Red Deer Lacombe Consistuency candidates Jeff Rock from the Liberals, Blaine Calkins, MP for the Conservatives and Doug Hart for the NDP attended a forum sponsored by Rimbey Library held at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre Sept. 29.

Treena Mielke Photo

As the federal election looms closer, politicians are gathering at communi-ty forums to express their views, encourage people to get out and vote and, above all, sway the public opinion in their favour.

A forum held at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre last Tuesday at-tracted a good crowd, sparked lively conversa-tion and gave politicians a chance to interact with the public.

Jeff Rock from the Liberal Party, Blaine Calkins, MP for the Conservatives and Doug Hart from the NDP who are running in the Red Deer Lacombe Constituency were front row and centre at the de-bate as they fi elded ques-tions from the audience and offered comments at the beginning and the end of the forum.

Reg Kreil started the questioning by inquiring about public transit and the lack of buses coming to Rimbey.

Hart said addressing in-frastructure issues was open of the planks of the NDP platform, Calkins said a portion of the gas rebate refund goes into programs related to public transpor-tation.

“I’m delighted to hear about public transporta-tion in rural Alberta,” said Rock. He said the Liberals plan to increase funding for public transport.

He went on to say cen-tral Alberta is at a 7.5 un-employment rate and now is the time to kick start the economy and invest in jobs.

Calkins defended the government’s announce-ment in April that G3, which is partly owned by Saudi Arabia, would buy 50.1 per cent of the Canadian Wheat Board for $250 million. The rest is to be kept in trust for grain farmers, but in seven years G3 has the option to buy back the units from farm-ers at market value.

Calkins said grain is now directly to market places from the fi eld, the price of beef has never been better and pork prices are com-ing back.

But Hart said the wheat

Federal debate attract good crowd at Rimbey

community centreBY TREENA MIELKE board was sold for egg

money and there are many more assets than have been listed.

“Farmers are still getting the same prices as what their grandfathers got,” he said.

Rock said rail systems are tied up with oil and gas and the rail system is failing the farmers.

“Selling our wheat board means the ultra rich are getting ultra richer,’ he said.

“I think Canada has to change our business model from a strip and ship, create value added jobs, not just in oil and gas, but in agricultural as well.”

Tax invasion is a prob-lem that is being ad-dressed, said Calkins, but noted there is more work that needs to be done.

“Multi billionaires are walking away scott free,” said Rock.

“The government must tighten loopholes and there needs to be great-er accountability,” added Hart.

Calkins defended his government’s position on research noting that bil-lions of dollars has been spent on scientifi c re-search.

But the other politicians disagreed.

“The Harper government has muzzled scientists.

Lacombe Research Station could be next on the chop-ping block,” said Rock.

“Research is the pursuit of truth and cutting funds for research has not ben-efi ted the country, added Hart.

Irene Lovell questioned Calkins about cuts to the CBC.

“I have been listening to CBC for 60 years and feel that I have learned enough to have a virtual university degree,” she said.

However Calkins said CBC has internal fi nancial issues and the govern-ment has not cut funding.

“CBC is a real asset for us as Canadians,” said Rock.

In his closing comments Rock said he considered Calkins and Hart to be his colleagues, not his oppo-nents.

“We are all trying to earn your votes,” he said. “We are all investing in the future and I still believe better is possible. I fully believe we can do better together.

“We are the envy of our peer nations,” said Calkins. What are the big questions? Steven Harper will get those questions right.”

“I want to make the best decisions for the citizens,” said Hart. “I don’t want to be a white crayon on a white page and not make any difference.”

Over the last couple of weeks I performed three separate acts of kindness. Though, it wasn’t like I was a bad person every other instance outside of those isolated good deeds. I suspect I am becoming more conscience of my ev-eryday actions because of

Acts of kindness may not defi ne what makes a good personthe philosophy class lec-tures, on society and val-ues that I attend at Red Deer College.

