Dementia Care Training is changing in 2010

New Dementia Units as part of the QCF Diploma in Health & Social Care

• 2 levels of qualification for dementia care workers: Level 2 & Level 3

• 14 modules focused exclusively on dementia (8 mandatory, 6 optional)

How does the QCF support employers?

Outcome 12 (Regulation 21)RECRUITMENT PROCEDURES

Workers must have the qualifications, skills and experience which are necessary for the work to be performed

Outcome 13 (Regulation 22)STAFFING LEVELS

Numbers of suitably qualified, skilled and experienced persons employed for the purpose of carrying on the regulated activities

Outcome 14 (Regulation 23)TRAINING AND SUPPORT

Supporting workers by ensuring that they receive appropriate training, professional development, supervision and appraisal. In addition, workers should be enabled to obtain further qualifications appropriate to the work they perform.

The new Dementia Units will help care providers comply with CQC regulations

What if a learner already has an NVQ in HSC?

The Required Specialist Dementia Units can be:

1 Dementia awareness (K)

2 The person centred approach to the care and support of the individual with dementia (K)

3 Implement a person centred approach to the care and support of the individual with dementia (S)

Optional

4 Understanding approaches to enabling rights and choices, while protecting individuals with dementia from harm (K)

5 Recognise the impact of diversity, equality and inclusion on the experience of dementia (K)

K = Knowledge unit | can be undertaken by learners before or while they are working with people with dementia

S = Skills unit | only appropriate to those who are currently providing care and support to individuals

2 Understand the role of communication and positive interaction with individuals who have dementia (K)

4 Understand the diversity of individuals with dementia and the importance of inclusion (K)

5 Work with individuals with dementia in a way which celebrates diversity and equality (S)

7 Implementing approaches to enabling individuals with dementia to experience wellbeing (S)
