NEW CLUB DEVELOPMENT

Wow, I have survived my first month as President! It’s all about celebrating the positives no matter how small and what a fantastic month it has been, as a club we have been so busy. DG Melodie and PDG John’s visit on 13 July was a wonderful way for me to jump in the deep end, so to speak and chair my first meeting. More importantly, we were able to experience first-hand DG Melodie’s objectives for our district and as a club we were able to share some of our local ideas and projects for the coming year. I personally was thrilled to say that my bell ringing skills had definitely improved by the end of the meeting. Thank you to Esther for chairing the meetings while I have been away; I am looking forward to a speedy recovery and getting back to the meetings soon. Well done to all of the members that attended the Bunnings’ Sausage Sizzle on 19 July, it looks like approximately $800 was raised, what a phenomenal effort! I would like to give a special mention to Debra who has hit the ground running in the Community Service Directorship, not only did she stay all day at the sausage sizzle but organised a great turnout of the club for Tree Planting for Kalgoorlie–Boulder Land Care Group (KBULG) community tree planting day on 26 July where the community planted approximately 2500 plants in South Kalgoorlie. KBULG CEO, Kim, was extremely happy with the turnout and in record time too. It was great to see AG Geraldine and her grand-daughter Mia and our own club mascot Sophie who was keeping Grandad Ross on track with the shovel. I know that all of the Directors are working on their plans and projects for the coming year as we redevelop our Club plan for 2015-2016. Kelsey and Esther have completed the interviews for the candidates for the Leeuwin Experience in December; a huge job as there was a fantastic response.

Well come back to Angelo and Ross from your holidays, I am sure you both had a lovely time away and had a few adventures which I am sure we are all looking forward to hearing about at fellowship. Finally, we sadly said goodbye to member, Stephen Harper, who is leaving Kalgoorlie for Bathurst, NSW with his job with Sita. Stephen has been a fabulous member and both Rotary and the community will miss him very much. We wish him all the best with his move and new job and look forward to hearing which

13 years in the making, and lived up to the hype! Supporters from around the world flew to Arusha in June to celebrate The School of St Jude’s first ever Form 6 graduation. The milestone event saw the 61 students, proudly draped in gowns of navy blue and canary yellow and wearing matching mortarboard hats, complete their secondary schooling. More than 500 local family and community members, special guests, fellow students and school staff attended the event at the school’s Smith campus at Usa River. “I am so proud of these students and what they have accomplished,” school founder Gemma Sisia said. “This is a very special time for both them and the whole St Jude’s community.” Special guest, Deputy Education Minister, Anne Kilango Malecela expressed her high expectations for the students, and wished them well in their future pursuits. The ceremony featured cultural songs and dances, as well as special “gifts” of chickens and a goat to various honourees. The School of St Jude’s opened 13 years ago with just three students, and now almost 2000 of Arusha’s most promising and underprivileged pupils receive a free education there. Each year the school accepts 150 new pupils, who are tested and screened to see if they pass St Jude’s education and poverty tests before receiving a free education. The school will continue to support the students in the coming year as they embark on community service, with the majority volunteering to teach at government schools around Arusha.

Avenues of Service Membership

Like all of our new board members, I am keen to get involved and help ensure our Club continues to make a difference in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Of course to keep our club going, and to make sure we are relevant, we need new members BUT that will not be the only focus this year. We have a wealth of knowledge and skills in our club and we can all learn from each other, so I am proposing that the focus for membership will be GROWTH – growth of our club and the personal growth of our members. There are a number of ways we can expand our membership, but focusing on the following might serve us better in these tough times in our region. With this in mind I would like to form a membership advisory group so that we can look at:

• making sure we a relevant to our region

• suggestions on special interest groups we can support

• working with related groups

• joint membership drives with the other clubs – perhaps a joint dinner

• appropriate advertising – contact with local radio and of course promoting our web and Facebook pages

• perhaps a hiatus or abolishment of joining fees? I am looking for folks to volunteer and meeting 30 minutes before our meeting for the next few weeks with a view to developing a plan. Finally it would really help us focus if you could answer the following three questions:

1. What did you think Rotary was about before you joined? 2. Is it still the same? What has changed (if it has)? 3. What would you say if someone said “Why should I become a Rotarian?”

