The Silver Scan-Tool™ software provides onboard diagnostic functionalities according to SAE J1979, SAE J1939 and ISO 27145

Silver Scan-Tool™ – SAE J1699-3 OBDII Compliance Test Cases tool with log file data formatter

Applications:The Silver Scan-Tool™ has been

developed for OBDII, EOBD, HD-OBD and WWH-OBD diagnostics. It offers the comprehensive functionality re-quired for testing and diagnosing any electronic control module supporting these standards.

Basic functions:The Silver Scan-Tool™ sup-

ports ISO 9141-2, ISO 14230-4, ISO 15765-4 (CAN) as well as SAE J1850 PWM/VPW (Ford/General Motors). Functionality for SAE J1939 HD-OBD and ISO 27145 WWH-OBD (World-Wide Harmonized OBD) for trucks is part of the software.

Accordingly, all control units using these protocols can be diagnosed. These are generally emission-related control devices such as engine and transmission controllers or battery control modules of hybrid vehicles.

The OBDII/EOBD part supports all diagnostic functions (Service $01 to

Service $0A) defined by authorities as well as all sub-functions (PIDs). In addition to faults logged by the con-trol unit, various other measurement values can be read and displayed. Users can also read out the list of all supported services and PIDs from all OBDII-compliant control units in the vehicle.

HD-OBD and WWH-OBD data are arranged in functional groups such as: Readiness, Current Data, Fault Codes, Freeze Frames, Test Results, Tracking, IUMPR.

Extended functions:The Silver Scan-Tool™ is en-

hanced by an option allowing graphi-cal data display and analysis. Mea-surement values are displayed graphically and can be recorded and reloaded for analysis. Data can be ex-ported into several formats (e.g. CSV and MDF (DAT)) for use in other ap-plications. The Test Cycle Assistant allows reference driving cycles to be

read in from CSV files and to be traced back by an online speed sig-nal (i.e. via Scan-Tool Service $01, PID $0D).

A communication monitor func-tion gives the opportunity to follow the diagnostic communication in real-time. The user can set and save own message filters.

Beside the functions provided by the user interface the user can define sequences of diagnostic messages. Therefore the services are selectable out of predefined, standard-based lists and supplemented by parame-ters set by the user. The service lists contain the complete range of ser-vices defined in ISO 14229, ISO 14230 and SAE J1979. Additio nally raw messages can be sent to the CAN bus.

Hardware:K-line connections can be made

with a simple level-converter cable connected to the serial or USB port

of the computer. CAN diagnostics re-quire a special CAN interface. Suit-able interfaces such as I+ME Actia’s XS series and Kvaser´s CAN adap-ters are available upon request.

The Silver Scan-Tool™ also sup-ports all SAE J2534 PassThru de-vices with a v0202 or v0404 driver and all devices using RP1210 API.

Once installed and registered, the Silver Scan-Tool™ is ready for use without any delay.

It runs on most MS Windows desktop and notebook computers if one of the supported diagnostics hardware interfaces is used. If the tool is to be used on tablet PCs or other special devices, please contact RA Consulting first.

The Silver Scan-Tool™ allows the processing of the J1699-3 OBDII Compliance Test Cases tool which is based on open-source software. This software serves as the basis for the logfile data formatter and the J1699 logfile viewer we have developed. The corresponding OBD II compliance test tool is a public available open-source software which is not part of the SST license. Its availability is subject to its open-source status and to any tech-nical and economical constraints pertaining to its integration. However, we will maintain and adapt this module as long as it is economically and techni-cally feasible. The Silver Scan Tool™ is a standard software and intellectual property of RA Consulting GmbH. The functionality of the SST standard soft-ware is not based on open-source software, allowing it to be used without the J1699-3 OBDII Compliance Test Cases tool.

RA Consulting has done an own implementation to execute the SAE J1939-84 OBD Communications Compliance Test Cases for heavy-duty components and vehicles. It is delivered with Silver Scan-Tool™. In diffe-rence to the official tool our implementation allows the execution of selected sections and single tests. It is not intended to run the complete test.
