• The 49ers offense did not allow a sack tonight on 39 atts. by QB Nick Mullens, the second consecutive game the team did not allow a sack [0 sacks allowed on 22 atts. by Mullens vs. Oak. (11/1/18)]. This marks the first time since Weeks 3-4 of the 2000 season that the team did not allow a sack in consecutive weeks [34 atts. by QB Jeff Garcia at StL (9/17/00); 26 atts. by Garcia at Dal. (9/24/00)].

Movin’ The Sticks

• The 49ers offense converted 8 of 13 3rd down atts. (61.5 pct.), the highest 3rd down conversion rate by the team since 12/24/17 vs. Jax. [10 of 15 (66.7 pct.)].

• RB Matt Breida registered a career-high 17 carries for 101 yds. and 1 TD, marking his 2nd-career 100-yd. game [138 yds. vs. Det. (9/16/18)]. His 3-yd. TD run marked the 3rd of the season and 5th of his career.

• Breida also added 3 recepts. for 31 yds. and 1 TD through the air. He now has 2 TD recepts. on the season and 3 for his career.

• Breida became the first member of the 49ers to register at least 1 rushing TD and 1 rec. TD in the same game since WR Bruce Ellington on 12/20/14 vs. SD (1 rushing TD and 1 rec. TD).

Head Coach Kyle Shanahan Press Conference – November 12, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Opening Comments: “Alright, [CB] K’Waun [Williams] had a stinger there at the end. [DB] DJ Reed [Jr.] left with an ankle, went back in. [WR Marquise] Goodwin had his head examined and he went back in.” There were a lot of penalties on that last Giants sequence. The big one was the LB Malcolm Smith holding call. You seemed to have a pretty good angle on it, what did you see on that play? “He grabbed him. They called it.” Did that timeout defensively, it looked like your assistant coach was running up the sideline. Was this just something you needed to take there or would you prefer not to have to burn a time out there? “I would definitely prefer not to, but we saw a look that did not look good and we thought we had a chance still to hold them. So, that was a pivotal part of the game to try to stop them before they got there.” You’ve talked so much about finishing, finding finishers, etc., etc. Is this kind of the same type of game where you didn’t have that play to win it? “It was a number of plays. Extremely disappointed. I thought we put ourselves in a position that we should have won that game. Up 20-10 after the first drive in the third quarter. Gave up a big kick return right after that, I think, followed by two explosives. Got them right back in it, 20-17. I thought we had a chance to step on their throat there and we didn’t. We let them get back in it fast. Kept them around. Kept them around too long and then we didn’t make the plays at the end and we had every opportunity to and just as a team, players, coaching staff, we didn’t get it done.” How do you think QB Nick Mullens played generally and the second interception - did Goodwin stop and start a little bit on that route, did you notice? “I didn’t watch him, but the route is a stop and start route. So, I assume he did. It looked like the ball was a little bit behind him. I’d love Nick to throw a better ball and I expect Marquise to catch that regardless.” And how do you think Nick played overall in this game? “I think he did some good things and some things we need to improve on.” Goodwin went out and looked at his head. Came back in very quickly, then had the ball that was deflected and got hit in the head again. “Yeah.” How involved are you, I mean, some normal person would say he’s getting looked at twice in his head? He shouldn’t go back in. How involved are you in that decision, because he did play at the end? “Yeah, zero. They take him to a tent any time that happens. They phone from upstairs. They go to a tent. Even if he is feeling alright, they have to go anyway. So, they check it out and they tell me when they are good to go. So, I don’t know what goes on in the tent. I just know whether they say ‘you have him or you don’t.’”

Page 5: new york giants vs san francisco 49ersSan Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Monday, November 12, 2018 Can’t Touch This • The 49ers offense did not allow a sack tonight on 39

On the one touchdown to New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr., CB Ahkello Witherspoon was on coverage. He looked like he was upset afterwards, like he was supposed to get some help. “Yeah. I think he was expecting help over the top. He was surprised he didn’t get it.” Nick had a couple bumps that he didn’t have last week. Just how did he respond when he had a little adversity like a few interceptions? “He was the same. He had one early. Didn’t change. Didn’t get gun shy. Played his game. I don’t think the picks affected him. He played his game.” Are you okay with Witherspoon throwing his hands up in the air when he doesn’t get help? “No, I am not. No. Man up. Don’t put that on tape. We’ll deal with it when we come in.” RB Matt Breida came out for a little bit. Might have had a little tweak? “Yeah, he came out a little bit. Nothing though that I was told about, no injuries or anything. Just some wear and tear as the game went. So, tried to spell him here and there.” What happened on the first touchdown when it looked like Beckham found a spot in the zone between two guys? “I’m not exactly sure what happened, but that’s zone and you don’t get there quick enough, I’m not sure if it was three-man rush or not. I didn’t see it, but the zones broke down, it takes too long and found a hole there and [New York Giants QB] Eli [Manning] threw a good ball.” Will Nick be the starter after the bye? Nick Mullens? “I’m sure, but I haven’t thought about it yet.” Can you talk a little bit about LB Fred Warner and his play tonight? “From what I saw, I thought he played well. I won’t know for sure until I go study the tape, but when I was looking up I saw him make some plays. He’s done a helluva a job leading our defense all year as a rookie, just making the calls and being out there every single week too. We’ve been real happy with Fred this year. From what I saw, it looked like he did some good things in the game, but I won’t know for sure until I watch the tape.” On 3rd-n-7 in the red zone, just after the two-minute warning. It was a three-yard pass to WR Kendrick Bourne. What did you see on that play? “What?” It was a three-yard pass to WR Kendrick Bourne and was anyone open beyond the sticks? What did you see on that play? “Yeah, there’s five guys out on a route. There’s lots of stuff that goes on. We called H Arches, I don’t know if you know what that is, but someone fell under the arches, you have to go across the board to the shallow. He got hit by a plugger and we were a little bit late to it, because the guard, someone flashed across Nick’s face, so he couldn’t throw it on time. He threw it a little later and the defense recovered and stopped us short.” Obviously, the record isn’t what you want and obviously, you lost QB Jimmy Garoppolo and RB Jerick McKinnon. But overall, going into the bye week, what’s your assessment of the first portion of the season? “I mean, right now, I’m thinking all about this game. The assessment of the season so far is - I would be much happier with a better record. I know a lot of things have happened. I expected to win this game. We expected to win this game. Right now, I’m disappointed we didn’t and we’ll figure out how to get our

