The Sunshine Coast Arts Council, a non-profit volunteer-based organization supports the arts in our coast-wide community and operates the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt. The facility includes a community gallery and a performance space, and art and music studios.
Assistance is received from volunteers who contribute their time and energy, working on all our programs. We also benefit from the assistance of the British Columbia Arts Council, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Sunshine Coast Regional District, the District of Sechelt, and we acknowledge the financial assistance of the Government of British Columbia. We are also supported by the generosity of our members and donors, along with those who attend and support our fundraising events and our programs.

Hello Everyone –
How nice it is to set fingers to keyboard with good news. A couple of months ago the Board President began a conversation with the Mayor of Sechelt, Darren Inkster, to discuss whether additional funding might be found by the District of Sechelt for the Sunshine Coast Arts Council and the Art Centre.
Steve Wright, Board President, on behalf of the Sunshine Coast Arts Council, drafted a letter to the Mayor and Council. Many hours were put in honing the letter, listening to Budget discussions at the District of Sechelt Council meetings and talk-ing about what to say, who to talk to. On the evening of May 4 the Council agreed to provide $10,000 in additional funding in the upcoming budget year.
Thank you the Mayor and Councilors for their decision. We also want to thank everyone who provided support by way of conversations and suggestions, especially Anna Banana, Sheila Page, Katherine Johnston and each member of the Board of Directors, Steve Wright, Jenny Yeske, Linda Williams, Julie Astalnok and Silas White.
There are other thanks, too. The Sechelt Garden Club has been weeding and cleaning up the Arts Centre Garden. They’ve done a beautiful job.
All of these folks are volunteers, including the Gallery Attendants and many oth-ers who help keep the Centre open are. Thank you to you all!

musIC soCIety hosts homeComInG Weekend
Sunshine Coast Music Society is delighted to introduce an annual Homecoming Weekend to showcase young musicians returning from their off-coast studies on Friday, June 17 and Sunday, June 17 at Gibsons Heritage Playhouse.
7:30 pm Friday, June 17 soprano Elizabeth Currie Buono presents a solo vocal recital with piano collaborator Tom Kellough. As a student here on the Sunshine Coast, Beth completed her RCM Grade 9 piano, performed on violin with the Community Orchestra and Youth Orchestra, on trumpet with Elphinstone Secondary School Band and the Suncoast Concert Band, and sang with Choralations Youth Choir. This versatile young musician then completed her Bachelor of Music (Voice Major) at the University of British Columbia.
In recent years, Beth enjoyed the opportunity to sing with the UBC Opera Ensemble, including for their tour of China. As a member of Sarabande, the youth division of Vancouver Bach Choir, Beth toured the United Kingdom with Director Bruce Pullan in his final season. In September 2010 Beth joined selected members of Sarabande invited by Eric Whitaker to perform in the chorus of his commissioned Opera Paradise Lost at Carnegie Hall in New York.
At 2:00 pm Sunday afternoon June 19, Coast music lov-ers will have the opportunity to welcome back a series of
award-winning young performers from the Sunshine Coast Festival of the Performing Arts, community ensembles, school bands and choirs.
Tickets for Homecoming Weekend concerts are $15 adults/seniors and $10 students available at Hallmark Cards, Sunnycrest Mall Gibsons and Strait Music, Sechelt.

Our spring 2011 series concludes with a reading by Vancouver writer Lisa (Hobbs) Birnie on Saturday, May 7, at 8 pm. English-born Birnie is the author of nine books of non-fiction, of which her best known in Canada is The Death and Life of Sue Rodriguez (1994). Her I Saw Red China (1966) was a NY Times best seller. She is a recipient of a Professional Journalism Fellowship to Stanford University, a gold medal from the National Magazine Foundation (1992), and the Hubert Evans Award for B.C. non-fiction (1995). She was a writer-in-residence at Monash University, Melbourne (1998). Her latest book, In Mania’s Memory (August 2010; Red Leaf imprint of Simply Read Books) concerns the stories of two women, one a child in Auschwitz, the other a Nazi guard, whose lives are reconnected decades later. This reading is free, thanks to the generosity of the Canada Council for the Arts.

Now in its seventh year, the Pender Harbour Chamber Music Festival has established an enviable reputation for excellence. From Aug. 19 to 21, we again return to the beautiful water-front setting of the Pender Harbour School of Music where Alexander Tselyakov, Festival Artistic Director and pianist, will unveil a multi-layered program of exceptional beauty. It will be our great pleasure to welcome an outstanding group of guest musicians including the renowned violinist James Ehnes, BC’s dynamic Borealis String Quartet, emotive gui-tarist Daniel Bolshoy and talented young cellist Emmanuelle Beaulieu Bergeron.
As is now tradition, the festival begins on Friday afternoon with “Chamber Music Doesn’t Bite”—a perfect opportunity for those who are still a little cautious about chamber music to “test the waters” at no charge. That evening, the first tick-eted concert of the Festival will feature the haunting violin solo “Ballade” by Eugene Ysaye, Prokofiev’s vibrant D Major Sonata for violin and piano, Beethoven’s dramatic “Serioso” quartet and a lyrical quintet by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco.
On Saturday afternoon, the witty “Suite in the Old Style” by Alfred Schnittke and the beloved Sonata for violin and piano in C minor by Edvard Grieg are guaranteed to captivate
our audience. The final piece, Franz Schubert’s sublime String Quintet in C major, ends the afternoon on a blissful note.
At the evening concert, our audience will be caught up in the power of Mendelssohn’s String Quartet in F minor, the intensity of Franz Joseph Hayden’s Piano Trio in G Major and the floating quality of I sleep and my soul awakens by contemporary Canadian composer Clark Winslow Ross. The program ends with the moody brilliance of Dimitri Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor.
The Festival draws to a close on Sunday afternoon with a program that can only be described as a truly grand finale to the weekend. Moving from the flashing energy of Nicolo Paganini’s Centone di Sonate No 1 in A minor, to the introspec-tive Ashes by Canadian composer Kelly-Marie Murphy and to Franz Schubert’s stunning Arpeggione Sonata for guitar and cello, the program comes to a sweeping finish with Ernest Chausson’s rich and expressive Concerto for violin, string quar-tet and piano in D major.