The fi rst good act of kindness I performed was helping a student boost their vehicle. I was ap-proaching the RDC west parking lot and noticed that someone had the hood up on their car and struggled to fi nd the spot to secure the hood prop rod. I also noticed it was a Ford car. Prior to leaving a career as an automotive technician, I amassed an abundance of experience fi xing Fords. I didn’t have booster cables in my truck, but I managed to fl ag down a tow truck driver (that was towing away a differ-ent vehicle). The tow truck driver lent me his boost-

er pack; I rushed back to the stranded student and boosted the car.

In the second situation I assisted a student fi nd the book store on campus. As I was leaving the RDC library and overheard a librarian try to explain to a stu-dent that the library didn’t sell textbooks—the book-store did. I approached the student and asked him to follow me; I was going to walk by the bookstore. The student was grateful—despite being lead to the (overpriced) bookstore.

In my third good deed I assisted a pair of stu-dents locate the place to purchase a bus pass. The halls at RDC were relative-ly quiet at the time; and the pair (that looked young enough to just have grad-

uated high school) caught me in the hall. I’ve owned more vehicles than I have bus passes in my life; and I suspect this youthful pair thought I was the janitor or something. I led the pair to a posting that explained where bus passes could be bought and further guid-ed them to the appropri-ate offi ces. My third act of kindness was completed and I felt like a good per-son.

However, my philosophy lectures lead me to second guess my intentions and start analyzing my actions. I started to think that in all of the three instanc-es I was simply exerting my knowledge (no matter how quaint) over another person: my knowledge of cars, the location of the

bookstore, and the loca-tion of the offi ce to buy a bus pass.

So one morning before attending class I decided to do something selfl ess—I brought a box of donuts to the security desk for all the campus watchmen. I fi gured I was actually ac-complishing a legitimate good deed; and I didn’t feel like I was displaying any superior knowledge over anyone. Then I real-ized that I may playing up the age old stereotype that police like donuts. Thanks to my philosophy class I’m no longer sure I’m a good person; but at least a couple people made it home, some books found their way into some eager hands, and a few people didn’t go hungry.

The sun-drenched days of autumn have been even more achingly beautiful and sun-drenched than usual this year.

It’s like living in the mid-dle of a picture perfect postcard.

Of course, in the midst of these crisp days where colours like old gold and tangerine and blood red fl aunt themselves shame-lessly beneath a sky so blue it hurts your eyes, some of us are confi ned to the indoors.

How fair is that?I was having coffee with

my daughters the other day, enjoying the little oasis in a day where the hours seem to disappear quicker than a genie in the bottle. I smiled at them, just happy, but they scowled back at me because they were not, apparently, in the same frame of mind.

Summer is over, they moaned. School’s back in, it’s almost Halloween and we are missing this beau-

Life’s lessons

never end

tiful weather.I thought of school rooms

and learning and offi ces and computers and the end of daylight saving time and suddenly felt all sad right along with them.

My girls carry on relent-lessly, enjoying their own misery immensely while they sip their skinny lattes and discreetly sneak little pieces of my cookie until there is nothing left but crumbs.

“I hope the kids follow the rules and don’t pick on us,” they whined. “I hope we get a little longer for lunch. I hope there are lots of adults on supervision at recess.”

“I’m sure they will, girls,” I say, soothingly. “After all, you are the teachers.”

We look at each other and

share a moment of delicious laughter enjoying the fact that we are all here together and the sun is streaming through the window, warm-ing our bodies and our souls, and life is once again, simple and good.

As I drove home later, squinting my eyes against the sun that had apparently moved west right along with me, I contemplated the facts of life we had manage to fi gure out during our little coffee break.

The rules of the school yard always seem to re-main intact in some form or another, whether you are competing in a blood sport like hockey or politics or simply an every day Joe public type person.

Play nice. Share. Be kind.

Remember the golden rule.I see in my mind’s eye the

schoolrooms and chalk-boards of my school days, all black and white and orderly, with no delete button to erase or change the rules according to race, religion or fi nances.

The rules were just as black and white as the chalkboard!

We all knew, the children of the ‘50s and ‘60s, the days before iPhones and iPads and cell phones and laptops and white boards and smart boards, what the rules were.