Page 6: new york giants vs san francisco 49ersSan Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Monday, November 12, 2018 Can’t Touch This • The 49ers offense did not allow a sack tonight on 39

guys better. Hopefully getting some rest will help the guys and we’ll have a good week of practice next week and come back and get ready for the second half of the season.” Coming back to that third-and-seven play, you said the throw was late, but was it the right read from Nick on that third-and-seven play? “Maybe. I’m not going to go through the entire playbook with you and you should wait until you see the play.” On Matt Breida, how helpful was he and how much was he battling that second half with the ankle? “I was never told that his ankle was hurt. I think he was alright.”

49ers QB Nick Mullens Press Conference – November 12, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants After the final play, you looked upset. Were you expecting a flag on the Giants? “I actually was. We didn’t get what I thought was going to be called, so people are probably wondering what I was talking about. But, I didn’t get what I thought was called. So, we lost the game.” What did you think it was? “I thought there was a personal foul, but there wasn’t.” Third-and-seven right after the two-minute warning, you threw a three-yard pass to WR Kendrick Bourne. Can you just take us through that play, what you saw? “That is a very frustrating play for me. But, it’s man coverage, had a good look. Everybody did their assignment for the most part, really except me. That’s kind of how I feel about it. But, it would’ve been nice to convert. We didn’t and those are the plays you have to make to finish the game.” Why was it frustrating? Do you feel you made the wrong read? “I don’t know. I just feel like I could’ve been better, put the ball where it should’ve been. I didn’t, or I was late to it, I guess you could say. But, yeah, it was just frustrating. In the NFL, Coach Shanahan always talks about the moments of truth. That is a moment of truth if you ever see one. I didn’t get the job done.” Obviously, every game isn’t going to be like your debut where pretty much everything went right. Generally, how do you think you did tonight in the second start? “It’s hard to evaluate the overall performance. There’s so many plays that are running through my head where it’s very frustrating. Everybody did a great job. I think, shoot, when you’re out on the field you really sense the brotherhood. Everybody battled their butts off. Everybody obviously gave it the best they could. But, effort doesn’t always win games. Execution does. So, that’s why I’m pretty frustrated with myself right now.” Head Coach Kyle Shanahan said he thought that you handled those moments of truth, the bumps in the road along the way pretty well. Is that something that comes natural to you? Do you have to, like you just said, put those things aside and not let it bother you as much? “I think the biggest thing in the course of the game I always try to myself is, ‘One play doesn’t affect the next. If you have a bad play, there’s no reason why you can’t have a good play the next play.’ So, that’s kind of what I keep telling myself through the game. Try to stay even-keeled, bring a positive energy to the field. Yeah, just talking about the moments of truth. I’ve got to perform better, and we’ve got to perform better and finish games when they’re there to finish.”

Page 7: new york giants vs san francisco 49ersSan Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Monday, November 12, 2018 Can’t Touch This • The 49ers offense did not allow a sack tonight on 39

