This year’s festival will turn the city centre into a playground where a combined arts outdoor production will bring together the visual arts and performing

arts in a large scale immersive festival presented over two days and two evenings. We are working with Magnetic Events (Peterborough Enchanted City) and No fit State Circus (Open House) plus an array of other international street art companies.

Peterborough Enchanted City will illuminate the city centre and transform into a kaleidoscope of light and kick start a weekend of projection, performance, installation, sound and illumination. The Multimedia spectacular of light and sound installations will transform historical buildings such as the Guildhall into temporary artworks, telling stories, presenting cultures and enabling audiences to experience a new

exploration of the city and see it in a completely different light.

Magnetic Events and No Fit State Circus are companies with an international reputation for their extraordinary productions.

We would like to give a big thanks to all the volunteers who are giving up so much time over the Festival weekend this year working with No Fit State Circus and Magnetic events, without whose commitment none of this would be possible. We would also like to thank our sponsors BGL and Peterborough Presents… who are vital in sustaining the Arts Festival and keeping it free for audiences, Vivacity has to raise approximately £100,000 per year for the Festival. Trash DollysCape AlleyEnter Cape Alley, a nether world of beautiful dereliction where a rag tag band of outlaws dance to their own strange tune. Blending dance and theatre forms to create visually striking and captivating work, Trash Dolly’s are expressive and dynamic performers who forge fantastical storytelling with striking physicality. Cape Alley was developed at Sadlers Wells as part of the Breakin Conventions Back to The Lab. BalloonaticThis wonderful balloon-art street act helps transform every event into a carnival, party atmosphere. Decorating people with incredible hats, giant costumes and hilarious balloon toys gets everyone laughing and they will even amaze passers-by with their astonishing models. They are undisputedly the UK’s most extravagant balloon artists.

Stickleback PlasticusCat LitterUsing comedy, puppetry, song and improvisation, these furry felines will bring catnip joy to all audiences. From oversized rubbish bins, our mischievous cats reflect on their lives, mice, milkmen, food,

and the death of Fat Bob. Nothing, and no-one, passes these mischievous cats by without comment.

Whalley Range All StarsPIGCome and see Gloria, a 30 foot long sleeping sow in a pen. You can see her snuffling, opening and closing her eyes, and hear her snoring. A farm-hand invites ten people at a time into the pen to

take a peek at a 10-minute long, unexpected piece of theatre inside her belly. PIG has captured the imagination of

audiences all over the world and attracts crowds curious to discover what’s going on inside. TV crews have flown from as far afield as Seoul and Miami to film the show, designed as a family show; suitable for all ages 4-and-above.

The Bruce Airhead ShowThe metamorphosis of a man and a six-foot balloon. Bruce Airhead, with a volunteer, uses a voice-activated vacuum cleaner to inflate a six foot balloon. Then to the crowd’s disbelief, wearing only brightly coloured lycra shorts and choreographed to music, Bruce slides inside the balloon. First his head, then his torso, until finally the last leg slowly disappears from sight. Once inside, Bruce dances the balloon to a fast changing sequence of music. Watch out for the explosive finish.

No fit State Circus

Open houseOPEN HOUSE is an immersive, ever-evolving large-scale circus installation

where anything can happen and everything becomes an excuse for performance and spectacle. Flowing through the town and setting up in

the city centre, unfolding deckchairs, flags, umbrellas and unveiling specialist circus structures. There is no big top, but a colony

of musicians, acrobats and aerialists exploding out of caravans - a joyous menagerie

of circus chaos, bringing the town to life.

Magnetic Events: Enchanted City FOR TWO NIGHTS, THE CITY CENTRE WILL BE TURNED INTO A KALEIDOSCOPE OF LIGHT AND KICK START A

WEEKEND OF PROJECTION, PERFORMANCE, INSTALLATION, SOUND AND ILLUMINATION.

