8 Are you better than Thebes that sat by the Nile, with water around her, her rampart a sea, and water her wall?

9 Cush was her strength; Egypt too, and that without limit; Put and the Libyans were her helpers.

10 Yet she became an exile; she went into captivity;

her infants were dashed in piecesat the head of every street;

for her honored men lots were cast, and all her great men were bound in chains.

A. Introduction

11 An oracle concerning Nineveh.

The book of the vision of Nahum of Elkosh.


2 The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD is avenging and wrathful; the LORD takes vengeance on his adversaries and keeps wrath for his enemies.

3 The LORD is slow to anger and great in power, and the LORD will by no means clear the guilty.

His way is in whirlwind and storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.

4 He rebukes the sea and makes it dry; he dries up all the rivers; Bashan and Carmel wither; the bloom of Lebanon withers.


5 The mountains quake before him; the hills melt; the earth heaves before him, the world and all who dwell in it.

6 Who can stand before his indignation? Who can endure the heat of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken into pieces by him.

7 The LORD is good,

a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him.

8 But with an overflowing flood he will make a complete end of the adversaries,and will pursue his enemies into darkness.

C. YHWH’s Declaration of Judgment

12 Thus says the LORD,

“Though they are at full strength and many, they will be cut down and pass away. Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no more.

13 And now I will break his yoke from off you and will burst your bonds apart.”

D. YHWH's Commandment

14 The LORD has given commandment about you:

“No more shall your name be perpetuated; from the house of your gods I will cut off the carved image and the metal image. I will make your grave, for you are vile.”

10 Desolate! Desolation and ruin! Hearts melt and knees tremble; anguish is in all loins; all faces grow pale!

11 Where is the lions’ den,

the feeding place of the young lions, where the lion and lioness went, where his cubs were, with none to disturb?

12 The lion tore enough for his cubs and strangled prey for his lionesses; he filled his caves with prey and his dens with torn flesh.

13 Behold, I am against you, declares the LORD of hosts,

and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

The Psalm of Habakkuk

2 O LORD, how long shall I cry for help, and you will not hear?

Or cry to you “Violence!” and you will not save?

3 Why do you make me see iniquity, and why do you idly look at wrong? Destruction and violence are before me; strife and contention arise.

4 So the law is paralyzed, and justice never goes forth.

For the wicked surround the righteous; so justice goes forth perverted.

5 “Look among the nations, and see; wonder and be astounded.

For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told.

6 For behold, I am raising up the Chaldeans,

that bitter and hasty nation, who march through the breadth of the earth, to seize dwellings not their own.

7 They are dreaded and fearsome; their justice and dignity go forth from themselves.

12 Are you not from everlasting, O LORD my God, my Holy One?

We shall not die. O LORD, you have ordained them as a judgment,

and you, O Rock, have established them for reproof. 13 You who are of purer eyes than to see evil

and cannot look at wrong, why do you idly look at traitors

and are silent when the wicked swallows up the man more righteous than he?

14 You make mankind like the fish of the sea, like crawling things that have no ruler.

15 He brings all of them up with a hook; he drags them out with his net; he gathers them in his dragnet;

so he rejoices and is glad. 16 Therefore he sacrifices to his net

and makes offerings to his dragnet; for by them he lives in luxury,

and his food is rich.17 Is he then to keep on emptying his net

and mercilessly killing nations forever?

21 I will take my stand at my watchpost and station myself on the tower, and look out to see what he will say to me, and what I will answer concerning my complaint.


2 And the LORD answered me:

“Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it.

3 For still the vision awaits its appointed time; it hastens to the end - it will not lie. If it seems slow, wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay.


5 Woes

6 Shall not all these take up their taunt against him, with scoffing and riddles for him, and say,

“Woe to him who heaps up what is not his own –

for how long? – and loads himself with pledges!”

7 Will not your debtors suddenly arise, and those awake who will make you tremble? Then you will be spoil for them.

8 Because you have plundered many nations, all the remnant of the peoples shall plunder you, for the blood of man and violence to the earth, to cities and all who dwell in them.


18 “What profit is an idol when its maker has shaped it, a metal image, a teacher of lies?

For its maker trusts in his own creation when he makes speechless idols!

19 Woe to him who says to a wooden thing, Awake; to a silent stone, Arise!

Can this teach? Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in it.

20 But the LORD is in his holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before him.”









2 O LORD, I have heard the

report of you, and your work, O LORD, do I

fear. In the midst of the years

revive it; in the midst of the years

make it known; in wrath remember mercy.








6 He stood and measured the

earth; he looked and shook the

nations; then the eternal

mountains were scattered; the everlasting hills sank

low. His were the everlasting

ways.








16 I hear, and my body trembles;

my lips quiver at the

sound; Yet I will quietly wait for the

day of trouble to come upon people who

invade us.







17 Though the fig tree should

not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail

and the fields yield no food,

the flock be cut off from the

fold and there be no herd in the

stalls,18 yet I will rejoice in the LORD;

I will take joy in the God of

my salvation.







19 GOD, the Lord, is my

strength; he makes my feet like the

deer’s; he makes me tread on my

high places.

Job

271 And Job again took up his discourse, and said:

2 "As God lives, who has taken away my right, and the Almighty, who has made my soul bitter,

3 as long as my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils,

4 my lips will not speak falsehood, and my tongue will not utter deceit.

5 Far be it from me to say that you are right; till I die I will not put away my integrity from me.

6 I hold fast my righteousness and will not let it go; my heart does not reproach me for any of my days.

381 Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said:

2 "Who is this that darkens counsel

by words without knowledge? 3 Dress for action like a man;

I will question you, and you make it known to me.

4 "Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?

Tell me, if you have understanding. 5 Who determined its measurements - surely you know!

Or who stretched the line upon it? 6 On what were its bases sunk,

or who laid its cornerstone, 7 when the morning stars sang together

and all the sons of God shouted for joy?


421 Then Job answered the LORD and said:

2 "I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.

3 'Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?'

Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.

4 'Hear, and I will speak; I will question you, and you make it known to me.'

5 I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you;

6 therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes."