What could you have done better on the first interception? You threw it in the left flat on the boundary. “Yeah, it wasn’t necessarily a terrible read. But, it was late and the corner made a good play on it. Yeah, that was about that. I definitely would have it back. Turnovers are obviously the story of the game in the NFL, as well. You give them a touchdown, we lose by what, four? So, you really realize that every single play in the game matters. It’s not okay when mistakes happen.” What happened on the second interception? “The tip ball? Just bad ball placement and bad luck. There’s no excuses for that.” Obviously, you were kind of the man of the hour after that Raiders game in your debut start. Tonight, after the first interception when you face some adversity, were you still feeling total support from your teammates? Did you still feel that? “Yeah, I thought everybody does a great job of that. We know that every game in the NFL is going to be close. Every game is going to be a dogfight and mistakes are going to happen. It’s tough. It’s never going to go perfect and you have to fight with your teammates, and that’s what I thought we did. We obviously didn’t finish, but we battled. We battled our butts off as hard as we could. I thought we did a great job, just everybody working together. The running backs, the O-Line, the receivers stepped up and made plays when they had to, even when it wasn’t the most accurate throw. So, that’s where it hurts so bad, man. I really had fun out there. Thought we really worked well together. We just didn’t score enough points.” Do you think you’ve played well enough over these two games to deserve to start against Tampa Bay after the bye? “I don’t know and I’m not worried about it. I’m really just frustrated that we lost.” On the spike play, are you looking at the clock on that play? Do you have an internal clock in your head? How’s the whole progression working? “That was as close as it can get. I knew I had to hurry up. Everybody did a great job of getting set and giving us a chance to at least have one shot at the end. So, that was a great job by everybody just getting down, getting set and getting a spike off.” Some guys talked about learning through adversity, and you learn how to win through adversity. Others have said it’s time to end that talk and just put up or shut up and win games. I know you’ve only started for two games. Where do you fall on that? “I don’t know. That’s a good question. You can talk about it all you want. I have to play better in those moments of truth. We all have to play better. It’s really just about how we come back, watch the tape, go to work and really feel how much this hurts. Don’t want to have this again, for sure.” Did anything feel different to you coming into this start having had actual practice? Did anything feel different? “You obviously had more time to prepare. So, that was cool. You get more reps, you feel more comfortable, feel confident. But, not really. You try to keep your mental approach consistent. That’s what I tried to do tonight. I thought our team did a pretty good job. Like I said, we just put in so much work. You put in so much work together. You have so much fun with your brothers out there. You come up short, it really sucks.”

49ers RB Matt Breida Postgame Quotes – November 12, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants It seemed like you got off to a really good start. Did you feel like since you got a little extra rest that you were healthier than you’ve been? “It definitely helped. It’s still not anywhere near where I want to be, but it definitely helped. Hopefully this bye week will get me back to where I was before.” What do you guys need to do on these late game drives to win these games? “We just have to finish on both sides of the ball. As an offense, I feel like we have to score and as a defense, I feel like we have to stop them. So, it’s no one person’s fault, it’s the whole teams. We just have to come back, grind and put everything together.” Did you get any extra motivation because New York Giants RB Saquon Barkley was your opponent today and just how much focus was on him and how well he’s been doing? “No, honestly I don’t pay attention to other players much. I just want to go out there and play football and win, at the end of the day. He’s a great player, but my goal wasn’t to go out there and play just because he was playing. I wanted to win.”

49ers DL DeForest Buckner Postgame Quotes – November 12, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants

Were you able to feel that you guys could put the kind of pressure on New York Giants QB Eli Manning that you planned coming in? “Their game plan was good. He was getting the ball out fast. They had a game plan to try not to get Eli hit. We tried to mix it up with some pressures.” How difficult was this loss considering the 49ers really seemed to control the game until the end? “That’s been the story of the season. We have to finish. I know we had some calls in the last drive against the defense, but we still need to find a way to make a play. Anybody. I personally need to make a play and try to get pressure on Eli. That’s everybody around on all levels. The DB’s, the linebackers, the defense. Everybody has to be held accountable. The defense could’ve won that game for us.” It seemed you faced a lot of double teams tonight. Was that the case? “Yeah. At the same time you still have to work. You have to find a way.” What’s the mood of this team? This is the fourth game you’ve lost by four or fewer points. “It’s tough, especially the real close ones. It’s really tough. Guys just have to stay close, and the guys are. They’re not blaming each other. Everybody has to take the blame. They’re putting the loss on themselves which they should. We just have to look at the film tomorrow, see what we messed up, get the ball rolling and try to get away a little bit during our bye week coming up.” Do you feel like you are close? “We definitely are. There are definitely a bunch of games where we just let the other team win. We gave it up. We couldn’t find a way to finish the game. We just have to come back tomorrow and his the ground rolling.”

49ers WR Marquise Goodwin Postgame Quotes – November 12, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants How do you feel after a very physical game? “That is every week. That is the name of the game.” The second time you went down, there were about four trainers out there, were they trying to block you or convince you that you didn’t need to go back in--? “I have no idea. They were saying the same thing that they would say when anybody is on the ground, which is to take your time getting up.” Can you talk about 49ers QB Nick Mullens’ performance tonight? The ball he threw to you appeared to be slightly behind you that led to the interception--? “We just have to do a better job at connecting. I definitely could have alleviated that by just putting the brakes on and catch the ball, body it up. We just have to focus on getting better going forward. Nick did exceptionally well. He had one turnover which was created with me. He did exactly what he was supposed to do. He did his job.”

49ers FB Kyle Juszczyk Postgame Quotes – November 12, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Were you curious to see how San Francisco 49ers QB Nick Mullens would respond to adversity? “We were all interested to see how he would respond against some adversity. I thought he did so. He had some nice third down conversions, he had some plays when he stepped into the throw when he was still getting hit. You respect that and you love to see that from your quarterback.” What was Nick’s reaction after that first interception? Did he express any frustration? “No, not really. He seemed to respond really well. He was very encouraging to everyone else. He told everybody we have to stick to it and take one play at a time. He was a great leader out there.” What does it tell you about San Francisco 49ers WR Marquise Goodwin’s toughness with him coming in and out of the game? “The guy is a warrior. We have seen him fight through injury before. It is unfortunate that he has to even experience that. We appreciate him putting his body out there and coming back and giving us a chance to win.”