The multimedia spectacular of light and sound sculptures will transform historical buildings such as the Guildhall into temporary artworks,

telling stories, presenting cultures and enabling audiences to share experiences and a new exploration of the city so they see it (literally!) in a completely different light. Peterborough Enchanted City is an innovative outdoor programme co-created with community groups working with the artistic teams from Magnetic Events and The Projection Studio who will curate the programme. Magnetic Events is a company with an international reputation who has worked on projects such as lighting Buckingham Palace for the Queen’s Jubilee and the Houses of Parliament for the London Olympics.

Vivacity’s Festival Manager Sheena Carman explains: ‘They’re kind of temporary artworks, projected onto the buildings, so people will be able to see the city centre in a completely different way. And, as in previous years, we’ll be working with different communities to create these temporary artworks. Everything that is projected is created by people in Peterborough, by the community.’

Magnetic Events will be projecting on the Friday and Saturday nights, between about 7.30pm and 10.30pm. There’ll be plenty of opportunity for other public interaction and involvement.

Magnetic Events and Vivacity have been working with St Johns Church, Peterborough Youth Offending Team, Paston Community Centre, POSH Football Club, Ugandan Asian Society, and local artists to create the projections in the city centre, a big thank you to all participants including all the people who sent in selfies!

Robin Morley, director of Magnetic Events on Peterborough: Enchanted CityWhat will you be bringing to Peterborough for the Festival?First of all, it’s not just about what we’re bringing, but what we’re creating in Peterborough with Peterborough people. We’ve been asking people: ‘Did you

know Peterborough is an enchanted city?’ and we’ve had a great response to that question. So what we’re doing is creating an amazing, immersive two-evening event on that theme, working with a whole range of groups from across the city to create a series of projections in the city centre which will be entertaining, exciting and challenging. It’s a massive Peterborough spectacular, projected onto the Guildhall and St John’s church – very large, very bright projection pieces. Ross Ashton, who I work with, is a world-renowned projection artist who has projected onto the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace and a whole range of other extraordinary places, including a Hindu temple in India.

What will those projections consist of?They will feature the voices and the faces of local people – video, still images, colours and sound – running continuously. Peterborough Presents... and Vivacity are working with us to create a programme of hundreds of selfies of people from Peterborough. In essence, Cathedral Square will become a huge smartphone onto which these are projected. It’s Peterborough’s selfie of the city! It will be funny, it will be interesting, and you will discover things you don’t know about Peterborough... It’s also a chance to come into the centre and have fun – to bring family and friends and enjoy the show.

It sounds like it has a documentary element...It’s definitely got a documentary element to it. It’s contemporary – so it’s got portraits of residents, young

and old. We’re also looking at the archives of 40 Years On from the Museum, and revealing things from the past that people may not know about. All this will lead into discovering some of the extraordinary characters in Peterborough.

How important is it that it’s by, and about, the people themselves?It’s fundamental. It is about a sense of pride, a sense of belonging – and also transforming the everyday into the extraordinary. Along the way we’ll be celebrating the life of Peter Boizot, as Pizza Express celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. We’re also working with the fans of Peterborough United, to create a wonderful portrait of fans of all ages – including a four month-old baby wearing a POSH strip!

Is it always exciting for you, seeing these spectacular events unfold?Yes, it is – and what will be exciting will be the responses of people watching. Some may be seeing themselves, or people they know. And some of those portraits will morph into others, and one of the things we’re asking people to do is getting people to photograph their pets, because we know cats and dogs are part of the family! So, you might have a portrait of a dog owner morphing into the face of their dog...

We’re really looking forward to hearing people’s reaction to it because we’ll be planning a programme for

2016, after the Arts Festival. We will invite people to post their experiences – including pictures and videos from the

event – onto Facebook, Twitter and other social media, we’ll invite them to make comments back to local media, and also there will be the digital record of the projection which will go onto the Facebook site as well. So there will be a huge scrapbook of the event, and we hope to capture with that people’s feeling on how we can further develop the project next year and for the next Arts Festival.

PETERBOROUGH PRESENTS… IS A CONSORTIUM OF LOCAL ARTISTS, ARTS ORGANISATIONS AND COMMUNITIES WORKING TOGETHER TO CREATE GREAT ART IN OUR CITY.

