Not accurate enough for war
Maximum shot: 400yd, effective shot >100yd
Musket
rifle
Slow firing rate .6 as fast as musket
Much buildup in muzzle
Accurate up to <400yd.
Minie Ball and Rifled Musket
Combination of Henry rifle and flintlock musket
Minnie “ball” had ridges on the end that would expand when shot
Allowed for tight fit while traveling through barrel
Bullet was able to spin because of grooves in barrel
Made it more arrow dynamic when in the air
Minie Ball
Old TechniqueOld Napoleonic style did not work with new guns
Napoleonic style: Linear charges to opposing side and fast calvary raids, defend with canister fire: effective >400yd
Rifled muskets were able to do damage from farther away, canister fire not effective
Napoleonic style
New Technique
Offense tried to attack from behind army, but this did not work in Battle of Gettysburg
Cover technique: attack in small groups, some cover, some shoot; fight in more covered territories and make cover from earth
Battle worked much better with new cover style
Battle with rifled Rifled Muskets
