? “I didn’t. I was just focused on my knee and talking to the doctors. I wasn’t really focused on the fans or the crowd. So no, I didn’t hear any of that.” What did it mean to you to have S Eric Reid out there on the field? Have you guys came close? “Yeah. Me and E. Reid got a good relationship. He’s one of the leaders of this team. Especially the leader on defense. He’s a role model for a lot of guys. To have him out there having my back, it means the world to me. A lot of guys had my back throughout the whole thing. It’s just really cool to see that all the guys got your back.” You had a few running plays called for you today. Is that something you like to do? “Yeah. I like to do it, and I think I can run the ball. So, anytime we can mix some things up for defenses to have to think about another thing rather than just handing it off. They have to game plan for some zone-read stuff. I like doing it.” Would you like to do more of that? “Yeah. I would definitely say if I’m a hundred percent healthy, no doubt.” Played a little bit more out of the Pistol today as well. Did you do a lot of that during the week? “We did. We did a lot of that during the week. Did some straight hand-offs out of the Pistol. Some zone-read stuff, some play action out of the Pistol. That was more of a thing we did a lot of this week in practice.”

Page 7: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS GAME NOTES · 2019-01-15 · San Francisco 49ers. vs. Seattle Seahawks Game Notes . Sunday, November . 26, 2017 . Reid’s Big First Play On the first play from

Based off what you’ve seen in practice how comfortable does QB Jimmy Garoppolo seem with the offense? How much has he increased his mileage? “He’s definitely gotten smarter. It’s been however many weeks. He’s definitely gotten a better grasp of the offense since he’s gotten here. You’d have to ask him about that.”

49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo

Postgame Quotes – November 26, 2017 San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks

How did it feel being out there? “Whenever you lose, it’s always tough. So we’ll go look at the film, break everything down and go from there.” How did it feel to get your first touchdown in a 49er uniform? “It was cool. Like I said, tough situation being down at that point. We’ll move on from here.” Can you take us through the touchdown pass? “[49ers WR Louis Murphy] Murph made a great catch on it in the end zone. The offensive line gave me some time, I had to scramble a little bit and it was a nice play by everybody.” How was getting the plays transmitted with the wristband? How did that work? “We only had a couple chances at it, but for what it was, it was fine. Always a new experience. We’ve been working on it in practice and everything, so it’s a work in progress.” We’ve heard a lot about the playbook and how big it is. How is it compared to the Patriots’ for instance? “I’ve been saying this for the past couple weeks now, it’s like a different language. Similar concepts, but different names and everything. That’s part of being a quarterback. There are little things that people don’t see outside of the locker room. You need to master those things and I’m in a situation where you have to do it as fast as possible.” About how many words are in a play call in this offense? “It could vary. It could be five, six. It could be 20-something. Every play is different.” You guys always talk about how you have to be ready at the drop of a hat. At that point in the game with a minute left, are you still as engaged as you would be early in the game? “Oh yeah, that’s our job. We only get three to three-and-a-half hours every week once a week to come out here and perform, so for those three-and-a-half hours you’ve got to be as locked in as possible. It’s football, you’ve got to love coming out here. The result didn’t come the way we wanted today, but we’ll work and get better at it.” Does it help almost to go into that situation where you don’t really have time to think about anything and just go in and cut it loose a little? “There’s never an easy situation to go into, being the backup. I’ve experienced both ends of it. You always have to be ready. I’ve been saying it for the past four years. You never know when

Page 8: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS GAME NOTES · 2019-01-15 · San Francisco 49ers. vs. Seattle Seahawks Game Notes . Sunday, November . 26, 2017 . Reid’s Big First Play On the first play from

your time is going to come, if it’s going to come, so when it does you’ve got to take advantage of it.” When there are no time outs and you come into a situation like that when time is running out, the outcome of the game doesn’t depend on it, but was the right language coming into your head? “Yeah. Like I said, it’s a work in progress. I’m upset the ref didn’t give me the first down on that slide, I thought I had it. I guess it worked out. Little critiques here and there that I could get better, even in those first few plays.”

