Year 5 Homework - Autumn 2

Topic projectOur topic this half-term is focused on The Mayans and Space.We would like children to design and make a 3D model of a planet in our solar system. We would like children to use recyclable materials as creatively as possible. Alongside their 3D model, we would also like children to write a detailed fact-file about their chosen planet.

This project should be handed in the last week of half-term! We look forward to seeing your creations!

ReadingReading is a non-negotiable part of Year 5 homework. Children are expected to read their

home reader every day and with an adult for at least 10-15 mins. A parent comment in their reading record is expected to be logged whenever they read with an adult (at least twice a

week). Half-termly rewards will be given to children showing they are reading regularly at home. Pupils are also expected to complete a book review to a high standard as part of

homework when they have finished reading their book.

Parents can help children with their comprehension of their home readers by questioning them on what they have read.

Here are some examples of questions adults can use to talk to their child about the book they have read.

● What happened in the story?● Where does the story take place?● Does the layout of the text have an impact on the reader?● Is this book similar to any others you have read?● Can you create a timeline of events for the book?● What genre does this book belong to?● Which words/phrases particularly stand out to you? Why?● Who do you think the book is aimed at? Why?● What made you choose this book?● Find examples of unfamiliar vocabulary. What do you think they mean? ● What questions would you ask the author about the text?● Is there a section of the text you don’t understand?● Can you predict what will happen in the next chapter/end of the story etc.?● What impression does the author want you to have of the character? What makes you say

this?● Why do you think ____ has acted in this way?● Describe the main character. Use evidence from the text to justify your opinions.

● Can you create a quiz about the book for other pupils in the school?Spellings

You will receive a sheet of weekly spellings on a Thursday that you must practice at home - you do not need to return the sheet. These spellings are expected to be learnt off by heart. Children should use

different strategies to practise these words.For example:

Look, Cover, Say, Write, CheckUsing the word in a sentence - can children use the sentence types they have used in our English lessons

e.g. relative clauses, fronted adverbial, .Pyramid spellings

ArithmeticThis half-term, you must practise using the four operations in math (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), as well as your times tables. These operations are vital to the Year 5 and Year 6 curriculum, so it is essential that your child is confident in using them.
