Getting the Best MS CareDiagnosis and treatment of a complex disease, like multiple sclerosis, is tricky. MS is varied in its symptoms and level of disability for each person, so it is critically important to know that your doctor has the right knowledge and expertise to effectively treat each individual case.
Despite how long you have been living with MS, asking the right questions of your doctor can help lead to optimal care and treatment. While living in a more urban area might afford more opportunities for seeking MS treatment from a doctor with a specialty in the disease, people in less populated regions do not have to settle for a lesser experience with their neurologist or other personal physician.
How do you know if you are getting good care? As you seek a doctor, consider asking some questions to help you better understand their practice.
1. How many patients with MS do you see a year?2. Do you favor one treatment option, or do
you consider all of them based on a person’s type of MS?
3. Do you offer specialty referrals if needed, such as urology, psychology, ophthalmology, or pain management?
4. How often does your office return calls? Who will call me back when I have a question or a medical issue?
5. Are you involved in any MS research or clinical trials?
6. Are you affiliated in any way with the National MS Society? If not, are you interested in receiving some professional information from them on MS?
While this does not cover every question that might be relevant for you, these can help provide basic understanding about how well-versed and knowledgeable your doctor might be in MS. Many people with MS see primary care physicians for their MS care when a neurologist is not available nearby. If your physician does not have many patients with MS, the National MS Society can provide him/her with professional education, consultations with MS specialists, and literature specific to health care professionals.
Please call the National MS Society at 800.344.4867 for neurologist referrals, to obtain materials for your current doctor, or to helping formulate the questions that will give you the best access to care today.
MS Physician Consultation Program If you have an MS or possible MS diagnosis, have a restrictive HMO or other type of insur-ance, are having issues either getting a confirmed diagnosis or a solid treatment plan, or live in a geographic area where access to an MS specialist is not available, you might be eligible for a one-time consult with an MS specialty neurologist. Please call Audra Hindes at 800.344.4867 to learn more about this important program.

Intro to Qigong
In Los Angeles County
There are many forms of Qigong. They all share the idea that we can improve our health by paying systematic attention to our breathing, physiology, and attitude. “Qi” is defined as breath, or vital energy, or life essence, and “Gong” is defined as study, exercise, or work. Thus Qigong means “the disciplined study of breath.” These are truly powerful self-healing techniques. They are easy to do, and stretch and tone the body in a very simple way.
Chinese medical theory is based on the idea that our bodies want to be healthy, that we have an innate set of mechanisms that help us resist infection, repair injury, and fight disease.
Featured presenter: Several years ago, Michael Sieverts experienced a severe illness. Under the direction of Master Wen Mei Yu at UCLA, Michael was inspired to learn and subsequently teach healing forms of Qi Gong. He experienced first-hand how the practices can improve one’s health and may restore the proper functioning of all the body’s systems, including the immune system. He currently studies with Master Tang Wei-Zhong at UCLA and teaches classes in Santa Monica to cancer survivors at the Wellness Community in West LA, weSPARK in Sherman Oaks and Cedars-Sinai.

Get the Emotional Support You Need
Life is stressful enough. Family responsibilities, career obligations — even the everyday grind of battling rush-hour traffic, racing to the supermarket and getting the laundry done — can contribute to raising our anxiety level. When you add in the responsibility of caring for a loved one with a chronic illness, life can
sometimes seem overwhelming. Talking and sharing with others can alleviate some of the stress and isolation that we sometimes feel.
Join us Monday evenings via teleconference and connect with others with similar experiences, share resources and receive information that can help you support your loved one.