49ers DL Sheldon Day Postgame Quotes – November 26, 2017

Did you play more today than you played in Jacksonville? “I would say that I did. It felt like I did.” Does chasing around Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson make you feel like you’re getting more snaps than you really are? “No, not really. It makes you more determined to get him. You pin your ears back a little bit more and try to put more effort into it.” Did it feel good to continue to force him out of the pocket and to run around back there? “It felt pretty good, but you always want to come away with the sack. I just kept trying to work and kept rushing after him.” How challenging was it for you to come in this week and get so many snaps already? “It wasn’t challenging at all. It was a good experience for me. I would definitely say that I enjoyed every bit of it.” Did you take a lot of first team reps in practice this week? “I can’t even remember. Everything has been a whirlwind this week.” How was it playing against Wilson? “It’s pretty fun chasing him around. It’s like a cat-and-mouse game. You just keep on going until you get it.” There were so many near-sacks, but Wilson wasn’t sacked. Does that make you frustrated? “I wouldn’t call it frustrating. It makes you more determined. It makes you want to finish your rushes more. It makes you want to win earlier. It makes you more determined than anything.”

Page 9: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS GAME NOTES · 2019-01-15 · San Francisco 49ers. vs. Seattle Seahawks Game Notes . Sunday, November . 26, 2017 . Reid’s Big First Play On the first play from

49ers LB Reuben Foster Postgame Quotes – November 26, 2017

San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks

How did you feel about the overall defensive performance today? “We played hard, but we just have to go back to the drawing board. That’s just to play sound, hard defense. I’m not saying we didn’t play with all that we have. We played with everything that we have. I’m proud of the guys, but it’s just another setback for a major comeback.” There’s something about Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson. How was the first time that you’ve seen him up-close? “I knew he was an athletic guy. He’s an amazing guy. He’s shifty and he’s quick. God gave him that athleticism, so I can’t fault him for that. That’s just a God-given talent that’s in him. We just have to play sound defense and get after him more.” Are there things that you see against Wilson in person that you can’t prepare for on film? “He’s just a little guy. You just have to minimize the mistakes and the missed tackles, go after it and have that dog mentality in you. We just have to have no doubts on the field. I just know that we want to win, and we’ll still fight to win.” Was it disheartening when you had them in a third-and-long and then the next thing you know they’re moving the chains? “It’s crazy, but that’s him [Wilson]. We wanted to stop him on third down. He has great wide receivers and great running backs.” You got the start you wanted with the interception on the first play. Did you feel great after that? “It felt amazing. We came out with the right mindset. We just have to keep it up and be consistent.” What things does this defense need to work on after what you’re seeing week in and week out? “Consistency. Just having a dog-savaged tenacity and rage. We just need to have that, and we do have that. We don’t give up. We have everything in the book that you want to call it, but it’s just a fact that we just need to keep dialing in and don’t give up. The coaches know that we’re working hard every week and every day. We just have to keep pushing.”

49ers DL Cassius Marsh

Postgame Quotes – November 26, 2017 San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks

Did you expect to play that much today? “I don’t know, I just came in prepared to play. I wanted to play that much. I don’t want to come off the field. I’m that type of player. I’m thankful for my opportunities.”

Page 10: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS GAME NOTES · 2019-01-15 · San Francisco 49ers. vs. Seattle Seahawks Game Notes . Sunday, November . 26, 2017 . Reid’s Big First Play On the first play from

Did this require a lot of cramming for you or because you’ve been in Seattle’s scheme, this was relatively easy to get ready for? “Pretty smooth. It’s a pretty similar defense. Call-wise, the linguistics are a little bit different. I could definitely be better, a couple mistakes out there, but it was a pretty easy transition for me.” What was it like playing against Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson in a real game? “Russell is probably the most elusive player in the league. He makes the money he makes for a reason. He’s proven and he had a good game today. You’ve got to take your hat off to him. He’s a great player.” How challenging is it to go against your former team? “I was excited to go against my former team. I was excited to be a part of the 49ers and go out there, play, learn to play with these guys. I was ecstatic to go out there today. I’m really hurt that we didn’t get the win, but it’s all part of the process. You’ve got to trust the process, come in tomorrow, get back to the grind and look forward to Chicago.”

49ers WR Louis Murphy

Postgame Quotes – November 26, 2017 San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks

Can you walk us through that touchdown play? “It was the end of the game. We were in a two minute pace and I ran a slant. [San Francisco 49ers QB] Jimmy [Garoppolo] stayed alive, I tried to stay alive on my slant and kept coming across and he threw up a great ball and I came down with it.” He is known for having such a quick release. It didn’t seem to be a lot of space there but it still got to you. Were you struck by how quickly it got to your hands at all? “Yes. I have been noticing that all week and for the last two or three weeks in practice, how quick the ball comes out of his hands and how he stays alive too. The O-line did a great job blocking, coach called a good play and we just executed.” You stuck around during the Bye and worked with him. Do you feel like you have a good rapport with him going on? “Yes I do have a good rapport going on with him, especially being there that extra week and working with him. It was really good for the both of us. I am just excited to see what happens.” Were you in the huddle for that first play? It seemed to take a while. “Yes I was in there. You heard the crowd begin to cheer him on and that was kind of cool, and him saying ‘All right fellas, here we go.’ He just took command of the huddle like a leader does and everyone else followed.”