49ers TE George Kittle Postgame Quotes – November 12, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Obviously, the record is not what you guys wanted. You lost your starting quarterback and starting running back at the beginning of the season. Can you give us an assessment of the season as a whole and how you guys have done going into this bye week? “We are 2-8. Obviously, we could be better. This loss stings. It is not fun losing at home on Monday Night and going into a bye. Adversity is what brings a team together. I know how cliché that sounds, but it is true. We are going to bounce back and ball out next game.”

Page 10: new york giants vs san francisco 49ersSan Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Monday, November 12, 2018 Can’t Touch This • The 49ers offense did not allow a sack tonight on 39

You mentioned adversity, tonight is the first time that 49ers QB Nick Mullens had some of that. How do you think he handled that? “Nick is a stud. He was great. He is a great voice. I love playing with him. I have nothing negative to say about Nick. He has done everything that we have asked of him and more. He is going to keep doing that and keep proving people wrong. He is going to keep slinging it.” With games that you could have won and didn’t, what is the level of frustration with this team? “Having a lead in the fourth quarter, we were up 20-10 in the second half, we had multiple opportunities to end it and we didn’t. That is something that we have to figure out. It has happened multiple times this season in big games. It we don’t figure it out, it is not going to be a fun season. I think we can figure it out. I love everyone in the locker room. We have a tight locker room. I love playing for coach Shanahan. We are going to fix this and we have the right guys to do it.”

49ers T Mike McGlinchey Postgame Quotes – November 12, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants

A lot of guys have talked about how adversity sort of teaches you how to win. At what point does that talking point become old and it becomes time to put up or shut up? “That’s all it comes down to is that we have to finish better. There’s nothing you can say other than that. It’s not about finding lessons in this. We know what happened tonight. We lost the game. There’s no other excuse you can make. We have to finish better. We had the game in our hands the whole second half, and we just couldn’t finish. There’s no excuse for that. It doesn’t matter what lessons are learned. A loss is a loss and we have to get better.” What happened with the false start in the fourth quarter with the lining up in the neutral zone? It looked like the ball was moved at the last second. “I just have to have a little bit better awareness than that. We were in a two-minute drill at the end of the game. The guys spotted the ball and I lined up on the ball. He then moved the ball. I didn’t look back inside because I have [New York Giants LB] Olivier Vernon on the other side and I had to block him. When the ball got moved I didn’t notice. It was a tough draw there.” What did you see out of San Francisco 49ers QB Nick Mullens in terms of his composure? “He was awesome all night. Nothing has changed about Nick Mullens. He’s as good as it gets in terms of a dude and in terms of a guy. He was composed the entire game. He’s a leader the entire game. He commanded our huddle awesome the entire night. We have to put him in a little bit better position to protect him a little bit better.” In terms of momentum, a couple of times in that game you moved the ball and just pushed it down the field. What does that mean for this team to be able to do consistently what you want to do? “We know what we’re capable of and what we’ve shown on tape all year. We’re an extremely physical front. The five of us I think have done an awesome job. We’re up at the top of the NFL in rushing, yards per carry and all those kind of stats. The bottom line is that we didn’t get it done when we needed to. We had an opportunity to score a touchdown instead of a field goal, and we didn’t move the chains. We put our defense back on the field when we shouldn’t have. The five of us will get better there, and the offense will get better there as well. I think we’ve been doing a great job up front all season. We just have to finish a little bit better.” Can you talk about San Francisco 49ers RB Matt Breida’s performance?

Page 11: new york giants vs san francisco 49ersSan Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Monday, November 12, 2018 Can’t Touch This • The 49ers offense did not allow a sack tonight on 39

“Matt’s just as hard-nosed and as tough of a competitor as you can get. He runs so hard. He makes it a lot of fun to block for him. He’s a great leader on this football team, and you don’t expect anything less than that from Matt Breida to give you everything he’s got. He’ll do that if he’s on one leg. He’s that kind of a guy. He’s been awesome all year.”

49ers CB Richard Sherman Postgame Quotes – November 12, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants What seemed to be the problem for this team? “I don’t know. We had them at third-and-15. We made some good plays. We stayed in position like we were supposed to be. It’s unfortunate with these series of events that went on at third-and-fifteen and then the next plays. You just try to do your job and hope that guys let them play and they didn’t let them play today.” You had a talk with 49ers CB Ahkello Witherspoon after the touchdown. What did you say to him? “Well, it was a coverage bust. He played it like he was supposed to play it. It was a good call, it should have been a good play and in two-man you have to play it like he played it. When you play two-man, you play two-man and he played two-man. It was unfortunate the way the call came in and we didn’t get the right guys on the field and it was just kind of a cluster.” We saw him throw his hands in the air--? “You shouldn’t ever do that. That is like a cardinal rule in football. He is frustrated because it is two-man and you are expecting guys to be where they are supposed to be and we didn’t get the personnel in that we needed to on the field.” Richard, you have been on teams that know how to do those little things that help you win. This team is trying to learn how to do those little things. How does that come about? “It just comes with practice. It comes with executing in practice situations. It is knowing that when you are tired, exhausted and practice is on the line, it’s the last period and being able to compete. We do a lot of competition periods in practice but it is early on. It is before guys legs get tired and guys get exhausted, so it is one of those things that just comes with time. It’s a young team with young guys. Today I think our guys fought as hard as they could and we just didn’t get the benefit of the whistle.”

