Carman Dutz said being in possession of stolen mail and vandilizing mail boxes are criminal offences which could result in jail time.

Rimbey RCMP and Canada Post are teaming up to catch the criminals responsible for an epi-demic of mailbox break ins throughout the area and the latest break in to the towns post offi ce has meant even tighter securty meausres will be in place.
Const. Carman Dutz said the break in to the post of-fi ce was discovered when a resident stopped in to pick up mail early Wednesday morning (Jan. 20). The doors to 14 mailboxes were pried open and mail may have been stolen.
Police were immediately alerted.
Dutz is hopeful whoever is responsible for the crime will soon be apprehended.
Its early in the inves-tigation, but people are going by the post offi ce all the time and it is very lit up. It is a location that many people frequent all hours of the day or night and we are hopeful that someone has information

Stealing mail from rural mailboxes has been somewhat of an epidemic throughout the province, he said, noting Canada Post is doing its part by moving mail boxes inside the municipalities.

Mounties deal with break-ins, drugs, false identities, weapon offenses, and impaired drivers
Rimbey RCMP - The end of 2015 was a busy time for the Rimbey RCMP Detachment. In keep-ing with the Christmas season, members of the Rimbey RCMP were able to tie a bow on a few fi les by making arrests and laying charges for a vari-ety of offences including possession of stolen mail and other property under $5000, possession of sto-len vehicles, possession of drugs for the purpose
of traffi cking, weapons of-fences and impaired driv-ing.
On December 4, a mem-ber of the Rimbey detach-ment stopped a vehicle on Highway 20 for a traffi c-re-lated infraction. The driv-er, thinking he could de-ceive the offi cer, provided a false name when asked to identify himself. It took only a few more questions from the member to reveal that the driver had lied about his name.
The 34-year-old driv-er was arrested for ob-structing a police offi cer by providing a false name. Further investigation lo-cated a quantity of a sub-stance believed to be crys-tal meth inside the vehicle as well as several weap-ons and stolen property which included identity documents stolen from the Central Alberta area. The Red Deer man was
on probation at the time of his arrest and obliged to abide by the condition that he not be in posses-sion of weapons. He was charged with possessing a weapon for dangerous purpose, drug possession, identity fraud, failing to comply with the condi-tions of his probation and obstruction for lying about his identity. The male was remanded and did not speak to bail. His 24-year-old female passenger from Bashaw was also charged in the incident for drug possession, possession of stolen property, and ille-gal possession of govern-ment documents. She was released with a promise to appear at Provincial Court in Rimbey on Friday, February 5.
On December 7, another man from Red Deer was attempting to use a false name while committing
a crime. A local business contacted the Rimbey RCMP to report that a man was trying to trade a stolen vehicle. When the attending offi cer ques-tioned the individual, he lied about his name. His true identity was discov-ered in short order and the 25-year-old man was charged with fraud over $5000, possession of stolen property over $5000, ob-struction (for lying about his name), and breach of a recognizance. He was re-manded into custody and had his fi rst appearance in Provincial Court in Rimbey on Friday, January 22.
On December 9, a 28-year-old man from Alder Flats was driv-ing north on Highway 22 when his pick-up truck crossed into the south-bound lane of traffi c and
collided head on with an-other truck. Both the driv-ers were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the northbound vehicle was charged with impaired op-eration of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm. His fi rst court appearance is in Rimbey on Friday, February 5, 2016.
On December 14, local Mounties located 29-year-old Red Deer resident, Ryan Litwyn, who was wanted by police on warrants issued by the Edmonton Police Service and Red Deer RCMP. Upon his arrest, Litwyn attempt-ed to resist police by run-ning away. Unfortunately for him, the RCMP are not only perceptive, but swift of foot. The foot pursuit was brief and Litwyn was apprehended with some
assistance from a local resident. A search warrant was executed on Litwyns motel room which afford-ed evidence to support a large number of criminal charges against him and 26-year-old Alyssa Dube of Rimbey. Together, they are charged with over 100 criminal offences includ-ing possession of stolen mail, fraudulent use of sto-len credit cards and failing to comply with the con-ditions of a recognizance. Litwyn is also charged with resisting arrest, ID fraud, mischief, uttering a forged document, and pos-session of stolen property. Their next appearance in Provincial Court in Rimbey was scheduled for Friday, January 22.