Page 11: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS GAME NOTES · 2019-01-15 · San Francisco 49ers. vs. Seattle Seahawks Game Notes . Sunday, November . 26, 2017 . Reid’s Big First Play On the first play from

49ers S Eric Reid Postgame Quotes – November 26, 2017

San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks In the first half you guys were doing what you wanted to do against Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson. You had the interception on the first play. How do you feel about the way you guys tried to slow him down in the first half? “I think in the first half we played well. We were able to execute. They were doing what we thought that they would do as far as the game plan went. We just needed another turnover. We always need one more opportunity to give our offense the ball but we weren’t able to get it.” How deflating is it that they come out in the second half and score back-to-back touchdowns, especially with Wilson escaping from the pocket like that doing what he does? “He is the best in the league at that. You start the play off in good coverage and then it turns into a second play because he is able to get away from the pass rush. That is why he is a great quarterback. We just have to do a better job of sticking on the receivers and getting him down when he is scrambling.” Is it more frustrating for a defense when he does make those plays and escapes the pocket, the rush and able to get a first down? “It is really frustrating. In the secondary there is a clock in your head where you know the ball should be thrown and when it is not thrown you expect there to be a sack. He is the best at that. His pocket presence is 100. That is why he is one of the greats at avoiding getting sacked. I give him props, but we have to do a better job at getting him down.”

49ers T Joe Staley Postgame Quotes – November 26, 2017

San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks

How do you think it will be to learn the offense conceptually given the background about what 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo is going through? “That’s apples and oranges, quarterback and offensive line. They are completely different, can’t compare it. He’s got to learn what every single person is doing on every single play. I’ve got to learn what a left tackle does. That’s for every position. Quarterback is the hardest position by far to learn.” How do you think Jimmy is doing? “Really good. He’s a smart, bright guy. He’s picking it up really, really well. I think he’s doing really well.” How’s your knee? “It’s good, just hyperextended.”

Page 12: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS GAME NOTES · 2019-01-15 · San Francisco 49ers. vs. Seattle Seahawks Game Notes . Sunday, November . 26, 2017 . Reid’s Big First Play On the first play from

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said that when you struggled to run the ball, it’s an all 11 guys kind of thing. What can you guys do on that aspect of the offense? “Running the ball is a lot more than just running the ball for four or five yards per carry every single time. It’s about staying on the field. We didn’t do nearly a good enough job on third downs like we did two weeks ago. I think we were 70% or something like against the Giants and we weren’t anywhere near that today. So when you’re not moving the chains, not staying on the field, you don’t get the opportunities to break a big run. Running game average as far as looking at numbers, I think we were 3.5 yards per carry today. We didn’t break any big runs because we weren’t on the field long enough and stay within our offense. It takes all 11, that’s what he kind of means by that. It takes everybody making plays and the passing game to be able to get the running game going and being able to stick with our offense. We’ve got to execute better all-around.” Did you get the sense that you were shooting yourself in the foot on first down situations and creating long yardage situations? “We definitely talked about that coming into halftime. We have to do a much better job on first and second down, especially just staying on schedule. We were kind of creating some long situations on second down and third down. Especially against that defense, you can’t do that. You’ve got to play your best game against those guys. Tip your hats to them, they played better than we did today.” You came off the field with your arm around San Francisco 49ers QB C.J. Beathard. What did you say to him? “Just seeing how he was. Just checking in and seeing if he knew anything. Keep his head up and all of that stuff. C.J. is a guy that lays it on the line for us every single week. We’ve got to do a better job obviously. He’s getting hit out there a lot more than he was two weeks ago. He’s tough. I know the kind of guy he is and the character he has. He’s a guy that we all kind of rally around.” Does that earn him a lot of respect, especially around the offensive line? “Yeah, I mean you don’t want to have that happen obviously, but a guy showing his toughness and being able to play through some stuff and not complain about whatever. He’s ready to go, next play. He definitely has a lot of guys’ respect.” What were those last few plays like with Jimmy Garoppolo coming in? “We were just trying to finish off the drive. Didn’t think too much, we had two play calls. Just worried about blocking [Seattle Seahawks DE] Frank Clark.”

Postgame Quotes – November 26, 2017 San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks

How was it coming back and playing? “It was great coming back. Miss the game. Two weeks and a bye week. Miss playing with my teammates. I’ve got to improve and get better for next week.”

