8:00am Holy Communion

10:30am Parish Communion*

The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.

Opening Hymn*

1. Come, let us join our cheerful songs

with angels round the throne;

ten thousand thousand are their tongues,

but all their joys are one.

2. ‘Worthy the Lamc that died,’ they cry,

‘to be exalted thus’;

‘Worthy the Lamb,’ our lips reply,

‘for he was slain for us.’

3. Jesus is worthy to receive

honour and power divine;

and blessings, more than we can give,

be, Lord, for ever thine.

4. Let all that dwell above the sky,

and air, and earth, and seas,

conspire to lift thy glories high,

and speak thine endless praise.

5. The whole creation joins in one

to bless the scared name

of him that sits upon the throne,

and to adore the Lamb.

Words: From Revelation 5.11-13, Isaac Watts (1674-1748)

Music: Nativity, Henry Lahee (1826-1912)

(Ancient & Modern – 362)

Collect

Almighty Father,

who in your great mercy gladdened the disciples

with the sight of the risen Lord:

give us such knowledge of his presence with us,

that we may be strengthened and sustained by his risen life

and serve you continually in righteousness and truth;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever. Amen.

4

First Reading – Acts 9.1-6

Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the

high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he

found any who belonged to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to

Jerusalem. Now as he was going along and approaching Damascus, suddenly a light

from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to

him, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?’ He asked, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ The

reply came, ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. But get up and enter the city, and

you will be told what you are to do.’

Second Reading – Revelation 5.11-14*

I, John, looked, and I heard the voice of many angels surrounding the throne and the

living creatures and the elders; they numbered myriads of myriads and thousands of

thousands, singing with full voice, ‘Worthy is the Lamb that was slaughtered to

receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honour and glory and blessing!’

Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the

sea, and all that is in them, singing, ‘To the one seated on the throne and to the

Lamb be blessing and honour and glory and might for ever and ever!’ And the four

living creatures said, ‘Amen!’ And the elders fell down and worshipped.

Gradual Hymn*

1. Love’s redeeming work is done;

fought the fight, the battle won:

lo, our Sun's eclipse is o'er,

lo, he sets in blood no more.

2. Vain the stone, the watch, the seal;

Christ has burst the gates of hell;

death in vain forbids his rise;

Christ has opened paradise.

3. Lives again our glorious King;

where, O death, is now thy sting?

dying once, he all doth save;

where thy victory, O grave?

4. Soar we now where Christ has led,

following our exalted Head;

made like him, like him we rise;

ours the cross, the grave, the skies.

5. Hail the Lord of earth and heaven!

Praise to thee by both be given:

thee we greet triumphant now;

hail, the Resurrection Thou!

Words: Charles Wesley (1707-1788) Music: Savannah, melody from Herrnhut collection, c1740,

in John Wesley’s A Collection of Tunes, Set to Music, As they are commonly sung at the Foundry 1742

(Ancient & Modern – 209)

Gospel – John 21.1-19

Jesus showed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and he showed

himself in this way. Gathered there together were Simon Peter, Thomas called the

Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his

disciples. Simon Peter said to them, ‘I am going fishing.’ They said to him, ‘We will go

with you.’ They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

Just after daybreak, Jesus stood on the beach; but the disciples did not know that it

was Jesus. Jesus said to them, ‘Children, you have no fish, have you?’ They answered

him, ‘No.’ He said to them, ‘Cast the net to the right side of the boat, and you will

find some.’ So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in because there

were so many fish. That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, ‘It is the Lord!’

When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on some clothes, for he was

naked, and jumped into the lake. But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging

the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, only about a hundred yards

off. When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it, and

bread. Jesus said to them, ‘Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.’ So Simon

Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-

three of them; and though there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to

them, ‘Come and have breakfast.’ Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, ‘Who

are you?’ because they knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and

gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time that

Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. When they had

finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me

more than these?’ He said to him, ‘Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to

him, ‘Feed my lambs.’ A second time he said to him, ‘Simon son of John, do you love

me?’ He said to him, ‘Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Tend

my sheep.’ He said to him the third time, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ Peter

felt hurt because he said to him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’ And he said to

him, ‘Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed

my sheep. Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your

own belt and go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out

your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you

do not wish to go.’ He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would

glorify God. After this he said to him, ‘Follow me.’