You started the day by saying The Lord’s prayer. You listened to your teacher. The strap was not only visible in the classroom. It was used.

Parents sided with the teacher, and there wasn’t

really any youth justice type committees to turn to if you felt justice was not being doled out appropriately and you were on your own to suffer the consequences of your actions.

Despite all those rules that existed in the black and white chalkboard school days that etched out my childhood, it was fun being a kid.

I smile as I remember and then my mind comes back to the present and the dazzling colours of fall. For the millionth time I wish I could paint enough word pictures to describe such beauty.

I settle for awesome which is kind of lame, but, sadly, I’m already home and I have to make supper!

Ceremonies held for Rimbey graduating class of 2015

Congratulations!Today is your day. You’re

off to great places! You’re off and away.

You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes.

You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.

You’re on your own. And you know what you

know.You are the guy who’ll

decide where to go.Dr. SeussIt seemed fi tting that

this poem by Dr. Seuss was on the front page of pro-gram for the Rimbey High School’s graduating class.

As Dr. Seuss had so aptly pointed out in his short poem, for the young peo-ple on stage, graduation was their day. It was the end of an era and the be-ginning of a new chapter.

Many of the grads are

all ready off and away, en-rolled in college and uni-versities to pursue further education goals. Others are undecided as to what direction they will go.

But, even as the winds of change continue to blow, each and every gradu-ate from Rimbey Junior High School came back to attend the graduation ceremonies held Sept. 26 at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre, a true testament to their strong values of education and community.

During the ceremonies several guest speakers took a few moments to offer their congratulations and a brief message.

In his principal’s mes-sage Tim Lekas said “the theme you have chosen tonight is ‘I lived.’

“It is a little retrospective as a theme, but this night is a lot about looking back

on the good times and ex-periences you had. I would also suggest that you are about to enter a much lon-ger part of your life in adulthood, and there is much to look forward to, to work towards, to expe-rience and enjoy. Continue living and working to-wards your goals, hope-fully doing something you loved to do.”

“Everyone in this room is here because they are proud of you and are pleased to share in this significant accomplish-ment for they have trav-elled this road with you and have obviously helped you along the way,” said Trudy Bratland, chair-man of Wolf Creek Public Schools.

Rimbey Mayor Rick Pankiw also congratulated the grads.

“Follow your passions and stay true to yourself,” he said. “Do not waste your time living someone else’s life.”

MLA Jason Nixon jok-ingly told the students it was time to address the elephant in the room.

“I’m 5’20”,” he joked. On a more sober note, he encouraged the grads to enjoy their night, stay safe and celebrate their accom-plishments.

Dr. Larry Jacobs, super-intendent of Wolf Creek Public Schools also offered his congratulations, noting he was a former grad of Rimbey High School.

Valedictorian Trevor Weenink gave an inspira-tional speech, spiked with humour and sprinkled with lots of ‘remember whens.’

After thanking his par-ents, he stressed that his friends helped him get through high school.

“Having friends made school easier,” he said. “It was fun.”

He also thanked his teachers for their en-couragement and sup-port throughout his high school years.

He said looking back on high school should not be a sad thing, calling again on the words of Dr. Seuss for inspiration.

“Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it hap-pened.”

“It’s just one more epi-sode of Netfl ex,” he said. “Keep your friends close, keep smiles on your faces.”

working for eight weeks at the pharmacy at the Rimbey Hospital. They will graduate from university in June of next year and the time spent in Rimbey is part of their practicum.

Both Van De Walle and LeBeau have completed other practicums, but the time spent at the pharma-cy at the Rimbey Hospital has provided the most re-sponsibility, they said.

While working at the hospital, the students are living with Ron and Donna Hansen on their farm near Bentley. They are enjoying farm life and are grateful for the kindness extended to them by the Hansens.

“It’s awesome,” said LeBeau. “It’s been a great experience,” added Van De Walle.

Living on a farm and experienced the rural lifestyle while working in Rimbey has been fun

and interesting for Van De Walle who is from St. Albert and LeBeau who is from Callihoo.