Page 13: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS GAME NOTES · 2019-01-15 · San Francisco 49ers. vs. Seattle Seahawks Game Notes . Sunday, November . 26, 2017 . Reid’s Big First Play On the first play from

Have you been concentrating more on pass rushing here at the last part of the season or just everything? “Just everything. Run game, pass rush, mental aspect. Just trying to be the player I can be for my teammates.” How’s the learning process going and how big is this playbook on the defensive side? “It’s nothing too much or that we can’t handle. We all know what our job is, it’s just more of us getting comfortable in that spot and not thinking, just going. That’s what the plan is right now.” Where are you in that process? “Just coming along. Each week getting better and better.”

Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carroll Press Conference – November 26, 2017

San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks Opening comments: “Good solid win on the road. This good in the Division on the road, we got it done. We start with a pick and then [Seattle Seahawks QB] Russell [Wilson] comes back and has a good football game. I think the game was kind of marred by the drops. We had those uncharacteristic drops for us. I think we missed, might have missed about four or five balls today. Other than that, I think we would have had a really solid game of continuity and all that. There’s no real excuse other than you know, the wind was blowing a little bit early in the game but we should have done much better there. Good solid game for the defense and the kicking game was real solid. We did what we needed to do. Unfortunately, we missed a field goal early, but the rest was solid, and getting rid of some of those penalties was really helpful for us. Just a lot of guys played really solid. What I was really excited about is we were banged up going into this game. [Seattle Seahawks T] Duane Brown couldn’t practice all week. [Seattle Seahawks G/T Luke] Joeck [Joeckel] was just coming back first time. [Seattle Seahawks LB] Bobby Wagner couldn’t practice all week. Then these guys just stuck it out and did a really good job to come through and play football like we needed them to, and gave us a chance to win a football game. And those guys all seem to come out okay too, so we can take a step forward hopefully.” Did you get a chance to see Bobby’s interception, the replay of it? “Kind of, yeah. I saw it on the big board. That was all I could see. It was an extraordinary play. I don’t know how that could happen, really. But, a really great heads up play and all that, and we scored on it too.” He’s up to 100 tackles now this season for six straight years. The season he’s having--? “Yeah, it’s fantastic. He’s an incredible player. He did not practice this week. He was able to only workout with the trainers a little bit and to come through that and have another big game, a significant game, a play of the game for the defense, it’s just the way he’s been doing it. He’s a great football player and he has demonstrated extraordinary consistency, and when you’re giving him another hundred tackle season it’s amazing. I understand [Seattle Seahawks TE] Jimmy [Graham] had some numbers today too that separates him. There was a record

Page 14: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS GAME NOTES · 2019-01-15 · San Francisco 49ers. vs. Seattle Seahawks Game Notes . Sunday, November . 26, 2017 . Reid’s Big First Play On the first play from

touchdowns for his career and also for a season, and you know he’s got a lot of games left. So, he’s doing a great job for us.” With the second half, what changed for Russell? “We were able to, we didn’t drop the football like we did in the first half. I think it was really, I think Russell was going to have a terrific game. The first play got away from him, but I really think it’s that. I don’t think it’s much more than that. He had a great second half has done it all along, and I think he would have done that the first half if we just hung onto the football.” How savvy of a play was that by Wagner or--? “Yeah, I don’t even know how he did it. You know, yeah it’s an extraordinary play. You just don’t see stuff like that happen, but he’s a remarkable athlete. Timing, hand-eye, all that kind of stuff, he’s a remarkable athlete. So, he figured out a way to do it like a few guys would do.” Seemed like you were getting a lot of different guys involved in the pass rush, I mean, Seattle Seahawks DE Quinton Jefferson--? “You know, we had a bunch of guys active today, which was one thing. So, we got a big rotation and we kind of did well, and it was great to get the play time. [Seattle Seahawks DE Michael] Mike [Bennett] came through with a big game again. [Seattle Seahawks DE] Branden [Jackson] had a nice game rushing, [Seattle Seahawks DE] Marcus Smith, beautiful to see those guys contributing like that. And it’s how we would like to do it, where we mix those guys up, keep it fresh, keep it fast.” What has Seattle Seahawks WR Paul Richardson shown you this year? “He’s had a terrific season for us. Today was not his day. You know, for anyway, he could have had a huge day today, but just for whatever reason he was trying to sure catch the ball a little bit, because of the weather. And uncharacteristically, didn’t use his hands like he would normally and just I think overcompensated. But, he’s had a terrific football season, explosive plays, dynamic plays, come through down the field stuff, and spectacular stuff. And unfortunately, today just wasn’t his best.” When Jimmy Graham gets in the red zone, are you seeing teams sort of take away things that you guys have shown success going to him in the red zone in the past, and is that opening up new opportunities? “They’re trying their stuff and it just depends. We’re so much better at utilizing him as part of the offense. You know, take what they’re giving us and he’s doing a great job coming to but again, the chemistry between him and Russ has reached a level that makes them really on top of their game. So, we’ll keep going. We have to react to the things that they’re giving us and they’ll be more creative. Those numbers are pretty good and they’re going to want to do more stuff from them I would think.” Keeping San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde to 47 yards after the--? “Yeah, I thought the run defense was excellent. I thought all day long it was really good and really solid, and the kind of consistency that we hope to get. We like this team. These guys know how to run the football, they know how to move around, they have a good offensive scheme that challenges us and we had to work our way through, and I think the guys did a

