    Definition of stainless steels

"Stainless steel" is a collective term coveringover 120 different steel grades which share thefollowing properties:

They are alloyed with at least 10.5% chromi-um.

They are corrosion-resistant without any pro-

tective coating, forming an invisible surfacepassivation layer in the presence of oxygen.

    1. The thermal conductivity of austenitic steelsis lower to that of other steels (and moststainless steels are of the austenitic type). Asa result, the heat generated by the rotatingtool is not easily dissipated via the workpieceor the chips.

    2. Cutting speeds should be kept lower thanwith other steels, regardless of the machin-ing process used. The tool should not beapplied with excess pressure. Local overheat-ing may cause discoloration or distortion ofthe material, and thermal overloading of thetools would be a likely result.

    3. Abrasives designed for use on stainless steelsmust contain no elementary iron, whichmight form corrosive deposits in the work-piece. Similarly, to avoid such "extraneous"rust, a tool previously used on non-stainlesssteel should never be used on stainlessgrades.

    4. Chip particles from the workpiece ("sparks")may be transformed into non-stainless steelat the high temperatures developed duringmachining. Unless such particles are carefullyremoved, they too will cause extraneous ruston the workpiece surface.

Thorough chemical and/or mechanical cleaning(by etching, pickling, polishing, etc.) is there-fore indispensable to protect stainless steel

from extraneous surface corrosion. As long assuch cleaning is carefully performed and theworkpieces are kept away from non-stainlessgrades, the formation of extraneous rust onstainless steel is virtually impossible.

    Importance of stainless steels

In the modern world, stainless steels are findingtheir way into an increasing number of applica-tions. Their outstanding properties, e.g.,

    high resistance

    toughness

have given rise to a broad variety of uses.

In addition, new grades of these materials arebeing developed continuously for specificneeds.

Today, stainless steels have become indispens-able in a broad range of industries and applica-tions including

    chemical and petrochemical equipment.

    foodstuff processing vessels and machinery.

    process technology.

    pulp and paper processing.

    architecture (building fronts, handrails).

    power plant engineering.

    pump and turbine manufacturing.

shipbuilding (piping, containers). structural and mechanical engineering.

The particular characteristics of stainless steelsimpose specific requirements on the machiningand finishing tools used. Thus, most austeniticsteels are more difficult to machine than theirunalloyed counterparts due to their stickiness, edge build-up tendencies, and strain hardeningbehavior. On the other hand, the eco-friendli-ness of stainless steels - as expressed in theirdurability, corrosion resistance even whenuncoated, and recyclability - is a factor that hascontributed not least significantly to their evermore widespread use.

The PFERD tool range for use on stain-less steels

PFERD offers an extensive range of tools meet-ing the specific requirements of the stainlesssteel processor. Many of these tools were pur-pose-designed for this application; all havebeen found to give good results in everydaypractice.

    Tungsten carbide burrs

PFERD tungsten carbide burrs are excellent for

deburring, chamfering, rounding and generalgeometry adjusting work.

These burrs are available in numerous shapesand four cut types specifically for use on stain-less steel.

For maximum efficiency, they should beemployed at the appropriate speed using anair-powered or electric prime mover systems ofsufficient output . These tools can be veryadvantageously combined with flexible shaftdrives. A lightweight handpiece allows the burrto be controlled flexibly with minimum opera-tor fatigue, even in hard-to-reach areas.

Machining tasks involving tungsten carbideburrs are increasingly handled by robotized sys-tems, particularly in volume manufacturing. One advantage of PFERD tungsten carbideburrs is that the robot can use the same toolsthat are also used for freehand work, sincePFERD products are manufactured to close tol-erances and constant quality specifications.

In selecting the proper cut, the following princi-ples should be observed:

    1. Cut fineness should increase with workpiecehardness and brittleness.

    2. A finer cut may compensate to some extentfor insufficient machine speed.

The machine speeds needed for tungsten car-bide burrs vary between 6000 and 50000r.p.m., depending on tool size.

For countersinking work with a 360 angle of

wrap and in stationary machines, lower speedsmay be used by way of exception. Useabsolutely true-running chucks only, since toolchatter and out-of-roundness will result in pre-mature wear and reduced surface quality.

    Features

    1. The tungsten carbide material and recom-

mended cut geometries of these tools areoptimized for use on stainless steel.

    2. PFERD tungsten carbide burrs are particularlywear-resistant and durable; they can also bere-ground.

As a result, these products provide

smooth and uniform stock removal (nick-freecutting edges provided).

    good chip removal.

    quiet, chatter-free operation.

convenient tool control and reduced opera-tor fatigue.

    high surface qualities.

    3. In certain cases, tungsten carbide burrs canbe supplied with a coating which protects

against abrasive wear while reducing theheat load on the workpiece (refer toHICOAT coatings).

    Recommended cutting speeds:

    Cut 1 300-450 m/min

    Cut 3 250-350 m/min

    Cut 3 PLUS 250-350 m/min

    Cut 4 250-350 m/min

    Fine-Grinding Tools

    11

    Fan grinders

The laminae holding the abrasive grain are

arranged like a fan around the shaft of these

    tools.

Depending on contact pressure and operatingspeed, fan grinders can achieve high stockremoval rates or, alternatively, produce verysmooth surfaces with reduced materialremoval.

The operating speed limits imposed for safetyreasons lie comfortably above the optimumspeed for most grinding applications.

The slit laminae of the fan grinder brushes adapteasily to both concave and convex workpiececontours.

Diverse roughness levels required for functionalor visual reasons can thus be easily produced.

    A-INOX types

Designed specifically for stainless steels andhigh-temperature alloys, these grinderscombine high stock removal rates with non-loading performance.

Silicon Carbide C typesThe high hardness and sharpness of SiC grainminimizes thermal loads, thus avoiding heatbuild-up and cracking in high-alloy steels.

    Flap wheels

Flap wheels can be used in conjunction withhigh-powered drive units to remove coarse sur-face irregularities (e.g., in weld dressing).

They are principally designed to produce homo-geneous finishes on larger surfaces and con-tours by freehand grinding (i.e., matt finishing).

Used at the right speed, these tools can createan extra-fine surface finish that is an ideal start-ing point for subsequent polishing or buffingoperations. They are likewise suitable for robot-ized processes and stationary machines.

In the newly designed mounting system theflanges are fully recessed in the flap wheel.

This is advantageous inasmuch as the wheelface can be brought up almost flush againstthe material when working near edges or cor-ners.

A-INOX typesFor efficient grinding on stainless steel, fromcoarse to fine. The abrasive performance of theflap wheel is greatly enhanced by active fillers.

A typesSuitable for universal fine-grinding applicationson stainless steel grades.

    POLIVLIES non-woven discs PV

POLIVLIES abrasive discs are highly flexible.

They are suitable for surface grinding on thin-walled materials. These discs are commonlyused in conjunction with the flexible plasticbacking pad GT 178 OF M 14 (refer toCatalogue 209), e.g., in tank and pressure ves-sel manufacturing.

Their recommended peripheral speed on stain-less steels lies between 35 and 45 m/s (achiev-able with low-r.p.m. angle grinders).

PV types (tissue backed)The abrasive material on these discs is a medi-um-grit aluminium oxide (A type).
