cEo Letter

Dear friends and colleagues:

Happy New Year! We hope that you and your family had a happy and safe holiday season.

as 2011 was drawing to a close, i found myself reflecting on the events of the past

year, and planning for the achievements and challenges of 2012. as always, i would

like to acknowledge the contributions of all our team members, without whom all

of this would not be possible.

The major achievements in 2011 include healthy sales growth (and excellent growth

in north america with 2 major projects won), the launch of our -86c freezers in

asia, development of pharmaceutical isolators, the move to our new manufacturing

facility (ETc), the establishment of platform roadmaps for many of our product lines,

and a re-designed organization structure aimed at taking Esco to the next level.

one of our team members came to me recently to ask my opinion on what were the most important things to Esco

employees. i told him that i believed that our employees valued chiefly the creation of a better future for oneself and

one’s family. He also told me that employees also valued a close team atmosphere across all levels of the organization.

We agreed. Let’s work together to make Esco a place where we can all realize our dreams.

This question triggered some further soul searching and made me reflect on the true purpose of business in today’s

world. at Esco, we believe that we exist to serve all stakeholders, including employees, customers, shareholders and

society at large. our chairman has frequently referred to the Esco family and encouraged the management team to run

this company with a heart. We also take pride in the fact that we are developing, manufacturing, selling and servicing

tools which help our customers make the world safer and healthier. in a small way, Esco contributes positively to society

by developing products, meeting customer needs, providing stable employment, doing business ethically and generating

profits which can be re-invested towards innovation and furthering the cause of the enterprise. We may not be a big

company by any measure, but we can still be a great small company.

2012 will be another year of change for Esco: new factory, new products, new international sales and service operations,

new systems and processes. our journey to become a more mature, organized and successful company. as Heraclitus

said, “only change is constant”. While nothing lasts forever, and “even beauty must die”, let us all take pride in our daily

efforts and strive to make a meaningful impact on the people around us every single day of our lives.

Sincerely,

XQ Lin

new Year, new achievements

Every year is an opportunity for us to do better than the last. Esco continually pursues developing new and better products and gaining more international certifications. In this year alone, Esco has released the Frontier™ Duo Generation 2, NordicSafe® Low Noise Class II MSC, and CelCulture® CO2 Incubator with Suppressed O2 as well as new certifications such as TIS for Isotherm® Forced Convection Laboratory Oven and the renewal of ISO 9001 and 14001 certificates for Esco Singapore and Bintan, Indonesia.

To add to this list are new products and more certifications achieved over a span of only 2 months. The Labculture® class ii Type B2 (LB2), for instance, is now available as a generation 2 product, with new and enhanced features as well as some of its proven original design and components. The LB2 g2, as we call it, features lower exhaust volume and pressure to save energy, lower noise for better operator working comfort, lower height to fit into labs with low ceilings, the new Sentinel™ gold controller, and many other great improvements.

One of the newest products of Esco is the Voyager® Software. Esco’s First Train the Trainer Program“Biosafety and Biosafety cabinet Training”

For years, Esco has conducted trainings which focused on sales and products and after-sales or technical service. Last 28 november 2011, Esco’s first Train the Trainer Program with the title “Biosafety and Biosafety cabinet Training” was held at its headquarters in Singapore. The speaker was a notable biosafety expert, Dr. Barbara Johnson, who is a registered biosafety professional.

Dr. Johnson is a past president of aBSa, past vice president of a-PBa, representative to iFBa and the co-Editor of the peer review journal applied Biosafety. Her company, Biosafety Biosecurity international is an approved Facility certifier by the Singapore Ministry of Health.

Participants in the training included Esco distributors from different countries as well as customers from different companies and institutes in Singapore. The training agenda covered topics such as Biosafety awareness and choosing

the Right BSc; Working Safely in a BSc; Personal Protective Equipment; introduction to Microbiology; Testing and Decontaminating BScs, just to name a few. The event was made more interesting with the live demonstration on the safe use of a BSc, wearing of PPE, and spill clean-up. The last portion of the training, which involved the active participation of attendees, was a demo on glove donning and doffing wherein everyone was asked to put on nitrile gloves and then rubbed them with a simulated germ gel. Participants then practiced taking off their gloves very carefully to avoid being “contaminated” by the gel.

it was definitely a very interesting and highly informative training for all who took part. With the success of this event, Esco plans to provide more trainings and seminars similar to this for distributors and end-users in order to help ensure that safety is always top priority.

other Esco Events

Two very successful end-user seminars were conducted in the cities of istanbul and ankara in Turkey last September 27 and 29, respectively. The topics discussed were about Biosafety cabinet & Laminar Flow cabinet Technology awareness and Safe Handling of cytotoxic Drugs, conducted by Mr. owais Yaqub, Esco MEna/Sa Sales & Technical Manager, and Mr. anwar ghani, Esco MEna /Sa regional trainer. These seminars were organized by our exclusive distributor SEM Endustri.

The total number of participants for both end-user seminars was more than 150, majority of which were from the government & private health sectors of Turkey. in both seminars, there was very good interaction between participants and the presenters with a lot of concepts and questions clarified by the end-users. Biohazard & cytotoxic sample handling techniques were discussed in detail as well as various local and international standards of biosafety and cytotoxic sample handling.