49ers CB Ahkello Witherspoon Postgame Quotes – November 12, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants How do you assess this one? “Man, tough loss. We have to be better. We have to come back and get to work. It is definitely tough when you are competing against some of the best guys offensively and you come up short. You want to be better. We have to get back to the drawing board and improve.” You have lost a lot of these close games. Does it get to the point where it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy where you almost expect to lose? What is the mindset? “The mindset is to come into work every week. Whether you go 1-0 or 0-1 on the week, you still have another week to play the game. That is our approach and there are a lot of people that have that mental stability, that mental capability to do so. We just move on and keep working and get better.”

What role has San Francisco 49ers CB Richard Sherman had working with you? What did he say to you after that touchdown? “He just keeps me level, growing as a player and as a person. He is just pivotal in that progress.” What has the season been for you coming in and out of the lineup? The season has been a blessing. Every opportunity I have to play this game is an incredible opportunity for me. I am appreciative of every single second of it.” What can you learn by going up against the kind of receivers you went up against tonight? “That you can compete and play well against them. Every time you play well against guys like that, you gain more confidence. You just build on it. Next time you see them, you will be better. The next time you see another top guy, you will be better. Just keep improving.”

Giants Head Coach Pat Shurmur Postgame Quotes – November 12, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Opening comments: “The good news about that is that was a team victory. You saw contributions to the plus side in all three phases. You saw [New York Giants WR] Corey [Coleman] got some nice returns. He’s got a chance to take it the distance and we’re glad to get him going. We set ourselves back with penalties there, but we had positive contributions from all three phases, kicking game included. On defense, we got turnovers. For the most part, did a good job of keeping them out of the end zone. On offense, we found a way to finally score some points and I think that’s a contributing factor. We’ve seen it all along, I watched it when I wasn’t coaching here, [New York Giants QB] Eli [Manning] being able to engineer drives at the end of the game, that’s one of the things that he does extremely well. So, I was happy to see that he could engineer that touchdown drive to win the game. The takeaways, it’s a victory, it’s the first win in our little eight-game season here and we’ll put all of our energy into playing Tampa when we get back from the flight. We didn’t have any injuries to speak of, which is good. This is the first time I’ve ever really been around, we had all healthy scratches so we’re healthy as you can be. We had some new players in there contributing that will be good as we move forward. So, I’m happy for our guys. It’s always fun to win a game and like I told them, I said that the ones that you have to fight the hardest for are the ones that should feel the best. I know where we’re at, but this feels good to win a game and hopefully we can build on this getting ready for Tampa.” Are you satisfied with the offensive line’s performance? “I thought we did a good job. We had [New York Giants G] Jamon Brown in there and he did a good job. I think there was still some bad plays in there, but for the most part, I thought they did a good job protecting Eli. We had the one sack. We did some things to sort of protect him and I thought those guys battled. We found a way to make some yards running the ball as well. So, I think probably as a unit, that’s probably their best performance.” What did you think of Eli given that last drive? “As you walked in, I was saying that that’s what Eli is really good at, engineering those come from behind drives. I thought that was terrific. I thought he hung in there, made some really good throws and got us in the end zone. That’s the mark of a quarterback.”

Page 13: new york giants vs san francisco 49ersSan Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Monday, November 12, 2018 Can’t Touch This • The 49ers offense did not allow a sack tonight on 39

You have been looking for something positive for a while now. Can you say what that was like in the locker room? “I’ve said it all along as we’ve discussed it, but our guys do a really good job of keeping the noise out. We council them to do that and just keep playing and keep believing in one another and keep doing it for each other. That’s what we’re fighting for, the thrill of victory which they’re experiencing now in the locker room. I think as we go along here, we made progress tonight and as we go along, we’re going to have more victories. They’re going to always be hard fought, but this team fights hard and I’m glad that they’re able to experience victory.” How important do you think that was for Eli to be able to come out here and lead you down the field to the touchdown to end the game? “I don’t know. That’s a better question for Eli. I always think we’re going to go out there and beat the team that we’re going to play and I’m always expecting our players to play extremely well. I think he was a major contributor in our victory tonight so I’m happy for him.” What is it about him that makes him so good in those situations? Obviously, he’s done it for a long time in his career. “We’ve talked about it, even when I was learning the background of Eli from back when he was at Ole Miss. The guys that drafted him and brought him here said he was just so good at doing that and some quarterbacks have a knack for doing that phase of the game. I think he’s done it well and he displayed tonight that he can still do it.” Late in the game, New York Giants TE Evan Engram didn’t really have much going on early and then all of a sudden, that last drive, it seemed like he got it going. Why so little early and then so much later? “It’s a different style of game at the end. We’re throwing it almost every down so he was in there. Early in the game when we’re pounding it out and heavy play action, I had the other two guys in there. So, that’s mainly why.” It looked like you really tried to get New York Giants RB Saquon Barkley going there? “Yeah, tried to. I think we can do a better job. We’ll have to go back and look. I think there were some times there, and again it’s going to be a mixture of things, there’s going to be some times on some of those runs where there was a guy in a whole. There’s maybe some times where Saquon could have run it better. It’s always a mixed bag, but we’re going to give him his opportunity and his touches and he had one of the biggest plays in that last drive there with the little option drive we hit him with.” It’s been a while since you’ve had a win. Was that a sense of relief? “I don’t know. It’s always the thrill of victory. I believe in our guys. I know it’s going to, we’ve done a lot of reconstruction of the roster. There’s a lot of things that have changed running parallel. We don’t make excuses. Until tonight, we owned the 1-7 and now we own the 2-7. We’re going to just continue to build on it. We weren’t worried about smoke in the air. We weren’t worried about getting enough sleep to play. I’m fond of the [former NFL QB] Joe Namath quote, ‘How much sleep do you need for a three-hour game.’ We just really work on not making excuses for things and I think that’s part of what will drive us to get better.”

