  • 01 STARTUP CITY

  • Start Up City is a response to the tragic nature of Istanbuls growing housing problem. Many skilled an unskilled workers from across Turkey (and the world) come to Istanbul every year in search of a better life.

Start Up City is a play on words, not only can it serve as a place for workers to start a new life, but entrepreneurs to start new business endeavors. A stable infrastructure is laid across the entire site serving as a service platform for fl exible modular living units above. The site is assembled and

dismantled as needed. Public transit, energy generation, vehicular traffi c, parking, construction and all service needs of the city are tucked underneath a walkable datum that stitches the site back to its surroundings. With all this said, the heart and soul of Start Up City is in its social agenda, the fact that a rural worker can come to Istanbul with nothing, and though interactions and a proper support system, can build a new life. With time he himself becomes the entrepreneur and leave his own positive mark on the city, helping others along the way.

    COMPUTATIONINSTALLATIONGRAPHIC DESIGN

  • Supermodel City III is a continuous studio exploration with Keith Kaseman of KBAS Studios. The project aimed to realize new ways of thinking of the city and urban fabric using computational tools to arrive at initial spatial constructs rich with information and data derived from conditions imputed from various already existing urban environments around the world.

This fi eld of data and potential space was later used as a backbone for specifi c architectural and urban instigations that were designed and reinserted back into the initial input conditions originally fed into the defi nition. Urban Instigations

aimed at understanding how currently obsolete large scale infrastructural moves could provide opportunities for development of characteristic local urban facilities from the smallest scale of a humble bike rack all the way to a hanging multi layered recreational urban pathways across the city.

Various initial instigations of over bearing and often seemingly unnecessary infrastructure serve as a framework for a component based network of urban opportunities that allow a city to grow on its own pace and resolve its growth and expansion problems over time.

  • The Storefront for Art an Architecture is a non-profi t organization committed to the advancement of innovative positions in architecture, art and design. Since its inception it has lost its radical edge and become domesticated as a respected institution.

The Forefront is an attempt to mobilize the Storefront for Art and Architecture as a guerilla pop up exhibit facilitator, broadening the reach of Storefront and engaging new audiences outside the common design community.

The challenge of the Forefront is creating a temporal space that hosts the same interesting spatial opportunities that make the current Storefront facade by Steven Holl and Vito Acconci special.

The design solution was a modular system of prismatic collapsible units that can be projected on and rearranged to create urban furniture, enclosures or any other event instigation necessary in a parasitic and viral relationship with the city and other institutions of design.

  • TILE PATTERN HAFIZ TOMB

Yaseen Educational Foundation is an exploration into cross programing attempting to understand if an Islamic Center can function in unison with a housing typology. The fundamental motivation for this clash of programs was to establish a more or less fi nancially sustainable solution to the current model for non-profi t religious organizations. This fell in the shadows as the project became more about the social implications of living at a mosque. The already unrelenting needs of the typical housing project clashed with the seemingly particular architecture of an Islamic center, which many predicted would be a fatal cocktail.

The formal solution adopted aims to allow for the best optimal space for both programs with one swift gesture. A solid mass pierced with two calculated voids which achieve two things: (1) allow secondary light and ventilation and (2) provide opportunities to house religious program in the leftover space not suitable for housing. Paradoxically, what seems like junk space crawling around the volume of the building is in fact the most articulated and dynamic space within the intersection...the exact kind of space you would want to achieve nearness to God.

  • SWARM PAVILION CELLULAR AUTOMATA TOWER

Swarm Pavilion was an exercise in creating infrastructural frames derived from behavior models inherited from birds and insects during fl ight.

These base behaviors were later manipulated with external forces adding and subtracting to the position of each particle with various trigonometric functions to create elaborate two-dimensional visualizations.

The fi nal stage of the project allowed these patterns to act in three dimensions, attracting towards each other to create a framed network.

CAT established a goal of arriving at three dimensional volume through the stacking and manipulating of a simple game of life or cellular automaton voxelation. Each cell in the system tends either towards an infected or neutral state, and triggers within the system create emergent patterns and trends that ripple through the array until the system tends towards stability. Localized negotiations result in self-organized patterns across the entire array. Our manipulations introduced curve forces intersecting this volume of the stack voxelation that changed the nature of the array.

  • Booby trap is an experiment in creating a moment of joy and whimsy in a city that often lacks it. In an effort to hack current urban infrastructure, temporary construction canopies were rigged with tensile nets made of nylon string and hung with glowing balloons, each with a gift inside (usually candy). Passerbys are encouraged to pull a tag that releases one balloon. Considering the covert nature of the project, considerations were made to design an installation that was rapidly deployable and minimally invasive to private or public property.

Memofoam is a modular prototype for an interactive beacon of helium foam. The Arduino micro-controller and processing software was used to rig a party balloon helium tank, a low voltage electronic valve, pressure sensor and a foam chamber.

By triggering the pressure sensor, the consistent stream of foam elevating into the sky is interrupted by the external infl uences of the user, as well as the environment.