The ladies have toured

Rimbey and were pleased to discover the outdoor gym equipment near the Nesting Place camp-ground. They have also

checked out the down-town.

“We’re happy there is a Subway, but sad there is no Tims,” said Van De Walle.

Th ank-you to everyone who supported the event, with your generosity we raised $9,100.00 for the Area of Greatest Need

at the Central AB Cancer Center. A special thanks to all of the individuals who donated items and time

to help make Washoo Doin’ 2015 such a success!

Kudos to those involved

in creating skateboard

parkDear Editor,

Kudos to everyone in-volved in making the Rimbey skateboard park a reality.

On Wednesday after-noon I counted 35 youths of ages from ages fi ve to 16 having a lot of fun on a va-riety of things on wheels.

Investing in youth that is what we do in Rimbey and we do it well.

Thanks to all who made this happen.

Edo Deweert,Rimbey

The skateboard park in Rimbey opened last Friday and it has been very busy with youngsters of all ages trying it out. The weather has been conducive to skateboarding and the young people in Rimbey have taken advantage of this new facility which allows them lots of time in the outdoors.

Jesse Roper will entertain at The Beatty House on Oct. 18. Shows begin at 7:30 p.m. Roper is among the musicians who come to the Beatty House as part of house tours. Musicians who entertain each add their own brand of authenticity and talent to the evening’s performance.

Victoria BC’s Jesse Roper will be at The Beatty House in Rimbey on October 18.

Festival promoter Dylan Willows said Jesse Roper’s performance is magnetic.

“I was mesmerized by his energy. It [is] raw and it just draws you in.”

Roper’s music is current, but some may relate his electric ability and youth-

BY TREENA MIELKEful vitality with Stevie Ray Vaughan and vintage Texas blues.

Roper’s full length album Son of John had already been critically acclaimed when he released his highly anticipated sophomore Red Bird in early 2015.

Roper fi rst began playing the guitar at the tender age of six and went on to pick up the tunes of his musi-cial heroes including Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin. He was a natural, playing the well loved tunes by ear.

He struggled with stage fright, but was overwhelm-ingly accepted by his audi-ences and so began a mu-sical career that has taken him to headline major fes-tivals.

He has performed in front of thousands of fans such as Sunfest, Riffl andia and Rock the Shores, or touring across the country during his residency as a CN rail musician.

Roper said he enjoys doing House Tours and is looking forward to coming to Rimbey.

“I really have a good time, and I hope they (the au-dience) does too,” he said. “I have lots of energy and I write all kinds of stuff. I like playing outside the box,” he said.

The proceeds from a nine-track solo CD he will have on hand in Rimbey will go to the Our Place Charity, a charity in Victoria for the homeless. He is selling the CD for $6.17 which is what he says is the cost of feed-ing the homeless for a day.

Before coming to Rimbey he will be spending time in Whitehorse, Yukon. His song Yukon Girl will, no doubt, be a hit on that tour.

Town of RimbeyRimbey council has

given the green light to a new logo for the town.

At its regular meeting, Monday councilors briefl y discussed changes to the logo before giving it their stamp of approval.

The fi nal design shows the word ‘Rimbey’ writ-ten in fl owing blue letters. Before the word Rimbey, there is a design depict-ing a highway curving to-wards the name which is to suggest all roads lead to Rimbey. A green curve indicates agriculture is strong in the area.

Council approved a sug-gestion made by Melvin Durand to change the oil drop above the second let-ter in the word Rimbey to the color black was given

the nod by council.Council also agreed to

have Craig Oliver from amazing ideas (the com-pany who is designing the town’s website) to change the letter ‘b’ so it wouldn’t be mistaken for a ‘6’.

Mayor Rick Pankiw said a new logo is needed.

“What we’re trying to tell people is that Rimbey is open for business,” said Pankiw.

Interim CAO Donna Tona said the logo should con-vey a message.

“What do we want to attract?” she said. “Right now we’re attracting noth-ing.” Why would people want to come here?”

She noted during dis-cussions regarding the town’s new website it has become apparent the fi rst thing the public sees in the

changing the town’s logo is a big decision.

“It shows how we are going to present Rimbey,” he said.