Page 15: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS GAME NOTES · 2019-01-15 · San Francisco 49ers. vs. Seattle Seahawks Game Notes . Sunday, November . 26, 2017 . Reid’s Big First Play On the first play from

good job. I go back to those guys aren’t able to practice too. I mean, it’s a huge deal for Bobby not to get those looks all week long. He just couldn’t do it and those guys came through.” What do you make of the season that Bobby’s having? “I think it’s as good as a defensive player can have. I think he’s on top of everything. He’s great in the running game. He’s great in the pass game. He’s a fantastic rusher. He’s as good as you could hope for. He’s having a great season.” Seattle Seahawks TE Nick Vannett kind of coming through the way he did today, just having to step in when Seattle Seahawks TE Luke Willson got hurt and all of that--? “Yeah, he took over for Luke. He did a nice job, a great touchdown catch for him and his first one ever, which was great. Luke’s got to hang onto the ball too. You know, a couple balls got away from him. I’ll check on Nick and both work a couple times but, he’s doing a really good job. We can use him in all situations and he’s got terrific versatility for us. And really he’s able to contribute amongst that.” The play that Seattle Seahawks WR Doug Baldwin made on the third-and-nine that kind of jump started that, did you feel like--? “Yeah, I really thought that was the play that kind of turned things. You know, we were, that sequence didn’t turn out great and you know, Russell was moving around again and he found him, and those two guys hooked up with a beautiful play. It really, that really was the spark in this game. And so, he definitely gave the ball up today but he made a key play that really kind of turned everything around for us.” During the play he was given the underthrown ball in the end zone and was that just his smarts--? “Yeah, I was thrilled about that. That decision that he made right there, because it’s something, there is an opportunity to make the decision how he made that attempt, which puts you in position to get the penalty and he did it exactly how you were supposed to do it. They made the right call and that’s a huge play, but it’s a very savvy play to do that. And he could feel he wasn’t in a good chance to get the ball and went up and put himself in a position to try, and that’s when the guy interfered.” Is Sheldon Richardson okay? “Yeah, yeah. He was just mad he didn’t get credit for a sack.” Seattle Seahawks RB Eddie Lacy, what did you think of his day and sort of--? “He ran hard. He ran tough. I liked it and that’s the first time we’ve had a chance to feel Eddie. We gave him two out of the game. You can see he’s got a presence about him, because he is such a load and just give us a dimension that we can play off of and we’ll go for it. And I thought he showed that today. And I think you saw the contrast in he and [Seattle Seahawks RB] J.D. [McKissic]. J.D. is just such a lightning rod out there for stuff he’s just so quick and explosive, and it’s a nice mix. So, that felt like we got something going there. So, it’s time. We’ve been waiting and hopefully we can go by that. We’ll get [Seattle Seahawks RB] Mike Davis back next week too, which will be fun to see.”

Page 16: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS GAME NOTES · 2019-01-15 · San Francisco 49ers. vs. Seattle Seahawks Game Notes . Sunday, November . 26, 2017 . Reid’s Big First Play On the first play from

Good to see the penalty numbers down a little bit? “Thirty-five yards in penalties. That’s way better than we get. Yeah, I’m probably over the top more than I should be for getting such stiff penalties, but for us that’s way better. And significant penalties didn’t show up, you know all much smaller stuff, which really we can do a lot better.” Do you know any more on Luke yet, just--? “Yeah, he’ll be in the protocol, getting hit in the head, but he was loose and he was in good shape. So, there’s a real chance that he could make it but we’ll see. We’ve got to take care of him first and foremost, and the trainers did a great job with him today.” Seattle Seahawks LB Josh Forrest, what happened to him? “He sprained his foot fairly significantly, and it’s going to be a problem for him.”

