Sample  Explanation:    

For  me,  my  mixed  culture  and  travels  have  greatly  influenced  my  perspective.  While  I  was  born  in  the  Philippines,  and  spent  most  of  my  life  between  California  and  New  Mexico,  my  heritage  is  greatly  Spanish  and  has  had  a  large  influence  on  my  traditions  and  way  of  thinking.    I  chose  to  include  a  photo  of  “Spanish  Tapas”  to  explain  the  idea  of  togetherness  through  eating  very  typical  of  the  Spanish  culture,  which  shows  my  rootedness  in  “traditional”  values.  The  image  of  people  lifting  up  a  house  –  typical  of  the  Filipino  concept  of  “Bayanihan”  also  shows  this.  I  also  chose  to  include  an  image  of  Gaudi’s  “La  Pedrera”  which  has  been  seen  by  many  as  an  artistic  symbol  of  expression  out  of  the  norm,  an  indication  of  how  tradition  and  liberalism  have  been  integrated  into  my  life  from  the  start.    I  included  the  “Hollywood”  sign  as  a  symbol  of  the  liberal  melting  pot  that  I  grew  up  in  that  allowed  me  to  see  beyond  family  ties  and  tradition  from  an  early  age.  The  images  of  Native  American  culture  integrate  my  broad  spectrum  of  cultural  experiences  that  led  me  to  become  highly  empathic  and  aware  of  how  others  may  see  the  world  around  us.  The  logo  of  “Santa  Fe  Prep”  serves  as  a  reminder  of  the  service-­‐oriented  non-­‐traditional  school  community  I  spent  many  years  in  that  taught  me  the  perspective  of  being  other-­‐centered.  The  words  around  the  images  symbolize  the  languages  I  speak  and/or  from  where  I  have  been  reminded  of  the  concepts  written  which  remain  with  me  on  a  daily  basis.  And  finally,  the  photos  of  Israel,  Portugal,  Germany,  and  China,  of  which  I  have  spent  a  decent  amount  of  time  in,  are  reminders  of  how  my  views,  knowledge,  and  opinions  are  always  broadened  by  the  travelling  I  do  and  the  people  I  meet.