Council agreed to pres-ent Pas Ka Poo Park with the previous town logo.

The untimely death of Ponoka student Taylor Leverick in a motor vehicle accident in March has his family looking to honour his life through a blood drive.

The event is called Taylor’s Drive, named by Leverick’s brother Thomas, and is meant to high-light his love of driving. Leverick’s Aunt Shelley McFadden said he was given several pints of blood before his passing on March 15 and the fami-ly had valuable time to say their farewells.

To remember Leverick, and to recognize the im-portance of that donated blood, the family is work-ing with Canadian Blood Services in Ponoka and Rimbey with 100 spots available for blood don-ours.

“What people gave him, we want to give to others,” said McFadden. Ponoka’s community blood drive is set for Monday, Sept. 28 and for Rimbey the date is set for Monday, Oct. 26.

McFadden said it gives the family a goal to focus on while they continue to deal with his loss. “He was 16 but he had lived such a full life.

He was such a kind, car-ing soul,” said McFadden. Eventually, the fami-ly would like to create a special blood donour day specifically in memo-ry of Leverick but work-ing with Canadian Blood Services scheduled dates gave the family a chance to start honouring his life. McFadden expects to see strong interest and sug-gests spaces will fi ll up quickly. For more informa-tion contact McFadden at 403-843-3694 or 403-358-6259.

It was considered “the best turnout in a long time” at the Bentley Minor Hockey (BMH) fall Annual General Meeting and Registration Night on September 8.

The season should start earlier than usual this year as the ice is scheduled to be going in a few weeks earlier than usual under the direction of a new ice maker Graham Parsons from Sylvan Lake.

Most Bentley Atom/Bantam players will be playing in either Rimbey or Sylvan Lake and one on a Red Deer AAA Bantam team.

BMH will be hosting a fundraising event December 5 with a dinner, live auction and entertainment.

Executive for this season include Jeremy Park president, Don Morrison vice president, Kelly McKinlay regis-trar, Rochelle Stephenson treasurer, Amanda Hamelin secretary, Maureen Moore ice coordinator, Ryan Walker equipment manager, Lyn Garries fund-raising, Chris Whitfi eld referee coor-dinator and Heidi McKinlay website coordinator.

The first meeting of the Bentley School Parent Council for this school term was held on September 21. There was some good news to share.

Letters had been received from both Premier Notley and Mr. David Eggen, Minister of Education, stating that there is no viability study being done of the Bentley high school and that the Bentley School was in no danger of clos-ing. Both letters thanked people who had written letters of concern about the possible closure of the Bentley High School.

Because at present there is no need to worry about losing the local high school, the letter writing campaign start-ed last year defending

the school has been sus-pended for now.

Enrollment increased in elementary and ju-nior high grades but dropped in high school. This term so far there are 329 students en-rolled in Kindergarten to grade 12 with 54 more in Pre-Kindergarten. There are 33 in Kindergarten, one 162 in grades 1-6, 81 in grades 7-9, and 53 in grades 10-12. Numbers can fl uctuate.

Breakfast and lunch programs continue for those students that need it, but because of the tight budget, fundraising ideas are being explored to help fund fi eld trips. On September 18 the Welcome Back Breakfast raised almost $920.

On the same day al-most $5,000 was raised for the Terry Fox Foundation.

Six staff from last year left: Brenda Von Kuster, Michael Sonnenberg, Pam Stephenson, Scott Maetche, Kaylee Sage, and Joe Hackett.

Three new enthusi-astic members have joined the staff includ-ing Kyle Brown, Lauren Charanduk and Jackie Shukin who will all mainly teach grade 9-12. There are now as many educational assistants as teachers in the school.

New courses being of-fered include French and Spanish.

Flute/recorder lessons are being offered by Marla Kolybaba.

Some other options of-fered at the high school level on Tuesday after-noons include fi ne arts, musical theatre, guitar lessons, and building construction.

The golf and fi ne arts

BY JUNE NORVILA

Bentley school gains younger studentsacademy continue. There are 50 students enrolled in the hockey academy this year.