Page 14: new york giants vs san francisco 49ersSan Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Monday, November 12, 2018 Can’t Touch This • The 49ers offense did not allow a sack tonight on 39

Did anybody have problems with the air? “No, not at all. Coming out here, we knew that was the narrative. Some of you guys texted me if we would actually play the game. I had my fingers crossed we would. But, that was part of what I told the players last night. Don’t worry about it. If you get up at four o’clock in the morning, fight your way back to sleep and if you’re tired, so be it. Go play football. Same thing, don’t worry about the air. Something is going to kill you before that air. Don’t worry about it. It’s stuff you can’t control. They did a good job.” You’ve talked all along this season about how this team fights and fights. Does it become a resiliency when you win a game like this? The idea that you can fight all you want, but if you lose, all you do is fight? “It’s the thrill of competition. You fight and you fight and you do everything you can to win and at some point, you break over the top like we did tonight. The challenge now is to fly back home, get rested up and get ready for Tampa. So, that’s the world we live in. That’s why we have to keep the noise out. Because if we listen to all of the stuff that’s said, we’re going to be kookoo for cocoa puffs, know what I mean? You just can’t do it. I think our guys do a good job of not doing it.” Can you talk about New York Giants ILB B.J. Goodson real fast? “I thought he did a good job. He made a lot of plays. He had the one little stretch there where he got knocked out of the game and came back in. He’s tough. I’m really fond of him. He’s a tough guy and he’s a football player. There’s a place on our team for guys like that.” Did he have to show that to you? His playing time has been up and down. “Yeah, he was a guy that I didn’t know much about. But, along the way I’ve gained an appreciation for him as a player.”

New York Giants QB Eli Manning Press Conference – November 12, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants How big was that last drive? “That was big. That was big, and we’ve been good at the two-minute drive this year. Unfortunately, we’ve been kind of down two scores, or left too much time on sometimes and weren’t able to get some wins. But, when we needed touchdowns, we’ve been able to get them late in games. So, we felt confident about it and guys made some great plays, [New York Giants TE] Evan [Engram], [New York Giants RB] Saquon [Barkley], [New York Giants WR] Sterling [Shepard] at the end. It was big. We’ve got good players, we’ve got good receivers and they finally played a little man-to-man, and we were able to make some plays.” With everything that’s gone on for these weeks, just to be able to engineer that last drive and have some smiles in the room, what does that mean for you? “It means a lot, and that’s kind of what I told the guys this week. I said, ‘We’ve worked too hard not to be rewarded with wins.’ We’ve kind of stayed true to the course though, and each week prepare hard, practice well, play hard in games and we just weren’t able to get some of the outcomes or make some of the plays we needed to to win. And, today we were able to do that. We scored some touchdowns early instead of settling for field goals, a couple on third-and-long, which is tough. So, that was great. That was big, and kept the game close. Defense did a good job getting us some turnovers and then, did

Page 15: new york giants vs san francisco 49ersSan Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Monday, November 12, 2018 Can’t Touch This • The 49ers offense did not allow a sack tonight on 39

a great job making them settle for a field goal at the end, giving us enough time. A touchdown wins a football game, and we were able to come back and make the plays that we needed to to win.” Evan was not in as much, and he made a few plays down that last drive. What, particularly after the last game when you had that tough drop--? “Yeah, I think it was just a mindset of they’re a good defense, a good defensive line, and so just try to run the ball, really focus on getting Saquon a lot of touches. A lot of runs, thinking that would get us in some third and manageable situations, and third and fives and sixes, and we’d go to convert those and not have to take as much five and seven drops and get the ball out. I think it was good. We did a decent job on some third downs, converting and making some plays, and having some good drives, and ended up big plays to score enough points to win the game.” How about Evan specifically though, making a couple of those--? “Yeah, no Evan made some big plays on that final drive. Second play of the drive, get him down to the sidelines for about a 30-yard gain, which is huge right there. The thought right now, we’re second and 10. Then, later on when we’re at the 12-yard line, hit him on a little out, he got us to the two-yard line. So, that was a huge play right there, because from the 12 they can do a lot of things, and get you backed up and make it tough, but got the ball out quick and hit them, and then they finally put a little pressure in play to come out with some pressure, because we got guys that can beat man. And, hit Sterling on a little out route down there.” How big is this win given the fact that you guys still have a chance at a winning record by getting this win today? “Just for the moral of the team. We’ve been going through just some, a tough stretch and it wasn’t terrible football, it just wasn’t good enough. And, done some good things, just didn’t score enough points, didn’t do well enough in the red zone. Just enough bad plays that kept us from winning games. And, tonight the whole team was able to make enough good plays. The defense gets some stops, special teams getting a nice kick return. Just kind of doing the things right, not hurting ourselves and if we do that we’ve got a chance to win some football games.” How about just that feeling of just taking a team on the last drive to win the game, does that ever get old? “No, it doesn’t get old. That’s fun. It’s fun playing in those games and having a two-minute drive to win it. Those are the situations you want to be in if you want to have a chance. Obviously, you’d love to have a two score lead with a little time, and run it out or whatnot, but you prepare and practice for those two-minute drives to go win football games. To come through is exciting. The team needs that. The defense needs that to know that we can do that. Offense, we needed that for ourselves, saying, ‘Hey, we can win.’ If we get close in games, we can go win football games and we just had to do it.” Obviously you’ve been a lightning rod for much of the season here. How much satisfaction do you get out of this personally? I know you always talk about the team and just personally what does it mean to you to? “Wins are important. Wins mean a lot, especially after this season and what we’ve had to go through as a team, what I’ve had to go through, and just the questions and this and that. So, just to be able to have a two-minute drive to win a football game, hopefully we can just focus on some positive things for at least one more week.” When you got the ball there though, did you feel the pressure of more than just getting one win? “No, you just think about your preparation of what you’ve got to do. We’ve been in I don’t know how many two-minute drives at the end of games. We’ve been in a bunch and again, I kind of felt good about this team because we’ve been in some of those situations late in games when we’ve had to