SELFIE PROJECT Cathedral Square and Bridge Street will undergo a magical metamorphosis for Peterborough Arts Festival this year. Peterborough Presents has commissioned Magnetic Events to create an Enchanted City, featuring a series of projections that will contain up to 300 selfies submitted by local people. The projections will illuminate glass and brickwork in and around Cathedral Square against an autumnal night sky.

By great, we mean art that is new, diverse and, most importantly, relevant to local residents. This will be achieved through developing

new networks, programming new arts activities and delivering large scale events that reach wide audiences.

Peterborough Presents… is the city’s Creative People & Places programme, supported by ACE, PCC and NNF Bridge, and led by Vivacity in a consortium with Creative Peterborough, Metal, Step Up Community Association and Voluntary Arts.

Magnetic Events have been working alongside local visual artist Luke Payn to devise the optical feast, which will be dusted with influences of pop-art. In preparation for the Harvest Festival weekend on 19th and 20th September, arts organisation Metal are inviting you to their pop-up Café and

Harvest Bakery to have a go at baking bread and sharing family recipes. You can book onto a free hour-long workshop to bake your own loaf or just drop in to watch a demonstration over tea and cake.

Craft-collective Handmade in Peterborough will also be showing people how to make straw-plaited napkin rings that will later be used for the Harvest Meal on 20th September.

About Harvest: On the 19th and 20th September, Metal will be presenting Harvest, a cultural

festival of the land, in Cathedral Square. The city centre will be filled with the sights, sounds, tastes, smells, songs and dances of the countryside. It will include the reinstatement of a food and craft market in St John’s Square; new Harvest themed artworks by leading UK artists; and Morris, Molly and cultural dancing supported by a host of Harvest buskers. On Saturday evening, a ‘Harvest Wain’ procession will weave its way up Bridge Street to kick start an ‘alternative barn dance’ from 7pm - a free evening of foot stomping folk rhythms from around the world headlined by The Turbans.

On Sunday, in Cathedral Square, international artists Lucy + Jorge Orta will host a meal for 500 people - ‘70x7 The Meal’ is part of their international series of community dinners, and the first outdoor meal in the UK. Guests to the meal have been invited via a network of community ambassadors and a public lottery. Those not attending the Meal will also be able to sample the menu from nearby stalls.

Play Peterborough Now Or Never! is a playful new free App for mobile devices that takes people on an interactive ‘live art’ journey of discovery around the city to experience and engage with its public spaces in fresh, imaginative and fun ways and see a familiar environment in a new light. All Stars

PIGAcclaimed street arts Aficionados, Whalley Range All Stars, bring their international hit immersive theatre show, PIG, to Peterborough!

The 9m long sleeping sow, known as ‘Gloria,’ will provide 10 minute immersive shows to privileged audience members on Saturday and Sunday. The catch? Access to shows is through ten strategically placed udder-holes and audience members are encouraged to don ‘pig-tails’ for the event. Do not fear! An instructive farmer will be on hand to guide you through this most memorable experience!

PIG! Has not only been a hit with children and adults across the UK but ‘Gloria’ has garnered a following in far corners of the globe such as Taiwan, Belgium and Ireland.

Lea aged seven enthuses: ‘I’ve always just been to big theatres. But it was so much funnier to see the actors inside a pig.’

Anticipation for Gloria’s arrival has even garnered attention from the region’s poets, who have payed homage with odes and verses, which will be posted onto Gloria’s facebook page. We spoke to Whalley Range All Star’s HQ who offered some delightful stories about touring PIG!

‘People react to the show in pretty much the same way all over the world. In Taiwan they built a bamboo temple for the pig to lie in, in Spain a group of 100 people watched us put the show up as if it was a show, in France the audience can be very educated about street theatre and treat it the same as an indoor show…

…In Hungary they presented the show as part of a contemporary dance festival…in rural Primary Schools near Hastings we got up very early so that the children would arrive in the morning to find a giant pig asleep in their tiny school hall!’.

