Something hot has hatchedVANN VAN STADEN

We know that French is the languageof love and that France is the mostromantic country in the world.

But did you know the most importantthing the French have ever been responsiblefor is the Renault – to be more exact, the Re-nault Clio 4?

If I could ever have a crush on somethingthat doesn’t have blood pumping through itsveins, it would be the Renault Clio 4. I havemet my match in so many ways.

HickupsI’m not 100% sure this is a hick-up, but it’s

still rather odd. Doing their bit for the envi-ronment, the Renault Clio does not have aCD player. It only has an auxiliary input andUSB jack. So start getting your MP3s, iPodsand USBs loaded – I’m pretty sure most ofus do that already.

Practical magicThe key to the Clio is the size of a credit

card and slightly thicker. Awesome not tohave a chunky set of keys in your pocket.

Equally impressive was the joy I experi-enced when I was looking for somewhere toplace my can of RedBull and saw the two cupholders. Nothing worse than a can flying allover the show! Thanks, Renault, for answer-ing my prayers.

Think Need for Speed when it comes to thedashboard. With chrome-like finishes all-round and touch screen media centre/sat-nav you can’t ask for more. One of my fa-vourite little features on the Clio is the LEDdaytime running lights, which are standardacross the range. This is a keen safety fea-ture keeping you bright and visible on theroad at all times – as well as looking awe-

some while doing so.

Hitting the bankFour doors mean four times as much fun…

No, wait, actually five doors; let’s not forgetabout the boot. The boot is big enough forthe entire family’s luggage. This is one of themost comfortable five- seaters on the mar-ket. Big enough for Ouma and Oupa to comealong for the ride, yet it doesn’t take a big

chunk out of the bank account as the entrylevel Clio 4 will only set you back R149 000.That’s a monthly instalment of just R3 300(over 54 months, subject to a 10% deposit andterms and conditions).

Zero to heroInterior and exterior aside, you don’t want

to be out-smoked on the road by a cyclistpractising for the Tour de France. That’s be-

yond embarrassing. Hitting zero to hero(100km/h) in 12.2 seconds in the 66kW TurboExpression is not bad at all. The engine isonly a 0.9F, three-cylinder turbo petrol, butthat doesn’t compromise its performance.

With the Clio 4 you are spoilt with options.There are three models in the range. Fromthe entry level 55kW Authentique, 66kWTurbo Expression and the 66kW Turbo Dy-namique.