Page 16: new york giants vs san francisco 49ersSan Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Monday, November 12, 2018 Can’t Touch This • The 49ers offense did not allow a sack tonight on 39

score and we’ve done it. So, I felt good that we had the skill set, we had the people who were prepared for that situation and just excited for that opportunity.” What’d you think of your line tonight? “I thought the offensive line played great. I thought they did a good job. I thought we had a good game plan and tried to just stick with the run. We’re good with it, we’re patient with it and it’s gotten us into some third and manageables, and not having to hold the ball long, and getting the ball out on time and doing a good job. Hit some play action, hit a few things down the field and they’ll get some good action and some good time.” You said everything you’ve had to go through. Does it wear on you, all the speculation about your future, and any changes, that type of thing? “It’s more just getting asked about it. Just trying to–it doesn’t bother me what people say, but just having to answer questions about it, I guess. You want to go out there and play football and that’s what I want to do. I want to be with my team and prepare and practice and go play football and obviously, get wins and feel good about what we’re doing.”

Giants RB Saquon Barkley Postgame Quotes – November 12, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants You came on strong with your long pass on that last drive that got you in the red zone. Your ability as a receiver certainly seems to have really come to fruition. “It was a great call by our coach and a great throw by [New York Giants QB] Eli [Manning]. I missed a ball earlier in that drive, lost in the air. I wanted to make up for it. Eli gave me a great ball. I was trying to make a play. I was trying to score there, but to be able to help set up a touchdown for [New York Giants WR Sterling] Shepard and to get the second win of the season felt really good.” This is the first time that you’ve been around for a game-winning drive with Eli. What is that like to have him get you down the field on one of those marches? “That’s funny that you said that, because after we went and scored, I came back to the sideline and said to him, ‘Man, you’ve been doing this since I was like 12!’ That’s Eli. When he’s in one of those moments, he’s a heck of a player. You know why when you’re around him. When you’re young and you’re watching him on the television, you’re like, ‘Oh wow!’ It’s his craft that he works on. He’s such a smart player and such a hard worker. When he’s in those positions, he just thrives.” This is your rookie season. Did you think it would be this hard, with only two wins this season? “Coming in, I’m just a very positive person. My mind says we’re here to win a game. It didn’t turn out that way. We’re not happy where we’re at right now, but you can’t complain about it. You’ve just got to continue getting better and finish the season strong. We’ve got to come into work every single day believing in each other and get better every single day, every single play, every single week. The rest will take care of itself.”

Postgame Quotes – November 12, 2018 San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants

Can you take us through that final drive? New York Giants QB Eli Manning has been known for those game-winning drives, especially early in his career. What was it like to get it done tonight?

Page 17: new york giants vs san francisco 49ersSan Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Monday, November 12, 2018 Can’t Touch This • The 49ers offense did not allow a sack tonight on 39

“It’s like I always tell Eli]. It’s the same thing I always tell him: ‘take me home ten’. He’s been there plenty of times. We put together a drive. Our offensive line did a great job all night. He had time to throw. I have to back to watch the film to see everything but I feel like we put a game together. It wasn’t my very best game but we got the win, and that all that matters.” It seems like the offense was a lot more balanced tonight. New York Giants RB Saquon Barkley was much better in the red zone and got touchdowns. Is this how you envisioned it all along? “Yes, but it’s not what happened during the season. This is where we are now. We have seven games left. All we can do is worry about the next one and that’s all.” You say you always do big things on your birthday. Do the two touchdowns count? “I’m not disappointed or upset but I feel like I could have done better. There were routes when I was trying to get out of my break because the defensive back was already breaking before I was. There are just some plays that I feel like I left out there, and it’s like I always tell you, I will never forget them.” Does this win give you a chance to salvage your season? “We are working on seven more games. We are working on Tampa. We’ll see what happens after that. I don’t know about salvaging. I wasn’t joking when I said we have to win eight games. That’s obviously the goal. I don’t come here to line up and lose. We come here to win these games.”

