Hello ASHRAE members and welcome
to the 2018-2019 ASHRAE Year! I am
truly honored to serve as your Chapter
President this year. There have been
so many great Past Presidents for our
Chapter that have created such a high
standard that I will hope to live up to.
Joining me on the Board of Governors
is Chris Hawk (President Elect), Chris
Beaty (Secretary), Jake Kopocis
(Treasurer), Aaron Rasell (1st Board
Member) and Dave Kros (2nd Board
Member). We have many returning and
new committee chairs which we will be
highlighting in the upcoming months.
We really do have a great team of lead-
ers here to help and support all of you.
I would like to extend a special thanks
to Tom Lewis, our immediate Past Pres-
ident, for all the hard work and commit-
ment in leading our Chapter and being a
mentor for me.
There have been a couple ASHRAE
activities since we last met in May:
The Annual ASHRAE Golf Outing
had another successful year at Iron
Horse Golf Club in June.
ASHRAE Annual Conference in
Houston, TX in June.
The Board met for a kickoff and
planning meeting in July.
The last event was the Chapter Region-
al Conference (CRC) which was held
last month in Sioux Falls, SD. I am
proud to report that the Nebraska
Chapter was able to return home
with many Honors and Awards.

In the 2018 ASHRAE Student Design
Competition the University of Nebraska
team was awarded First place in the
HVAC Design Calculations category. A
big congratulations to the students, fac-
ulty advisors and mentors that were part
of the competition! See everyone that
was involved further back in the News-
letter.
We have a great group of energetic
leaders to help keep our Chapter thriv-
ing, but we are continuously interested
in new volunteers to join in. We are
looking for individuals to serve as
chairs, co-chairs, or in supporting roles
for committees or special chapter
events. These are great opportunities
to join and learn from a committed and
dedicated team of highly talented indi-
viduals. These roles also give the op-
portunity to learn leadership skills and
make lasting relationships while serving
our members. I can’t stress enough the
satisfaction you receive from serving. If
you would like to be a part of these
teams, please contact me at
[email protected]. If you
have shown interest and we haven’t
found a place for you, PLEASE contact
me so we can talk.
Regards,
Shaun Nienhueser

STUDENTS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA-LINCOLN WON FIRST PLACE IN THE 2018 ASHRAE HVAC DESIGN CALCULATIONS CATEGORY
This year’s competition focused on a new 70,000 square foot (6,500 square meter), four story mixed use complex north of Is-tanbul, Turkey near Arnavutkoy which is just south of the new international airport. The facility featured retail and office spac-es, a restaurant, and a hotel in support of the upcoming rapid growth in the area when the airport is completed in 2019. The team consisted of Jack Buckley, Madeline Sampsel, Austin Seagren and Christopher Wozny. Faculty advisors are Joe Hazel (HDR), Dan Karnes (Leo A Daly), and David Yuill (University of Ne-braska). The team selected a heat recovery chiller in conjunction with a geothermal loop field as the primary system for the building. The geothermal loop is a sustainable ap-
proach for cooling and heating that can easily be hidden from occupant view un-der a parking lot. The geothermal heat recovery chiller provides efficient, flexible means of producing heating or chilled due to three operating modes available through the virtual endcap. The project along with those placing in the other competition categories will be shared during the 2019 ASHRAE Winter Conference, Jan. 12-16 in Atlanta. The Winter Conference is held in conjunction with the ASHRAE co-sponsored AHR Ex-po, which will be Jan. 14-16 at the Geor-gia World Congress Center. For a full list of Student Design Competi-tion winners (First, Second, Third and Ris-ing Star), please visit the Design Competi-tion Winners page on ashrae.org.
