Dear Friends
Recently I had to deliver a lecture at Palanpur on protection of natural resources and need
to beautify towns and villages, by planting beautiful Indian trees. The Collector of Banaskantha,
(Palanpur is the district headquarter of Banaskantha district in North Gujarat), Mr. Rambhai
Patel is a great tree-lover. He has planted a number of trees in remote areas and has also
motivated a number of individuals to plant and protect trees. He presented me with a book,
‘Heritage Trees of Gujarat, ‘ a publication of the Gujarat Forest department. The book shows
ancient trees in different parts of Gujarat. Palanpur was once famous for Lions and Hunting
Leopards. According to an article in JBNHS, Vol. 34(1930), the last lions outside Gir were shot
near Deesa in 1878 and near Palanpur in 1880. The article further states that Lions disappeared
from Palamau in 1814, Vadodra in 1832, Hariana in 1834, Ahmedabad in 1856, Sind in 1842,
Damoh in 1847, Rava in 1866, Gwalior in 1865, Abu in 1872, and Goona in 1872. Today Hunting
Leopards have disappeared from India, but once Palanpur, Sanchor and Halwad were famous
for their fine breed of Cheetahs or Hunting Leopards. According to Manekshah S. Commiserate
(author of History of Gujarat, Vol. I 1938, Vol. II 1957), Cheetahs of Palanpur were in great
demand in the Cheetahkhanas of Mogul courts. A number of them were sent by the Palanpur
ruler every year. In 1868, Emperor Aurangzeb wrote to Shujjatkhan, the Suba of Gujarat about
delay in sending pairs of Cheetahs. The ruler of Palanpur, Kamalkhan at once made an arrangement
to send several pairs. Kamalkhan also created Dilkhusha baug in Palanpur where he planted a
large number of Bakul trees, a few of them have survived till date. I also visited Balaram to see
the 500 years old Arjun trees. In the nearby Balaram Palace, which was once a hunting lodge of
the Nawab of Palanpur; late Dr. Salim Ali had stayed and studied the migratory and other birds
in the forest around. Late Nawab Taley Muhamed Khan of Palanpur was a great tree lover and
had planted a large number of Neem trees in Palanpur town and the surrounding area, and had
also saved old trees in the Balaram forest. From Palanpur I proceeded to Jodhpur in Rajasthan
where I saw Ragat Rohida trees in full bloom in the semi desert areas around Jodhpur. Those
visiting Rajasthan during this part of the year should not miss this beautiful tree fully laden
with orange flowers. Soon, another popular tree of Rajasthan, North Gujarat and Sind, Flame
of the Forest trees will be in full bloom during Phagun and in many areas flowers of the Flame
of the Forest trees will present a spectacle of bright orange colour.

Honorary Secretary, BNHS

CEC CITIZEN SCIENCE PROJECT: BE A SCIENTIST FOR A DAY !
We would like to thank you all for the overwhelming response for the “Be A Scientist for A Day” programme held in
January and February 2011 and are glad to announce that we have started accepting registrations for forth coming

plants, birds, insects (including moths), reptiles and amphibians. These surveys are carried out by experts from the field;
however we have kept it open for amateurs too so that they could learn about scientific methods of documentation.
As a participant, one will learn to observe record and analyze the data in a scientific manner. This will
sharpen one’s analytical and observation skills, which are useful for wildlife studies. One will learn to use field guides,
data sheets and GPS gadget. The survey will address three research parameters; species diversity, species abundance

JUNGLE CAMPS FOR FAMILIES7th - 8th May 2011
With the pace of life, unbearable traffic and simply insufficient avenues to experience nature, families in the big cities oftenresort to television, malls and other truly urban forms of recreation. The spin off from these activities is that the children aregetting more disconnected from Nature with each passing year. Their immunity drops, minds remain less challenged andthere’s enough research to show that even their self-esteem takes a significant knock! Here in Jungle Camps, you can experience Nature through various activities that are designed for the whole family. Enjoytrekking, family plot study, treasure hunt, cooking in wild, rappling, rock climbing and more. So gift your family a pack of fresh
air and fun filled activities by enrolling in the camp