Seahawks QB Russell Wilson Press Conference – November 26, 2017

San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks On the first possession of the third quarter, where Seahawks WR Doug Baldwin kind of reached back and caught it to convert that, Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said that kind of got you jump started. “Yeah it was, Doug Baldwin did great on that play. I mean, he really did a good job scrambling, getting open. He had a great, great catch that was really the momentum starter for us there in the third quarter and made some key plays there.” What was the difference for the offense in the second half? “Well we got our tempo going. We were kind of off rhythm there in the first half and we found our rhythm. We made some plays. We made some third downs. We stayed on the field. It’s really that simple. It really comes down to third downs, staying on the field, making some key plays, key catches, and no mistakes. We did a great job of doing that today.” What was your thought process at half time sort of getting into that rhythm? “Well we kind of discussed that. I told the guys in the third quarter, ‘We have to know who we are, continue to know who we are. Have great confidence because we are a championship kind of a football team and we have proven that many of times. So, have no fear don’t, doubt anything that we are doing. Just believe in that.’ We were able to do that there in the third and fourth quarter. We had a great second half. Defense did a great job all day. Made some really key plays. Got some touchdowns there. I think [Seattle Seahawks TE] Nick Vannett scored his first touchdown in the National Football League, so that’s pretty exciting. It’s always a huge thing to see a guy score his first touchdown in the National Football League and then to see [Seattle Seahawks TE] Jimmy Graham score too as well that was pretty awesome.” Going to Nick there was that play designed for him or did he just break open? “Yeah, it was really kind of designed for whoever got open there and Nick did a great job of slipping open. He had a great catch. He has phenomenal hands. He is a big time player for us.

Page 17: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS GAME NOTES · 2019-01-15 · San Francisco 49ers. vs. Seattle Seahawks Game Notes . Sunday, November . 26, 2017 . Reid’s Big First Play On the first play from

He’s having a great year so far. He’s doing all the right things and sure enough he got his first touchdown, which is a big deal.” When you tell them not to doubt, what’s the source of the inconsistency in the first half? “What’s the source of it? Well, I wish it was that easy. Wish it was that easy to just figure everything out. That’s why you play the game. They got good players of there too that can do some great things. We made our plays in the second half. I think it’s really that simple, just the thought process. When something doesn’t go right, great teams always respond and we were able to do that today. We were able to respond and keep fighting, and keep swinging, and keep making our plays. I thought the offensive line did a great job today too as well. Getting a lot of good time, away with the scramble, was able to make some great plays. Did things quickly too. Were able to get some big shots down the field there in the second half as well. We just kept coming up big. [Seattle Seahawks WR] Tanner McEvoy made a couple big catches today too, as well. There are so many guys that got their hands on the football and made some things happen.” The way you’re getting it to Jimmy right now, he kind of set some records today, I mean it’s really obvious this last month he is really coming together. Talk about that and why it’s working so well? “I think Jimmy Graham is playing phenomenal football. He is one of the best tight ends to ever play the game. I have to find ways to get him the football. It’s not just him, it’s everybody, but I think that he really stands out. He can do some special things. Obviously, he’s a big body that can really catch, can really run. He’s an exciting player. He’s worked so hard, I mean this offseason we had so much work and did so many things, and talked and just continued to develop our game. I think it’s really paying off now. I think it’s a lot of guys that’s really paying off now [Seattle Seahawks WR] Paul Richardson, Doug Baldwin, [Seattle Seahawks WR] Tyler Lockett, those guys. They always put in work and great things happen when you do that.” Besides the work, why now? The last couple games for you and him? “Well, I think you know the first year was trying to find a rhythm there and then I think he got injured his second year, I believe it was. All the years kind of combine. But, he got injured there and he was having a great year. Now he’s really healthy, feeling really good, really confident. I’m feeling really great confidence in him and what he’s doing. Just giving him chances and making plays. He’s a special, special player. One of a kind, unique talent and we love having him and making plays with him. Jimmy Graham is best in the business when it comes to catching the football and being a great tight end.” On the first pass that was intercepted, were you still trying to get a gauge of the wind? “Yeah, I was trying to put it down in front and he made a good play. The wind slowed it down a little bit. I think we were going into it. I think that sometimes you swing and strike out the first at bat and you just keep coming back and keep swinging. I’m never one to stress or worry. I just keep believing in what we’re doing and how we are going to do. That’s on me and can be a little sharper. The great thing was that the defense stopped them right there. They didn’t get anything out of it. We were able to come back and find ways to make plays, especially in the second half.”