Freedom and liberty are not cheap commodities
Word on the street is that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is still getting fl ack for pulling out the CF-18 fi ghter jets out of Syria last year. Canada might be getting slammed for our passivity towards the direct war on ter-ror; and its unfortunate, though, to say that these wars cost money. I dont know what the cost of fi ghter jet fuel is, but I can admit to looking up at those big illuminated signs advertising the price of regular 87 at the pumps
Birthday party

The siblings sit quietly, saying nothing much at all.
Its your birthday, Sunday, my sister said to her much older brother, as she adjusted the blanket around his frail shoulders.
He said nothing, only looked at her for a long time, his pale blue eyes locked on hers.
Players Plain, he fi nal-ly said with a chuckle, meaning, of course, buy me a package of smokes and it will all be good.
I laugh when she tells me that story.
Years ago, my brother who is our oldest sibling, served in the Canadian Armed Forces. He was a handsome young man with a disarming grin and a soft gentleness about him, a kind of innocence like a kid might have.
When I was a kid, my-self, I loved my brother, but not really the man, just the concept of him. To me, he was the guy who sent presents. I had no idea where they came from, nor did I care much. I specifi cally remember a beautiful embroidered silk bedspread from Korea, (unfortunately, the cat bore a litre of kittens on it and it never really was the same) and a beautiful jew-elry box inlaid with Mother of Pearl from China.
So in my little mind, my brother and Santa kind of got mixed up.
Anyway, it was my brothers 83rd birthday, Sunday.
His birthday party was a small, but tastefully el-egant affair, held at his new home in Michener Extended Care.
The guests were few,
but each distinguished in their own right.
First of all was my broth-ers wife, his fi rst lady. He is crazy in love with his wife, and her presence makes him all happy and when he sees her his face is wreathed in smiles.
He loves her like a love story.
And then there was the rest of us, all crowding around the little dining room in the main fl oor of the nursing home. His wifes daughter who has adopted him as her own father, his sisters, broth-ers-in-law, great nieces, nephews, and bless her heart, one special nine-year-old little great niece.
Prompted by her mom, she shyly presented him a homemade birthday card which she had, no doubt,
laboured over intensely. Me, being her grandma, was bursting with pride at her actions and wanted to immediately smother her slightly blushing pony-tailed self with kisses, but I refrained, being I would probably embarrass her even more than she was already.
Happy birthday, she wrote. The misspelling of his name reminding me of the letters I used to write to him when I was about her age. Who knew the name Horace was not spelled the same as the animal Horse.
So there was cake and cupcakes and coffee and lots of cards. There was chatter and hugs and reminiscing and smiles.
It was a quiet and gentle January afternoon and I
would like to believe all of us in that room were visit-ed by an unseen presence.
Love. It would have to be love.
Finally, my brother was wheeled back to his room, but not before he went out for a smoke with the guys, all of them braced against the cold chill of the January wind.
Finally, we all went home and ate the leftover cupcakes.
Later my sister phoned and we talked over the party.
I think he was sur-prised, she said. I dont think he had a clue.
Of course, I couldnt see her pleased smile being we were on the phone and all.
But, Im sure she was! Smiling, that is!
when I drive by.I remember when my
father fl ew helicopters up north in the bush a while back. I used to ask him every now and again ques-tions about aviation. He was fl ying and fi ghting forest fi res all summer in Quebec; somehow it came up in conversation about the hourly cost of running a helicopter: it was up-wards of $1500/hr and the machine dad fl ew wasnt that large.
All fuel expenses aside, the sheer cost to main-tain a fi ghter jet mechan-ically would likely hit the stratosphere too. I used to see the hourly rate the diesel shop charged the customer when I was re-
placing head gaskets on a Powerstroke engine. It is likely that I would cringe while glancing at the bill for the replacement any of the CF-18s avionic equip-ment. The cost of one mis-sile is probably enough to pay for a terms worth of English classes at RDC. Keeping fi ghter jets in ac-tive duty was likely cost-ing Ottawa a fortuneand the pilots needed a pay cheque too.
I dislike acknowledging that freedom and liber-ty for humans caught in the confl icts of war cost money; moreover, I sup-pose Trudeau saw the fuel bill for keeping those fi ghter jets in the air, and fi gured it was best to send
them (the jets) home.It isnt necessary to have
to quote the fi nancial sec-tion of the metropolitan newspapers to tell you that the price of oil isnt worth the cost of the bar-rel its stored in. The big cheques arent getting sent to Ottawa these days and Trudeau might have to dig a little deeper to be able to afford to send the ultra-high-octane-jet-fuel burning CF-18s back to Syria to help fi ght the war on terror.
It would be sadly ironic to see ships, jets, trucks, and troops from Canada get sent to fi ght terrorists after enough tax dollars have been collected from Trudeaus supposed legal-
ization of marijuana. A freshly baked bank ac-count for the war on ter-ror. They might have to paint over the maple leaf on the side of CF-18s with a pot leaf. The pilots could give the peace sign and shout from the cockpit dont worry weve got the Sirius satellite radio set on the reggae channel.
Canada cant stand idle while terrorism continues to manifest in parts of the world. Canada also wont be able to stand up straight if marijuana gets legalized. Trudeau will have to fi nd a means of keeping the books balanced in Ottawa, or else physician-assisted suicide will start making more sense.