Circus

Open HouseOn Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 September, the city centre will be a riot of colour and high-energy performances as No Fit State Circus reveal their carnival of fun, Open House. Flowing through the town from Cathedral Square there will be an explosion of deckchairs, flags and umbrellas as a swarm of musicians, acrobats and aerialists fly out of caravans to create a joyous menagerie of circus chaos! This year audiences will also be invited to try their hand at circus skills as well as watch, laugh and be amazed by this free weekend of skilled circus performance.

Commissioned by Bristol City Council and Pavillion Dance South West, co-produced by Restaged and Swindon Dance.

Sam Amos, artistic director and choreographer of Trash Dollys, on Cape Alley Tell us about your show, Cape Alley...It’s a 20 minute outdoor show in the city centre – a brand new dance-theatre piece about four characters who enter and alleyway and create a sort of dream-like world for themselves, to escape the mundanity of their day-to-day life. It’s a very physical, theatrical show, rooted in breakdancing with some contemporary dance in the mix, but it’s also very bcharacter-driven, with a great narrative to it.

Where does the title come from?It’s actually from a Tom Waits lyric – he talks about an alleyway just at the end of this very corporate, busy avenue, where businessmen and women went to get away from their jobs. Kind of a hippie-like area that they could break away to.

How do you describe the feel of the show?We’ve always had a kind of folklore feel about our shows. Every time we put out a Q&A to the audience it always comes back telling us that the show has something quite mystical or fantastical about it. That’s trickled through into Cape Alley as well. I tried to avoid setting it in a specific era, too, so it’s a real mish-mash of everything.

Have shows like Britain’s Got Talent and Strictly brought about a resurgence of interest in dance?Absolutely. To be honest, it’s been really useful. I’m a break-dancer primarily, and I think that appeals to a general audience. But a few years ago, before Britain’s Got Talent was around, it was a lot harder to get audiences outside. They weren’t really

sure what they were going to see. But since those shows have started, they seem to have a lot more time for it and want to see it. We always get audience members now saying ‘That reminds of a bit from Strictly...’ which is cool, because they’re finding things in it that they can relate to what they’ve seen.

What was your personal journey into dance?I started in a youth company in Hereford, doing breakdancing classes once a week. Because they held annual shows, I got chucked in the deep end, performing almost from the get-go – from the age of nine or ten. Then I left when I was sixteen and joined a circus... I had been debating whether to go to dance school and had been going to dance classes at college for a couple of months, but then auditioned for this circus and did that instead! From there I worked with a few companies in Bristol and Newcastle, and then I started to experiment with my own work in about 2010 – and Trash Dollys came about in 2011. A less formal path into dance!

Was the circus a big influence on you?Absolutely. It was the first year they’d brought professional performers on board, outside of the family who ran it. It wasn’t like a typical dance company! It was very grass-roots, very hard work, and towards the end of the run we were only getting about three-four hours sleep a night, because we had to man the big top tent. It was a great work ethic. And the Festival has that kind of carny vibe.

Circus and street theatre certainly have much more interaction with the audience...I really like that aspect of outdoor shows. In the theatre you have that distance between yourselves and the audience, and don’t tend to see them most of the time because of the lights, but outside you’re really up close and can see the whites of their eyes! However, keeping the Festival free is a major fundraising challenge, our Arts Festival costs over £100,000 to produce each year. This sum is currently met by Vivacity and the generosity of individuals and local business.

We’re asking you the audience to help to secure the festival’s future.

A gathering of global flavours and exotic smells, this international food court invites you to enjoy the traditional delights of Caribbean,

The Food Fair also features a beer tent from Castor Ales Microbrewer. Established in 2009 and committed to making hand crafted beers, Castor Ales are enthusiastic about supporting local history, cultural and charitable events and is very pleased to be supporting the Peterborough Arts Festival.

Live entertainment throughout the weekend includes street theatre, children’s activities and a variety of music in Squeakers Corner ranging from Classical Ensemble, Ukulele, folk, Samba and pop music to steel drums. With all this plus art exhibition and craft tents, come and sample food and drink from around the world, alfresco dining with a twist and soak up the unique atmosphere.