End-user Seminars in Turkey

TETca, or Taiwan’s Environmental Testing and certification association, held a workshop/seminar organized by academia Sinica last 25-26 october 2011 with the agenda “Biological Safety cabinets and chemical Fume Hood Testing Technology-cum-Workshop of international Standards.” TETca recognizes that there is a lack of active advocacy and training on the use of biological safety cabinets and fume hoods as well as safety awareness. The workshop was organized to address these weaknesses and the event received enthusiastic responses from those interested.

Esco’s cEo, XQ Lin, was invited as one of the speakers for the event. His talk consisted of Biological Safety cabinet classes and airflow Patterns and the comparison of nSF and En Biosafety cabinet Standards.

corporate Social Responsibility

corporate success and social welfare are interdependent. a business cannot accomplish one without affecting the other in one way or another. companies nowadays are becoming more responsible in applying business ethics and this is when corporate Social Responsibility (cSR) is integrated into the system.

Esco’s commitment to customers does not strictly apply to creating and producing the best quality or most innovative products but also ensuring that the company takes responsibility for its activities and provides satisfaction to all its stakeholders.

one of Esco’s cSR initiatives is sponsoring events or activities held by various organizations such as the Bio Safety Security Defence international congress & Exhibition 2011. Esco sponsored the said event held in July 2011, where Esco’s chairman and Founder, Mr. Lim Lay Yew, was invited to give a talk which directed towards the discussion of Biosafety cabinet classifications as well as a comparison between two international standards for biosafety cabinets: the american Standard, nSF 49, and the European Standard, En 12469.

another approach of Esco for cSR is to ‘go green”. Esco’s R&D evaluates components and designs in order to produce energy-efficient products without compromising quality. Manufacturing processes are also reviewed in order to come up with more efficient procedures and reduce wastage. Even simple activities like recycling and energy-conservation are implemented in the offices as part of this approach.

Trainings and Seminars are conducted for end-users or customers which cover useful topics to educate them on biological safety practices and proper use of laboratory equipment. The purpose of these trainings and seminars is for the laboratory workers to be made aware of possible hazards when working in the lab and to encourage them to apply safe practices and proper handling of equipment.

Looking forward to more cSR activities and with new plans already underway, Esco aims to establish and strengthen its corporate Social Responsibility as part of its commitment to serve its customers and the community, as well as to preserve the environment.

Esco’s Holiday Dinner Party

What better way to end a great year than with a great party! it was a unique and fun experience for the Esco family as its Singapore office spent their holiday party with a special dinner while enjoying the harbor cruise aboard the Dragon Ferry in Marina South Pier, Singapore.

Lots of prizes were in store for everyone as the hosts picked names throughout the evening, receiving vouchers and home appliances. Two were even lucky enough to win a flat-screen TV and an iPad. Some entertainment was provided as well by a number of staff with their dance numbers which everyone enjoyed.

another highlight was the gift exchange titled “Be My Secret Santa for christmas”. a few weeks before the party, everyone was asked to choose a cartoon character as their code name. Each person then picked from these code names a secret “baby” to give a present to. identities were revealed as each one was called that night to hand the present themselves to their “baby”.

after what seemed like endless chatting and picture-taking, everyone went home with huge smiles on their faces, carrying their prizes and filled tummies.

christmas and new Year on a global PerspectiveDecember has always been known as the christmas Season for

many while new Year’s Day gives everyone an exciting feeling of

having a fresh start no matter which part of the world they’re

in. although not all countries celebrate these holidays the same

way, it is interesting to know how different parts of the world

spend this time of the year in their own traditions.

in South africa, for example, christmas season falls during

summer, so instead of wearing winter coats and drinking hot

cocoa by the fire, people are drawn to the beach, rivers, or

camping areas. British christmas traditions were adapted by

South africans as well because of its history with the Uk, like

Boxing Day, the day after christmas, when boys go around

collecting money in clay boxes and break them once they are

filled. another is the hanging of stockings to be filled with

presents.

Bethlehem, the place which is believed to be where christmas

began, expects a huge crowd every year for christmas Eve

celebrations. Pilgrims from all over the world come to witness

annual processions passing through Manger Square, the

plaza outside the church or Basilica of the nativity. Different

processions are led by different christian denominations.

new Zealand is always the first country to celebrate new Year’s

Day because of its geographical location, with its city gisborne,

which is found 496km west of the international Date Line, as

the first major city in the world whose clock strikes 12mn.

one of the most popular new Year’s Eve countdowns is seen at

Times Square, new York city, where the annual new Year’s Eve

Ball Drop is held. The ball, signifying new Year’s Day, was first

dropped here in the year 1907 and has been done every year

since. about a million people come together every year in Times

Square just to watch this event.

How do you say “merry christmas” and “Happy New Year” in different languages? Here are a few ways:

no matter how you say it, or celebrate it, this time of the year is the most wonderful as we look back at the months that passed but

look forward to a new beginning filled with hope and great anticipation. Welcome to 2012!
