Youth development is a process whichprepares young people to meet thechallenges of adolescence and adulthoodthrough a coordinated, progressive series ofactivities and experiences which help them tobecome socially, morally, emotionally,physically, and cognitively competent.

Definition of Youth Leadership

Based on Adolescent Employment ReadinessCenter, Childrens Hospital

Two-part working definition of youth leadershipYouth leadership is

(1) The ability to guide or direct others on a courseof action, influence the opinion and behavior of

other people, and show the way by going inadvance (Wehmeyer, Agran, & Hughes, 1998);

and

(2) the ability to analyze one's own strengthsand weaknesses, set personal andvocational goals, and have the self-esteem tocarry them out. It includes the ability toidentify community resources and use them,not only to live independently, but also to

establish support networks to participate incommunity life and to effect positive socialchange.