Please email me your responses – [email protected]

District News A message from 2015-16 DG Melodie Kevan Rotary is about connecting with people in Australia, and all around the world while enjoying what we do best, and that is developing good programs in support of vital projects, and volunteering our expertise to achieve amazing outcomes. We run our Rotary District 9465, based in southern Western Australia, along similar principles to the way we run our businesses by providing the best possible management support to our Clubs, and this enables us to grow a stronger Rotary network and achieve greater good in the world. Rotary International is the world's first service club organization, with more than 1.2 million members in 33,000 clubs worldwide. We are neighbours, community leaders, and global citizens uniting for the common good. With you, we can accomplish even more. We welcome expressions of interest from members of the community who would like to join us in these endeavours.

Club rakes in cash for mental illness bid A group of men are riding a lawnmower across the country to raise awareness of mental illness. Since 2012 the Rotary Club of Armadale have driven a souped-up Hustler mower around the country each year taking on a new challenge. The trip began last month in Junee NSW, with the team travelling 5100km to Darwin, stopping in towns along the way. It was a slow-moving journey for the Ride to the Other Side crew with the lawnmower averaging 26km/h and travelling about 230km a day. Ride leader, Craig Alford, said the Ride to the Other Side challenge was to raise funds for the Australian Rotary Health Mental Illness Research project and the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia.

The Ride to the Other Side movement began four years ago and the team have raised almost $240,000 for various charities. http://goo.gl/rmS5aB

International News

RI President: K R “Ravi” Ravindran

Dear Fellow Rotarians

We’re delighted to report that [today] Nigeria has passed one year with no new cases of the wild poliovirus.

This is the longest the country has ever gone without a case of polio and a critical step on the path toward a polio-free Africa. We’ve come a long way since the bleak years when the virus reached its peak. It was only a decade ago that polio struck 12,631 people in Africa- three quarters of all cases in the world.

We congratulate Rotarians who have donated $688.5 million to fight polio throughout Africa, including more than $200 million to Nigeria. We congratulate Rotarians from Africa and around the world who have also devoted countless hours to immunize the children who now have the opportunity for healthier, happier lives.

With the ambitious scope of Rotary’s PolioPlus program, our efforts are having a far-reaching, transformative impact beyond the eradication of polio. With the infrastructure put in place by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), Nigeria not only reduced its polio caseload by 90% in 2014, but it also successfully thwarted the world’s most lethal Ebola outbreak to date, in only 90 days, a response faster than even the U.S., and rightly praised by the World Health Organization as ‘world-class’.

In Nigeria and elsewhere, the Initiative provides a blueprint to reach all children with a package of lifesaving vaccines and health interventions. This is a vital step on the path to human development, as we know that with improved public health, more resources can be channeled towards education and economic growth.

If the stringent World Health Organization testing criteria are met, then Nigeria could be removed from the list of polio-endemic countries in September of this year. However, our work is not done. We know that polio can easily return, with devastating consequences, if we don’t stamp it out now.

We must act, as Rotarians do, to build on the progress made and stop polio once and for all. We have a narrow window of opportunity to achieve this, and if we fail, we could witness up to 200,000 cases a year in the near future. So how can we finally make history and end polio now?

Today, we must protect the progress made in Nigeria, and support Pakistan and Afghanistan, the other two remaining polio-endemic countries.

Protecting progress means enhancing surveillance, routine immunization, and community engagement in Nigeria and other countries where transmission has been stopped.

Supporting Pakistan and Afghanistan means full political and financial commitment to eradicating polio; vaccination of all children in these countries; high quality surveillance, and the accomplishment of all the expert recommendations as part of the GPEI’s Polio Eradication and Endgame Strategic Plan.

Visit endpolio.org to download a toolkit of materials to help you share this progress – and the need for continued commitment in the coming years – with your Rotary club, your communities and your elected officials. This all requires time, energy and investment. Pakistan’s budget requirements for polio eradication activities from 2016-2018 amounts to $305.7 million, and if we can raise this sum now, a polio-free world will reap financial savings of US$50 billion over the next 20 years and prove what’s possible when the global community comes together to improve children’s lives.

Your donation to PolioPlus will be matched 2 to 1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, tripling your contribution. Thirty years ago we told the world what Rotary believes: that we can achieve the eradication of only the second human disease in history. Our belief is becoming reality. For every child, let’s make sure that reality is a bright one.

Four-Way Test of the things we think, say or do

Is it the truth?

Is it fair to all concerned?

Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Without community service, we would not have

a strong quality of life. It’s important to the person

who serves as well as the recipient. It’s the way in which we

ourselves grow and develop. Dorothy Height