There are no swim-ming lessons being of-fered this year due to the Sylvan Lake pool clo-sure.

Metals and wood class-es are offered at Rimbey, with busing being fund-ed by the district.

The fi tness center in

the elementary school is closed to the community but will remain accessi-ble for the school.

Sports nights in the gymnasium for the com-munity will resume in November and the el-ementary school hall-ways are open in the evenings for those who want to walk.

Parent council exec-utive remain Cheryl

Hueppelsheuser chair, Stephanie Smith secre-tary, Karen Jaffray vice chair, Bonnie Pacholko & Mona Kubista directors, and Fundraising Liaison Janis Bickford.

Watch for a parent advisory council meet-ing date in November. All people interested in school activities are wel-come to attend. All input is important.

Bluffton Veterinary Services welcomes new associate veterinarian

Dr. Jasmine, new as-sociate veterinarian at Bluffton Veterinary Services, graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 2014 and jour-neyed west. She had al-ready spent three sum-mers working in central Alberta veterinary clin-ics and was drawn back to the area because of the clientele and envi-ronment. Her focus over the last year has been

New associate vet at Bluffton clinic

SUBMITTED equine medicine, main-ly reproduction and neo-natal care, but also par-ticipated in all aspects of general practice. Dr. Jasmine made the move to Bluffton to further her career by expanding her knowledge base in bovine, bison and small animal medicine.

Dr. Jasmine has been an avid horse person since she was nine years-old and has rid-den and shown in many different disciplines. Her current horse, Duncan is being educated in Western and English life, but they most enjoy their hours on the trail conditioning for endur-ance races. Dr. Jasmine’s love for horses led her to pursue an education in veterinary medicine and has continued to nur-ture her clinical skills in reproduction, sports medicine and joint ther-apy, and primary care.

Bluffton Veterinary Services is thrilled to

have Dr. Jasmine join the team. The staff at the clinic ( Dr. Pat, Dr. Stacey, Dr. Andrea, Robyn - AHT, Kennedy - AHT, Rae-ann - AHT, Marnie - offi ce manager) are all look-ing forward to expand-ing services now offered to equine, bovine and small animal clients, with Dr. Jasmine as part of the group. Dr. Pat is especially happy to have found an associate with youthful enthusiasm and brilliant veterinary knowledge and skills, to help support the large animal workload. As the autumn gets busier with bovine work, expect to see Dr. Jasmine on the road, as well as Dr. Pat, working with our equine and cattle clients to en-sure their herd health requirements are satis-fi ed. Feel free to drop into the clinic during regular business hours ( 8:30 am – 5 pm Monday thru Friday) to meet Dr. Jasmine.

Morriah Rudnik and Cassidy Hohn are among the Rimbey High School graduating class of 2015.

The Rimbey Fire Department and The Agricultural Society are combining their efforts to provide the communi-ty with some great family fun.

The Minions and fi re rodeo is to begin on Oct. 8 at the Rimbey Ag Centre and will include activities for the entire family.

The fun is to begin at 4 p.m. The younger set might want to take their chances mutton busting or do their best to try their hand at sinking someone sitting on a dunk tank which will be set up.

And, of course, there will be opportunities to sit in the fi re trucks, meet the fi refi ghters and enjoy hot-dog or a hamburger from the concession. Popcorn will be available as well.

At 7 p.m. the movie Minions will be shown.

Deputy fi re chief Bonnie Grundy said the fi re de-partment wanted to host

Fire rodeo and movie to be

held in AGRIMBY TREENA MIELKE a family event during

fi re prevention week and teaming up with the ag society was a great way to do so.

“We encourage everyone to come out and support us and the ag society,” she said.

Treasurer of the ag so-ciety, Shirley Ingram said the society plans to use their share of the proceeds to purchase a defi brillator for the new ag centre.

Ingram also encouraged everyone to come out and have a good time at the family fun event.

Lane Matson receives his Grade 12 diploma from Rimbey Junior/Senior High School principal Tim Lekas during the graduation and awards ceremony held at The Peter Lougheed Community Centre Sept. 26.