Page 18: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS GAME NOTES · 2019-01-15 · San Francisco 49ers. vs. Seattle Seahawks Game Notes . Sunday, November . 26, 2017 . Reid’s Big First Play On the first play from

How was that interception Seahawks LB Bobby Wagner had? “Yeah, I mean Bobby Wagner is the best in the business at what he does. He’s been here years upon years. Him making that clutch play right there, getting us the ball back, me being able to scamper into the end zone, was a great call that was awesome. Guys made some great blocks and we were able to just go into the end zone. That gave us the lead and got us some great momentum and got things going.” Talking about Jimmy and clicking with him, was there a moment in the offseason when you were working you thought this is working really nicely? “It’s funny because every offseason we get together. We all get together and work, and work, and work. This offseason we all did that once again together. What was cool this offseason too, I also got some really cool individual time with a lot of them too, from Paul to Doug to Nick Vannett to different guys to [Seattle Seahawks TE] Luke Willson. We had all that one-on-one time as well and guys just really were dying to work, and Jimmy was one of those guys. He came out for a week-and-a-half or however long it was and got just work, just me and him really. Just throwing, throwing, throwing, and then we all got back together. So I think all that time and then this training camp, how much work he’s put into it and how much love and passion he has put into the game. He is a great football player, so we’re giving a guy who can really shoot a chance to shoot, and he’s making those shots.”

Seahawks WR Doug Baldwin Postgame Quotes – November 26, 2017

San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks

As a receiver what adjustments have to be made in order to get a win like this? “Honestly, the win was strong. We’ve faced stronger wins, and more difficult wins before. I didn’t think it was going to be an issue.” Of what we saw in the first half what was the defensive struggle? Is just going up against a divisional opponent? “Some of it is set that way. We had our struggles in the first half. I don’t know what it is. Maybe we got to calm our jitters down or maybe were overly excited, and needed to get to the groove. Once we found our groove, we continued to play well.” Does it matter as long as you can do what you do in the third, fourth quarter. “Yeah, I guess so. Luckily we got a really great defense that can keep us in the game early, so things don’t get out of control. We don’t want to play like that. Obviously, we want to come out the gates and play well offensively. We’ve still got some improvements to make.” Seattle Seahawks LB Bobby Wagner’s interception. He said, he wanted it more than the receiver. How do you rate his interception on the ball? “It was impressive, extremely impressive, but it’s to be expected from a guy like Bobby. He makes plays all over the field, on the run game, and passing game, so no surprise there.”

Seahawks DE Michael Bennett Postgame Quotes – November 26, 2017

San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks Is it good to see so many different guys getting involved in the pass rush today? “When you lose a guy like [Seattle Seahawks DE] Cliff Avril, it is hard to get there. It takes three people to equal one of him when it comes to rushing the passer. You get all of these young guys in and they try to fill that void of what we were missing. It is going to take a little time to get these guys going like that this. You go from having a ten-year veteran, to have young guys rush. We are just doing the best we can.” With the secondary the way it is, do you guys up front feel it is more on you now? “You can’t feel like that. When you start to think to overdo things you start to do too much. That is when you have a lot of issues in the game. We trust our guys out there. We believe that anybody that is back there is a great-caliber player.” You are thick in the hunt for the playoffs and some big games up ahead. What is the message to the younger guys that are looking for big things? “I think stay the course, keep things steady. Let’s be together this next part of the season. Stay on the grind. We are going to play a lot of tough games. We have to be good on special teams, good on defense, and good on offense. That is the key.” Is this just one of those games where you just had to wear them down a little bit? “When you play against your division opponents the games are never easy, because you play each other so much. This is a heated rivalry. That is a really good team.”

Seahawks WR Paul Richardson Postgame Quotes – November 26, 2017

San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks Seattle Seahawks WR Doug Baldwin said he doesn’t really pay attention to the weather coming out, but in the first quarter it looked like it was tough to connect with Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson, just with the gusts of wind. “Yes, it really didn’t have to do with weather. We just needed to get on the same page. I felt like we did a really good job of pulling ourselves together and making it work.” Is any of that a surprise because against the Atlanta Falcons on Monday night, you guys were moving the down the field without any problem? “Sometimes you have to make an adjustment. It is really up to the players when that adjustment is successful because we are the ones on the field. When we did make the adjustment that was needed we were very successful.” When was that adjustment? It looked like maybe in the third quarter. “We made some adjustments before half time. Then at halftime we came in and cleaned it up. Then we got the ball rolling pretty good in the third quarter.”