Market on Long Causeway and Bridge StreetA diverse and exciting array of stalls selling crafts, spices and gifts on Friday, Saturday and Sunday which will stay open on Friday and Saturday evening, giving you the opportunity to wander though as you view Peterborough Enchanted City up till 10.30pm.

Whether it’s a Hand-Crafted piece of wood, a scarf that has caught your eye or a hand bag, the trade stands in the pedestrian zone of Long Causeway and Bridge Street will have something to attract the most discerning of visitors.

Hunt & Darton Cafe Hunt & Darton Cafe is a fully functioning cafe that blends art with the everyday. Creating a social and artistic hub where spontaneity and performance meet great food and drink. Jenny Hunt and Holly Darton expose the inner workings of their business by presenting everything as art – from the food served, the people serving, the décor and public display of their bank balance to the lovingly handpicked charity shop crockery.

Hunt & Darton Cafe encourages playful participation and meaningful social encounters through its alternative service from its hosts Hunt & Darton in their iconic fruit or veggie attire, offering comic interaction through their ‘set menu’ performances and themed day such as ‘you do-it day’ and ‘Community day’. At Hunt & Darton Cafe we are proud to satisfy appetites in more ways than one.

Hunt & Darton are a Live Art Collaboration between Jenny Hunt and Holly Darton. They have both practiced Art since graduating from Central Saint Martins in 2003 and been Working together for 8 years. Approaching Live Art from a Fine Art background, they have a persistent fetish within their practice to consistently re-assess the relationship with the audience, embracing awkward moments, risk taking and constantly trying to close the gap between performer and viewer, often opting for interactive performance in public places. PETERBOROUGH SINGS! WELCOMES THE 60-PIECE ROYAL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA TO THE BROADWAY THEATRE FOR CLASSICAL SPECTACULAR.

The second Peterborough Classic and Vintage Vehicle Show organised by Peterborough City Council is taking place on the Embankment on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th of September. This fun family event is free and also has a host of shopping opportunities, hot food stalls and entertainment. It starts at 10.30am on both days. Last year over 500 cars attended, it attracted an incredible variety of vehicles

from Jaguar, Triumph, Volkswagen, Fords, Ferrari’s and Rolls Royce’s to Morris Minor’s and Ford Anglia’s, proving there really is an appetite for events like this in the region. There will be something for all the family at the show - everyone is welcome. Proceeds from the sale of the show’s programme will be split between charities East Anglian Air Ambulance and Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund.

SOUNDS UNLIKELY, BUT EASTERN ANGLES HAD A RUNAWAY SUCCESS WITH PARKWAY DREAMS IN 2013. TO THE DELIGHT OF AUDIENCES, THE THEATRE COMPANY ARE RETOURING THE SHOW TO THE KEY THEATRE THIS AUTUMN.

Exploring the story behind the work of the Peterborough Development Corporation, Parkway Dreams uses authentic voices of those who worked

for the company and oversaw the city’s New Town transformation during the 1970s & 1980s. EastEnders writer Kenneth Emson has recreated the backroom story of the small historic Fenland city that turned into multi-cultural New Town all told through the eyes of Mary, Jack and Peter – a typical London ‘overspill family’. Packed with television game show spoofs, political satire, all interspersed with original and entertaining songs by Simon Egerton, including ‘It Never Rains

in Queensgate’, the show is a fascinating and funny insight into the development of a typical English New Town.

Parkway Dreams is a product of Eastern Angles’ Heritage Lottery Funded archive project Forty Years On in 2011. Volunteers spent over 6,000 hours conducting interviews, cataloguing archive material and sifting through council documents in order to gain an accurate picture of how the city of Peterborough has changed since 1968.

The company will be touring across the East of England starting in Ipswich before heading to the heart of Peterborough itself on 6th and 7th October and moving onto

numerous New Towns. If you missed it the first time round, or would love to revisit it again, this will be a brilliant opportunity to see a real gem in the Eastern Angles crown.