Giants S Landon Collins Postgame quotes – November 12, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Great win for you guys. You had a monster day. You had nine tackles. You were swarming all over the place. Overall, it was a brilliant day for you personally. “I’m just trying to do whatever I can do to help the team win. I didn’t know I had nine tackles, but I know I did make some plays that helped get the team in the best situation possible.” When it came down to that final drive was there ever any doubt in your mind that you would pull through? “There was no doubt in my mind. We knew we had to make them throw the ball and we were all over the field. We had all the confidence in the world.” Do you see yourself as a leader of this defense and of that secondary? “Yes sir, definitely. I look up to my guys and my guys look up to me. We are always on the same page. We have great communication.” The offense did their job tonight, didn’t they? “They did an awesome job. They kept us in the game. They moved the ball down the field. They put points on the board. All we had to do is keep them from scoring. That’s how we go that win.”

Giants TE Evan Engram Postgame Quotes – November 12, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants How did it feel on that last drive to get involved? “I mean, all night, honestly, I was just working and working and working. The perfect time came. It was just a great team effort tonight. That whole last drive, we had a couple of penalties that backed us up and put us out of field goal range and we still answered. We were down 10 points and we put two big

drives together to tie it up and keep ourselves in the game. Forget about getting involved at the end. It just felt good to be a part of a great team win tonight.” How was New York Giants QB Eli Manning on that last drive? That’s always been a strength of his. Just talk about his performance. “Eli has been doing this forever. He was on the same beat back there. Everybody else was anxious, ready, hopping around. It was a big drive. We have just been working and fighting all season. Tonight was a big night for him and a big night for our team. It was just great to be out there and be a part of that with him.” Did you have a sense of relief at all that you guys were able to finally get a win? “Trust me, it feels really good, but we’ve still got work to do. We still have goals for the season. It’s just great to get out of here tonight with a win and get back. We have short a week, but we should have a good week of work to keep this thing going.”

Giants LB B.J. Goodson

Postgame Quotes – November 12, 2018 San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants

Two big interceptions in this game. Can you take us through the first one? “Hustle and effort. I was flying around and getting to the ball.” It looked like the second one went off San Francisco 49ers WR Marquise Goodwin and you were in the right place at the right time. “That was another effort play, trusting the scheme and being in the right place at the right time. It definitely allowed me to be in position to make a play.” Starting in the preseason, you guys were preaching that you wanted to be a defense that took the ball away. Before this game, you hadn’t done it a lot this year. “It was cool. I got to see a lot of people who I knew from the West Coast. I’ve got some family here waiting for me.” This is your first official NFL game. What’s your takeaway in terms of the speed and making the jump from college to the pros? “It’s definitely faster. You’ve got to be patient with everything. You have to let it come. But we’re happy to get a win.” How did you manage the expectations – being drafted high as a first-round pick. How do you manage those expectations? “I don’t think about expectations at all. I just control what I can control and try to be the best football player I can be. I don’t listen to any of the other noise.” Can you talk about the fumble and how you responded in the last two minutes by getting that big first down? What did the coaches tell you after the fumble? “Just keep my head up. It happens, but it can’t happen. I try to cover it up but the guy made a good play. Coming back, you’ve got to respond.” You guys really responded with that last drive. How nice was it to keep you guys on the field and keep the defense off so you could put the game away? “It was good. They bailed us out a couple of times early in the game, so we owed it to them. When we can run out the clock like that and run the ball efficiently, I think we’re going to be a really good team.”

Page 19: new york giants vs san francisco 49ersSan Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Monday, November 12, 2018 Can’t Touch This • The 49ers offense did not allow a sack tonight on 39

How’s your rhythm building with Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton in the passing game? “It’s going well. We’re always learning. He’s a guy who’s always in his playbook and the film. Anytime he talks, I’m all ears.”

Giants WR Sterling Shepard Postgame Quotes – November 12, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants

What does it mean for you guys to break that five-game losing streak and come up with a win like this? “It means a lot to the team. We’re not a group of guys that’s going to quit. We want to show everybody what the first half of the season should’ve looked like. We’re going to try and accomplish that in the second half of the season. Like I said, guys aren’t going to quit and we’re going to finish this thing out.” Obviously, New York Giants QB Eli Manning has had a long career. What does it mean for him when you’re able to see him do what he does and engineer a comeback like this? “It frustrates me when people go at him. I see that from the media, but you wouldn’t want a better guy with the ball in his hands. You saw what he did on that last drive. When we need him, he’s going to come through for us.” When you get that ball, it’s not an easy catch. You have to rise up. “It was a rough day for me, so I was going to do whatever I had to do. I told everybody in the huddle before going out for that last drive that we have to do whatever we have to do to get the ball in the end zone. If I say that, I’m going to have to live by it.” You and New York Giants TE Evan Engram didn’t do too much before that last drive, but you both made big plays on that last drive. Is that what you thought this offense was going to be eight weeks ago? Having New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. carry it until then and have all of the different weapons step up in the end at different times? “If you want to put it that way, I guess you could say that. We have a lot of different weapons. Whenever guys are called upon, they’re going to make good plays.”