Seahawks FS Earl Thomas Postgame Quotes – November 26, 2017

San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks

What did you think of Seattle Seahawks LB Bobby Wagner’s interception? “I thought it was great. He took the ball off his hands. He was a smaller guy and he booted the ball off his hands. I thought he scored.” How much fun is it watching Bobby doing this season? What a season so far. “He’s having a great season so far. It stems from how connected we are. If we don’t stay connected he doesn’t make those plays, so he’s playing great football. He’s communicating really well. When you’re in the middle of things you’re going to always be around the ball. He does a great job playing from sideline to sideline. He has DB-like instincts getting the ball, and he showed it today.” What do you mean by staying connected.? “We taught him strength. If you look at the scheme, how everyone moves, we all move as one.” How are you feeling out there? “Thoroughly good. Glad to be out there, but glad we got the win most importantly.”

Seahawks TE Nick Vannett

Postgame Quotes – November 26, 2017 San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks

You mentioned Seattle Seahawks TE Luke Willson’s injury. How much has it changed your responsibilities in the game? “It’s changed a lot. We always split reps. Since he’s out, I have to take all his reps now. I play way more than I used to, which is good for me since I have the experience. I hope he’s doing alright. I think it was a minor headache, but I was happy to be able to step up, and contribute to this team. That’s my main goal.” In the first half what was it that the offense was trying to find? “We always try to establish the run game, and it wasn’t really working out in the first half. We weren’t really buying pressure for [Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson] Russ back there. He was scrambling a lot. We came here, made some adjustments, went out, and started exposing our defense. We really got into our groove. We just figured how to start that way we’d be a more effective football team.” To see Eddie rip off a run of eleven yards. To get some of those yards. How does that give everyone confidence? “He’s just a tough runner. He just going to run straight north, and south. When you see a guy at running back who’s going to hurdle for those extra yards. It gives the offensive line, tight ends a little more know to block for him. That’s how all these running backs are there very

physical they try to get as many yards as they can. It was a great win, but we got to got to keep on pushing.”

Seahawks LB Bobby Wagner Postgame Quotes – November 26, 2017

San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks Take us through the interception, what you saw, and how that all happened? “I just saw 81 [San Francisco 49ers WR Trent Taylor] he tried to set it down, when they threw the ball he didn’t have much control, so I just took it away. I was hoping to get a touchdown, but they called it back.” Did it feel like in the game that the defense needed to make a spark to get it going? “Most definitely. We felt like the offense needed a little bit of help. We felt like a turnover or something at that moment in the game would be big for us. It was, we got the turnover, then [Seattle QB Russell Wilson] Russ went down to score. I felt like we controlled the game from there.” How hard is it to go from not practicing all week to getting into a game? “It is pretty hard. You have to make sure you focus. You have to watch all the film. You don’t get to see the reps and see how the guys are playing in front of you. When you have been doing it for a minute you get the handle of it. I played well and I didn’t practice, so you may want to tell [Seattle Seahawks Head Coach] Pete [Carroll] that.” With all the injuries on the defense, do you feel like it is coming together with all the new guys? Do you feel like everyone is gelling? ”I definitely feel like the team is gelling. I feel like the guys that are getting the opportunity to step in for injured players are getting more experience, more chances to understand the defense and understand how we play the game. I feel like the more reps they get the more opportunities they get to play with one another and learn each other and get better each week.”

Seahawks LB K.J. Wright

Postgame Quotes – November 26, 2017 San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks

Did the San Francisco 49ers come out faster or did they make some adjustments when they came out in the beginning of the third quarter? “Yes, their tempo was a little faster. They ran a few of the quarterback runs, so they definitely came out in the third quarter blazing a little bit. We thankfully were able to hold them to a field goal. The first unit did not give up a touchdown today.” What does that say about where the run defense is, that you guys were able to make that adjustment just as quick as they did? “It is great. Every time we talk about when they have a play that gets five yards or more, we talk about what happened out there on the football field. It is great that we have that

Page 22: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS GAME NOTES · 2019-01-15 · San Francisco 49ers. vs. Seattle Seahawks Game Notes . Sunday, November . 26, 2017 . Reid’s Big First Play On the first play from

communication and trust each other. It is just great we can make that adjustment on the fly like the way we did.” Is there anything Seattle Seahawks LB Bobby Wagner does that surprises you anymore? “He is on fire. That play that he made on 81 [San Francisco 49ers WR Trent Taylor], I have never seen an interception like that. For him not to practice all week and come out there and have the game that he did, it was just extraordinary.” What was it about that interception that made it so special? “He is just the man. We always preach about going for the ball. He just went after it and tried to get to the receiver and rip the ball out, and it just so happened to fall in his hands to get the interception.”
