You can answer the question What did he say? in two ways
DIRECT SPEECH:
by repeating the words spoken by reporting the words spoken
INDIRECT OR REPORTED SPEECH:

What is it ? How do you use it?
We use the Reported Speech when we are telling someone what another person said or thought, but do not use their exact words.
