Newark CAMRA strives to increase consumer choice of real ale by objecting to pub closures and championing high standards of customer service in the areas public houses. We support our local breweries by promoting the diversity they bring to the bar.

Newark CAMRA also brings national issues such as tax and opening hours to local attention. Importantly, we are a social group of likeminded drinkers of all ages and walks of life. Anyone is welcome to attend our meetings, details of which can be found elsewhere in this issue.

Dear Festivalgoer

This is my first year as Chairman of the branch, and Id like to welcome you to the 17th Newark Beer Festival. Id like to take this opportunity to thank the last Chairman, Duncan Neil, who has left me with such a strong branch and supportive team.

I am pleased that the battle for real ale seems to have been won with almost 1000 breweries in the UK supplying a varied range of beers. However, the problems CAMRA has seen over the years regarding the closure of pubs is still apparent. If we do not support the pubs we will lose the war. So I encourage you to visit some of the very good outlets in Newark whilst you are in town or on any future visits. To give you some guidance, the members of the branch in conjunction with Capital Media have produced a local guide to all the pubs in the area; this is being launched at this festival. Please come along to the Real Ale Guide stand (next to the membership stand) to purchase your copy.

Finally, I would like to thank all the volunteers who are staffing the festival - this includes all the work done that you as customers do not see, for instance the committee that put in so much effort throughout the year to organise the event and those who, before and after the festival, set up and take everything down and put the equipment into storage ready for next years event.

I encourage you all to enjoy the beers, ciders and perries we have on offer, but please remember to drink responsibly and if you have enjoyed yourselves tell your friends as we will be back in 2013.

Brain teasing time again with resident brainiac Mark Taylor.

8-30pm - 10pm THE MACHINE SHED BAND

The Machine Shed Band are a Cambridge based Rock Blues Soul and Boogie band with many years experience playing pubs, clubs and festivals up and down the country. The four piece consists of Russ Squires - bass, Doug Martin -vocals, rhythm and slide guitar, Dave Keeling guitars, keyboards and Simon Martin drums. www.machineshedband.com

Singer/songwriter Guy Maile makes a welcome return to Newark and the Festival having appeared here way back in 2007 but has very much kept in touch with regular appearances at the Fox and Crown in Newark. With a mix of original songs and classic covers from the likes of Bob Dylan, The Police and Pink Floyd, Guys smoky vocals and beautiful acoustic guitar sound are well suited to any drinking establishment.

Time to shake up those brain cells once again with todays instalment

4pm - 5-15pm HOLD THE LINE

A classic rock covers band that originally started out as Natural Born Boogie and played the festival two years ago under that guise .Re-formed in July 2011, the band covers material from the 1960s

onwards and consist of Dave on guitar and vocals, Slick on lead guitar, Graham on drums and Annie on bass and b/vocals

6-15pm - 7-30pm PARKER

A four piece covers band from Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire, they have a very diverse set list, covering such artists as The Rolling Stones, The Clash, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Queens of the Stone Age and the Beatles. If you like your performances gritty, rockin and with attitude, dont miss these guys. Guitarist Dean is a regular face at the festival, last time performing with the band King-size Operator who completed a short tour in America, so there is plenty of quality and experience in this line-up.

8-30pm - 10pm THE ALMABOOBIESKindly sponsored by Travel Wright Limited

Beer festival virgins should take a few moments here to learn about Festival Etiquette. If you are standing with an empty glass, pick a brew at random, and then return to this page. Off you go. Now here are some tips to help enjoyyour session.

1. The breweries are listed in alphabetical order, followed by the brewerys location, the beer strength and then a short tasting note. Remember some of these brews are so new not even our cellarmen have tasted them, so please be tolerant if the descriptions arent 100% accurate.

2. We suggest you start at the lower end of the ABV (alcohol by volume) scale, say around 3.5%, and move steadily towards the heavier beers

at 6 or 7% and beyond. Remember, at this end of the scale you may lose your self-respect, use of your legs, or even your partner!

3. We cant guarantee that every beer will be available at every session. It is our policy not to serve beer that isnt ready, and some beers (marked as RES in the list) arent likely to be on first. If your choice isnt available, there may be several reasons: i) We were unable to get the advertised beer an alternative from that brewery will usually be on offer. ii) The beer is not yet ready to serve be patient, it may be available a little later. iii) Youre late and its already sold out!

4. Dont forget to eat! Visit our caterers occasionally to help soak up the beer. Or if you just want nibbles, we stock crisps, nuts and locally produced scratchings in the marquee.

BEAUMONDHOUSE

For the third consecutive year, Beaumond House Hospice is the nominated charity for our branch. The hospice cares for patients and their families within a 15 mile radius offering palliative and respite care.

In 2010 we raised 1013.32 and in 2011, 2085.38. These funds have been collected at our beer festivals and other fund raising events.

The hospice has an annual requirement of some 800,000, with only 25% of this amount coming from government funding, leaving a big gap, and our co operation is very much appreciated.

Following on from the success of last year, Rob and Sandra Neil of Maypole Brewery will be brewing a beer to coincide with our beer festival; sales of this beer will generate 50p per pint towards the hospice.

Last years brew, Heart of Gold, raised a total of 453 from festival sales and sales at Just Beer, The

Vine and The Prince Rupert.This years brew, Solar Storm, will also be sold

at these 3 outlets after its launch at the beer festival. Unlike Heart of Gold, Solar Storm is likely not to be a one off brew and could be continued.

Further branch fund raising will take place at the forthcoming 5k Sunflower Run on the 30th May. If anybody would like to join us, for a 10 entry fee, application forms are available at the Beaumond House reception.