Dear Editor,On December 2, 2015 the Canadian Food Inspection
Agency (CFIA) released their fi nal report on the in-vestigation into the 19th case of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) in Canada, discovered in Feb. 2015. Case #19 was born on the same birth farm as case #17. The animal in case # 19 was born in March of 2009, while Case #17 was discovered in 2010. Case #19 is unique in that it was born and infected after the enhanced feed ban of 2007 was in place.
What does this mean?The extensive investigation looked at any feed mill
that was involved in producing commercial feed fed on this farm. Fortunately no lapses in protocols that could have allowed contamination of cattle feed were found. This is very good news. While no absolute smoking gun was found, the most likely cause of this latest BSE case is that the cow consumed a minute particle of left over feed from prior to the feed ban/enhanced feed ban that was still in a feed storage bin. Scientists believe that as little 1/5 of a gram (ie a garden pea cut into 15 pieces) of prion contaminated feed is enough to infect a calf. It is very easy to imagine tiny grains of feed or dust can remain in a feed bin long after that feed is gone.
What does this mean for the Canadian/ Alberta cattle industry? We know the feed ban/enhanced feed ban of 2007 means that no amplifi cation or magnifi cation of the disease can happen in Canada like it did in the UK. That means that if we keep doing what we are doing, eventually Classical BSE will no longer exist in Canada. One of the things that we NEED to keep doing is testing appropriate cattle for BSE.
Most, if not all beef and dairy producers are famil-iar with the Canada Alberta BSE Sampling Program (CABSESP). This is primarily the on-farm testing of dead, down, diseased or distressed cattle by a produc-ers herd veterinarian. Unfortunately the number of animals being testing over the last few years in Alberta has dropped to a level where we are no longer meeting our testing requirements. This potentially puts our export trade of beef at risk. If our beef industry loses valuable overseas markets because we are perceived to have dropped the ball and are not actively testing it has the potential to be fi nancially devastating.
What can our beef industry do to help? On farm BSE testing programs like the CABSESP will be needed for decades! We will need to continue to test for the long term to maintain the confi dence of our export markets and consumers. The industry NEEDS your help.
BSE testing numbers need to increase in Alberta. This is not the time to let someone else contribute, every-one needs to take ownership and help. It is estimated that if each beef and dairy farm in Alberta had one appropriate test done per year we would surpass our targets. It is a very easy program to participate in and help your industry. On December 29, members of the Rimbey RCMP ex-ecuted a search warrant on a rural property east of Rimbey as part of an investigation into stolen property and drug-related activities. Gerald Damer, a 41-year-old Rimbey res-ident, and a 17-year-old youth who cannot be named under the provi-sions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, were arrested and charged with property and drug offences. As a result of the search, mem-bers recovered stolen fi re-arms, stolen vehicles and

Just after midnight, while everyone else was singing auld land syne, the Mounties were on pa-trol to make 2016 safe. A vehicle was stopped south of Rimbey for speeding. The 39-year-old male driv-er from Eckville displayed signs of impairment. He was arrested for impaired operation of a motor ve-hicle and is to appear in Provincial Court in Rimbey
on Friday, February 5.The RCMP partners with
community and other gov-ernment organizations to reduce crime and in-crease safety for the public. Alberta Parks Enforcement is partnering with local law enforcement to keep the protected areas in the region. Aspen Beach Provincial Park is a pro-tected area on Gull Lake. Conservation Offi cers con-tinue to issue violation tickets to snowmobiles and OHVs as motorized ac-cess is not permitted. The Provincial Park is intend-ed to preserve the natural habitat and allow recre-ational activities such as cross country skiing and snowshoeing.

Kim Beach, featured on CBC Radio Ones The Next Chapter, is a published au-thor who has written sev-eral books. She is the AB/NWT representative on the National Council of the League of Canadian Poets and is working on a novella about a giant puppet as well as a novel about 1970s romance comics.
A cake decorating demon-stration by Corrinna Rapley, a certifi ed Wilton method instructor, should be fun as well as informative.
Jennifer Anderson, a stylist at Altered Images, will host
a session on hair demon-strations. Anderson enjoys working with the public and is looking forward to owning her own shop one day.
Hilary Ann Scott, founder of Your Yoga Studio, will offer a session in the afternoon. After 20 years of world trav-eling and practicing the art of yoga, she is pleased to return to central Alberta and open her own yoga studio.
Also in the afternoon will be a drink mixology session by Sean Draper, owner of To The Lost, a cocktail lounge in downtown Red Deer.
And for those who sew or want to learn more about sewing, Tracy Brittain Loyek will present the session SEW WHAT?!
The day will wrap up with Shannon Boyce-Campbell at 3:30.