6

Offertory Hymn*

1. Come, ye faithful, raise the anthem,

cleave the skies with shouts of praise;

sing to him who found the ransom,

Ancient of eternal Days,

God of God, the Word incarnate,

whom the heaven of heaven obeys.

2. Ere he raise the lofty mountains,

formed the seas, or built the sky,

love eternal, free, and boundless,

moved the Lord of life to die,

fore-ordained the Prince of princes

for the throne of Calvary.

3. There, for us and our redemption,

see him all his life-blood pour!

There he wins our full salvation,

dies that we may die no more;

then, arising, lives for ever,

reigning where he was before.

4. High on yon celestial mountains

stands his sapphire throne, all bright,

midst unending alleluias

bursting from the sons of light;

Zion's people tell his praises,

victor after hard-won fight.

5. Bring your harps, and bring your incense,

sweep the string and pour the lay;

let the earth proclaim his wonders,

King of that celestial day;

he the Lamb once slain is worthy,

who was dead, and lives for ay.

6. Laud and honour to the Father,

laud and honour to the Son,

laud and honour to the Spirit,

ever Three and ever One,

consubstantial, co-eternal,

while unending ages run.

Words: Job Hupton (1762-1849) & John Mason Neale (1818-1866)

Music: Unser Herrscher, Melody set to Unser Herrscher in Alpha und Omega, Joachim Neander (1650-1680),

harmony based on William Henry Monk (1823-1889)

(Ancient & Modern – 619)

Communion Anthem*

Lead me, Lord, lead me in thy righteousness, make thy way plain before my face.

For it is thou, Lord, thou, Lord, only, that makest me dwell in safety.

Words: Psalms 5.8;4.9 Music: Samuel Sebastian Wesley (1810-1876)

Communion Hymns*

1. There is a Redeemer,

Jesus, God’s own Son,

precious Lamb of God, Messiah,

Holy One.

Thank you, O my Father,

for giving us your Son,

and leaving your Spirit

till the work on earth is done.

2. Jesus, my Redeemer,

Name above all names,

precious Lamb of God, Messiah,

O for sinners slain.

3. When I stand in glory,

I will see his face.

and there I’ll serve my King for ever

in that holy place.

Words: Keith Green (1953-1982) & Melody Green (b 1946)

Music: Melody Green (b 1946), arranged by Peter Moger (b 1964)

Post Communion Prayer

Living God,

your Son made himself known to his disciples

in the breaking of bread:

open the eyes of our faith,

that we may see him in all his redeeming work;

who is alive and reigns, now and for ever. Amen.

Final Hymn

1. Will you come and follow me if I but call your name?

Will you go where you don't know and never be the same?

Will you let my love be shown, will you let my name be known,

will you let my life be grown in you and you in me?

8

2. Will you leave yourself behind if I but call your name?

Will you care for cruel and kind and never be the same?

Will you risk the hostile stare should your life attract or scare?

Will you let me answer prayer in you and you in me?

3. Will you let the blinded see if I but call your name?

Will you set the prisoners free and never be the same?

Will you kiss the leper clean, and do such as this unseen,

and admit to what I mean in you and you in me?

4. Will you love the ‘you’ you hide if I but call your name?

Will you quell the fear inside and never be the same?

Will you use the faith you've found to reshape the world around,

through my sight and touch and sound in you and you in me?

5. Lord your summons echoes true when you but call my name.

Let me turn and follow you and never be the same.

In your company I'll go where your love and footsteps show.

Thus I'll move and live and grow in you and you in me.

Word: John L Bell (b 1949) & Graham Maule (b 1958)

April. A faculty would be sought for

repair and upgrade of the clock, and an

appeal for this would be launched after

the APCM. Discussions about the

boiler were still ongoing with the

engineer and architect, and it was

hoped to submit a faculty application

to the DAC before 18 April, and a

number of other minor fabric issues

were noted. A request for the banner

of Sir Jock Kennedy to be laid up in the

church (south transept) was approved,

subject to faculty. The APCM will be

on 24 April, when there will be

elections for two churchwardens and

two PCC members. Full minutes are

available on the noticeboard by the

North Door.

Help Needed

As you know, we take part in Christian

Aid Week each year. This year, our

treasurer has had to withdraw after some

years’ service, so we need a treasurer for

the period 15 to 24 May. This doesn’t

involve complicated accounts, but the

ability to count the coins donated, and pay

them into the bank. If you can help with

this importannt task, please ring Peter

Townsend on 759286, or leave a

message.