Rimbey drug traffi cker
sent to jail
Rimbey RCMP report a Rimbey resident charged with drug possession in 2014 will spend two years behind bars.
In October, 2014, Nathan Webb, a 28 year old Rimbey resident, was stopped for speeding. Drugs were found in his vehicle in a quantity consistent with traffi cking. He was subsequently charged with possession of cocaine and methamphetamine for the pur-pose of traffi cking, possession of marihuana, and for speeding.
Webb was found guilty as charged and sentenced in December, 2015 to two years in custody.
Currently, there are three other people who have been charged by the Rimbey RCMP for possession of drugs for the purpose of traffi cking in the past year, said Const. Carman Dutz.
Their cases are before the courts. A lot of work goes into building a strong case against drug traffi ckers so that they are held responsible for their crimes. Information from the public is a key component in building a case. If you have information about drug activity, please be a part of the solution by sharing that information with the RCMP.

Volunteer recalls years of helping out
What makes a volunteer step up to the plate, not just once, but time and time again?
Ask Violet Christianson, one of Rimbeys dedicated long time volunteers, and she will tell you.
They needed some peo-ple to help out and I just did whatever came up.
Christianson, who has now gracefully slipped away from many of her volunteer duties, is still ac-tive in the Rimbey Legion, plays the piano at Parkland Manor and helps out at her church.
I like to be busy, she said. I dont like to sit around doing nothing.
Multi tasking is not a new word for the vivacious se-nior, who admits to doing a huge crossword puzzle while watching television. She is also an active fl oor curler and enjoys the game and visiting with other se-niors at Rimbey Drop In Centre.
I know a lot of people at the Drop In, she said. I do have a lot of friends.
Attracting friends is easy for Christianson, whose friendly smile and cheerful demeanor has not dimin-ished over time.
I have never seen her without a smile, said Carolynne Jensen from Rimbey FCSS. She has a warm personality, empathy for others and always has a smile and a greeting for everyone.
Christianson, who was nominated for the Ministers Seniors Service Award last year along with Gladys Johnson, has lived in the area for many years. She and her late husband Bruce raised their three children, Keith, Karen and Wendy southwest of Rimbey on Hwy. 766. She said the highway was a dirt road when they moved in.
When her husband passed away in 2008, Christianson rented the farm out. She has lived in town for several years.
Despite a busy life as a wife and mother, as well as an employee of Rimbey Co-op, Christianson gave free-ly of her time as one of the communitys long serving volunteers.
She served on the FCSS board of directors for many years and was one of the founding members that formed the Rimbey Home Help Services which deliv-ers home support, home care, meals on wheels, medical alert and volun-teer visiting and transpor-tation.
She also volunteered with FCSS helping out with seniors information and referral services and com-pleting income tax forms.
I enjoyed doing the in-come tax, she said. I met a lot of people and was able to help them out.
When she was not busy volunteering in some other capacity, she was playing the piano or giving music lessons.

Violet Christianson, a long time volunteer for Rimbey FCSS is scaling back on her volunteer time and Carolynne Jensen, senior information and referral co-ordinator for FCSS said she will be greatly missed.

Shes been a tireless vol-unteer for more than 30 years. She has a natural common sense to han-dling lifes circumstances and she has a smile and a warmth about her that makes everyone feel com-fortable.
Christianson has two grandchildren, Richard and Lisa and one great-grand-daughter, Mikayla.

Gary Clifford Robinson of Bentley, Alberta passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, Red Deer on Friday, January 15, 2016 at the age of 70 years. Gary leaves behind his cherished family: his loving wife, Myrna; his daughter,
Teryn (Steve); and his sons, Scott (Becky), Shane (Natasha), and Wyatt (Vanessa); his beloved grandchildren, Lorne, Addison, Deegan, Ben, and Harper; his parents, Doreen and Les Peters; and his brothers, Aaron (Gerri), and Darrell (Pam); in addition to a large extended family. He was predeceased by his father, Cliff; his fi rst wife, Rose; his sister, Myra; his brother, Dwayne; and infant twin sisters. Garys children will miss his excellent advice, and the wealth of knowledge he shared with them. His wife will miss her best friend and constant companion of nearly 35 years, and his mischievous smile. A Memorial Service in Celebration of Garys Life was held at the Blindman Valley Ag Centre, Bentley on Saturday, January 23, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor David Larsen offi ciating.
